| 2025 | TC-LLaVA: Rethinking the Transfer of LLava from Image to Video Understanding with Temporal ConsiderationsabstractMultimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have significantly improved performance across various image-language applications. Recently, there has been a growing interest in adapting image pre-trained MLLMs for video-related tasks. However, most efforts concentrate on enhancing the vision encoder and projector components, while the core part, Large Language Models (LLMs), remains comparatively under-explored. In this paper, we propose two strategies to enhance the model's capability in video understanding tasks by improving inter-layer attention computation in LLMs. Specifically, the first approach focuses on the enhancement of Rotary Position Embedding (RoPE) with Temporal-Aware Dual RoPE, which introduces temporal position information to strengthen the MLLM's temporal modeling capabilities while preserving the relative position relationships of both visual and text tokens. The second approach involves enhancing the Attention Mask with the Frame-wise Block Causal Attention Mask, a simple yet effective method that broadens visual token interactions within and across video frames while maintaining the causal inference mechanism. Based on these proposed methods, we adapt LLaVA for video understanding tasks, naming it Temporal-Considered LLaVA (TC-LLaVA). Our TC-LLaVA achieves new state-of-the-art performance across various video understanding benchmarks with only supervised fine-tuning (SFT) on video-related datasets. | 2025 | VTG-LLM: Integrating Timestamp Knowledge into Video LLMs for Enhanced Video Temporal GroundingabstractVideo Temporal Grounding (VTG) strives to accurately pinpoint event timestamps in a specific video using linguistic queries, significantly impacting downstream tasks like video browsing and editing. Unlike traditional task-specific models, Video Large Language Models (video LLMs) can handle multiple tasks concurrently in a zero-shot manner. Consequently, exploring the application of video LLMs for VTG tasks has become a burgeoning research area. However, despite considerable advancements in video content understanding, video LLMs often struggle to accurately pinpoint timestamps within videos, limiting their effectiveness in VTG tasks. To address this, we introduce VTG-LLM, a model designed to enhance video LLMs' timestamp localization abilities. Our approach includes: (1) effectively integrating timestamp knowledge into visual tokens; (2) incorporating absolute-time tokens to manage timestamp knowledge without concept shifts; and (3) introducing a lightweight, high-performance, slot-based token compression technique designed to accommodate the demands of a large number of frames to be sampled for VTG tasks. Additionally, we present VTG-IT-120K, a collection of publicly available VTG datasets that we have re-annotated to improve upon low-quality annotations. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate the superior performance of VTG-LLM in comparison to other video LLM methods across a variety of VTG tasks. | 2024 | Configurable Customized Information Extraction and Processing PipelineabstractExtracting information from scanned business documents, while a necessary commercial task, continues to be mostly done manually, requiring significant human effort. Current solutions for automated document information extraction still have limited capabilities in regards to user-required customizability and extraction of dataset-specific information, leaving the area as a very active field of research. In this paper, we propose modifications and improvements to our previously developed custom pipeline for extracting and tabulating key-value pairs from commercial invoice documents. Our design changes and additions adapt the pipeline to a wider variety of document types and use cases, primarily through the implementation of dataset-specific configuration files that promote customizability along with new technical modules that address both general and dataset-specific complexities. We compare our pipeline’s performance against current machine learning and commercial solutions on a real-world dataset, and demonstrate that it is able to extract a wider variety of fields while maintaining competitive or greater accuracies compared to the alternate solutions. | 2023 | Visual Analytics of the Effect of Age on the Spatial Learning Capabilities of Sleep-Deprived DrosophilaabstractThe objective of this research was to test, analyze, and visualize the effects of sleep deprivation and aging on performance. The present study aimed to determine how age affects the impact of sleep deprivation on the spatial learning capabilities of Drosophila (the fruit fly). It was hypothesized that older age increases the detrimental effect on performance after a night of sleep deprivation. To test for spatial learning, Drosophila were separated by age and sleep deprivation status and subjected to a series of trials in a spatial learning assay. A statistically significant decrease was found from the learning of control to sleep-deprived old flies and from the learning of young to old sleep-deprived flies. Importantly, the negative impact of sleep deprivation on the learning of young flies was also significantly lower than that of old flies. The results supported the research hypothesis, suggesting that the learning performance of older flies is more vulnerable to sleep deprivation than that of younger flies. The conclusions of this study provide potential for future research in this field to be performed using more controlled methods. A better understanding of the relationship between sleep, aging, learning, and their influencing factors via Drosophila studies could eventually translate to a more thorough knowledge of human sleep and aging. | 2022 | Life after BERT: What do Other Muppets Understand about Language?abstractExisting pre-trained transformer analysis works usually focus only on one or two model families at a time, overlooking the variability of the architecture and pre-training objectives. In our work, we utilize the oLMpics benchmark and psycholinguistic probing datasets for a diverse set of 29 models including T5, BART, and ALBERT.Additionally, we adapt the oLMpics zero-shot setup for autoregressive models and evaluate GPT networks of different sizes. Our findings show that none of these models can resolve compositional questions in a zero-shot fashion, suggesting that this skill is not learnable using existing pre-training objectives.Furthermore, we find that global model decisions such as architecture, directionality, size of the dataset, and pre-training objective are not predictive of a model's linguistic capabilities. The code for this study is available on GitHub 1 . | 2021 | Natural Adversarial ExamplesabstractWe introduce two challenging datasets that reliably cause machine learning model performance to substantially degrade. The datasets are collected with a simple adversarial filtration technique to create datasets with limited spurious cues. Our datasets’ real-world, unmodified examples transfer to various unseen models reliably, demonstrating that computer vision models have shared weaknesses. The first dataset is called IMAGENET-A and is like the ImageNet test set, but it is far more challenging for existing models. We also curate an adversarial out-of-distribution detection dataset called IMAGENET-O, which is the first out-of-distribution detection dataset created for ImageNet models. On IMAGENET-A a DenseNet-121 obtains around 2% accuracy, an accuracy drop of approximately 90%, and its out-of-distribution detection performance on IMAGENET-O is near random chance levels. We find that existing data augmentation techniques hardly boost performance, and using other public training datasets provides improvements that are limited. However, we find that improvements to computer vision architectures provide a promising path towards robust models. Dan Hendrycks, Kevin Zhao, Steven Basart, Jacob Steinhardt, Dawn Song |
