2024 Imbalance-Robust Multi-Label Self-Adjusting kNN
abstract
In the task of multi-label classification in data streams, instances arriving in real-time need to be associated with multiple labels simultaneously. Various methods based on the k Nearest Neighbors algorithm have been proposed to address this task. However, these methods face limitations when dealing with imbalanced data streams, a problem that has received limited attention in existing works. To approach this gap, this article introduces the Imbalance-Robust Multi-Label Self-Adjusting kNN (IRMLSAkNN), designed to tackle multi-label imbalanced data streams. IRMLSAkNN’s strength relies on maintaining relevant instances with imbalance labels by using a discarding mechanism that considers the imbalance ratio per label. On the other hand, it evaluates subwindows with an imbalance-aware measure to discard older instances that are lacking performance. We conducted statistical experiments on 32 benchmark data streams, evaluating IRMLSAkNN against eight multi-label classification algorithms using common accuracy-aware and imbalance-aware measures. The obtained results demonstrate that IRMLSAkNN consistently outperforms these algorithms in terms of predictive capacity and time cost across various levels of imbalance.

2021 Pirá: A Bilingual Portuguese-English Dataset for Question-Answering about the Ocean
abstract
Current research in natural language processing is highly dependent on carefully produced corpora. Most existing resources focus on English; some resources focus on languages such as Chinese and French; few resources deal with more than one language. This paper presents the Pirá dataset, a large set of questions and answers about the ocean and the Brazilian coast both in Portuguese and English. Pirá is, to the best of our knowledge, the first QA dataset with supporting texts in Portuguese, and, perhaps more importantly, the first bilingual QA dataset that includes this language. The Pirá dataset consists of 2261 properly curated question/answer (QA) sets in both languages. The QA sets were manually created based on two corpora: abstracts related to the Brazilian coast and excerpts of United Nation reports about the ocean. The QA sets were validated in a peer-review process with the dataset contributors. We discuss some of the advantages as well as limitations of Pirá, as this new resource can support a set of tasks in NLP such as question-answering, information retrieval, and machine translation.

2021 Efficient algorithms for Risk-Sensitive Markov Decision Processes with limited budget
abstract
We tackle the problem of finding optimal policies for Markov Decision Processes, that minimize the probability of the cumulative cost exceeding a given budget. Such task falls under the umbrella of Risk-Sensitive Markov Decision Processes, which optimize a non-additive, non-linear function of cumulative cost that incorporates the user's attitude towards risk. Current algorithms for solving that task, for any budget equal or smaller than an user-defined budget, scale poorly when the support of the cost function is large, since they operate in an augmented state space which enumerates all possible remaining budgets. To circumvent this issue, we develop (i) an improved version of the Topological Value Iteration with Dynamic Programming algorithm (tvi-dp), and (ii) the first symbolic dynamic programming algorithm for this class of problems, called rs-spudd, that exploits conditional independence in the transition function in the augmented state space. The proposed algorithms improve efficiency by pruning irrelevant states and terminating early, without sacrificing optimality. Empirical results show that rs-spudd is able to solve problems up to 103 times larger than tvi-dp.
