| 2011 | Designs for improving the performance of an electro-thermal in-plane actuatorabstractReported presently are two designs to improve the performance of a “chevron” electro-thermal in-plane actuator. One incorporates beams with uniform cross-sections but nonuniform lengths and tilt angles to accommodate the thermally induced expansion of the “shuttle”; the other incorporates beams with non-uniform cross-sections to achieve a wider spread of the high temperature “expansion” regions of the beams. With the product of the actuation force and displacement defined as a figure-of-merit, it is verified using finite-element simulation that the incorporation of non-uniform lengths and tilt angles, and non-uniform beam cross-sections leads to respective improvement of 10 and 65% in the figure-of-merit. The effectiveness of these designs was also tested by micro-fabricating actuators occupying fixed device areas. | 2011 | Self-dependent equivalent circuit modeling of electrostatic comb transducers for integrated MEMSabstractThe paper presents a new equivalent circuit model of electrostatic comb transducers for large-scale integration of MEMS into LSI. The model detects the displacement using a dummy spring to express the current induced by the movement, and the model parameters can be derived from only its dimensions not from external parameters (acting force, applied voltage). In addition, the model is composed from basic circuit components. Therefore it is easily utilized in conventional circuit simulation software. In-plane two-degree-of-freedom comb model was applied to basic SOI resonator and the measured and simulated electrical and mechanical properties showed good agreement in each other. A simple oscillating circuit with constant amplitude control has been tested and the transient responses showed good agreement as well. | 1990 | Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier for Video Distribution NetworksabstractThe possibility of an application of Er-doped fiber amplifiers to AM-FDM (frequency division multiplexing) or FM-FDM video distribution networks is discussed. The measured noise and modulation distortion properties of ER-doped fiber amplifiers are good enough to meet even the severe quality standards set for trunk lines. A carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) of 57 dB for an AM-FDM transmission was measured. A second-order harmonic distortion (HD2) of less than -56 dB was measured by the monotone method (modulation depth m=50%), and a cross modulation distortion (XM) of less than -63 dB was measured by the two-tone method (m=25%*channel). On the basis of these values, composite second-order distortion (CSO) and XM in a 40-channel transmission were estimated as less than -57 dB and -73 dB, respectively. Significant reduction of noise and modulation distortion is made possible by optimizing the length of Er-doped fiber amplifiers and using input- and output-port isolators.> Etsugo Yoneda, Koji Kikushima, Toshiyuki Tsuchiya, Ko-Ichi Suto |
