| 2026 | Chimera: Transparent and High-Performance ISAX Heterogeneous Computing via Binary RewritingabstractISAX heterogeneous processors integrate cores that share a common base ISA, with certain cores offering extension ISAs (e.g., vector extension) to accelerate computation. ISAX balances performance and energy efficiency while facilitating the reuse of existing software ecosystems. RISC-V, which adopts the ISAX architecture, has gained extensive attention in both industry and academia. Binary translation via binary rewriting enables transparent ISAX heterogeneous computing by translating extension instructions when migrating a program to cores without extension support. However, current binary rewriting methods still struggle to achieve both high performance and correctness. Jiatai He, Qinglin Pan, Ruilin Zhao, Ji Qi 0002, Kaiwen Liang, Yuexiang Wang, Jiageng Yu |

| 2025 | ECStore: Achieving Efficient and Compressible Indexing on Outsourced Encrypted DatabasesabstractEncrypted Databases (EDBs) are essential for protecting sensitive data outsourced to public clouds, enabling diverse index-based queries over encrypted data. However, existing EDB indexes often incur high storage overhead and performance degradation, primarily due to the poor compressibility of pseudorandom encrypted values, which leads to frequent accesses to slower persistent storage as indexes outgrow main memory. We introduceECStore, the first EDB that supports compressible and efficient indexing. Observing that EDB indexes are used solely for lookups and never decrypted, we designECTree, a cryptographic hash-based index structure in which each node is a compressible bit-string identifier that conceals plaintext keys.ECTreeenables logarithmic-time encrypted search via a novel membership testing mechanism. To address false positives arising in dynamic workloads, we introduceDirected View Check(DVC), which detects inaccuracies and avoids redundant traversals. Additionally,ECTree's Merkle-tree-like structure supports encrypted query authentication, resisting server compromise. Extensive evaluations show thatECStorecan achieve up to 94.7% lower latency and 10.5x higher throughput on popular benchmarks compared to notable EDBs. | 2025 | Chorus: Robust Multitasking Local Client-Server Collaborative Inference With Wi-Fi 6 for AIoT Against Stochastic Congestion DelayabstractThe rapid growth of AIoT devices brings huge demands for DNNs deployed on resource-constrained devices. However, the intensive computation and high memory footprint of DNN inference make it difficult for the AIoT devices to execute the inference tasks efficiently. In many widely deployed AIoT use cases, multiple local AIoT devices launch DNN inference tasks randomly. Although local collaborative inference has been proposed to accelerate DNN inference on local devices with limited resources, multitasking local collaborative inference, which is common in AIoT scenarios, has not been fully studied in previous works. We consider multitasking local client-server collaborative inference (MLCCI), which achieves efficient DNN inference by offloading the inference tasks from multiple AIoT devices to a more powerful local server with parallel pipelined execution streams through Wi-Fi 6. Our optimization goal is to minimize the mean end-to-end latency of MLCCI. Based on the experiment results, we identify three key challenges: high communication costs, high model initialization latency, and congestion delay brought by task interference. We analyze congestion delay in MLCCI and its stochastic fluctuations with queuing theory and propose Chorus, a high-performance adaptive MLCCI framework for AIoT devices, to minimize the mean end-to-end latency of MLCCI against stochastic congestion delay. Chorus generates communication-efficient model partitions with heuristic search, uses a prefetch-enabled two-level LRU cache to accelerate model initialization on the server, reduces congestion delay and its short-term fluctuations with execution stream allocation based on the cross-entropy method, and finally achieves efficient computation offloading with reinforcement learning. We established a system prototype, which statistically simulated many virtual clients with limited physical client devices to conduct performance evaluations, for Chorus with real devices. The evaluation results for various workload levels show that Chorus achieved an average of$1.4\times$,$1.3\times$, and$2\times$speedup over client-only inference, and server-only inference with LRU and MLSH, respectively. | 2025 | Slarm: SLA-Aware, Reliable and Efficient Transaction Dissemination for Permissioned BlockchainsabstractThe blockchain paradigm has attracted diverse applications to be deployed upon. However, no service-level agreement (SLA) mechanism has been proposed to enforce the SLA disseminating deadlines to commit blockchain transactions, although these transactions are often interactively submitted by clients and desire short SLA deadlines (e.g., tens of seconds). Existing peer-to-peer (P2P) multicast protocols for blockchains take the unidirectional approach to disseminate transactions regardless of their SLA deadlines, making transactions easily violate their deadlines. Moreover, these protocols are vulnerable to malicious P2P nodes, and their protocol messages (e.g., SLAstringent transactions) are vulnerable to deferring attacks. We propose SLARM, the first bidirectional P2P multicast protocol for permissioned blockchains, which conservatively adjusts transactions' dissemination speed to satisfy their SLA deadlines according to the trustworthy SLA feedback of previously disseminated transactions. SLARM guarantees transactions' SLAs in a decentralized way and defends against the deferring attacks using TEE. Evaluation of SLARM with five notable P2P multicast protocols and five diverse real-world applications shows that: even with transaction spikes and attacked nodes, SLARM achieves a much higher transaction SLA satisfaction rate with reasonably high commit throughput. | 2024 | Privacy-preserving Compression for Efficient Collaborative InferenceabstractCollaborative inference accelerates DNN inference tasks of resource-limited devices (e.g., clients) by offloading model slices to resource-rich devices (e.g., servers). During the inference procedure, outputs of model slices are transmitted among devices, causing significant intermediate data transmission overhead and posing a risk of privacy leakage of the client’s input data. Quantization has been widely used in collaborative inference to enhance communication efficiency. However, traditional quantization cannot prevent data privacy leaks. Besides, perturbation-based privacy protection methods, such as adding Laplace noise to the intermediate data of collaborative inference, do not consider communication efficiency. In this paper, we introduce Layered Laplace Random Quantization to simultaneously achieve communication efficiency and data privacy protection in collaborative inference by compressing the intermediate data with Laplace quantization noise. We also propose stability training to recover the accuracy loss caused by our method. Evaluation results show that our method achieved an average inference latency speedup of 1.2x-1.3x for different DNN models compared with the baseline methods while achieving comparable data privacy protection and recoverable accuracy loss. | 2024 | Hyper: A High-Performance and Memory-Efficient Learned Index via Hybrid ConstructionabstractLearned indexes use machine learning techniques to improve index construction. However, they often face a fundamental trade-off between performance and memory consumption, especially in dynamic environments with frequent insert and delete operations. This trade-off stems from the construction approaches used in learned indexes: The top-down approach increases performance at the cost of significant memory overhead, while the bottom-up approach focuses on memory efficiency but introduces performance issues due to prediction errors. % A unified solution that simultaneously optimizes performance and memory consumption in dynamic data management scenarios is therefore highly desirable. We propose Hyper, a highly efficient learned index with a novel two-phase hybrid construction approach. Our approach combines bottom-up construction for leaf nodes with top-down construction for inner nodes to achieve an optimal balance between performance and memory consumption. Hyper effectively handles concurrent writes and structure adjustments without sacrificing query performance. We evaluated Hyper on both simple and complex real-world datasets and compared it to seven state-of-the-art learned indexes and several traditional data structures for dynamic workloads. The evaluation results show that Hyper achieves a remarkable performance boost of up to 3.75× with significantly reduced index memory consumption of up to 1610× in the single-thread evaluation. In high concurrency scenarios, Hyper even achieves improvements up to 5.73×, 3.72×, and 3.99× in read-only, read-write, and write-only workloads. | 2024 | D-Linker: Debloating Shared Libraries by Relinking From Object FilesabstractShared libraries are widely used in software development to execute third-party functions. However, the size and complexity of shared libraries tend to increase with the need to support more features, resulting in bloated shared libraries. This leads to resource waste and security issues as a significant amount of generic functionality is included unnecessarily in most scenarios, especially in embedded systems. To address this issue, previous works attempt to debloat shared libraries through binary rewriting or recompilation. However, these works face a tradeoff between flexibility in usage (needs recompilation and runtime support) and the effectiveness of debloating (binary rewriting achieves insufficient file size reduction). We propose D-Linker, a tool that debloats shared libraries by reducing both code and data sections in link-time at the object level without recompilation. Our key insight is that object-level shared library debloating is especially suitable for embedded systems because it strikes a balance of flexibility and efficiency. D-Linker identifies the required ELF object files of the shared libraries in an application and relinks them to produce a debloated shared library with better-debloating effectiveness by avoiding the data reference analysis. Our approach achieves over 70% of gadgets reduction as a security benefit and an average size reduction of 49.6% for a stripped libc of coreutils. The results also indicate that D-Linker improves debloating effectiveness by approximately 30% compared to binary-level shared library debloating and incurs a 5% decrease in code gadgets reduction compared to source-code-level shared library debloating. | 2023 | Enhancing Coverage-Guided Fuzzing via Phantom ProgramabstractFor coverage-guided fuzzers, many of their adopted seeds are usually underused by exploring limited program states since essentially all their executions have to abide by rigorous program dependencies while only limited seeds are capable of accessing dependencies. Moreover, even when iteratively executing such limited seeds, the fuzzers have to repeatedly access the covered program states before uncovering new states. Such facts indicate that exploration power on program states of seeds has not been sufficiently leveraged by the existing coverage-guided fuzzing strategies. To tackle these issues, we propose a coverage-guided fuzzer, namely MirageFuzz, to mitigate the program dependencies when executing seeds for enhancing their exploration power on program states. Specifically, MirageFuzz first creates a “phantom” program of the target program by reducing its program dependencies corresponding to conditional statements while retaining their original semantics. Accordingly, MirageFuzz performs dual fuzzing, i.e., the source fuzzing to fuzz the original program and the phantom fuzzing to fuzz the phantom program simultaneously. Then, MirageFuzz applies the taint-based mutation mechanism to generate a new seed by updating the target conditional statement of a given seed from the source fuzzing with the corresponding condition value derived by the phantom fuzzing. To evaluate the effectiveness of MirageFuzz, we build a benchmark suite with 18 projects commonly adopted by recent fuzzing papers, and select seven open-source fuzzers as baselines for performance comparison with MirageFuzz. The experiment results suggest that MirageFuzz outperforms our baseline fuzzers from 13.42% to 77.96% averagely. Furthermore, MirageFuzz exposes 29 previously unknown bugs where 4 of them have been confirmed and 3 have been fixed by the corresponding developers. | 2023 | A Geography-Based P2P Overlay Network for Fast and Robust Blockchain SystemsabstractNumerous blockchain systems with various consensus protocols have emerged to achieve high transaction rates (2$\sim$10K tps). However, their underlying P2P network primitives constrain further improvements due to two problems (i) high message redundancy and (ii) long broadcast convergence time. The first problem is caused by the excessive robustness of the dominant broadcast approach Gossip. All state-of-the-art blockchain systems only tolerate 20-50% node failure while Gossip can withstand up to 90%. The reason for (ii) is that existing broadcast topologies ignore geographical distances among nodes and incur paths with unnecessarily high latency. We presentFRing, a geography-based P2P overlay network for fast and robust broadcast in blockchain systems.FRinghas three main features: sufficient robustness, low message redundancy, and fast convergence. To reduce convergence time,FRingforms the network topology by considering geographical proximity. A novel broadcast algorithm based onFRingtopology is proposed to lower message redundancy while maintaining sufficient robustness. One major challenge is to eliminate the risk of topology inference by traffic pattern analysis.FRingleverages Intel SGX to guarantee nodes’ behavior integrity and incorporates pattern obfuscation to prevent traffic pattern analysis. The evaluation shows thatFRingimproved the throughput of EOS by 220% and Hyperledger Fabric by 210%. Haoran Qiu, Shixiong Zhao, Xusheng Chen, Ji Qi 0002, Heming Cui, Sen Wang 0004 |

| 2022 | CRONUS: Fault-isolated, Secure and High-performance Heterogeneous Computing for Trusted Execution EnvironmentabstractWith the trend of processing a large volume of sensitive data on PaaS services (e.g., DNN training), a TEE architecture that supports general heterogeneous accelerators, enables spatial sharing on one accelerator, and enforces strong isolation across accelerators is highly desirable. However, none of the existing TEE solutions meet all three requirements. In this paper, we propose CRONUS, the first TEE architecture that achieves the three crucial requirements. The key idea of CRONUS is to partition heterogeneous computation into isolated TEE enclaves, where each enclave encapsulates only one kind of computation (e.g., GPU computation), and multiple enclaves can spatially share an accelerator. Then, CRONUS constructs heterogeneous computing using remote procedure calls (RPCs) among enclaves. With CRONUS, each accelerator’s hardware and its software stack are strongly isolated from others’, and each enclave trusts only its own hardware. To tackle the security challenge caused by inter-enclave interactions, we design a new streaming remote procedure call abstraction to enable secure RPCs with high performance. CRONUS is software-based, making it general to diverse accelerators. We implemented CRONUS on ARM TrustZone. Evaluation on diverse workloads with CPUs, GPUs and NPUs shows that, CRONUS achieves less than 7.1% extra computation time compared to native (unprotected) executions. | 2022 | DAENet: Making Strong Anonymity Scale in a Fully Decentralized NetworkabstractTraditional anonymous networks (e.g., Tor) are vulnerable to traffic analysis attacks that monitor the whole network traffic to determine which users are communicating. To preserve user anonymity against traffic analysis attacks, the emerging mix networks mess up the order of packets through a set of centralized and explicit shuffling nodes. However, this centralized design of mix networks is insecure against targeted DoS attacks that can completely block these shuffling nodes. In this article, we presentDAENet, an efficient mix network that resists both targeted DoS attacks and traffic analysis attacks with a new abstraction calledStealthy Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Network. Thestealthy P2P networkeffectively hides the shuffling nodes used in a routing path into the whole network, such that adversaries cannot distinguish specific shuffling nodes and conduct targeted DoS attacks to block these nodes. In addition, to handle traffic analysis attacks, we leverage the confidentiality and integrity protection of Intel SGX to ensure trustworthy packet shuffles at each distributed host and use multiple routing paths to prevent adversaries from tracking and revealing user identities. We show that our system is scalable with moderate latency (2.2s) when running in a cluster of 10,000 participants and is robust in the case of machine failures, making it an attractive new design for decentralized anonymous communication. | 2021 | Bidl: A High-throughput, Low-latency Permissioned Blockchain Framework for Datacenter NetworksabstractA permissioned blockchain framework typically runs an efficient Byzantine consensus protocol and is attractive to deploy fast trading applications among a large number of mutually untrusted participants (e.g., companies). Unfortunately, all existing permissioned blockchain frameworks adopt sequential workflows for invoking the consensus protocol and executing applications' transactions, making the performance of these applications much lower than deploying them in traditional systems (e.g., in-datacenter stock exchange). | 2020 | UPA: An Automated, Accurate and Efficient Differentially Private Big-Data Mining SystemabstractIn the era of big-data, individuals and institutions store their sensitive data on clouds, and these data are often analyzed and computed by MapReduce frameworks (e.g., Spark). However, releasing the computation result on these data may leak privacy. Differential Privacy (DP) is a powerful method to preserve the privacy of an individual data record from a computation result. Given an input dataset and a query, DP typically perturbs an output value with noise proportional to sensitivity, the greatest change on an output value when a record is added to or removed from the input dataset. Unfortunately, directly computing the sensitivity value for a query and an input dataset is computationally infeasible, because it requires adding or removing every record from the dataset and repeatedly running the same query on the dataset: a dataset of one million input records requires running the same query for more than one million times. This paper presents UPA, the first automated, accurate, and efficient sensitivity inferring approach for big-data mining applications. Our key observation is that MapReduce operators often have commutative and associative properties in order to enable parallelism and fault tolerance among computers. Therefore, UPA can greatly reduce the repeated computations at runtime while computing a precise sensitivity value automatically for general big-data queries. We compared UPA with FLEX, the most relevant work that does static analysis on queries to infer sensitivity values. Based on an extensive evaluation on nine diverse Spark queries, UPA supports all the nine evaluated queries, while FLEX supports only five of the nine queries. For the five queries which both UPA and FLEX can support, UPA enforces DP with five orders of magnitude more accurate sensitivity values than FLEX. UPA has reasonable performance overhead compared to native Spark. UPA's source code is available on https://github.com/hku-systems/UPA.
