| 2026 | Talk With Your Fingers: A Depth-Aware Benchmark for Air-Writing RecognitionabstractAir-writing has emerged as a promising communication modality for AR/VR and metaverse environments, enabling quiet, non-contact text input by translating finger movements into natural language. However, existing approaches typically project in-air writing onto a virtual 2D plane and assume characters are formed with a single continuous stroke–an oversimplification that neglects the rich 3D structure inherent in natural handwriting. In this work, we challenge the “single-stroke 2D” paradigm and explore the role of depth cues in enhancing air-writing recognition. To this end, we present DAAWBench, the first large-scale Depth-Aware Air-Writing dataset, featuring 8.8 million RGB-D frames annotated with 3,755 Chinese characters from the GB2312-80 Level-1 set. Our analysis reveals consistent depth variations at stroke boundaries, indicating that stroke segmentation and character recognition can benefit from depth modeling. Based on these insights, we propose DARec, a novel 3D trajectory-based recognition model that effectively leverages depth-aware priors. Extensive experiments across in-domain and out-of-domain settings, including evaluations with vision-language models (e.g., GPT-4o, Qwen-VL) and human baselines, show that DARec significantly outperforms 2D-only counterparts, achieving 87.73% accuracy versus 9.05%. Our findings demonstrate the critical importance of depth modeling in human-computer co-creative interfaces, and we will publicly release our dataset and code at https://github.com/wmeiqi/DAAWBench. | 2025 | Timestep Embedding Tells: It's Time to Cache for Video Diffusion ModelabstractAs a fundamental backbone for video generation, diffusion models are challenged by low inference speed due to the sequential nature of denoising. Previous methods speed up the models by caching and reusing model outputs at uniformly selected timesteps. However, such a strategy neglects the fact that differences among model outputs are not uniform across timesteps, which hinders selecting the appropriate model outputs to cache, leading to a poor balance between inference efficiency and visual quality. In this study, we introduce Timestep Embedding Aware Cache (TeaCache), a training-free caching approach that estimates and leverages the fluctuating differences among model outputs across timesteps. Rather than directly using the time-consuming model outputs, TeaCache focuses on model inputs, which have a strong correlation with the modeloutputs while incurring negligible computational cost. TeaCache first modulates the noisy inputs using the timestep embeddings to ensure their differences better approximating those of model outputs. TeaCache then introduces a rescaling strategy to refine the estimated differences and utilizes them to indicate output caching. Experiments show that TeaCache achieves up to 4.41× acceleration over Open-Sora-Plan with negligible (-0.07% Vbench score) degradation of visual quality. | 2025 | DynRefer: Delving into Region-level Multimodal Tasks via Dynamic ResolutionabstractOne fundamental task of multimodal models is to translate referred image regions to human preferred language descriptions. Existing methods, however, ignore the resolution adaptability needs of different tasks, which hinders them to find out precise language descriptions. In this study, we propose a DynRefer approach, to pursue high-accuracy region-level referring through mimicking the resolution adaptability of human visual cognition. During training, DynRefer stochastically aligns language descriptions of multimodal tasks with images of multiple resolutions, which are constructed by nesting a set of random views around the referred region. During inference, DynRefer performs selectively multimodal referring by sampling proper region representations for tasks from the nested views based on image and task priors. This allows the visual information for referring to better match human preferences, thereby improving the representational adaptability of region-level multimodal models. Experiments show that DynRefer brings mutual improvement upon broad tasks including region-level captioning, open-vocabulary region recognition and attribute detection. Furthermore, DynRefer achieves state-of-the-art results on multiple region-level multimodal tasks using a single model. Code is available at https://github.com/callsys/DynRefer. | 2025 | From Easy to Hard: Building a Shortcut for Differentially Private Image SynthesisabstractDifferentially private (DP) image synthesis aims to generate synthetic images from a sensitive dataset, alleviating the privacy leakage concerns of organizations sharing and utilizing synthetic images. Although previous methods have significantly progressed, especially in training diffusion models on sensitive images with DP Stochastic Gradient Descent (DP-SGD), they still suffer from unsatisfactory performance. In this work, inspired by curriculum learning, we propose a two-stage DP image synthesis framework, where diffusion models learn to generate DP synthetic images from easy to hard. Unlike existing methods that directly use DP-SGD to train diffusion models, we propose an easy stage in the beginning, where diffusion models learn simple features of the sensitive images. To facilitate this easy stage, we propose to use ‘central images’, simply aggregations of random samples of the sensitive dataset. Intuitively, although those central images do not show details, they demonstrate useful characteristics of all images and only incur minimal privacy costs, thus helping early-phase model training. We conduct experiments to present that on the average of four investigated image datasets, the fidelity and utility metrics of our synthetic images are 33.1% and 2.1% better than the state-of-the-art method. | 2025 | CC-Diff++: Spatially Controllable Text-to-Image Synthesis for Remote Sensing With Enhanced Contextual CoherenceabstractGenerating visually realistic remote sensing (RS) images requires maintaining semantic coherence between objects and their surrounding environments. However, existing image synthesis methods prioritize foreground controllability while oversimplifying backgrounds into plain or generic textures. This oversight neglects the crucial interaction between foreground and background elements, resulting in semantic inconsistencies in RS scenarios. To address this challenge, we propose CC-Diff++, a Diffusion Model-based approach for spatially controllable RS image synthesis with enhanced Context Coherence. To capture spatial interdependence, we propose a novel module named Co-Resampler, which employs an advanced masked attention mechanism to jointly extract features from both the foreground and background while modeling their mutual relationships. Furthermore, we introduce a text-to-layout prediction module powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) and a reference image retrieval mechanism for providing rich textural guidance, which work together to enable CC-Diff++ to generate outputs that are both more diverse and more realistic. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CC-Diff++ outperforms state-of-the-art methods in visual fidelity, semantic accuracy, and positional precision on multiple RS datasets. CC-Diff++ also shows strong trainability, improving detection accuracy by 2.04 mAP on DOTA and 11.81 mAP on the HRSC dataset. Mu Zhang 0019, Yunfan Liu 0001, Yuzhong Zhao, Qixiang Ye |

| 2024 | Evaluation of Text-to-Video Generation Models: A Dynamics PerspectiveabstractComprehensive and constructive evaluation protocols play an important role when developing sophisticated text-to-video (T2V) generation models. Existing evaluation protocols primarily focus on temporal consistency and content continuity, yet largely ignore dynamics of video content. Such dynamics is an essential dimension measuring the visual vividness and the honesty of video content to text prompts. In this study, we propose an effective evaluation protocol, termed DEVIL, which centers on the dynamics dimension to evaluate T2V generation models, as well as improving existing evaluation metrics. In practice, we define a set of dynamics scores corresponding to multiple temporal granularities, and a new benchmark of text prompts under multiple dynamics grades. Upon the text prompt benchmark, we assess the generation capacity of T2V models, characterized by metrics of dynamics ranges and T2V alignment. Moreover, we analyze the relevance of existing metrics to dynamics metrics, improving them from the perspective of dynamics. Experiments show that DEVIL evaluation metrics enjoy up to about 90\% consistency with human ratings, demonstrating the potential to advance T2V generation models. | 2024 | VMamba: Visual State Space ModelabstractDesigning computationally efficient network architectures remains an ongoing necessity in computer vision. In this paper, we adapt Mamba, a state-space language model, into VMamba, a vision backbone with linear time complexity. At the core of VMamba is a stack of Visual State-Space (VSS) blocks with the 2D Selective Scan (SS2D) module. By traversing along four scanning routes, SS2D bridges the gap between the ordered nature of 1D selective scan and the non-sequential structure of 2D vision data, which facilitates the collection of contextual information from various sources and perspectives. Based on the VSS blocks, we develop a family of VMamba architectures and accelerate them through a succession of architectural and implementation enhancements. Extensive experiments demonstrate VMamba’s
promising performance across diverse visual perception tasks, highlighting its superior input scaling efficiency compared to existing benchmark models. | 2024 | Finger in Camera Speaks Everything: Unconstrained Air-Writing for Real-WorldabstractAir-writing is a challenging task that combines the fields of computer vision and natural language processing, offering an intuitive and natural approach for human-computer interaction. However, current air-writing solutions face two primary challenges: (1) their dependency on complex sensors (e.g., Radar, EEGs and others) for capturing precise handwritten trajectories, and (2) the absence of a video-based air-writing dataset that covers a comprehensive vocabulary range. These limitations impede their practicality in various real-world scenarios, including the use on devices like iPhones and laptops. To tackle these challenges, we present the groundbreaking air-writing Chinese character video dataset (AWCV-100K), serving as a pioneering benchmark for video-based air-writing. This dataset captures handwritten trajectories in various real-world scenarios using commonly accessible RGB cameras, eliminating the need for complex sensors. AWCV-100K includes 8.8 million video frames, encompassing the complete set of 3,755 characters from the GB2312-80 level-1 set (GB1). Furthermore, we introduce our baseline approach, the video-based character recognizer (VCRec). VCRec adeptly extracts fingertip features from sparse visual cues and employs a spatio-temporal sequence module for analysis. Experimental results showcase the superior performance of VCRec compared to existing models in recognizing air-written characters, both quantitatively and qualitatively. This breakthrough paves the way for enhanced human-computer interaction in real-world contexts. Moreover, our approach leverages affordable RGB cameras, enabling its applicability in a diverse range of scenarios. The code and data examples will be made public at https://github.com/wmeiqi/AWCV. | 2024 | Continual Learning for Image Segmentation With Dynamic QueryabstractImage segmentation based on continual learning exhibits a critical drop of performance, mainly due to catastrophic forgetting and background shift, as they are required to incorporate new classes continually. In this paper, we propose a simple, yet effective Continual Image Segmentation method with incremental Dynamic Query (CISDQ), which decouples the representation learning of both old and new knowledge with lightweight query embedding. CISDQ mainly includes three contributions: 1) We definedynamic querieswith adaptive background class to exploit past knowledge and learn future classes naturally. 2) CISDQ proposes a class/instance-aware Query Guided Knowledge Distillation strategy to overcome catastrophic forgetting by capturing the inter-class diversity and intra-class identity. 3) Apart from semantic segmentation, CISDQ introduce the continual learning forinstance segmentationin which instance-wise labeling and supervision are considered. Extensive experiments on three datasets for two tasks (i.e. continual semantic and instance segmentation are conducted to demonstrate that CISDQ achieves the state-of-the-art performance, specifically, obtaining 4.4% and 2.9% mIoU improvements for the ADE 100-10 (6 steps) setting and ADE 100-5 (11 steps) setting. | 2023 | DiffuMask: Synthesizing Images with Pixel-level Annotations for Semantic Segmentation Using Diffusion ModelsabstractCollecting and annotating images with pixel-wise labels is time-consuming and laborious. In contrast, synthetic data can be freely available using a generative model (e.g., DALL-E, Stable Diffusion). In this paper, we show that it is possible to automatically obtain accurate semantic masks of synthetic images generated by the Off-the-shelf Stable Diffusion model, which uses only text-image pairs during training. Our approach, termed DiffuMask, exploits the potential of the cross-attention map between text and image, which is natural and seamless to extend the text-driven image synthesis to semantic mask generation. DiffuMask uses text-guided cross-attention information to localize class/word-specific regions, which are combined with practical techniques to create a novel high-resolution and class-discriminative pixel-wise mask. The methods help to significantly reduce data collection and annotation costs. Experiments demonstrate that the existing segmentation methods trained on synthetic data of DiffuMask can achieve a competitive performance over the counterpart of real data (VOC 2012, Cityscapes). For some classes (e.g., bird), DiffuMask presents promising performance, close to the state-of-the-art result of real data (within 3% mIoU gap). Moreover, in the open-vocabulary segmentation (zero-shot) setting, DiffuMask achieves new state-of-the-art results on the Unseen classes of VOC 2012. | 2023 | Generative Prompt Model for Weakly Supervised Object LocalizationabstractWeakly supervised object localization (WSOL) remains challenging when learning object localization models from image category labels. Conventional methods that discriminatively train activation models ignore representative yet less discriminative object parts. In this study, we propose a generative prompt model (GenPromp), defining the first generative pipeline to localize less discriminative object parts by formulating WSOL as a conditional image denoising procedure. During training, GenPromp converts image category labels to learnable prompt embeddings which are fed to a generative model to conditionally recover the input image with noise and learn representative embeddings. During inference, GenPromp combines the representative embeddings with discriminative embeddings (queried from an off-the-shelf vision-language model) for both representative and discriminative capacity. The combined embeddings are finally used to generate multi-scale high-quality attention maps, which facilitate localizing full object extent. Experiments on CUB-200-2011 and ILSVRC show that GenPromp respectively outperforms the best discriminative models by 5.2% and 5.6% (Top-1 Loc), setting a solid baseline for WSOL with the generative model. | 2023 | Explore Faster Localization Learning For Scene Text DetectionabstractGenerally, pre-training and long-time training computation are necessary for obtaining a good-performance text detector based on deep networks. In this paper, we present a new scene text detection network (called FANet) with a Fast convergence speed and Accurate text localization. The proposed FANet is an end-to-end text detector based on transformer feature learning and normalized Fourier descriptor modeling, where the Fourier Descriptor Proposal Network and Iterative Text Decoding Network are designed to efficiently and accurately identify text proposals. Additionally, a Dense Matching Strategy and a well-designed loss function are also proposed for optimizing the network performance. Extensive experiments are carried out to demonstrate that the proposed FANet can achieve the SOTA performance with fewer training epochs and no pretraining. When we introduce additional data for pre-training, the proposed FANet can achieve SOTA performance on MSRA-TD500, CTW1500, and TotalText. The ablation experiments also verify the effectiveness of our contributions. Code is available at https://github.com/callsys/FANet. Yuzhong Zhao, Yuanqiang Cai, Weijia Wu 0001, Weiqiang Wang 0001 |

| 2023 | FlowText: Synthesizing Realistic Scene Text Video with Optical Flow EstimationabstractCurrent video text spotting methods can achieve preferable performance, powered with sufficient labeled training data. However, labeling data manually is time-consuming and labor-intensive. To overcome this, using low-cost synthetic data is a promising alternative. This paper introduces a novel video text synthesis technique called FlowText, which utilizes optical flow estimation to synthesize a large amount of text video data at a low cost for training robust video text spotters. Unlike existing methods that focus on image-level synthesis, FlowText concentrates on synthesizing temporal information of text instances across consecutive frames using optical flow. This temporal information is crucial for accurately tracking and spotting text in video sequences, including text movement, distortion, appearance, disappearance, shelter, and blur. Experiments show that combining general detectors like TransDETR with the proposed FlowText produces remarkable results on various datasets, such as ICDAR2015video and ICDAR2013video. | 2023 | DatasetDM: Synthesizing Data with Perception Annotations Using Diffusion ModelsabstractCurrent deep networks are very data-hungry and benefit from training on large-scale datasets, which are often time-consuming to collect and annotate. By contrast, synthetic data can be generated infinitely using generative models such as DALL-E and diffusion models, with minimal effort and cost. In this paper, we present DatasetDM, a generic dataset generation model that can produce diverse synthetic
images and the corresponding high-quality perception annotations (e.g., segmentation masks, and depth). Our method builds upon the pre-trained diffusion model and extends text-guided image synthesis to perception data generation. We show that the rich latent code of the diffusion model can be effectively decoded as accurate perception annotations using a decoder module. Training the decoder only needs less than 1% (around 100 images) of manually labeled images, enabling the generation of an infinitely large annotated dataset. Then these synthetic data can be used for training various perception models on downstream tasks. To showcase the power of the proposed approach, we generate datasets with rich dense pixel-wise labels for a wide range of downstream tasks, including semantic15
segmentation, instance segmentation, and depth estimation. Notably, it achieves 1) state-of-the-art results on semantic segmentation and instance segmentation; 2) significantly more efficient and robust in domain generalization than the real data; 3) state-of-the-art results in zero-shot segmentation setting; and 4) flexibility for efficient application and novel task composition (e.g., image editing) Weijia Wu 0001, Yuzhong Zhao, Hao Chen 0041, Yuchao Gu, Rui Zhao 0001, Yefei He, Zheng Shou 0001, Chunhua Shen |

| 2023 | OceanBase Paetica: A Hybrid Shared-nothing/Shared-everything Database for Supporting Single Machine and Distributed ClusterabstractIn the ongoing evolution of the OceanBase database system, it is essential to enhance its adaptability to small-scale enterprises. The OceanBase database system has demonstrated its stability and effectiveness within the Ant Group and other commercial organizations, besides through the TPC-C and TPC-H tests. In this paper, we have designed a stand-alone and distributed integrated architecture named Paetica to address the overhead caused by the distributed components in the stand-alone mode, with respect to the OceanBase system. Paetica enables adaptive configuration of the database that allows OceanBase to support both serial and parallel executions in stand-alone and distributed scenarios, thus providing efficiency and economy. This design has been implemented in version 4.0 of the OceanBase system, and the experiments show that Paetica exhibits notable scalability and outperforms alternative stand-alone or distributed databases. Furthermore, it enables the transition of OceanBase from primarily serving large enterprises to truly catering to small and medium enterprises, by employing a single OceanBase database for the successive stages of enterprise or business development, without the requirement for migration. Our experiments confirm that Paetica has achieved linear scalability with the increasing CPU core number within the stand-alone mode. It also outperforms MySQL and Greenplum in the Sysbench and TPC-H evaluations. Zhifeng Yang, Quanqing Xu, Shanyan Gao, Chuanhui Yang, Yuzhong Zhao, Fanyu Kong 0004, Wanhong Wang, Jinliang Xiao |

| 2023 | Detect Arbitrary-Shaped Text via Adaptive Thresholding and Localization Quality EstimationabstractThe two-stage scene text detection algorithms based on Mask R-CNN have achieved good performances on multiple challenging benchmarks. However, their effectiveness is degraded due to artificially setting constant thresholds and low localization quality of candidate boxes. In this paper, we present a novel scene text detection method based on Mask R-CNN and the proposed method, named LOAD, proposes adaptive threshold module and localization quality estimation module to address the above two problems. We propose two kinds of adaptive thresholds which are used for the filtering of candidate boxes and the binarization of pixels respectively. We introduce the self-attention mechanism to obtain the global information for generating the adaptive thresholds. Besides, we introduce the localization quality estimation into our model to obtain more accurate candidate boxes for subsequent segmentation. Comparative experiments are conducted on five benchmarks(ICDAR 2015, ICDAR 2017, MSRA-TD500, Total-Text and CTW1500), and the results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art performance with an F-measure of 91.0%, 78.7%, 87.4%, 90.6% and 86.0%. We also provide adequate ablation experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed components. Peirui Cheng, Yuzhong Zhao, Weiqiang Wang 0001 |

| 2022 | OceanBase: A 707 Million tpmC Distributed Relational Database SystemabstractWe have designed and developed OceanBase, a distributed relational database system from the very basics for a decade. Being a scale-out multi-tenant system, OceanBase is cross-region fault tolerant, which is based on the shared-nothing architecture. Besides sharing many similar goals with alternative distributed DBMS, such as horizontal scalability, fault-tolerance, etc., our design has been driven by the demands of typical RDBMS compatibility as well as both on-premise and off-premise deployments. OceanBase has fulfilled its design goal. It implements the salient features of certain mainstream classical RDBMS, and most applications on them can run on OceanBase, with or without a few minor modifications. Tens of thousands of OceanBase servers have been deployed in Alipay.com as well as many other commercial organizations. It has also successfully passed the TPC-C benchmark test and seized the first place with more than 707 million tpmC. This paper presents the goals, design criteria, infrastructure, and key components of OceanBase including its engines for storage and transaction processing. Further, it details how OceanBase achieves the above leading TPC-C benchmark in a distributed cluster with more than 1,500 servers from 3 zones. It also describes lessons what we have learnt in building OceanBase for more than a decade.
