| 2026 | Correcting Quantization-Induced Gradient Mismatch in Neural Image CompressionabstractIn recent years, neural image compression methods have achieved impressive performance in image compression tasks, most of which are based on variational auto-encoder with hyper-prior and autoregressive Gaussian entropy model. We first demonstrate that the way these end-to-end approaches handle quantization during training leads to a mismatch between the gradients direction of entropy model parameters (i.e., mean and standard deviation) and the direction they should be optimized towards during inference, making neural network difficult to learn accurate estimates of entropy model parameters. To address this issue, we then propose a two-step improvement: in the first step, use straight-through estimator to align the forward propagation during training with inference, thereby correcting the gradients of standard deviation parameters; in the second step, utilize gradients transfer that we propose and MSE-guided gradients to manually compensate for the gradients of mean parameters lost due to straight-through estimator. Finally, we also propose to freeze the auto-encoder and hyper auto-encoder in pre-trained models provided by existing works, and fine-tune only the modules that predict the entropy model parameters, enabling efficient validation of proposed improvements. Experimental results show that our improvements bring appreciable performance gains to state-of-the-art neural image compression models in recent years. Meanwhile, our improvements require no modification to the structure of pre-trained models and only lightweight fine-tuning, which shows strong plug-and-play capability and practical utility. | 2025 | Generalized Gaussian Entropy Model for Point Cloud Attribute Compression with Dynamic Likelihood IntervalsabstractGaussian and Laplacian entropy models are proved effective in learned point cloud attribute compression, as they assist in arithmetic coding of latents. However, we demonstrate through experiments that there is still unutilized information in entropy parameters estimated by neural networks in current methods, which can be used for more accurate probability estimation. Thus we introduce generalized Gaussian entropy model, which controls the tail shape through shape parameter to more accurately estimate the probability of latents. Meanwhile, to the best of our knowledge, existing methods use fixed likelihood intervals for each integer during arithmetic coding, which limits model performance. We propose Mean Error Discriminator (MED) to determine whether the entropy parameter estimation is accurate and then dynamically adjust likelihood intervals. Experiments show that our method significantly improves rate-distortion (RD) performance on three VAE-based models for point cloud attribute compression, and our method can be applied to other compression tasks, such as image and video compression. | 2025 | DPCSet: A Large-scale Dynamic Point Cloud Dataset for Compression and PerceptionabstractThe increasing demand for large-scale, high-quality datasets in dynamic point cloud compression (PCC) and human visual perception research underscores the limitations of existing datasets, which are often constrained by limited scale and insufficient dynamism, hindering algorithm validation and perceptual analysis in complex scenarios. To address this gap, we present DPCSet, a comprehensive dynamic point cloud dataset designed to support advanced research in PCC, human perception, and related domains. Comprising 100 dynamic object point clouds-the largest collection of its kind-DPCSet includes 200-frame sequences with geometry and attribute information, capturing diverse object types across real and virtual environments. Organized into seven superclasses, the dataset ensures broad scenario coverage. By rigorous selection, format conversion, quantization, DPCSet delivers standardized, high-precision point cloud data. Evaluation of multiple compression algorithms on a curated subset demonstrates DPCSet's efficacy in assessing trade-offs between compression efficiency and quality loss, positioning it as a potential benchmark for PCC. Furthermore, just noticeable distortion (JND) experiments on a compression-distorted subset reveal distinct perceptual characteristics of dynamic point clouds, offering valuable insights for perception-driven compression algorithms. The dataset is released at https://openi.pcl.ac.cn/gaowx/DPCSet. Wenxu Gao, Liang Xie 0013, Kangli Wang, Jingxuan Su, Changhao Peng, Wei Gao 0003 |

| 2024 | Laplacian Matrix Learning for Point Cloud Attribute Compression with Ternary Search-Based Adaptive Block PartitionabstractGraph Fourier Transform (GFT) has demonstrated significant effectiveness in point cloud attribute compression task. However, existing graph modeling methods are based on the geometric relationships of the points, which leads to reduced efficiency of graph transforms in cases where the correlation between attributes and geometry is weak. In this paper, we propose a novel graph modeling method based on attribute prediction values. Specifically, we utilize Gaussian priors to model prediction values, then use maximum a posteriori estimation to learn the Laplacian matrix that best fits the prediction values in order to conduct separate graph transforms on prediction values and ground truth values to derive residuals, and subsequently perform quantization and entropy coding on these residuals. Additionally, since the partitioning of point clouds directly affects the coding performance, We design an adaptive block partitioning method based on ternary search, which selects reference points using distance threshold r and performs block partitioning and non-reference point attribute prediction based on these reference points. By conducting ternary search on distance threshold r, we rapidly identify the optimal block partitioning strategy. Moreover, we introduce an efficient residual encoding method based on Morton codes for the attributes of reference points while the prediction attributes of non-reference points are modeled using the proposed graph-based modeling approach. Experimental results demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms two attribute compression methods employed by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) in lossless geometry based attribute compression tasks, with an average of 30.57% BD-rate gain compared to Predictive Lifting Transform (PLT), and an average of 33.54% BD-rate gain compared to Region-Adaptive Hierarchical Transform (RAHT), which exhibits significantly improved rate-distortion performance over the current state-of-the-art method based on GFT.
