| 2025 | A Survey of Optimization Modeling Meets LLMs: Progress and Future DirectionsabstractBy virtue of its great utility in solving real-world problems, optimization modeling has been widely employed for optimal decision-making across various sectors, but it requires substantial expertise from operations research professionals. With the advent of large language models (LLMs), new opportunities have emerged to automate the procedure of mathematical modeling. This survey presents a comprehensive and timely review of recent advancements that cover the entire technical stack, including data synthesis and fine-tuning for the base model, inference frameworks, benchmark datasets, and performance evaluation. In addition, we conducted an in-depth analysis on the quality of benchmark datasets, which was found to have a surprisingly high error rate. We cleaned the datasets and constructed a new leaderboard with fair performance evaluation in terms of base LLM model and datasets. We also build an online portal that integrates resources of cleaned datasets, code and paper repository to benefit the community. Finally, we identify limitations in current methodologies and outline future research opportunities. | 2024 | Enhancing LLM Reasoning via Vision-Augmented PromptingabstractVerbal and visual-spatial information processing are two critical subsystems that activate different brain regions and often collaborate together for cognitive reasoning. Despite the rapid advancement of LLM-based reasoning, the mainstream frameworks, such as Chain-of-Thought (CoT) and its variants, primarily focus on the verbal dimension, resulting in limitations in tackling reasoning problems with visual and spatial clues. To bridge the gap, we propose a novel dual-modality reasoning framework called Vision-Augmented Prompting (VAP). Upon receiving a textual problem description, VAP automatically synthesizes an image from the visual and spatial clues by utilizing external drawing tools. Subsequently, VAP formulates a chain of thought in both modalities and iteratively refines the synthesized image. Finally, a conclusive reasoning scheme based on self-alignment is proposed for final result generation. Extensive experiments are conducted across four versatile tasks, including solving geometry problems, Sudoku, time series prediction, and travelling salesman problem. The results validated the superiority of VAP over existing LLMs-based reasoning frameworks. | 2023 | Neural TSP Solver with Progressive DistillationabstractTravelling salesman problem (TSP) is NP-Hard with exponential search space. Recently, the adoption of encoder-decoder models as neural TSP solvers has emerged as an attractive topic because they can instantly obtain near-optimal results for small-scale instances. Nevertheless, their training efficiency and solution quality degrade dramatically when dealing with large-scale problems. To address the issue, we propose a novel progressive distillation framework, by adopting curriculum learning to train TSP samples in increasing order of their problem size and progressively distilling high-level knowledge from small models to large models via a distillation loss. In other words, the trained small models are used as the teacher network to guide action selection when training large models. To accelerate training speed, we also propose a Delaunary-graph based action mask and a new attention-based decoder to reduce decoding cost. Experimental results show that our approach establishes clear advantages over existing encoder-decoder models in terms of training effectiveness and solution quality. In addition, we validate its usefulness as an initial solution generator for the state-of-the-art TSP solvers, whose probability of obtaining the optimal solution can be further improved in such a hybrid manner. | 2020 | Trajectory Forecasting With Neural Networks: An Empirical Evaluation and A New Hybrid ModelabstractRecent years have witnessed the advent and prevalence of deep learning that have provoked storms in ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems). Consequently, traditional ML models in many applications have been replaced by the new learning techniques. In this paper, we focus on the problem of trajectory prediction, which is a cornerstone component to support many useful higher-level applications in ITS. We conduct so far the most comprehensive evaluation on various models proposed for trajectory prediction, including 5 statistic-based models and 10 deep-learning based networks. In addition, we propose a hybrid model that integrates MLP to extract local features and LSTM to capture long term dependency. It is also enhanced with a moving-state prediction model based on random forest to further reduce prediction error. We conduct extensive empirical evaluation on three real datasets with different motion patterns and reveal interesting findings. Furthermore, the experimental results show that our proposed hybrid model achieves superior performance over its competitors in all the datasets. Yuan Wang 0003, Dongxiang Zhang, Kian-Lee Tan |

| 2018 | CO2: Inferring Personal Interests From Raw Footprints by Connecting the Offline World with the Online WorldabstractUser-generated trajectories (UGTs), such as travel records from bus companies, capture rich information of human mobility in the offline world. However, some interesting applications of these raw footprints have not been exploited well due to the lack of textual information to infer the subject’s personal interests. Although there is rich semantic information contained in the spatial- and temporal-aware user-generated contents (STUGC) published in the online world, such as Twitter, less effort has been made to utilize this information to facilitate the interest discovery process. In this article, we design an effective probabilistic framework named CO 2 to connect the offline world with the online world in order to discover users’ interests directly from their raw footprints in UGT. CO 2 first infers trip intentions by utilizing the semantic information in STUGC and then discovers user interests by aggregating the intentions. To evaluate the effectiveness of CO 2 , we use two large-scale real-world datasets as a case study and further conduct a questionnaire survey to show the superior performance of CO 2 . | 2017 | IF-Matching: Towards Accurate Map-Matching with Information FusionabstractWith the advance of various location-acquisition technologies, a myriad of GPS trajectories can be collected every day. However, the raw coordinate data captured by sensors often cannot reflect real positions due to many physical constraints and some rules of law. How to accurately match GPS trajectories to roads on a digital map is an important issue. Many existing methods still cannot meet stringent performance requirements, especially for low/unstable sampling rate and noisy/lost data. As in practice, some other measurements such as speed and moving direction are collected together with the spatial locations acquired, we can make use of not only location coordinates but all data collected. In this paper, we propose a novel model using the related meta-information to describe a moving object, and present an algorithm called IF-Matching for map-matching. It can handle many ambiguous cases which cannot be correctly matched by existing methods. We run our algorithm with taxi trajectory data on a city-wide road network. Compared with two state-of-the-art algorithms of ST-Matching and the winner of GIS Cup 2012, our approach achieves more accurate results. Gang Hu 0004, Jie Shao 0001, Yuan Wang 0003, Heng Tao Shen |

| 2017 | A Data-Driven and Optimal Bus Scheduling Model With Time-Dependent Traffic and DemandabstractUrban bus companies have collected a tremendous amount of travel data from passengers in the past years. In spite of great value for bus schedule optimization, these data have not been fully exploited. In this paper, we leverage hundreds of millions of bus transaction records, generated when passengers board and alight, to infer time-dependent traffic and customer demand. When the traffic and demand information are available, we build an optimal model to schedule the departure time of each bus service with the objective of minimizing the average waiting time. Experimental results show that compared with the existing bus scheduling system, our model can help reduce the waiting time by a wide margin. However, the raw coordinate data captured by sensors often cannot reflect real positions due to many physical constraints and some rules of law. How to accurately match GPS trajectories to roads on a digital map is an important issue. The problem of map-matching is fundamental for many applications. Unfortunately, many existing methods still cannot meet stringent performance requirements in engineering. In particular, low/unstable sampling rate and noisy/lost data are usually big challenges. | 2015 | SINGA: A Distributed Deep Learning PlatformabstractDeep learning has shown outstanding performance in various machine learning tasks. However, the deep complex model structure and massive training data make it expensive to train. In this paper, we present a distributed deep learning system, called SINGA, for training big models over large datasets. An intuitive programming model based on the layer abstraction is provided, which supports a variety of popular deep learning models. SINGA architecture supports both synchronous and asynchronous training frameworks. Hybrid training frameworks can also be customized to achieve good scalability. SINGA provides different neural net partitioning schemes for training large models. SINGA is an Apache Incubator project released under Apache License 2. | 2005 | DXEC: integrating database, XML and email for collaborationabstractThis paper introduces DXEC, a database, XML and email enabled framework for better collaborative work. The framework use emails as the main collaboration medium, which are mainly generated automatically by OA applications and groupware systems. But instead of using them naively, each email in the system are wrapped in a XML envelop, which provides superior searching and filtering ability. Emails are stored in a XML enable database, and a XML filter engine is used to filter the incoming messages and disseminate them to relevant audiences. User profile in XPath, which can be specified by hand and refined through feedbacks, are used by the filter engine to ensure everyone received only interested messages. In this paper, we present the architecture of DXEC and introduce major components and important algorithms. We also demonstrate its use in software development process.
