| 2025 | Double-Word Decomposition in a Combined FP16, BF16 and FP32 Dot Product Add OperatorabstractThis work presents a floating-point Fused Dot Prod-uct Add operator designed for two use cases: mixed-precision matrix multiply add for deep learning and single-precision arithmetic for numerical computing. We build on classic double- word techniques to emulate FP32 arithmetic as the unevalu-ated sum of lower-precision floating-point numbers. Specifically, we introduce E9S12, a 9-bit exponent, 12-bit significant, non- normalized floating-point format, to represent either the FP16 and BF16 multiplicands or the results of the FP32 multiplicand decomposition inside a Fused Dot Product Add operator. The re-sulting operator correctly rounds the FP16 products accumulated in FP32 and also matches the standard FP32 FMA arithmetic when the size-4 E9S12 dot product operates on decomposed FP32 multiplicands. We evaluated the implementation of this combined FP16, BF16 and FP32 Dot Product Add operator and compare it to correctly rounded Fused Dot Product Add operators by synthesis for a$4\text{nm}$technolgy node. | 2025 | Architecting Value Prediction around In-Order ExecutionabstractIn the search for performance, in-order execution cannot expect to prevail as older long latency instructions prevent younger ones from issuing. Although stall-on-use processors allow independent instructions to issue in the shadow of a cache miss, the compiler cannot always find enough independent work to keep pipeline resources busy. In this paper, we study how both value prediction based on address prediction and direct value prediction can be built into an in-order pipeline to unlock significant performance. We further show that the in-order execution property provides advantages in that the pipeline may speculate aggressively without suffering from any recovery penalty. Finally, we combine this data speculation infrastructure with a reworked cache hierarchy that relies on a fast first level cache that can be written speculatively. We show that such an in-order pipeline can reach a performance level that is comparable to an equally - although moderately - wide out-of-order processor, without requiring support for partial out-of-order execution such as out-of-order memory hazard handling or full-fledged register renaming. Overall, we increase the performance of a 32 -entry scoreboard, 4-issue in-order processor based on a scaled up Open Hardware Group CVA6 by 38.4% (geomean), achieving $\mathbf{8 6. 7 \%}$ and $\mathbf{4 6. 3 \%}$ of the gains brought by comparable out-of-order processors featuring 32/16-entry and 64/32-entry Reorder Buffer and scheduler, respectively. | 2023 | Exact Fused Dot Product Add OperatorsabstractThis article explores architectures of exact (correctly rounded) fused dot product and add operators suitable for the FP32 and FP64 binary floating-point representations with subnormal support, and other representations with a wide dynamic range such as bfloat16. The exact summation of terms before rounding requires a full-size accumulator, and this work discusses techniques to compress the identical bits of this accumulator. This requires the computation of the relative shift amounts of the terms, which is formulated as a parallel prefix algorithm, allowing for a low-latency implementation. Architectural options for the exact fused dot product and add operators with up to 16 products for FP32, FP64 and mixed-precision BF16 to FP32 are evaluated using the TSMC 16FFC technology node. | 2023 | Exact Dot Product Accumulate Operators for 8-bit Floating-Point Deep LearningabstractLow bit-width floating-point formats appear as the main alternative to 8-bit integers for quantized deep learning applications. We propose an architecture for exact dot product accumulate operators and compare its implementation costs for different 8-bit floating-point formats: FP8 with five exponent bits and two fraction bits (E5M2), FP8 with four exponent bits and three fraction bits (E4M3), and Posit8 formats with different exponent sizes. The front-ends of these exact dot product accumulate operators take 8-bit multiplicands, expand their full-precision products to fixed-point, and sum terms into wide accumulators. The back-ends of these operators round down the wide accumulators contents first to FP32 and then to one of the 8-bit floating-point formats. We synthesize the proposed 8-bit floating-point exact dot product accumulate operators targeting the TSMC 16FFC node and compare their area and power to a baseline of operators with FP16 and INT8 multiplicands. | 2020 | A study of predictable execution models implementation for industrial data-flow applications on a multi-core platform with shared banked memoryabstractWe study the implementation of data-flow applications on multi-core processor with on-chip shared multi-banked memory. Specifically, we consider the Kalray MPPA2 processor and three applications coded using the industrial toolchain SCADE Suite. We focus on the runtime environment assuming global static scheduling, time-triggered and non-preemptive execution of tasks. Our contributions include (i) a technique to implement SCADE applications compliant with execution models inspired by PREMs (PRe-dictable Execution Models), (ii) an exhaustive comparison of three execution models with and without isolation, and finally (iii) guidelines for predictable implementation of a data-flow application on multi-core processors with shared on-chip memory. | 2019 | Consolidating High-Integrity, High-Performance, and Cyber-Security Functions on a Manycore ProcessorabstractThe requirement of high performance computing at low power can be met by the parallel execution of an application on a possibly large number of programmable cores. However, the lack of accurate timing properties may prevent parallel execution from being applicable to time-critical applications. This problem has been addressed by suitably designing the architecture, implementation, and programming models, of the Kalray MPPA (Multi-Purpose Processor Array) family of single-chip many-core processors. We introduce the third-generation MPPA processor, whose key features are motivated by the high-performance and high-integrity functions of automated vehicles. High-performance computing functions, represented by deep learning inference and by computer vision, need to execute under soft real-time constraints. High-integrity functions are developed under model-based design, and must meet hard real-time constraints. Finally, the third-generation MPPA processor integrates a hardware root of trust, and its security architecture is able to support a security kernel for implementing the trusted execution environment functions required by applications. | 2018 | Parallel code generation of synchronous programs for a many-core architectureabstractEmbedded systems tend to require more and more computational power. Many-core architectures are good candidates since they offer power and are considered more time predictable than classical multi-cores. Data-flow Synchronous languages such as Lustre or Scade are widely used for avionic critical software. Programs are described by networks of computational nodes. Implementation of such programs on a many-core architecture must ensure a bounded response time and preserve the functional behavior by taking interference into account. We consider the top-level node of a Lustre application as a software architecture description where each sub-node corresponds to a potential parallel task. Given a mapping (tasks to cores), we automatically generate code suitable for the targeted many-core architecture. This minimizes memory interferences and allows usage of a framework to compute the Worst-Case Response Time. Amaury Graillat, Matthieu Moy, Pascal Raymond, Benoît Dupont de Dinechin |

| 2018 | Co-Design and Abstraction of a Network-on-Chip Using Deterministic Network CalculusabstractNetwork-on-Chip (NoC) is the dominant paradigm for on-chip interconnects. Two approaches for architecting a NoC can be distinguished. One is the generalization of bus-based interconnects inside a SoC, where transactions are associated with memory addresses. The other is the on-chip integration of connection-oriented networks, which transport frames without addressing into the destination memory. Connection-oriented NoCs are well-suited to terminating macro-networks such as Ethernet, and to supporting quality of service (QoS) by using formal methods such as deterministic network calculus (DNC). We present the design objectives and architecture of the NoC of the 3rd-generation Kalray MPPA processor, which implements a clustered manycore architecture. The MPPA3 NoC is connected to high-speed Ethernet controllers that operate at level-2 for networking and at level-1 to extend the NoC protocol across processors. By contrast with the time-triggered approach for ensuring QoS, this NoC is designed to guarantee delays by the adequate configuration of DMA engines and traffic limiters at ingress. We discuss the abstraction of the MPPA3 NoC network elements for the purpose of bounding delays by application of a DNC formulation. Delay bounding and the associated usage domains are motivated by time-critical applications. Benoît Dupont de Dinechin |

| 2017 | Hierarchical Dataflow Model for efficient programming of clustered manycore processorsabstractProgramming Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chips (MPSoCs) with hundreds of heterogeneous Processing Elements (PEs), complex memory architectures, and Networks-on-Chips (NoCs) remains a challenge for embedded system designers. Dataflow Models of Computation (MoCs) are increasingly used for developing parallel applications as their high-level of abstraction eases the automation of mapping, task scheduling and memory allocation onto MPSoCs. This paper introduces a technique for deploying hierarchical dataflow graphs efficiently onto MPSoC. The proposed technique exploits different granularity of dataflow parallelism to generate both NoC-based communications and nested OpenMP loops. Deployment of an image processing application on a many-core MPSoC results in speedups of up to 58.7 compared to the sequential execution. | 2017 | Paving the Way Towards a Highly Energy-Efficient and Highly Integrated Compute Node for the Exascale Revolution: The ExaNoDe ApproachabstractPower consumption and high compute density are the key factors to be considered when building a compute node for the upcoming Exascale revolution. Current architectural design and manufacturing technologies are not able to provide the requested level of density and power efficiency to realise an operational Exascale machine. A disruptive change in the hardware design and integration process is needed in order to cope with the requirements of this forthcoming computing target. This paper presents the ExaNoDe H2020 research project aiming to design a highly energy efficient and highly integrated heterogeneous compute node targeting Exascale level computing, mixing low-power processors, heterogeneous co-processors and using advanced hardware integration technologies with the novel UNIMEM Global Address Space memory system. | 2017 | Improving 3D lattice boltzmann method stencil with asynchronous transfers on many-core processorsabstractCPU-based many-core processors present an alternative to multicore CPU and GPU processors. In particular, the 93-Petaflops Sunway supercomputer, built from clustered many-core processors, has opened a new era for high performance computing that does not rely on GPU acceleration. However, memory bandwidth remains the main challenge for these architectures. This motivates our endeavor for optimizing one of the most data-intensive kind of stencil computations, namely the three-dimensional applications of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). We propose optimizations on many-cores processors by using local memory and asynchronous software-prefetching on a representative 3D LBM solver as an example. We achieve 33 % performance gain on the Kalray MPPA-256 many-core processor by actively streaming data from/to local memory, compared to the “passive” OpenCL programming model. | 2016 | Optimal and fast throughput evaluation of CSDFabstractThe Synchronous Dataow Graph (SDFG) and Cyclo-Static Dataow Graph (CSDFG) are two well-known models, used practically by industry for many years, and for which there is a large number of analysis techniques. Yet, basic problems such as the throughput computation or the liveness evaluation are not well solved, and their complexity is still unknown. In this paper, we propose K-Iter, an iterative algorithm based on K-periodic scheduling to compute the throughput of a CSDFG. By using this technique, we are able to compute in less than a minute the throughput of industry applications for which no result was available before. | 2014 | Time-critical computing on a single-chip massively parallel processorabstractThe requirement of high performance computing at low power can be met by the parallel execution of an application on a possibly large number of programmable cores. However, the lack of accurate timing properties may prevent parallel execution from being applicable to time-critical applications. We illustrate how this problem has been addressed by suitably designing the architecture, implementation, and programming model, of the Kalray MPPA®-256 single-chip many-core processor. The MPPA®-256 (Multi-Purpose Processing Array) processor integrates 256 processing engine (PE) cores and 32 resource management (RM) cores on a single 28nm CMOS chip. These VLIW cores are distributed across 16 compute clusters and 4 I/O subsystems, each with a locally shared memory. On-chip communication and synchronization are supported by an explicitly addressed dual network-on-chip (NoC), with one node per compute cluster and 4 nodes per I/O subsystem. Off-chip interfaces include DDR, PCI and Ethernet, and a direct access to the NoC for low-latency processing of data streams. The key architectural features that support time-critical applications are timing compositional cores, independent memory banks inside the compute clusters, and the data NoC whose guaranteed services are determined by network calculus. The programming model provides communicators that effectively support distributed computing primitives such as remote writes, barrier synchronizations, active messages, and communication by sampling. POSIX time functions expose synchronous clocks inside compute clusters and mesosynchronous clocks across the MPPA®-256 processor. | 2012 | Efficient liveness computation using merge sets and DJ-graphsabstractIn this work we devise an efficient algorithm that computes the liveness information of program variables. The algorithm employs SSA form and DJ-graphs as representation to build Merge sets. The Merge set of node n , M ( n ) is based on the structure of the Control Flow Graph (CFG) and consists of all nodes where a ϕ-function needs to be placed, if a definition of a variable appears in n . The merge sets of a CFG can be computed using DJ-graphs without prior knowledge of how the variables are used and defined. Later, we can answer the liveness query (as a part of other optimization or analysis phase) by utilizing the knowledge of the use/def of variables, the dominator tree and the pre-computed merge sets. On average, merge sets have been shown to be of size comparable to the Dominance Frontier(DF) set of a CFG and can be computed efficiently for all kinds of applications consisting of both reducible and irreducible loops. This is an advantage over existing algorithms which require additional complexities while handling applications using irreducible loops. For cases where the merge sets have already been created during the SSA construction step, the cost of our algorithm reduces even further when we use these merge sets for liveness computation. We have compared our new algorithm with a recent algorithm for computing liveness based on SSA form, and show how it performs better in practice, though being simpler to understand and implement. | 2011 | Efficient Spilling Reduction for Software Pipelined Loops in Presence of Multiple Register Types in Embedded VLIW ProcessorsabstractIntegrating register allocation and software pipelining of loops is an active research area. We focus on techniques that precondition the dependence graph before software pipelining in order to ensure that no register spill instructions are inserted by the register allocator in the software pipelined loop. If spilling is not necessary for the input code, preconditioning techniques insert dependence arcs so that the maximum register pressure MAXLIVE achieved by any loop schedule is below the number of available registers, without hurting the initiation interval if possible. When a solution exists, a spill-free software pipeline is guaranteed to exist. Existing preconditioning techniques consider one register type (register class) at a time [Deschinkel and Touati 2008]. In this article, we extend preconditioning techniques so that multiple register types are considered simultaneously. First, we generalize the existing theory of register pressure minimization for cyclic scheduling. Second, we implement our method inside the production compiler of the ST2xx VLIW family, and we demonstrate its efficiency on industry benchmarks (FFMPEG, MEDIABENCH, SPEC2000, SPEC2006). We demonstrate a high spill reduction rate without a significant initiation interval loss. Sid Ahmed Ali Touati, Frederic Brault, Karine Deschinkel, Benoît Dupont de Dinechin |

| 2009 | Revisiting Out-of-SSA Translation for Correctness, Code Quality and EfficiencyabstractStatic single assignment (SSA) form is an intermediate program representation in which many code optimizations can be performed with fast and easy-to-implement algorithms. However, some of these optimizations create situations where the SSA variables arising from the same original variable now have overlapping live ranges. This complicates the translation out of SSA code into standard code. There are three issues to consider: correctness, code quality (elimination of copies), and algorithm efficiency (speed and memory footprint). Briggs et al. proposed patches to correct the initial approach of Cytron et al. A cleaner and more general approach was proposed by Sreedhar et al., along with techniques to reduce the number of generated copies. We propose a new approach based on coalescing and a precise view of interferences, in which correctness and optimizations are separated. Our approach is provably correct and simpler to implement, with no patches or particular cases as in previous solutions, while reducing the number of generated copies. Also, experiments with SPEC CINT2000 show that it is 2x faster and 10x less memory-consuming than the Method III of Sreedhar et al., which makes it suitable for just-in-time compilation. | 2008 | Fast liveness checking for ssa-form programsabstractLiveness analysis is an important analysis in optimizing compilers. Liveness information is used in several optimizations and is mandatory during the code-generation phase. Two drawbacks of conventional liveness analyses are that their computations are fairly expensive and their results are easily invalidated by program transformations. We present a method to check liveness of variables that overcomes both obstacles. The major advantage of the proposed method is that the analysis result survives all program transformations except for changes in the control-flow graph. For common program sizes our technique is faster and consumes less memory than conventional data-flow approaches. Thereby, we heavily make use of SSA-form properties, which allow us to completely circumvent data-flow equation solving. We evaluate the competitiveness of our approach in an industrial strength compiler. Our measurements use the integer part of the SPEC2000 benchmarks and investigate the liveness analysis used by the SSA destruction pass. We compare the net time spent in liveness computations of our implementation against the one provided by that compiler. The results show that in the vast majority of cases our algorithm, while providing the same quality of information, needs less time: an average speed-up of 16%. | 1991 | A ultra fast Euclidean division algorithm for prime memory systemsabstractIn this paper, we describe a general method which is suitable for ejjicient hardware implementation of euclidean division by numbers of the form 2n & 1.This method relies on the properties of two's complement binay arithmetic to perform simultaneous computations of the quotient and the remainder of a q-bit number in Pogz([q + n~)l i-1 addition steps.Because it is restn"cted to 2 + 1 numbers, on which it operates one order of magnitude faster than the previously known constant division algorithms, our method appears to be better suited for implementation in super-computer and image processing memory systems.Specifically, it oflers a viable alternative to the simple low-order interleaving in multi-bank memory de-Sagn,as several non-linear skewing schemes no longer involve the speed nor the costs penalties that used to be associated with them. Moreover, since numbers of the form 2n&l include 3,5,7,17,31, 127,257.. .which are ail primes, implementations of the related pn'me memory systems turn out to be affordable as well.
