| 2025 | The Scene Language: Representing Scenes with Programs, Words, and EmbeddingsabstractWe introduce the Scene Language, a visual scene representation that concisely and precisely describes the structure, semantics, and identity of visual scenes. It represents a scene with three key components: a ${\color{Orange}program}$ that specifies the hierarchical and relational structure of entities in the scene, ${\color{Blue}words}$ in natural language that summarize the semantic class of each entity, and ${\color{Purple}embeddings}$ that capture the visual identity of each entity. This representation can be inferred from pre-trained language models via a training-free inference technique, given text or image inputs. The resulting scene can be rendered into images using traditional, neural, or hybrid graphics renderers. Together, this forms an automated system for high-quality 3D and 4D scene generation. Compared with existing representations like scene graphs, our proposed Scene Language generates complex scenes with higher fidelity, while explicitly modeling the scene structures to enable precise control and editing. | 2024 | Learning the 3D Fauna of the WebabstractLearning 3D models of all animals in nature requires massively scaling up existing solutions. With this ultimate goal in mind, we develop 3D-Fauna, an approach that learns a pan-category deformable 3D animal model for more than 100 animal species jointly. One crucial bottle-neck of modeling animals is the limited availability of training data, which we overcome by learning our model from 2D Internet images. We show that prior approaches, which are category-specific, fail to generalize to rare species with limited training images. We address this challenge by introducing the Semantic Bank of Skinned Models (SBSM), which automatically discovers a small set of base animal shapes by combining geometric inductive priors with semantic knowledge implicitly captured by an off-the-shelf self-supervised feature extractor. To train such a model, we also contribute a new large-scale dataset of diverse animal species. At inference time, given a single image of any quadruped animal, our model reconstructs an articulated 3D mesh in a feed-forward manner in seconds. | 2024 | ZeroNVS: Zero-Shot 360-Degree View Synthesis from a Single ImageabstractWe introduce a 3D-aware diffusion model, ZeroNVS, for single-image novel view synthesis for in-the-wild scenes. While existing methods are designed for single objects with masked backgrounds, we propose new techniques to address challenges introduced by in-the-wild multi-object scenes with complex backgrounds. Specifically, we train a generative prior on a mixture of data sources that capture object-centric, indoor, and outdoor scenes. To address issues from data mixture such as depth-scale ambiguity, we propose a novel camera conditioning parameterization and normalization scheme. Further, we observe that Score Distillation Sampling (SDS) tends to truncate the distribution of complex backgrounds during distillation of 360-degree scenes, and propose “SDS anchoring” to improve the diversity of synthesized novel views. Our model sets a new state-of-the-art result in LPIPS on the DTU dataset in the zero-shot setting, even outperforming methods specifically trained on DTU. We further adapt the challenging Mip-NeRF 360 dataset as a new benchmark for single-image novel view synthesis, and demonstrate strong performance in this setting. | 2023 | RICO: Regularizing the Unobservable for Indoor Compositional ReconstructionabstractRecently, neural implicit surfaces have become popular for multi-view reconstruction. To facilitate practical applications like scene editing and manipulation, some works extend the framework with semantic masks input for the object-compositional reconstruction rather than the holistic perspective. Though achieving plausible disentanglement, the performance drops significantly when processing the indoor scenes where objects are usually partially observed. We propose RICO to address this by regularizing the unobservable regions for indoor compositional reconstruction. Our key idea is to first regularize the smoothness of the occluded background, which then in turn guides the foreground object reconstruction in unobservable regions based on the object-background relationship. Particularly, we regularize the geometry smoothness of occluded background patches. With the improved background surface, the signed distance function and the reversedly rendered depth of objects can be optimized to bound them within the background range. Extensive experiments show our method outperforms other methods on synthetic and real-world indoor scenes and prove the effectiveness of proposed regularizations. | 2023 | Learning A Room with the Occ-SDF Hybrid: Signed Distance Function Mingled with Occupancy Aids Scene RepresentationabstractImplicit neural rendering, using signed distance function (SDF) representation with geometric priors like depth or surface normal, has made impressive strides in the surface reconstruction of large-scale scenes. However, applying this method to reconstruct a room-level scene from images may miss structures in low-intensity areas and/or small, thin objects. We have conducted experiments on three datasets to identify limitations of the original color rendering loss and priors-embedded SDF scene representation. Our findings show that the color rendering loss creates an optimization bias against low-intensity areas, resulting in gradient vanishing and leaving these areas unoptimized. To address this issue, we propose a feature-based color rendering loss that utilizes non-zero feature values to bring back optimization signals. Additionally, the SDF representation can be influenced by objects along a ray path, disrupting the monotonic change of SDF values when a single object is present. Accordingly, we explore using the occupancy representation, which encodes each point separately and is unaffected by objects along a querying ray. Our experimental results demonstrate that the joint forces of the feature-based rendering loss and Occ-SDF hybrid representation scheme can provide high-quality reconstruction results, especially in challenging room-level scenarios. | 2023 | Failure-aware Policy Learning for Self-assessable Robotics TasksabstractSelf-assessment rules play an essential role in safe and effective real-world robotic applications, which verify the feasibility of the selected action before actual execution. But how to utilize the self-assessment results to re-choose actions remains a challenge. Previous methods eliminate the selected action evaluated as failed by the self-assessment rules, and re-choose one with the next-highest affordance (i.e. process-of-elimination strategy [1]), which ignores the dependency between the self-assessment results and the remaining untried actions. However, this dependency is important since the previous failures might help trim the remaining over-estimated actions. In this paper, we set to investigate this dependency by learning a failure-aware policy. We propose two architectures for the failure-aware policy by representing the self-assessment results of previous failures as the variable state, and leveraging recurrent neural networks to implicitly memorize the previous failures. Experiments conducted on three tasks demonstrate that our method can achieve better performances with higher task success rates by less trials. Moreover, when the actions are correlated, learning a failure-aware policy can achieve better performance than the process-of-elimination strategy. | 2023 | A Joint Modeling of Vision-Language-Action for Target-oriented Grasping in ClutterabstractWe focus on the task of language-conditioned grasping in clutter, in which a robot is supposed to grasp the target object based on a language instruction. Previous works separately conduct visual grounding to localize the target object, and generate a grasp for that object. However, these works require object labels or visual attributes for grounding, which calls for handcrafted rules in planner and restricts the range of language instructions. In this paper, we propose to jointly model vision, language and action with object-centric representation. Our method is applicable under more flexible language instructions, and not limited by visual grounding error. Besides, by utilizing the powerful priors from the pre-trained multi-modal model and grasp model, sample efficiency is effectively improved and the sim2real problem is relived without additional data for transfer. A series of experiments carried out in simulation and real world indicate that our method can achieve better task success rate by less times of motion under more flexible language instructions. Moreover, our method is capable of generalizing better to scenarios with unseen objects and language instructions. | 2023 | CenterLPS: Segment Instances by Centers for LiDAR Panoptic SegmentationabstractThis paper focuses on LiDAR Panoptic Segmentation (LPS), which has attracted more attention recently due to its broad application prospect for autonomous driving and robotics. The mainstream LPS approaches either adopt a top-down strategy relying on 3D object detectors to discover instances or utilize time-consuming heuristic clustering algorithms to group instances in a bottom-up manner. Inspired by the center representation and kernel-based segmentation, we propose a new detection-free and clustering-free framework called CenterLPS, with the center-based instance encoding and decoding paradigm. Specifically, we propose a sparse center proposal network to generate the sparse 3D instance centers, as well as center feature embedding, which can well encode characteristics of instances. Then a center-aware transformer is applied to collect the context between different center feature embedding and around centers. Moreover, we generate the kernel weights based on the enhanced center feature embedding and initialize dynamic convolutions to decode the final instance masks. Finally, a mask fusion module is devised to unify the semantic and instance predictions and improve the panoptic quality. Extensive experiments on SemanticKITTI and nuScenes demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed center-based framework CenterLPS. | 2022 | Learning Part Segmentation through Unsupervised Domain Adaptation from Synthetic VehiclesabstractPart segmentations provide a rich and detailed part-level description of objects. However, their annotation requires an enormous amount of work, which makes it difficult to apply standard deep learning methods. In this paper, we propose the idea of learning part segmentation through unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) from synthetic data. We first introduce UDA-Part, a comprehensive part segmentation dataset for vehicles that can serve as an adequate benchmark for UDA11https://qliu24.github.io/udapart/. In UDA-Part, we label parts on 3D CAD models which enables us to generate a large set of annotated synthetic images. We also annotate parts on a number of real images to provide a real test set. Secondly, to advance the adaptation of part models trained from the synthetic data to the real images, we introduce a new UDA algorithm that leverages the object's spatial structure to guide the adaptation process. Our experimental results on two real test datasets confirm the superiority of our approach over existing works, and demonstrate the promise of learning part segmentation for general objects from synthetic data. We believe our dataset provides a rich testbed to study UDA for part segmentation and will help to significantly push forward research in this area. | 2021 | Searching Parameterized AP Loss for Object DetectionabstractLoss functions play an important role in training deep-network-based object detectors. The most widely used evaluation metric for object detection is Average Precision (AP), which captures the performance of localization and classification sub-tasks simultaneously. However, due to the non-differentiable nature of the AP metric, traditional object detectors adopt separate differentiable losses for the two sub-tasks. Such a mis-alignment issue may well lead to performance degradation. To address this, existing works seek to design surrogate losses for the AP metric manually, which requires expertise and may still be sub-optimal. In this paper, we propose Parameterized AP Loss, where parameterized functions are introduced to substitute the non-differentiable components in the AP calculation. Different AP approximations are thus represented by a family of parameterized functions in a unified formula. Automatic parameter search algorithm is then employed to search for the optimal parameters. Extensive experiments on the COCO benchmark with three different object detectors (i.e., RetinaNet, Faster R-CNN, and Deformable DETR) demonstrate that the proposed Parameterized AP Loss consistently outperforms existing handcrafted losses.
