2025 IterComp: Iterative Composition-Aware Feedback Learning from Model Gallery for Text-to-Image Generation
abstract
Advanced diffusion models like Stable Diffusion 3, Omost, and FLUX have made notable strides in compositional text-to-image generation. However, these methods typically exhibit distinct strengths for compositional generation, with some excelling in handling attribute binding and others in spatial relationships. This disparity highlights the need for an approach that can leverage the complementary strengths of various models to comprehensively improve the composition capability. To this end, we introduce IterComp, a novel framework that aggregates composition-aware model preferences from multiple models and employs an iterative feedback learning approach to enhance compositional generation. Specifically, we curate a gallery of six powerful open-source diffusion models and evaluate their three key compositional metrics: attribute binding, spatial relationships, and non-spatial relationships. Based on these metrics, we develop a composition-aware model preference dataset comprising numerous image-rank pairs to train composition-aware reward models. Then, we propose an iterative feedback learning method to enhance compositionality in a closed-loop manner, enabling the progressive self-refinement of both the base diffusion model and reward models over multiple iterations. Detailed theoretical proof demonstrates the effectiveness of this method. Extensive experiments demonstrate our significant superiority over previous methods, particularly in multi-category object composition and complex semantic alignment. IterComp opens new research avenues in reward feedback learning for diffusion models and compositional generation. Code: https://github.com/YangLing0818/IterComp

2024 Privileged Prior Information Distillation for Image Matting
abstract
Performance of trimap-free image matting methods is limited when trying to decouple the deterministic and undetermined regions, especially in the scenes where foregrounds are semantically ambiguous, chromaless, or high transmittance. In this paper, we propose a novel framework named Privileged Prior Information Distillation for Image Matting (PPID-IM) that can effectively transfer privileged prior environment-aware information to improve the performance of trimap-free students in solving hard foregrounds. The prior information of trimap regulates only the teacher model during the training stage, while not being fed into the student network during actual inference. To achieve effective privileged cross-modality (i.e. trimap and RGB) information distillation, we introduce a Cross-Level Semantic Distillation (CLSD) module that reinforces the students with more knowledgeable semantic representations and environment-aware information. We also propose an Attention-Guided Local Distillation module that efficiently transfers privileged local attributes from the trimap-based teacher to trimap-free students for the guidance of local-region optimization. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our PPID on image matting. The code will be released soon.

2024 RealCompo: Balancing Realism and Compositionality Improves Text-to-Image Diffusion Models
abstract
Diffusion models have achieved remarkable advancements in text-to-image generation. However, existing models still have many difficulties when faced with multiple-object compositional generation. In this paper, we propose ***RealCompo***, a new *training-free* and *transferred-friendly* text-to-image generation framework, which aims to leverage the respective advantages of text-to-image models and spatial-aware image diffusion models (e.g., layout, keypoints and segmentation maps) to enhance both realism and compositionality of the generated images. An intuitive and novel *balancer* is proposed to dynamically balance the strengths of the two models in denoising process, allowing plug-and-play use of any model without extra training. Extensive experiments show that our RealCompo consistently outperforms state-of-the-art text-to-image models and spatial-aware image diffusion models in multiple-object compositional generation while keeping satisfactory realism and compositionality of the generated images. Notably, our RealCompo can be seamlessly extended with a wide range of spatial-aware image diffusion models and stylized diffusion models. 2024 SDNet: An Extremely Efficient Portrait Matting Model via Self-Distillation
abstract
Most existing portrait matting models either require expensive auxiliary information or try to decompose the task into sub-tasks that are usually resource-hungry. These challenges limit its application on low-power computing devices. In addition, mobile networks tend to be less powerful than those cumbersome ones in feature representation mining. In this paper, we propose an extremely efficient portrait matting model via self-distillation (SDNet), that aims to provide a solution to performing accurate and effective portrait matting with limited computing resources. Our SD-Net contains only 2M parameters, 2.2% of parameters of MGM, and 1.5% of that of Matteformer. We introduce the training pipeline of self-distillation that can improve our lightweight baseline model without any parameter addition, network modification, or over-parameterized teacher models which need well-pretraining. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our self-distillation method and the lightweight SDNet network. Our SDNet outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA) lightweight approaches on both synthetic and real-world images.

2023 Ultra Real-Time Portrait Matting via Parallel Semantic Guidance
abstract
Most existing portrait matting models either require expensive auxiliary information or try to decompose the task into sub-tasks that are usually resource-hungry. These challenges limit its application on low-power computing devices. In this paper, we propose an ultra-light-weighted portrait matting network via parallel semantic guidance (PSGNet) for real-time portrait matting without any auxiliary inputs. PSGNet leverages parallel multi-level semantic information to efficiently guide the feature representations to replace traditional sequential semantic hints from objective decomposition. We also introduce an efficient fusion module to effectively combine parallel branches of PSGNet to minimize the representation redundancy. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our PSGNet can achieve remarkable performance on both synthetic and real-world images. Our PSGNet is capable to process at 100fps thanks to its ultra-small number of parameters, which makes it deployable on low-power computing devices without compromising on the performance of real-time portrait matting.

2022 Situational Perception Guided Image Matting
abstract
Most automatic matting methods try to separate the salient foreground from the background. However, the insufficient quantity and subjective bias of the current existing matting datasets make it difficult to fully explore the semantic association between object-to-object and object-to-environment in a given image. In this paper, we propose a Situational Perception Guided Image Matting (SPG-IM) method that mitigates subjective bias of matting annotations and captures sufficient situational perception information for better global saliency distilled from the visual-to-textual task. SPG-IM can better associate inter-objects and object-to-environment saliency, and compensate the subjective nature of image matting and its expensive annotation. We also introduce a textual Semantic Transformation (TST) module that can effectively transform and integrate the semantic feature stream to guide the visual representations. In addition, an Adaptive Focal Transformation (AFT) Refinement Network is proposed to adaptively switch multi-scale receptive fields and focal points to enhance both global and local details. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of situational perception guidance from the visual-to-textual tasks on image matting, and our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. We also analyze the significance of different components in our model.

2022 MC-GCN: A Multi-Scale Contrastive Graph Convolutional Network for Unconstrained Face Recognition With Image Sets
abstract
In this paper, a Multi-scale Contrastive Graph Convolutional Network (MC-GCN) method is proposed for unconstrained face recognition with image sets, which takes a set of media (orderless images and videos) as a face subject instead of single media (an image or video). Due to factors such as illumination, posture, media source, etc., there are huge intra-set variances in a face set, and the importance of different face prototypes varies considerably. How to model the attention mechanism according to the relationship between prototypes or images in a set is the main content of this paper. In this work, we formulate a framework based on graph convolutional network (GCN), which considers face prototypes as nodes to build relations. Specifically, we first present a multi-scale graph module to learn the relationship between prototypes at multiple scales. Moreover, a Contrastive Graph Convolutional (CGC) block is introduced to build attention control model, which focuses on those frames with similar prototypes (contrastive information) between pair of sets instead of simply evaluating the frame quality. The experiments on IJB-A, YouTube Face, and an animal face dataset clearly demonstrate that our proposed MC-GCN outperforms the state-of-the-art methods significantly.

2022 Prior-Induced Information Alignment for Image Matting
abstract
Image matting is an ill-posed problem that aims to estimate the opacity of foreground pixels in an image. However, most existing deep learning-based methods still suffer from the coarse-grained details. In general, these algorithms are incapable of felicitously distinguishing the degree of exploration between deterministic domains (e.g.certain FG and BG pixels) and undetermined domains (e.g.uncertain in-between pixels), or inevitably lose information in the continuous sampling process, leading to a sub-optimal result. In this paper, we propose a novel network named Prior-Induced Information Alignment Matting Network (PIIAMatting), which can efficiently model the distinction of pixel-wise response maps and the correlation of layer-wise feature maps. It mainly consists of a Dynamic Gaussian Modulation mechanism (DGM) and an Information Alignment strategy (IA). Specifically, the DGM can dynamically acquire a pixel-wise domain response map learned from the prior distribution. The response map can present the relationship between the opacity variation and the convergence process during training. On the other hand, the IA comprises an Information Match Module (IMM) and an Information Aggregation Module (IAM), jointly scheduled to match and aggregate the adjacent layer-wise features adaptively. Besides, we also develop a Multi-Scale Refinement (MSR) module to integrate multi-scale receptive field information at the refinement stage to recover the fluctuating appearance details. Extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate that the proposed PIIAMatting performs favourably against state-of-the-art image matting methods on theAlphamatting.com, Composition-1 K and Distinctions-646 dataset.

2021 Tripartite Information Mining and Integration for Image Matting
abstract
With the development of deep convolutional neural networks, image matting has ushered in a new phase. Regarding the nature of image matting, most researches have focused on solutions for transition regions. However, we argue that many existing approaches are excessively focused on transition-dominant local fields and ignored the inherent coordination between global information and transition optimisation. In this paper, we propose the Tripartite Information Mining and Integration Network (TIMI-Net) to harmonize the coordination between global and local attributes formally. Specifically, we resort to a novel 3-branch encoder to accomplish comprehensive mining of the input information, which can supplement the neglected coordination between global and local fields. In order to achieve effective and complete interaction between such multi-branches information, we develop the Tripartite Information Integration (T I2) Module to transform and integrate the interconnections between the different branches. In addition, we built a large-scale human matting dataset (Human-2K) to advance human image matting, which consists of 2100 high-precision human images (2000 images for training and 100 images for test). Finally, we con-duct extensive experiments to prove the performance of our proposed TIMI-Net, which demonstrates that our method performs favourably against the SOTA approaches on the alphamatting.com (Rank First), Composition-1K (MSE- 0.006, Grad-11.5), Distinctions-646 and our Human-2K. Also, we have developed an online evaluation website to perform natural image matting.
