| 2023 | Cardinality optimization in constraint-based modelling: application to human metabolismabstractMOTIVATION: Several applications in constraint-based modelling can be mathematically formulated as cardinality optimization problems involving the minimization or maximization of the number of nonzeros in a vector. These problems include testing for stoichiometric consistency, testing for flux consistency, testing for thermodynamic flux consistency, computing sparse solutions to flux balance analysis problems and computing the minimum number of constraints to relax to render an infeasible flux balance analysis problem feasible. Such cardinality optimization problems are computationally complex, with no known polynomial time algorithms capable of returning an exact and globally optimal solution. RESULTS: By approximating the zero-norm with nonconvex continuous functions, we reformulate a set of cardinality optimization problems in constraint-based modelling into a difference of convex functions. We implemented and numerically tested novel algorithms that approximately solve the reformulated problems using a sequence of convex programs. We applied these algorithms to various biochemical networks and demonstrate that our algorithms match or outperform existing related approaches. In particular, we illustrate the efficiency and practical utility of our algorithms for cardinality optimization problems that arise when extracting a model ready for thermodynamic flux balance analysis given a human metabolic reconstruction. | 2022 | Stochastic DCA with Variance Reduction and Applications in Machine LearningabstractWe design stochastic Difference-of-Convex-functions Algorithms (DCA) for solving a class of structured Difference-of-Convex-functions (DC) problems. As the standard DCA requires the full information of (sub)gradients which could be expensive in large-scale settings, stochastic approaches rely upon stochastic information instead. However, stochastic estimations generate additional variance terms making stochastic algorithms unstable. Therefore, we integrate some novel variance reduction techniques including SVRG and SAGA into our design. The almost sure convergence to critical points of the proposed algorithms is established and the algorithms' complexities are analyzed. To study the efficiency of our algorithms, we apply them to three important problems in machine learning: nonnegative principal component analysis, group variable selection in multiclass logistic regression, and sparse linear regression. Numerical experiments have shown the merits of our proposed algorithms in comparison with other state-of-the-art stochastic methods for solving nonconvex large-sum problems. | 2018 | Accelerated Difference of Convex functions Algorithm and its Application to Sparse Binary Logistic RegressionabstractIn this work, we present a variant of DCA (Difference of Convex function Algorithm) with the aim to improve its convergence speed. The proposed algorithm, named Accelerated DCA (ADCA), consists in incorporating the Nesterov's acceleration technique into DCA. We first investigate ADCA for solving the standard DC program and rigorously study its convergence properties and the convergence rate. Secondly, we develop ADCA for a special case of the standard DC program whose the objective function is the sum of a differentiable with L-Lipschitz gradient function (possibly nonconvex) and a nonsmooth DC function. We exploit the special structure of the problem to propose an efficient DC decomposition for which the corresponding ADCA scheme is inexpensive. As an application, we consider the sparse binary logistic regression problem. Numerical experiments on several benchmark datasets illustrate the efficiency of our algorithm and its superiority over well-known methods. Phan Duy Nhat, Le Hoai Minh, Le Thi Hoai An |

| 2017 | Stochastic DCA for the Large-sum of Non-convex Functions Problem and its Application to Group Variable Selection in ClassificationabstractIn this paper, we present a stochastic version of DCA (Difference of Convex functions Algorithm) to solve a class of optimization problems whose objective function is a large sum of non-convex functions and a regularization term. We consider the $\ell_{2,0}$ regularization to deal with the group variables selection. By exploiting the special structure of the problem, we propose an efficient DC decomposition for which the corresponding stochastic DCA scheme is very inexpensive: it only requires the projection of points onto balls that is explicitly computed. As an application, we applied our algorithm for the group variables selection in multiclass logistic regression. Numerical experiments on several benchmark datasets and synthetic datasets illustrate the efficiency of our algorithm and its superiority over well-known methods, with respect to classification accuracy, sparsity of solution as well as running time. | 2013 | Block Clustering Based on Difference of Convex Functions (DC) Programming and DC AlgorithmsabstractWe investigate difference of convex functions (DC) programming and the DC algorithm (DCA) to solve the block clustering problem in the continuous framework, which traditionally requires solving a hard combinatorial optimization problem. DC reformulation techniques and exact penalty in DC programming are developed to build an appropriate equivalent DC program of the block clustering problem. They lead to an elegant and explicit DCA scheme for the resulting DC program. Computational experiments show the robustness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm and its superiority over standard algorithms such as two-mode K-means, two-mode fuzzy clustering, and block classification EM. | 2009 | Solving the Perceptron Problem by deterministic optimization approach based on DC programming and DCAabstractThe perceptron problem (PP) appeared for the first time in the learning machines and is very useful for zero-knowledge identification schemes in cryptology. The problem is NP-complete and no deterministic algorithm is known to date. In this paper we develop a deterministic method based on DC (Difference of Convex functions) programming and DCA (DC optimization Algorithms), an innovative approach in nonconvex programming framework. We first formulate the PP as a concave minimization programming problem. Then, we show how to apply DC programming and DCA for the resulting problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is promising: its is very fast and can efficiently solve the Perceptron Problem with large sizes.
