2024 Automatic Controllable Colorization via Imagination
abstract
We propose a framework for automatic colorization that allows for iterative editing and modifications. The core of our framework lies in an imagination module: by understanding the content within a grayscale image, we utilize a pre-trained image generation model to generate multiple images that contain the same content. These images serve as references for coloring, mimicking the process of human experts. As the synthesized images can be imperfect or different from the original grayscale image, we propose a Reference Refinement Module to select the optimal reference composition. Unlike most previous end-to-end automatic colorization algorithms, our framework allows for iterative and localized modifications of the colorization results because we explicitly model the coloring samples. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our framework over existing automatic colorization algorithms in editability and flexibility. 2023 Improving Video Super-Resolution with Long-Term Self-Exemplars
abstract
Existing video super-resolution methods often utilize a few neighboring frames to generate a higher-resolution image for each frame. However, the abundant information in distant frames has not been fully exploited in these methods: corresponding patches of the same instance appear across distant frames at different scales. Based on this observation, we propose to improve the video super-resolution quality with long-term cross-scale aggregation that leverages similar patches (self-exemplars) across distant frames. Our method can be implemented as post-processing for any super-resolution methods to improve performance. Our model consists of a multi-reference alignment module to fuse the features derived from similar patches: we fuse the features of distant references to perform high-quality super-resolution. We also propose a novel and practical training strategy for reference-based super-resolution. To evaluate the performance of our proposed method, we conduct extensive experiments on our collected CarCam dataset, the Waymo Open dataset, and the REDS dataset, and the results demonstrate our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

2023 Video Waterdrop Removal via Spatio-Temporal Fusion in Driving Scenes
abstract
The waterdrops on windshields during driving can cause severe visual obstructions, which may lead to car accidents. Meanwhile, the waterdrops can also degrade the performance of a computer vision system in autonomous driving. To address these issues, we propose an attention-based framework that fuses the spatio-temporal representations from multiple frames to restore visual information occluded by waterdrops. Due to the lack of training data for video waterdrop removal, we propose a large-scale synthetic dataset with simulated waterdrops in complex driving scenes on rainy days. To improve the generality of our proposed method, we adopt a cross-modality training strategy that combines synthetic videos and real-world images. Extensive experiments show that our proposed method can generalize well and achieve the best waterdrop removal performance in complex real-world driving scenes.

2023 AniPortraitGAN: Animatable 3D Portrait Generation from 2D Image Collections
abstract
Previous animatable 3D-aware GANs for human generation have primarily focused on either the human head or full body. However, head-only videos are relatively uncommon in real life, and full body generation typically does not deal with facial expression control and still has challenges in generating high-quality results. Towards applicable video avatars, we present an animatable 3D-aware GAN that generates portrait images with controllable facial expression, head pose, and shoulder movements. It is a generative model trained on unstructured 2D image collections without using 3D or video data. For the new task, we base our method on the generative radiance manifold representation and equip it with learnable facial and head-shoulder deformations. A dual-camera rendering and adversarial learning scheme is proposed to improve the quality of the generated faces, which is critical for portrait images. A pose deformation processing network is developed to generate plausible deformations for challenging regions such as long hair. Experiments show that our method, trained on unstructured 2D images, can generate diverse and high-quality 3D portraits with desired control over different properties.

2022 Optimizing Video Prediction via Video Frame Interpolation
abstract
Video prediction is an extrapolation task that predicts future frames given past frames, and video frame interpolation is an interpolation task that estimates intermediate frames between two frames. We have witnessed the tremendous advancement of video frame interpolation, but the general video prediction in the wild is still an open question. Inspired by the photo-realistic results of video frame interpolation, we present a new optimization framework for video prediction via video frame interpolation, in which we solve an extrapolation problem based on an interpolation model. Our video prediction framework is based on optimization with a pretrained differentiable video frame interpolation module without the need for a training dataset, and thus there is no domain gap issue between training and test data. Also, our approach does not need any additional information such as semantic or instance maps, which makes our framework applicable to any video. Extensive experiments on the Cityscapes, KITTI, DAVIS, Middlebury, and Vimeo90K datasets show that our video prediction results are robust in general scenarios, and our approach outperforms other video prediction methods that require a large amount of training data or extra semantic information.

2022 AniFaceGAN: Animatable 3D-Aware Face Image Generation for Video Avatars
abstract
Although 2D generative models have made great progress in face image generation and animation, they often suffer from undesirable artifacts such as 3D inconsistency when rendering images from different camera viewpoints. This prevents them from synthesizing video animations indistinguishable from real ones. Recently, 3D-aware GANs extend 2D GANs for explicit disentanglement of camera pose by leveraging 3D scene representations. These methods can well preserve the 3D consistency of the generated images across different views, yet they cannot achieve fine-grained control over other attributes, among which facial expression control is arguably the most useful and desirable for face animation. In this paper, we propose an animatable 3D-aware GAN for multiview consistent face animation generation. The key idea is to decompose the 3D representation of the 3D-aware GAN into a template field and a deformation field, where the former represents different identities with a canonical expression, and the latter characterizes expression variations of each identity. To achieve meaningful control over facial expressions via deformation, we propose a 3D-level imitative learning scheme between the generator and a parametric 3D face model during adversarial training of the 3D-aware GAN. This helps our method achieve high-quality animatable face image generation with strong visual 3D consistency, even though trained with only unstructured 2D images. Extensive experiments demonstrate our superior performance over prior works. Project page: \url{https://yuewuhkust.github.io/AniFaceGAN/

2021 Embedding Novel Views in a Single JPEG Image
abstract
We propose a novel approach for embedding novel views in a single JPEG image while preserving the perceptual fidelity of the modified JPEG image and the restored novel views. We adopt the popular novel view synthesis representation of multiplane images (MPIs). Our model first encodes 32 MPI layers (totally 128 channels) into a 3-channel JPEG image that can be decoded for MPIs to render novel views, with an embedding capacity of 1024 bits per pixel. We conducted experiments on public datasets with different novel view synthesis methods, and the results show that the proposed method can restore high-fidelity novel views from a slightly modified JPEG image. Furthermore, our method is robust to JPEG compression, color adjusting, and cropping. Our source code will be publicly available.

2020 Future Video Synthesis With Object Motion Prediction
abstract
We present an approach to predict future video frames given a sequence of continuous video frames in the past. Instead of synthesizing images directly, our approach is designed to understand the complex scene dynamics by decoupling the background scene and moving objects. The appearance of the scene components in the future is predicted by non-rigid deformation of the background and affine transformation of moving objects. The anticipated appearances are combined to create a reasonable video in the future. With this procedure, our method exhibits much less tearing or distortion artifact compared to other approaches. Experimental results on the Cityscapes and KITTI datasets show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of visual quality and accuracy.

2017 Saliency map generation based on saccade target theory
abstract
In this paper, a novel saliency map generation approach based on the saccade target theory is proposed. A probabilistic model of transsaccadic integration is built based on four cues that influence human visual attention: foveaperiphery resolution discrepancy, visual memory, oculomotor bias and inhibition of return (IOR), where visual memory is formulated as combination of the visual short-term memory (VSTM) and the visual long-term memory (VLTM). A sequence of fixations is generated based on the model to simulate the shift of attention. The proposed approach is evaluated on both perspectives of the accuracy of generated saliency maps and scanpaths. As demonstrated in the experiments, our method provides better estimated saliency maps and scanpaths on eye tracking datasets when compared to several state-of-the-art models.
