2023 Less Is More Important: An Attention Module Guided by Probability Density Function for Convolutional Neural Networks
abstract
Attention modules, which adaptively weight and refine features according to the importance of the input, have become a critical technique to boost the capability of convolutional neural networks. However, most existing attention modules are heuristic without a sound interpretation, and thus, require empirical engineering to design structure and operators within the modules. To handle the above issue, based on our 'less is more important' observation, we propose an Attention Module guided by Probability Density Function (PDF), dubbed PdfAM, which enjoys a rational motivation and requires few empirical structure designs. Concretely, we observe that pixels with less occurrence are prone to be textural details or foreground objects with much importance to aid vision tasks. Thus, with PDF values adopted as a smooth and anti-noise alternative to the pixel occurrence frequency, we design our PdfAM by first estimating the PDF based on some distribution assumption, and then predicting a 3D attention map via applying a negative correlation between the attention weights and the estimated PDF values. Furthermore, we develop learnable PDF-rescale parameters so as to adaptively transform the estimated PDF and predict a customized negative correlation. Experiments show that our PdfAM consistently boosts various networks under both high- and low-level vision tasks, and also performs favorably against other attention modules in terms of accuracy and convergence.

2022 Robust Invertible Image Steganography
abstract
Image steganography aims to hide secret images into a container image, where the secret is hidden from human vision and can be restored when necessary. Previous image steganography methods are limited in hiding capacity and robustness, commonly vulnerable to distortion on container images such as Gaussian noise, Poisson noise, and lossy compression. This paper presents a novelflow-basedframe-work for robust invertible image steganography, dubbed as RIIS. A conditional normalizing flow is introduced to model the distribution of the redundant high-frequency component with the condition of the container image. Moreover, a well-designed container enhancement module (CEM) also contributes to the robust reconstruction. To regulate the net-work parameters for different distortion levels, a distortion-guided modulation (DGM) is implemented over flow-based blocks to make it a one-size-fits-all model. In terms of both clean and distorted image steganography, extensive experi-ments reveal that the proposed RIIS efficiently improves the robustness while maintaining imperceptibility and capacity. As far as we know, we are the first to propose a learning-based scheme to enhance the robustness of image steganog-raphy in the literature. The guarantee of steganography ro-bustness significantly broadens the application of steganog-raphy in real-world applications.

2021 ISTA-NET++: Flexible Deep Unfolding Network for Compressive Sensing
abstract
While deep neural networks have achieved impressive success in image compressive sensing (CS), most of them lack flexibility when dealing with multi-ratio tasks and multi-scene images in practical applications. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel end-to-end flexible ISTA-unfolding deep network, dubbed ISTA-Net++, with superior performance and strong flexibility. Specifically, by developing a dynamic unfolding strategy, our model enjoys the adaptability of handling CS problems with different ratios, i.e., multi-ratio tasks, through a single model. A cross-block strategy is further utilized to reduce blocking artifacts and enhance the CS recovery quality. Furthermore, we adopt a balanced dataset for training, which brings more robustness when reconstructing images of multiple scenes. Extensive experiments on four datasets show that ISTA-Net++achieves state-of-the-art results in terms of both quantitative metrics and visual quality. Considering its flexibility, effectiveness and practicability, our model is expected to serve as a suitable baseline in future CS research. 2021 COAST: COntrollable Arbitrary-Sampling NeTwork for Compressive Sensing
abstract
Recent deep network-based compressive sensing (CS) methods have achieved great success. However, most of them regard different sampling matrices as different independent tasks and need to train a specific model for each target sampling matrix. Such practices give rise to inefficiency in computing and suffer from poor generalization ability. In this paper, we propose a novel COntrollable Arbitrary-Sampling neTwork, dubbed COAST, to solve CS problems of arbitrary-sampling matrices (including unseen sampling matrices) with one single model. Under the optimization-inspired deep unfolding framework, our COAST exhibits good interpretability. In COAST, a random projection augmentation (RPA) strategy is proposed to promote the training diversity in the sampling space to enable arbitrary sampling, and a controllable proximal mapping module (CPMM) and a plug-and-play deblocking (PnP-D) strategy are further developed to dynamically modulate the network features and effectively eliminate the blocking artifacts, respectively. Extensive experiments on widely used benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed COAST is not only able to handle arbitrary sampling matrices with one single model but also to achieve state-of-the-art performance with fast speed.
