2007 Detection of Wipes and Digital Video Effects Based on a Pattern-Independent Model of Image Boundary Line Characteristics
abstract
This paper proposes detection of wipes and digital video effects (DVEs) in a video sequence based on a new pattern-independent model. This model is based on the characteristics of image boundary lines dividing the two image regions in the transitional frames. Wipes and DVEs are modeled as frame sequences where either (A) a single boundary line moves continuously in a time sequence, or (B) multiple boundary lines form a quadrilateral within a frame. The model is applied to the image boundary lines extracted from a video sequence to detect wipes and DVEs. An evaluation using news programs containing various patterns of wipes and DVEs shows that the proposed method achieves recall of 91.5 % and precision of 60.7 %, improving the conventional twin-comparison method by 29.6 % in recall and 46.5 % in precision.

2006 Segmented-Region Based Approach Using Object Components Database to Detect Sky Region
abstract
In this paper, we propose a new approach to sky region detection. It enables robust detection for cloudy sky regions by evaluating similarity of visual features between combinations of segmented regions in an input image and sky region components stored in a database. To reduce the matching cost for the detection, the proposed approach adopts a combination search. It eliminates non-sky regions from the segmented regions by matching with sky region components in the database, and then restricts the number of segmented regions to be combined to that of the sky region components of the corresponding sky region in the database. A false detection-false rejection curve shows that 18% of the equal error rate is achieved for 300 nature images. The maximum reduction rate of matching cost is 1/50 using a database with 369 sky regions.

2004 Video material archive system for efficient video editing based on media identification
abstract
This paper proposes a new media identification related application; a video material archive system for efficient video editing. This system allows content creators to track the usage history of all the archived materials to support their access to the desired materials. It also provides the citation frequency of each material so that creators can measure its importance. A feature-based media identification method is employed to create the usage history and the citation frequency data. Experimental results show that the use of this identification method makes it possible to create those data fully automatically without forcing any changes to the existing devices.

1997 SEMCOG: An Object-based Image Retrieval System and Its Visual Query Interface
abstract
2 SEMCOG Approach We argue that image retrieval based on either approach alone is not sufficient in terms of modeling and query specification flexibility y. We also argue that a visual query interface which is capability of visualizing target images is essential. SEMCOG[l] (SEMantics and COGnitionbased image retrieval) aims at integrating semautics and cognition-based approaches to give users a greater flexibility to pose queries. SEMCOG’S image matching is based on objects in the images rather than the whole images. In SEMCOG, a query “Retrieve all images in which there is a man to the right of a car and the man looks like this image” can be posed using combinations of semantics and visual expressions. The queries are posed in the way of specifying image objects and their layouts using a visual query interface, IFQ (In Frame Query), rather than complicated multimedia database query languages. The user’s query can be simplified as a mental model shown at the top of Figure 1. She then specifies her mental model using IFQ using combinations of visual examples or semantics. IFQ window shows a query “Retrieve

1996 Hypermedia Database "Himotoki" and Its Applications
abstract
Describes the design concept of a hypermedia database called "Himotoki" and its navigational capabilities. A hypermedia database is a system that integrates hypermedia operations with database models. Its advantages are: (a) its structured design can improve authoring and browsing capabilities for large hypermedia applications, (b) nodes and links can be automatically generated under certain conditions, (c) a navigational data interface for DBMS is obtained, etc. To provide cost-effective operations for hypermedia databases, we introduce set-to-set linking and navigational functions, viz. media-based navigation, schema navigation and moving hot-spot navigation. These functional capabilities make the media contents well-organized, so as to improve the human-machine interactive interface. Implemented applications such as "Electronic Aquatic Life" and "Hypermedia Museum" demonstrate the usefulness of Himotoki's navigational functions and the customizability of its architectural design.

1992 A sketch retrieval method for full color image database-query by visual example
abstract
Gives a basic idea and its fundamental algorithms of the visual interface for image database systems. The QVE (Query by Visual Example) accepts a sketch roughly drawn by a user to retrieve the original image and the similar images. The system evaluates the similarity between the rough sketch, i.e. a visual example, and each of the image data in the database automatically. The QVE interface is implemented and examined on an experimental electronic art gallery called ART MUSEUM. This paper also gives some experimental results and a current evaluation. The algorithms are quite effective for content based image retrieval.>
