| 2025 | FastFace: Fast-Converging Scheduler for Large-Scale Face Recognition Training With One GPUabstractComputing power has evolved into a foundational and indispensable resource in the area of deep learning, particularly in tasks such as Face Recognition (FR) model training on large-scale datasets, where multiple GPUs are often a necessity. Recognizing this challenge, some FR methods have started exploring ways to compress the fully-connected layer in FR models. Unlike other approaches, our observations reveal that without prompt scheduling of the learning rate (LR) during FR model training, the loss curve tends to exhibit numerous stationary subsequences. To address this issue, we introduce a novel LR scheduler leveraging Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and Haar Convolutional Kernel (HCK) to eliminate stationary subsequences, resulting in a significant reduction in converging time. However, the proposed scheduler incurs a considerable computational overhead due to its time complexity. To overcome this limitation, we propose FastFace, a fast-converging scheduler with negligible time complexity, i.e.O(1) per iteration, during training. In practice, FastFace is able to accelerate FR model training to a quarter of its original time without sacrificing more than 1% accuracy, making large-scale FR training feasible even with just one single GPU in terms of both time and space complexity. Extensive experiments validate the efficiency and effectiveness of FastFace. The code is publicly available at: https://github.com/amoonfana/FastFace. | 2024 | Attentive and Contrastive Image Manipulation Localization With Boundary GuidanceabstractIn recent years, the rapid advancement of image generation techniques has resulted in the widespread abuse of manipulated images, leading to a crisis of trust and affecting social equity. Thus, the goal of our work is to detect and localize tampered regions in images. Many deep learning based approaches have been proposed to address this problem, but they can hardly handle the tampered regions that are manually fine-tuned to blend into image background. By observing that the boundaries of tempered regions are critical to separating tampered and non-tampered parts, we present a novel boundary-guided approach to image manipulation detection, which introduces an inherent bias towards exploiting the boundary information of tampered regions. Our model follows an encoder-decoder architecture, with multi-scale localization mask prediction, and is guided to utilize the prior boundary knowledge through an attention mechanism and contrastive learning. In particular, our model is unique in that 1) we propose a boundary-aware attention module in the network decoder, which predicts the boundary of tampered regions and thus uses it as crucial contextual cues to facilitate the localization; and 2) we propose a multi-scale contrastive learning scheme with a novel boundary-guided sampling strategy, leading to more discriminative localization features. Our state-of-art performance on several public benchmarks demonstrates the superiority of our model over prior works. | 2022 | Artificial Intelligence for Dunhuang Cultural Heritage Protection: The Project and the DatasetabstractAbstract In this work, we introduce our project on Dunhuang cultural heritage protection using artificial intelligence. The Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in China, also known as the Grottoes of the Thousand Buddhas, is a religious and cultural heritage located on the Silk Road. The grottoes were built from the 4th century to the 14th century. After thousands of years, the in grottoes decaying is serious. In addition, numerous historical records were destroyed throughout the years, making it difficult for archaeologists to reconstruct history. We aim to use modern computer vision and machine learning technologies to solve such challenges. First, we propose to use deep networks to automatically perform the restoration. Through out experiments, we find the automated restoration can provide comparable quality as those manually restored from an archaeologist. This can significantly speed up the restoration given the enormous size of the historical paintings. Second, we propose to use detection and retrieval for further analyzing the tremendously large amount of objects because it is unreasonable to manually label and analyze them. Several state-of-the-art methods are rigorously tested and quantitatively compared in different criteria and categorically. In this work, we created a new dataset, namely, AI for Dunhuang, to facilitate the research. Version v1.0 of the dataset comprises of data and label for the restoration, style transfer, detection, and retrieval. Specifically, the dataset has 10,000 images for restoration, 3455 for style transfer, and 6147 for property retrieval. Lastly, we propose to use style transfer to link and analyze the styles over time, given that the grottoes were build over 1000 years by numerous artists. This enables the possibly to analyze and study the art styles over 1000 years and further enable future researches on cross-era style analysis. We benchmark representative methods and conduct a comparative study on the results for our solution. The dataset will be publicly available along with this paper. | 2021 | Real-time foreground object segmentation networks using long and short skip connectionsabstractForeground object segmentation is an important task with various applications in outdoor surveillance and navigation. Most existing methods focus on accuracy and therefore, are computationally expensive and low in speed, making them difficult to use in actual applications. In this study, we aim to address the issue of accuracy and efficiency trade-off. In particular, in contrast with existing methods that use fine-tuning routine on heavyweight pretrained models and/or optimization techniques to enhance results, we propose a lightweight end-to-end network that can be trained from scratch effectively and efficiently. First, long and short skip connections are used among convolutional blocks and within the bottleneck block. By doing so, information flow within the networks is enhanced during the training stage, and thus, the use rate of parameters in the model is increased, allowing a more compact and efficient network design. Second, we use feature fusions based on element-wise summing before each up-sampling layer to reduce the size of the decoder, accelerate the up-sampling process, and stabilize training convergence. Our proposed method is tested rigorously. In particular, we achieved 1000 times higher speed compared with state-of-the-art methods on CD2014 and SBI2015 datasets with comparable accuracy. | 2016 | A High-Throughput and Multi-Parallel VLSI Architecture for HEVC Deblocking FilterabstractThis paper presents a high-throughput and multi-parallel VLSI hardware architecture for the deblocking filter in the HEVC video coding standard. First, an implementation-friendly and fast boundary judgment method is proposed to avoid using the original recursion loop approach. Then a dedicated parallel VLSI architecture composed of four parallel filtering cores is presented based on the proposed boundary judgment method. With the parallel luma/chroma filtering and parallel vertical/horizontal edges filtering order, the proposed VLSI architecture can process filtering operations for one largest coding unit (LCU) with less filtering cycles than other conventional approaches. Furthermore, filtering efficiency is improved due to a novel ping-pang buffer architecture and the on-chip single-port SRAM with dedicated data arrangement in the memory modules. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed deblocking filter architecture improves the performance by 28-89% at the expense of the slightly increased gate count compared to the previously known architecture in HEVC. The proposed architecture can reach a high operating clock frequency of 278 MHz with TSMC 90 nm library and meet the real time requirement of the deblocking filter for 8 K × 4 K video format at 123 frame/s. | 2015 | A Robust Method for Musical Note RecognitionabstractMusical note recognition plays a fundamental role in the process of the optical music recognition system. In this paper, we propose a robust method for recognizing notes. The method includes three parts: (1) the description of relationships between primitives by introducing the concept of interaction field, (2) the definition of six hierarchical structure features for analyzing notes structures, (3) the workflow of primitive assembly under the guidance of giving priority to key structure features. To evaluate the performance of our method, we present experimental results on real-life scores and comparisons with two commercial products. Experiment show that our method lead to quite good results, especially for complicated scores. Xiaoxiang Liu |

| 2009 | Chaos UWB Radar for Through-the-Wall ImagingabstractIn this paper, we propose to apply a novel chaos-based ultra-wide band (UWB) radar for through-the-wall imaging. The proposed chaos modulation offers superior resolution compared to conventional UWB radars when applied for through-the-wall imaging. A noncoherent receiver is designed based on expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. The theoretical detection performance is derived for through-the-wall detection in the presence and absence of room reverberations as a function of dielectric properties of walls, targets, and their geometry illustrating the robustness of the proposed modulation against room reverberations. The resolution of the proposed modulation is analyzed theoretically and verified through simulations for different wall materials. Numerical electromagnetic simulations using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method are performed to confirm the obtained theoretical results. From the theoretical and simulation analysis, we find that the proposed chaos-based pulse amplitude modulated ultra-wide band (CPAM-UWB) radar has better detection performance, penetrating ability and imaging performance compared to other conventional through-the-wall imaging radars. | 2008 | An intelligent through-the-wall recognition system for homeland securityabstractThe increasing demands for homeland security boost the development of an intelligent recognition system for through-the-wall sensing. A novel intelligent through-the-wall life recognition engine based on support vector machine (SVM) is provided herein. In this system, micro-Doppler signatures detected from through-the-wall radar are extracted and fed into a SVM classifier. Micro-Doppler effect has great potential for life recognition of human activities, nonhuman but vital subjects, and lifeless targets. Due to time-varying non-stationary characteristic of micro-Doppler feature and its high dimensionality, the SVM classifier is found effective in achieving both computation efficiency and accuracy for this application. Simulation results show that high classification performance is achieved using the proposed recognition system. Xiaoxiang Liu, George A. Lampropoulous |

| 2007 | Through the Wall Imaging using Chaotic Modulated Ultra Wideband Synthetic Aperture RadarabstractA novel chaotic modulated ultra wideband (UWB) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging scheme and its post data processing technique are presented for through the wall surveillance applications. It is illustrated that the proposed radar has an excellent resolution performance due to the autocorrelation properties of chaotic signals. Through modeling room reverberation and target reflection, and deriving energy distribution at the receiver, detection performance is carried out to show the advantages of proposed radar. Electromagnetic (EM) simulations are performed in a through the wall scenario. Compared with the conventional UWB radar, the result verifies the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed technique. Xiaoxiang Liu |

| 2002 | A coupled HMM for audio-visual speech recognitionabstractIn recent years several speech recognition systems that use visual together with audio information showed significant increase in performance over the standard speech recognition systems. The use of visual features is justified by both the bimodality of the speech generation and by the need of features that are invariant to acoustic noise perturbation. The audio-visual speech recognition system presented in this paper introduces a novel audio-visual fusion technique that uses a coupled hidden Markov model (HMM). The statistical properties of the coupled-HMM allow us to model the state asynchrony of the audio and visual observations sequences while still preserving their natural correlation over time. The experimental results show that the coupled HMM outperforms the multistream HMM in audio visual speech recognition. Ara V.
