| 2025 | InfiniteYou: Flexible Photo Recrafting While Preserving Your IdentityabstractAchieving flexible and high-fidelity identity-preserved image generation remains formidable, particularly with advanced Diffusion Transformers (DiTs) like FLUX. We introduce InfiniteYou (InfU), one of the earliest robust frameworks leveraging DiTs for this task. InfU addresses significant issues of existing methods, such as insufficient identity similarity, poor text-image alignment, and low generation quality and aesthetics. Central to InfU is InfuseNet, a component that injects identity features into the DiT base model via residual connections, enhancing identity similarity while maintaining generation capabilities. A multi-stage training strategy, including pretraining and supervised fine-tuning (SFT) with synthetic single-person-multiple-sample (SPMS) data, further improves text-image alignment, ameliorates image quality, and alleviates face copy-pasting. Extensive experiments demonstrate that InfU achieves state-of-the-art performance, surpassing existing baselines. In addition, the plug-and-play design of InfU ensures compatibility with various existing methods, offering a valuable contribution to the broader community. Yumin Jia, Zichuan Liu, Hao Kang |

| 2025 | Humanizing the Machine: Proxy Attacks to Mislead LLM DetectorsabstractThe advent of large language models (LLMs) has revolutionized the field of text generation, producing outputs that closely mimic human-like writing. Although academic and industrial institutions have developed detectors to prevent the malicious usage of LLM-generated texts, other research has doubt about the robustness of these systems. To stress test these detectors, we introduce a humanized proxy-attack (HUMPA) strategy that effortlessly compromises LLMs, causing them to produce outputs that align with human-written text and mislead detection systems. Our method attacks the source model by leveraging a reinforcement learning (RL) fine-tuned humanized small language model (SLM) in the decoding phase. Through an in-depth analysis, we demonstrate that our attack strategy is capable of generating responses that are indistinguishable to detectors, preventing them from differentiating between machine-generated and human-written text. We conduct systematic evaluations on extensive datasets using proxy-attacked open-source models, including Llama2-13B, Llama3-70B, and Mixtral-8x7B in both white- and black-box settings. Our findings show that the proxy-attack strategy effectively deceives the leading detectors, resulting in an average AUROC drop of 70.4% across multiple datasets, with a maximum drop of 95.0% on a single dataset. Furthermore, in cross-discipline scenarios, our strategy also bypasses these detectors, leading to a significant relative decrease of up to 90.9%, while in cross-language scenario, the drop reaches 91.3%. Despite our proxy-attack strategy successfully bypassing the detectors with such significant relative drops, we find that the generation quality of the attacked models remains preserved, even within a modest utility budget, when compared to the text produced by the original, unattacked source model. | 2025 | MIXRTs: Toward Interpretable Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning via Mixing Recurrent Soft Decision TreesabstractWhile achieving tremendous success in various fields, existing multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) with a black-box neural network makes decisions in an opaque manner that hinders humans from understanding the learned knowledge and how input observations influence decisions. In contrast, existing interpretable approaches usually suffer from weak expressivity and low performance. To bridge this gap, we propose MIXing Recurrent soft decision Trees (MIXRTs), a novel interpretable architecture that can represent explicit decision processes via the root-to-leaf path and reflect each agent's contribution to the team. Specifically, we construct a novel soft decision tree using a recurrent structure and demonstrate which features influence the decision-making process. Then, based on the value decomposition framework, we linearly assign credit to each agent by explicitly mixing individual action values to estimate the joint action value using only local observations, providing new insights into interpreting the cooperation mechanism. Theoretical analysis confirms that MIXRTs guarantee additivity and monotonicity in the factorization of joint action values. Evaluations on complex tasks like Spread and StarCraft II demonstrate that MIXRTs compete with existing methods while providing clear explanations, paving the way for interpretable and high-performing MARL systems. | 2024 | Higher Replay Ratio Empowers Sample-Efficient Multi-Agent Reinforcement LearningabstractOne of the notorious issues for Reinforcement Learning (RL) is poor sample efficiency. Compared to single agent RL, the sample efficiency for Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) is more challenging because of its inherent partial observability, non-stationary training, and enormous strategy space. Although much effort has been devoted to developing new methods and enhancing sample efficiency, we look at the widely used episodic training mechanism. In each training step, tens of frames are collected, but only one gradient step is made. We argue that this episodic training could be a source of poor sample efficiency. To better exploit the data already collected, we propose to increase the frequency of the gradient updates per environment interaction (a.k.a. Replay Ratio or Update-To-Data ratio). To show its generality, we evaluate 3 MARL methods on 6 SMAC tasks. The empirical results validate that a higher replay ratio significantly improves the sample efficiency for MARL algorithms. The codes to reimplement the results presented in this paper are open-sourced at https://github.com/egg-west/rr_for_MARL. | 2024 | RCAgent: Cloud Root Cause Analysis by Autonomous Agents with Tool-Augmented Large Language ModelsabstractLarge language model (LLM) applications in cloud root cause analysis (RCA) have been actively explored recently. However, current methods are still reliant on manual workflow settings and do not unleash LLMs' decision-making and environment interaction capabilities. We present RCAgent, a tool-augmented LLM autonomous agent framework for practical and privacy-aware industrial RCA usage. Running on an internally deployed model rather than GPT families, RCAgent is capable of free-form data collection and comprehensive analysis with tools. Our framework combines a variety of enhancements, including a unique Self-Consistency for action trajectories, and a suite of methods for context management, stabilization, and importing domain knowledge. Our experiments show RCAgent's evident and consistent superiority over ReAct across all aspects of RCA--predicting root causes, solutions, evidence, and responsibilities--and tasks covered or uncovered by current rules, as validated by both automated metrics and human evaluations. Furthermore, RCAgent has already been integrated into the diagnosis and issue discovery workflow of the Real-time Compute Platform for Apache Flink of Alibaba Cloud. | 2024 | Explaining Time Series via Contrastive and Locally Sparse PerturbationsabstractExplaining multivariate time series is a compound challenge, as it requires identifying important locations in the time series and matching complex temporal patterns.
Although previous saliency-based methods addressed the challenges,
their perturbation may not alleviate the distribution shift issue, which is inevitable especially in heterogeneous samples.
We present ContraLSP, a locally sparse model that introduces counterfactual samples to build uninformative perturbations but keeps distribution using contrastive learning.
Furthermore, we incorporate sample-specific sparse gates to generate more binary-skewed and smooth masks, which easily integrate temporal trends and select the salient features parsimoniously.
Empirical studies on both synthetic and real-world datasets show that ContraLSP outperforms state-of-the-art models, demonstrating a substantial improvement in explanation quality for time series data.

| 2024 | I-Matting: Improved Trimap-Free Image MattingabstractImage matting has become an essential functionality of image capturing and editing tools. While trimap and scribble-based techniques have shown notable success in these applications, generating high-quality alpha mattes without trimap inputs remains challenging. Existing trimap-free methods divide the task into coarse semantic mask prediction and detailed matte prediction, and an optimization is formulated by balancing these two tasks. However, emphasizing the optimization of the coarse mask leads to inaccurate matte, and emphasizing the optimization of the detailed matte leads to degraded semantic integrity or background artifacts. In this paper, we propose an improved trimap-free training strategy (I-Matting) that effectively ensures semantic integrity, removes background artifacts, and improves local details. First, we introduce two discriminators to distinguish the matting outputs versus the ground truths, which boosts the semantic without hurting the matte prediction. Second, a novel patch-rank module is proposed to improve the matting accuracy by leveraging high-resolution inputs, without hurting the semantic integrity. Meanwhile, the accuracy gain produced by I-Matting is not at the expense of any additional cost in the inference. Extensive experiments show that our method significantly outperforms existing approaches. Zichuan Liu, Mingyuan Wu, Lantao Yu, Klara Nahrstedt |

| 2024 | TimeX++: Learning Time-Series Explanations with Information BottleneckabstractExplaining deep learning models operating on time series data is crucial in various applications of interest which require interpretable and transparent insights from time series signals. In this work, we investigate this problem from an information theoretic perspective and show that most existing measures of explainability may suffer from trivial solutions and distributional shift issues. To address these issues, we introduce a simple yet practical objective function for time series explainable learning. The design of the objective function builds upon the principle of information bottleneck (IB), and modifies the IB objective function to avoid trivial solutions and distributional shift issues. We further present TimeX++, a novel explanation framework that leverages a parametric network to produce explanation-embedded instances that are both in-distributed and label-preserving. We evaluate TimeX++ on both synthetic and real-world datasets comparing its performance against leading baselines, and validate its practical efficacy through case studies in a real-world environmental application. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations show that TimeX++ outperforms baselines across all datasets, demonstrating a substantial improvement in explanation quality for time series data. | 2024 | Position: Rethinking Post-Hoc Search-Based Neural Approaches for Solving Large-Scale Traveling Salesman ProblemsabstractRecent advancements in solving large-scale traveling salesman problems (TSP) utilize the heatmap-guided Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS) paradigm, where machine learning (ML) models generate heatmaps, indicating the probability distribution of each edge being part of the optimal solution, to guide MCTS in solution finding. However, our theoretical and experimental analysis raises doubts about the effectiveness of ML-based heatmap generation. In support of this, we demonstrate that a simple baseline method can outperform complex ML approaches in heatmap generation. Furthermore, we question the practical value of the heatmap-guided MCTS paradigm. To substantiate this, our findings show its inferiority to the LKH-3 heuristic despite the paradigm’s reliance on problem-specific, hand-crafted strategies. For the future, we suggest research directions focused on developing more theoretically sound heatmap generation methods and exploring autonomous, generalizable ML approaches for combinatorial problems. | 2024 | Protecting Your LLMs with Information BottleneckabstractThe advent of large language models (LLMs) has revolutionized the field of natural language processing, yet they might be attacked to produce harmful content.
Despite efforts to ethically align LLMs, these are often fragile and can be circumvented by jailbreaking attacks through optimized or manual adversarial prompts.
To address this, we introduce the Information Bottleneck Protector (IBProtector), a defense mechanism grounded in the information bottleneck principle, and we modify the objective to avoid trivial solutions.
The IBProtector selectively compresses and perturbs prompts, facilitated by a lightweight and trainable extractor, preserving only essential information for the target LLMs to respond with the expected answer.
Moreover, we further consider a situation where the gradient is not visible to be compatible with any LLM.
Our empirical evaluations show that IBProtector outperforms current defense methods in mitigating jailbreak attempts, without overly affecting response quality or inference speed.
Its effectiveness and adaptability across various attack methods and target LLMs underscore the potential of IBProtector as a novel, transferable defense that bolsters the security of LLMs without requiring modifications to the underlying models. | 2023 | Depth and Video Segmentation Based Visual Attention for Embodied Question AnsweringabstractEmbodied Question Answering (EQA) is a newly defined research area where an agent is required to answer the user's questions by exploring the real-world environment. It has attracted increasing research interests due to its broad applications in personal assistants and in-home robots. Most of the existing methods perform poorly in terms of answering and navigation accuracy due to the absence of fine-level semantic information, stability to the ambiguity, and 3D spatial information of the virtual environment. To tackle these problems, we propose a depth and segmentation based visual attention mechanism for Embodied Question Answering. First, we extract local semantic features by introducing a novel high-speed video segmentation framework. Then guided by the extracted semantic features, a depth and segmentation based visual attention mechanism is proposed for the Visual Question Answering (VQA) sub-task. Further, a feature fusion strategy is designed to guide the navigator's training process without much additional computational cost. The ablation experiments show that our method effectively boosts the performance of the VQA module and navigation module, leading to 4.9 % and 5.6 % overall improvement in EQA accuracy on House3D and Matterport3D datasets respectively. | 2021 | Multi-View Spatial-Temporal Model for Travel Time EstimationabstractTaxi arrival time prediction is essential for building intelligent transportation systems. Traditional prediction methods mainly rely on extracting features from traffic maps, which cannot model complex situations and nonlinear spatial and temporal relationships. Therefore, we propose Multi-View Spatial-Temporal Model (MVSTM) to capture the mutual dependence of spatial-temporal relations and trajectory features. Specifically, we use graph2vec to model the spatial view, dual-channel temporal module to model the trajectory view, and structural embedding to model traffic semantics. Experiments on large-scale taxi trajectory data have shown that our approach is more effective than the existing novel methods. | 2021 | Guided Co-Segmentation Network for Fast Video Object SegmentationabstractSemi-supervised video object segmentation is a task of propagating instance masks given in the first frame to the entire video. It is a challenging task since it usually suffers from heavy occlusions, large deformation, and large variations of objects. To alleviate these problems, many existing works apply time-consuming techniques such as fine-tuning, post-processing, or extracting optical flow, which makes them intractable for online segmentation. In our work, we focus on online semi-supervised video object segmentation. We propose a GCSeg (Guided Co-Segmentation) Network which is mainly composed of a Reference Module and a Co-segmentation Module, to simultaneously incorporate the short-term, middle-term, and long-term temporal inter-frame relationships. Moreover, we propose an Adaptive Search Strategy to reduce the risk of propagating inaccurate segmentation results in subsequent frames. Our GCSeg network achieves state-of-the-art performance on online semi-supervised video object segmentation on Davis 2016 and Davis 2017 datasets. | 2021 | Progressive Self-Guided Loss for Salient Object DetectionabstractWe present a simple yet effective progressive self-guided loss function to facilitate deep learning-based salient object detection (SOD) in images. The saliency maps produced by the most relevant works still suffer from incomplete predictions due to the internal complexity of salient objects. Our proposed progressive self-guided loss simulates a morphological closing operation on the model predictions for progressively creating auxiliary training supervisions to step-wisely guide the training process. We demonstrate that this new loss function can guide the SOD model to highlight more complete salient objects step-by-step and meanwhile help to uncover the spatial dependencies of the salient object pixels in a region growing manner. Moreover, a new feature aggregation module is proposed to capture multi-scale features and aggregate them adaptively by a branch-wise attention mechanism. Benefiting from this module, our SOD framework takes advantage of adaptively aggregated multi-scale features to locate and detect salient objects effectively. Experimental results on several benchmark datasets show that our loss function not only advances the performance of existing SOD models without architecture modification but also helps our proposed framework to achieve state-of-the-art performance. | 2019 | Towards Robust Curve Text Detection With Conditional Spatial ExpansionabstractIt is challenging to detect curve texts due to their irregular shapes and varying sizes. In this paper, we first investigate the deficiency of the existing curve detection methods and then propose a novel Conditional Spatial Expansion (CSE) mechanism to improve the performance of curve text detection. Instead of regarding the curve text detection as a polygon regression or a segmentation problem, we treat it as a region expansion process. Our CSE starts with a seed arbitrarily initialized within a text region and progressively merges neighborhood regions based on the extracted local features by a CNN and contextual information of merged regions. The CSE is highly parameterized and can be seamlessly integrated into existing object detection frameworks. Enhanced by the data-dependent CSE mechanism, our curve text detection system provides robust instance-level text region extraction with minimal post-processing. The analysis experiment shows that our CSE can handle texts with various shapes, sizes, and orientations, and can effectively suppress the false-positives coming from text-like textures or unexpected texts included in the same RoI. Compared with the existing curve text detection algorithms, our method is more robust and enjoys a simpler processing flow. It also creates a new state-of-art performance on curve text benchmarks with Fscore of up to 78.4%. Zichuan Liu, Guosheng Lin, Sheng Yang 0006, Fayao Liu, Weisi Lin, Wang Ling Goh |

| 2018 | SqueezedText: A Real-Time Scene Text Recognition by Binary Convolutional Encoder-Decoder NetworkabstractA new approach for real-time scene text recognition is proposed in this paper. A novel binary convolutional encoder-decoder network (B-CEDNet) together with a bidirectional recurrent neural network (Bi-RNN). The B-CEDNet is engaged as a visual front-end to provide elaborated character detection, and a back-end Bi-RNN performs character-level sequential correction and classification based on learned contextual knowledge. The front-end B-CEDNet can process multiple regions containing characters using a one-off forward operation, and is trained under binary constraints with significant compression. Hence it leads to both remarkable inference run-time speedup as well as memory usage reduction. With the elaborated character detection, the back-end Bi-RNN merely processes a low dimension feature sequence with category and spatial information of extracted characters for sequence correction and classification. By training with over 1,000,000 synthetic scene text images, the B-CEDNet achieves a recall rate of 0.86, precision of 0.88 and F-score of 0.87 on ICDAR-03 and ICDAR-13. With the correction and classification by Bi-RNN, the proposed real-time scene text recognition achieves state-of-the-art accuracy while only consumes less than 1-ms inference run-time. The flow processing flow is realized on GPU with a small network size of 1.01 MB for B-CEDNet and 3.23 MB for Bi-RNN, which is much faster and smaller than the existing solutions. | 2018 | Learning Markov Clustering Networks for Scene Text DetectionabstractA novel framework named Markov Clustering Network (MCN) is proposed for fast and robust scene text detection. MCN predicts instance-level bounding boxes by firstly converting an image into a Stochastic Flow Graph (SFG) and then performing Markov Clustering on this graph. Our method can detect text objects with arbitrary size and orientation without prior knowledge of object size. The stochastic flow graph encode objects' local correlation and semantic information. An object is modeled as strongly connected nodes, which allows flexible bottom-up detection for scale-varying and rotated objects. MCN generates bounding boxes without using Non-Maximum Suppression, and it can be fully parallelized on GPUs. The evaluation on public benchmarks shows that our method outperforms the existing methods by a large margin in detecting multioriented text objects. MCN achieves new state-of-art performance on challenging MSRA-TD500 dataset with precision of 0.88, recall of 0.79 and F-score of 0.83. Also, MCN achieves realtime inference with frame rate of 34 FPS, which is 1.5× speedup when compared with the fastest scene text detection algorithm. | 2018 | A GPU-Outperforming FPGA Accelerator Architecture for Binary Convolutional Neural NetworksabstractFPGA-based hardware accelerators for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have received attention due to their higher energy efficiency than GPUs. However, it is challenging for FPGA-based solutions to achieve a higher throughput than GPU counterparts. In this article, we demonstrate that FPGA acceleration can be a superior solution in terms of both throughput and energy efficiency when a CNN is trained with binary constraints on weights and activations. Specifically, we propose an optimized fully mapped FPGA accelerator architecture tailored for bitwise convolution and normalization that features massive spatial parallelism with deep pipelines stages. A key advantage of the FPGA accelerator is that its performance is insensitive to data batch size, while the performance of GPU acceleration varies largely depending on the batch size of the data. Experiment results show that the proposed accelerator architecture for binary CNNs running on a Virtex-7 FPGA is 8.3× faster and 75× more energy-efficient than a Titan X GPU for processing online individual requests in small batch sizes. For processing static data in large batch sizes, the proposed solution is on a par with a Titan X GPU in terms of throughput while delivering 9.5× higher energy efficiency. | 2017 | An energy-efficient and high-throughput bitwise CNN on sneak-path-free digital ReRAM crossbarabstractConvolutional neural network (CNN) based machine learning requires a highly parallel as well as low power consumption (including leakage power) hardware accelerator. In this paper, we will present a digital ReRAM crossbar based CNN accelerator that can achieve significantly higher throughput and lower power consumption than state-of-arts. The CNN is trained with binary constraints on both weights and activations such that all operations become bitwise. With further use of 1-bit comparator, the bitwise CNN model can be naturally realized on a digital ReRAM-crossbar device. A novel sneak-path-free ReRAM-crossbar is further utilized for large-scale realization. Simulation experiments show that the bitwise CNN accelerator on the digital ReRAM crossbar achieves 98.3% and 91.4% accuracy on MNIST and CIFAR-10 benchmarks, respectively. Moreover, it has a peak throughput of 792GOPS at the power consumption of 6.3mW, which is 18.86 times higher throughput and 44.1 times lower power than CMOS CNN (non-binary) accelerators. | 2017 | Distributed In-Memory Computing on Binary RRAM CrossbarabstractThe recently emerging resistive random-access memory (RRAM) can provide nonvolatile memory storage but also intrinsic computing for matrix-vector multiplication, which is ideal for the low-power and high-throughput data analytics accelerator performed in memory. However, the existing RRAM crossbar--based computing is mainly assumed as a multilevel analog computing, whose result is sensitive to process nonuniformity as well as additional overhead from AD-conversion and I/O. In this article, we explore the matrix-vector multiplication accelerator on a binary RRAM crossbar with adaptive 1-bit-comparator--based parallel conversion. Moreover, a distributed in-memory computing architecture is also developed with the according control protocol. Both memory array and logic accelerator are implemented on the binary RRAM crossbar, where the logic-memory pair can be distributed with the control bus protocol. Experimental results have shown that compared to the analog RRAM crossbar, the proposed binary RRAM crossbar can achieve significant area savings with better calculation accuracy. Moreover, significant speedup can be achieved for matrix-vector multiplication in neural network--based machine learning such that the overall training and testing time can be both reduced. In addition, large energy savings can be also achieved when compared to the traditional CMOS-based out-of-memory computing architecture. Leibin Ni, Hantao Huang, Zichuan Liu, Rajiv V. | 2010 | Statistical Analysis of 3D Images Detects Regular Spatial Distributions of Centromeres and Chromocenters in Animal and Plant NucleiabstractIn eukaryotes, the interphase nucleus is organized in morphologically and/or functionally distinct nuclear "compartments". Numerous studies highlight functional relationships between the spatial organization of the nucleus and gene regulation. This raises the question of whether nuclear organization principles exist and, if so, whether they are identical in the animal and plant kingdoms. We addressed this issue through the investigation of the three-dimensional distribution of the centromeres and chromocenters. We investigated five very diverse populations of interphase nuclei at different differentiation stages in their physiological environment, belonging to rabbit embryos at the 8-cell and blastocyst stages, differentiated rabbit mammary epithelial cells during lactation, and differentiated cells of Arabidopsis thaliana plantlets. We developed new tools based on the processing of confocal images and a new statistical approach based on G- and F- distance functions used in spatial statistics. Our original computational scheme takes into account both size and shape variability by comparing, for each nucleus, the observed distribution against a reference distribution estimated by Monte-Carlo sampling over the same nucleus. This implicit normalization allowed similar data processing and extraction of rules in the five differentiated nuclei populations of the three studied biological systems, despite differences in chromosome number, genome organization and heterochromatin content. We showed that centromeres/chromocenters form significantly more regularly spaced patterns than expected under a completely random situation, suggesting that repulsive constraints or spatial inhomogeneities underlay the spatial organization of heterochromatic compartments. The proposed technique should be useful for identifying further spatial features in a wide range of cell types.
