| 2026 | d-MAR: Deep Metal Artifact Reduction via Diffusion-Driven Domain TransformationsabstractMetal implants introduce severe artifacts in CT images, compromising diagnostic reliability. Supervised metal artifact reduction (MAR) models trained on simulated data are effective but often fail due to domain gaps when applied to real clinical data. Unsupervised methods trained on real images avoid such gaps but suffer from weak artifact suppression and training instability. To address these challenges, we propose d-MAR, a novel MAR framework that performs diffusion-driven domain transformations between simulated and real image domains. Specifically, real image domain (RID) data is transformed into the simulated image domain (SID), processed by a MAR model trained on simulation-paired data, and transformed back into RID. We harness diffusion models as a transformation bridge and introduce two targeted conditional sampling techniques-conditional input and sampling enhancement-based on Fourier-extracted low-frequency image components. This enables domain alignment without random generation, ensuring consistent anatomical fidelity. The proposed d-MAR can reduce real metal artifacts originating from different scanning protocols and devices with a MAR model trained with simulated paired data. Evaluations on Clinical Head, Clinical Body, and dental CBCT datasets show that d-MAR consistently outperforms conventional MAR methods in both quantitative metrics and visual quality, demonstrating strong generalization capability. | 2021 | DCTResNet: Transform Domain Image Deblocking for Motion Blur ImagesabstractPixel recovery with deep learning has shown to be very effective for a variety of low-level vision tasks like image super-resolution, denoising, and deblurring. Most existing works operate in the spatial domain, and there are few works that exploit the transform domain for image restoration tasks. In this paper, we present a transform domain approach for image deblocking using a deep neural network called DCTResNet. Our application is compressed video motion deblur, where the input video frame has blocking artifacts that make the deblurring task very challenging. Specifically, we use a block-wise Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) to decompose the image into its low and high-frequency sub-band images and exploit the strong sub-band specific features for more effective deblocking solutions. Since JPEG also uses DCT for image compression, using DCT sub-band images for image deblocking helps to learn the JPEG compression prior to effectively correct the blocking artifacts. Our experimental results show that both PSNR and SSIM for DCTResNet perform more favorably than other state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods, while significantly faster in inference time. | 2015 | DeepFont: A System for Font Recognition and SimilarityabstractWe develop the DeepFont system, a large-scale learning-based solution for automatic font identification, organization and selection. In this proposed technical demonstration, we will give our audience a tour to the DeepFont system, with the focus on its impacts on real consumer products, including but not limited to: 1) a cloud-based iOS App for font recognition; 2) a web-based tool for font similarity evaluation and discovery. | 2009 | Bivariate Transfer Functions on Unstructured GridsabstractAbstract Multi‐dimensional transfer functions are commonly used in rectilinear volume renderings to effectively portray materials, material boundaries and even subtle variations along boundaries. However, most unstructured grid rendering algorithms only employ one‐dimensional transfer functions. This paper proposes a novel pre‐integrated Projected Tetrahedra (PT) rendering technique that applies bivariate transfer functions on unstructured grids. For each type of bivariate transfer function, an analytical form that pre‐integrates the contribution of a ray segment in one tetrahedron is derived, and can be precomputed as a lookup table to compute the color and opacity in a projected tetrahedron on‐the‐fly. Further, we show how to approximate the integral using the pre‐integration method for faster unstructured grid rendering. We demonstrate the advantages of our approach with a variety of examples and comparisons with one‐dimensional transfer functions. Yuyan Song, Wei Chen 0001, Ross Maciejewski, Kelly P. | 2006 | An Atmospheric Visual Analysis and Exploration SystemabstractMeteorological research involves the analysis of multi-field, multi-scale, and multi-source data sets. In order to better understand these data sets, models and measurements at different resolutions must be analyzed. Unfortunately, traditional atmospheric visualization systems only provide tools to view a limited number of variables and small segments of the data. These tools are often restricted to two-dimensional contour or vector plots or three-dimensional isosurfaces. The meteorologist must mentally synthesize the data from multiple plots to glean the information needed to produce a coherent picture of the weather phenomenon of interest. In order to provide better tools to meteorologists and reduce system limitations, we have designed an integrated atmospheric visual analysis and exploration system for interactive analysis of weather data sets. Our system allows for the integrated visualization of 1D, 2D, and 3D atmospheric data sets in common meteorological grid structures and utilizes a variety of rendering techniques. These tools provide meteorologists with new abilities to analyze their data and answer questions on regions of interest, ranging from physics-based atmospheric rendering to illustrative rendering containing particles and glyphs. In this paper, we will discuss the use and performance of our visual analysis for two important meteorological applications. The first application is warm rain formation in small cumulus clouds. Here, our three-dimensional, interactive visualization of modeled drop trajectories within spatially correlated fields from a cloud simulation has provided researchers with new insight. Our second application is improving and validating severe storm models, specifically the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. This is done through correlative visualization of WRF model and experimental Doppler storm data. Yuyan Song, Nikolai A. Svakhine, Sonia Lasher-Trapp, Mike Baldwin, David S. Ebert |
