| 2025 | Rakis: Secure Fast I/O Primitives Across Trust Boundaries on Intel SGXabstractThe use of Intel® Software Guard Extensions (SGX) offers robust security measures for shielding applications in untrusted environments. However, the performance overhead experienced by IO-intensive applications within SGX limits widespread adoption. Prior approaches have proposed the use of userspace kernel-bypass libraries such as Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) inside SGX enclaves to enable direct access to IO devices. However, these solutions often come at the cost of increasing the Trusted Computing Base (TCB) size, expanding the attack surface, and complicating deployment. In this paper, we introduce Rakis, a comprehensive system that securely enables SGX enclave programs to leverage fast IO Linux kernel primitives without modifying user applications. Rakis prioritizes the security of its TCB components by employing rigorous software testing and verification methods, embodying a security-by-design approach. Importantly, Rakis achieves performance advantages without sacrificing TCB size or introducing deployment intricacies and demonstrates significant improvements in benchmark tests with a 4.6x increase in UDP network throughput compared to state-of-the-art SGX enclave LibOS (Gramine-SGX). To demonstrate the practical applicability of Rakis, we evaluate its performance on four real-world programs showcasing an average performance improvement of 2.8x compared to Gramine-SGX across all workloads. | 2025 | Pegasus: Transparent and Unified Kernel-Bypass Networking for Fast Local and Remote CommunicationabstractModern software architectures in cloud computing are highly reliant on interconnected local and remote services. Popular architectures, such as the service mesh, rely on the use of independent services or sidecars for a single application. While such modular approaches simplify application development and deployment, they also introduce significant communication overhead since now even local communication that is handled by the kernel becomes a performance bottleneck. This problem has been identified and partially solved for remote communication over fast NICs through the use of kernel-bypass data plane systems. However, existing kernel-bypass mechanisms challenge their practical deployment by either requiring code modification or supporting only a small subset of the network interface. | 2025 | Erebor: A Drop-In Sandbox Solution for Private Data Processing in Untrusted Confidential Virtual MachinesabstractConfidential virtual machines (CVMs) are designed to protect data in cloud machines, but they fail in this task in common Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) cloud environments. In such settings, the software stack within a CVM, including service programs and the operating system, that receives and processes data may intentionally disclose it to attackers. We present Erebor, a sandboxing architecture for CVMs that processes client data in secure containers, where restrictions apply to both (a) access by all untrusted outside components and (b) the sandbox's ability to communicate data through memory and software-controlled direct or covert exits. Erebor enables such restrictions through a security monitor design based on intra-kernel privilege isolation for CVM, fully compatible with emerging cloud deployments without requiring host modifications. Under realistic scenarios, such as large language model inference and private information retrieval, Erebor only adds a performance overhead of 4.5%-13.2%, demonstrating its practicality in terms of enabling strong data sandboxing in modern cloud machines. | 2025 | Adaptive and Efficient Dynamic Memory Management for Hardware EnclavesabstractThe second version of Intel® Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX), or SGX2, adds dynamic management of enclave memory and threads. The first version required the address space and thread counts to be fixed before execution. The Enclave Dynamic Memory Management (EDMM) feature of SGX2 has the potential to lower launch times and overall execution time. Despite reducing the enclave loading time by 28-93%, straightforward EDMM adoption strategies actually slow execution time down by as much as 58%. | 2024 | Gramine-TDX: A Lightweight OS Kernel for Confidential VMsabstractWhile Confidential Virtual Machines (CVMs) have emerged as a prominent way for hardware-assisted confidential computing, their primary usage is not suitable for small, specialized, security-critical workloads, i.e., legacy VMs with their conventional OS distributions result in a large trusted computing base. | 2023 | μSwitch: Fast Kernel Context Isolation with Implicit Context SwitchesabstractIsolating application components is crucial to limit the exposure of sensitive data and code to vulnerabilities in the untrusted components. Process-based isolation is the de facto isolation used in practice, e.g., web browsers. However, it incurs significant performance overhead and is typically infeasible when frequent switches between isolation domains are expected. To address this problem, many intra-process memory isolation techniques have been proposed using novel kernel abstractions, recent CPU extensions (e.g., Intel®MPK), and software-based fault isolation (e.g., WebAssembly). However, these techniques insufficiently isolate kernel resources, such as file descriptors, or do so by incurring high overheads when resources are accessed. Other work virtualizes the kernel context inside a privileged user space domain, but this is ad-hoc, error-prone, and provides only limited kernel functionalities. We propose μSwitch, an efficient kernel context isolation mechanism with memory protection that addresses these limitations. We use a protected structure, shared by the kernel and the user space, for context switching and propose implicit context switching to improve its performance by deferring the kernel resource switch to the next system call. We apply μSWITCH to isolate libraries in the Firefox web browser and an HTTP server, and reduce the overhead of isolation by 32.7% to 98.4% compared with other isolation techniques. | 2022 | Cerberus: A Formal Approach to Secure and Efficient Enclave Memory SharingabstractHardware enclaves rely on a disjoint memory model, which maps each physical address to an enclave to achieve strong memory isolation. However, this severely limits the performance and programmability of enclave programs. While some prior work proposes enclave memory sharing, it does not provide a formal model or verification of their designs. This paper presents Cerberus, a formal approach to secure and efficient enclave memory sharing. To reduce the burden of formal verification, we compare different sharing models and choose a simple yet powerful sharing model. Based on the sharing model, Cerberus extends an enclave platform such that enclave memory can be made immutable and shareable across multiple enclaves via additional operations. We use incremental verification starting with an existing formal model called the Trusted Abstract Platform (TAP). Using our extended TAP model, we formally verify that Cerberus does not break or weaken the security guarantees of the enclaves despite allowing memory sharing. More specifically, we prove the Secure Remote Execution (SRE) property on our formal model. Finally, the paper shows the feasibility of Cerberus by implementing it in an existing enclave platform, RISC-V Keystone. | 2011 | Improved device driver reliability through hardware verification reuseabstractFaulty device drivers are a major source of operating system failures. We argue that the underlying cause of many driver faults is the separation of two highly-related tasks: device verification and driver development. These two tasks have a lot in common, and result in software that is conceptually and functionally similar, yet kept totally separate. The result is a particularly bad case of duplication of effort: the verification code is correct, but is discarded after the device has been manufactured; the driver code is inferior, but used in actual device operation. We claim that the two tasks, and the software they produce, can and should be unified, and this will result in drastic improvement of device-driver quality and reduction in the development cost and time to market.
