| 2026 | AirForce: Personal Fabrication of Large-Scale, Load-Bearing Animatronics Structures from a Single TubeabstractWe present a fabrication system called AirForce that allows users to create large-scale, load-bearing animated structures from a single inflatable tube. AirForce builds on the personal fabrication of animated truss structures, based on which it replaces not only the static elements with tube, but also introduces tube-based actuators that integrate with that same tube. This ‘single-tube’ design affords efficient single-person assembly, excellent power-to-weight ratio, easy transport and setup, and 100% material reuse. We show three variants of actuators: buckling actuators for pushing, muscle actuators for pulling, and telescoping actuators for large forces. Our blender plugin enables users to place actuators in structures and export instructions for efficient fabrication. We demonstrate a 6DOF motion platform that lifts humans and an 8m high animatronic T-rex that animates with 3DOF, enabled by custom hardware components. In our technical evaluation, the three actuators delivered 480N, 1420N, and 2330N peak forces, respectively. | 2025 | Mallet-Based Assembly: Enabling Load-Bearing Laser-Cut ModelsabstractLaser cutting has a long tradition of building load-bearing 3D objects based on box joints and T-joints, as these joints are naturally robust against compression and shearing. Achieving robustness against tension, however, is challenging. One presumed solution is to make all joints extremely tight, to the point where they can only be assembled using a mallet. However, our survey found that making joints tight can cause models to break during assembly. In this paper, we identify the 10 underlying issues and present techniques for overcoming them: by extending parts with what we call scaffolding or by adjusting the models’ assembly order, so as to bypass states that are subject to these issues. Based on our user study and analysis of laser-cut models, scaffolding speeds up assembly for an average of 14% of the assembly operations per model, which in turn gives an average of 1.3x speed-up per model, and 70% of the models would benefit from the adjusted assembly order, that in the absence of such, would require higher assembly effort. | 2023 | TurnAhead: Designing 3-DoF Rotational Haptic Cues to Improve First-person Viewing (FPV) ExperiencesabstractFirst-Person View (FPV) drone is a recently developed category of drones designed for precision flying and for capturing exhilarating experiences that could not be captured before, such as navigating through tight indoor spaces and flying extremely close to subjects of interest. FPV viewing experiences, while exhilarating, typically have frequent rotations that can lead to visually induced discomfort. We present TurnAhead, which uses 3-DoF rotational haptic cues that correspond to camera rotations to improve the comfort, immersion, and enjoyment of FPV experiences. It uses headset-mounted air jets to provide ungrounded rotational forces and is the first device to support rotation around all 3 axes: yaw, pitch, and roll. We conducted a series of perception and formative studies to explore the design space of timing and intensity of haptic cues, followed by user experience evaluation, for a combined total of 44 participants (n=12, 8, 6, 18). Results showed that TurnAhead significantly improved overall comfort, immersion, and enjoyment, and was preferred by 89% of participants. | 2022 | Flaticulation: Laser Cutting Joints with Articulated AnglesabstractWe present Flaticulation, a method to laser cut joints that clutch two cut-in-place flat boards at designated articulated angles. We discover special T-patterns added on the shared edge of two pieces allowing them to be clutched at a bending angle. We analyze the structure and propose a parametric model regarding the T-pattern under laser cutting to predict the joint articulated angle. We validate our proposed model by measuring real prototypes and conducting stress-strain analysis to understand their structural strength. Finally, we provide a user interface for our example applications, including fast assembling unfolded 3D polygonal models and adding detent mechanisms for functional objects such as a mouse and reconfigurable objects such as a headphone.
