| 2026 | Epileptic Seizure Detection from EEG Signals with Long Short-Term Memory-Transformer and Self-Supervised LearningabstractElectroencephalogram (EEG) plays a vital role in seizure detection, yet existing methods often fail to adequately capture the spatiotemporal characteristics of EEG signals, leading to limited performance. Moreover, most current models depend on supervised learning and thus require large amounts of labeled data. To address these issues, this paper introduces the Long Short-Term Memory-Transformer (LTformer) encoder, designed to model long-term temporal dependencies in EEG signals while retaining spatial information across electrode channels. We further propose a dual-stream self-supervised learning (SSL) strategy to pretrain the model, enabling the LTformer encoder to learn discriminative representations from extensive unlabeled EEG data. After pretext training, the encoder is transferred and fine-tuned for downstream seizure detection. The proposed method, termed Self-Supervised Attention LTformer (SALT), is evaluated on two public EEG datasets using both segment-based and event-based experimental protocols. In the segment-based evaluation, SALT achieves 98.87% sensitivity, 99.15% accuracy, and 99.41% specificity on CHB-MIT, and 98.04% sensitivity, 97.72% accuracy, and 97.62% specificity on Siena. In the event-based evaluation, SALT attains 98.57% sensitivity with a false discovery rate (FDR) of 0.26 on CHB-MIT, and 98.65% sensitivity with an FDR of 0.25 on Siena. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/peutim114/SALT. Tiantian Xiao, Chenxi Nie, Wenqian Feng, Yongfeng Zhang 0001, Yanna Zhao |

| 2025 | Tiny Convolutional Neural Network with Supervised Contrastive Learning for Epileptic Seizure PredictionabstractAutomatic seizure prediction based on ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) ensures the safety of patients with epilepsy and mitigates anxiety. In recent years, significant progress has been made in this field. However, the predictive performance of existing methods encounters a bottleneck that is difficult to overcome. Moreover, there are certain limitations such as significant differences in prediction efficacy among patients or intricate model structures. Given these considerations, Siamese Network (SiaNet) and Triplet Network (TriNet) are proposed based on tiny convolutional neural network and supervised contrastive learning. Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) is first applied to the pre-processed data. Then data tuples are constructed and fed into the networks for training. Both networks try to minimize the interval between samples of the same class while maximize the interval between samples of different classes. The two networks consist of multiple branches with shared weights, which can learn from each other via contrastive learning. Promising results are obtained on the CHB-MIT and Siena datasets, with a total of 35 patients. Meanwhile, both models have only 19.351K parameters. | 2024 | An Efficient Group Federated Learning Framework for Large-Scale EEG-Based Driver Drowsiness DetectionabstractTo avoid traffic accidents, monitoring the driver’s electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to assess drowsiness is an effective solution. However, aggregating the personal data of these drivers may lead to insufficient data usage and pose a risk of privacy breaches. To address these issues, a framework called Group Federated Learning (Group-FL) for large-scale driver drowsiness detection is proposed, which can efficiently utilize diverse client data while protecting privacy. First, by arranging the clients into different levels of groups and gradually aggregating their model parameters from low-level groups to high-level groups, communication and time costs are reduced. In addition, to solve the problem of notable variations in EEG signals among different clients, a global-personalized deep neural network is designed. The global model extracts shared features from various clients, while the personalized model extracts fine-grained features from each client and outputs classification results. Finally, to address special issues such as scale/category imbalance and data pollution, three checking modules are designed for adjusting grouping, evaluating client data, and effectively applying personalized models. Through extensive experimentation, the effectiveness of each component within the framework was validated, and a mean accuracy, F1-score, and Area Under Curve (AUC) of 81.0%, 82.0%, and 87.9% was achieved, respectively, on a publicly available dataset comprising 11 subjects. | 2024 | Seizure Detection Based on Lightweight Inverted Residual Attention NetworkabstractTimely and accurately seizure detection is of great importance for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy patients. Existing seizure detection models are often complex and time-consuming, highlighting the urgent need for lightweight seizure detection. Additionally, existing methods often neglect the key characteristic channels and spatial regions of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. To solve these issues, we propose a lightweight EEG-based seizure detection model named lightweight inverted residual attention network (LRAN). Specifically, we employ a four-stage inverted residual mobile block (iRMB) to effectively extract the hierarchical features from EEG. The convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is introduced to make the model focus on important feature channels and spatial information, thereby enhancing the discrimination of the learned features. Finally, convolution operations are used to capture local information and spatial relationships between features. We conduct intra-subject and inter-subject experiments on a publicly available dataset. Intra-subject experiments obtain 99.25% accuracy in segment-based detection and 0.36/h false detection rate (FDR) in event-based detection, respectively. Inter-subject experiments obtain 84.32% accuracy. Both sets of experiments maintain high classification accuracy with a low number of parameters, where the multiply accumulate operations (MACs) are 25.86[Formula: see text]M and the number of parameters is 0.57[Formula: see text]M. | 2024 | Cross-Subject Seizure Detection via Unsupervised Domain-AdaptationabstractAutomatic seizure detection from Electroencephalography (EEG) is of great importance in aiding the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy due to the advantages of convenience and economy. Existing seizure detection methods are usually patient-specific, the training and testing are carried out on the same patient, limiting their scalability to other patients. To address this issue, we propose a cross-subject seizure detection method via unsupervised domain adaptation. The proposed method aims to obtain seizure specific information through shallow and deep feature alignments. For shallow feature alignment, we use convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract seizure-related features. The distribution gap of the shallow features between different patients is minimized by multi-kernel maximum mean discrepancies (MK-MMD). For deep feature alignment, adversarial learning is utilized. The feature extractor tries to learn feature representations that try to confuse the domain classifier, making the extracted deep features more generalizable to new patients. The performance of our method is evaluated on the CHB-MIT and Siena databases in epoch-based experiments. Additionally, event-based experiments are also conducted on the CHB-MIT dataset. The results validate the feasibility of our method in diminishing the domain disparities among different patients. Shuai Wang 0068, Hailing Feng, Hongbin Lv, Chenxi Nie, Wenqian Feng, Yanna Zhao |

| 2023 | Lightweight Seizure Detection Based on Multi-Scale Channel AttentionabstractEpilepsy is one kind of neurological disease characterized by recurring seizures. Recurrent seizures can cause ongoing negative mental and cognitive damage to the patient. Therefore, timely diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy are crucial for patients. Manual electroencephalography (EEG) signals analysis is time and energy consuming, making automatic detection using EEG signals particularly important. Many deep learning algorithms have thus been proposed to detect seizures. These methods rely on expensive and bulky hardware, which makes them unsuitable for deployment on devices with limited resources due to their high demands on computer resources. In this paper, we propose a novel lightweight neural network for seizure detection using pure convolutions, which is composed of inverted residual structure and multi-scale channel attention mechanism. Compared with other methods, our approach significantly reduces the computational complexity, making it possible to deploy on low-cost portable devices for seizures detection. We conduct experiments on the CHB-MIT dataset and achieves 98.7% accuracy, 98.3% sensitivity and 99.1% specificity with 2.68[Formula: see text]M multiply-accumulate operations (MACs) and only 88[Formula: see text]K parameters. | 2023 | Hybrid Network for Patient-Specific Seizure Prediction from EEG DataabstractSeizure prediction can improve the quality of life for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. With the rapid development of deep learning, lots of seizure prediction methods have been proposed. However, seizure prediction based on single convolution models is limited by the inherent defects of convolution itself. Convolution pays attention to the local features while underestimates the global features. The long-term dependence of the electroencephalogram (EEG) data cannot be captured. In view of these defects, a hybrid model called STCNN based on Swin transformer (ST) and 2D convolutional neural network (2DCNN) is proposed. Time-frequency features extracted by short-term Fourier transform (STFT) are taken as the input of STCNN. ST blocks are used in STCNN to capture the global information and long-term dependencies of EEGs. Meanwhile, the 2DCNN blocks are adopted to capture the local information and short-term dependent features. The combination of the two blocks can fully exploit the seizure-related information thus improve the prediction performance. Comprehensive experiments are performed on the CHB-MIT scalp EEG dataset. The average seizure prediction sensitivity, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) and the false positive rate (FPR) are 92.94%, 95.56% and 0.073, respectively. | 2023 | Hybrid Attention Network for Epileptic EEG ClassificationabstractAutomatic seizure detection from electroencephalography (EEG) based on deep learning has been significantly improved. However, existing works have not adequately excavate the spatial-temporal information between EEG channels. Besides, most works mainly focus on patient-specific scenarios while cross-patient seizure detection is more challenging and meaningful. Regarding the above problems, we propose a hybrid attention network (HAN) for automatic seizure detection. Specifically, the graph attention network (GAT) extracts spatial features at the front end, and Transformer gets time features as the back end. HAN leverages the attention mechanism and fully extracts the spatial-temporal correlation of EEG signals. The focal loss function is introduced to HAN to deal with the imbalance of the dataset accompanied by seizure detection based on EEG. Both patient-specific and patient-independent experiments are carried out on the public CHB-MIT database. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of HAN in both experimental settings. | 2022 | Deep Convolution Generative Adversarial Network-Based Electroencephalogram Data Augmentation for Post-Stroke Rehabilitation with Motor ImageryabstractThe motor imagery brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) system is currently one of the most advanced rehabilitation technologies, and it can be used to restore the motor function of stroke patients. The deep learning algorithms in the MI-BCI system require lots of training samples, but the electroencephalogram (EEG) data of stroke patients is quite scarce. Therefore, the expansion of EEG data has become an important part of stroke clinical rehabilitation research. In this paper, a deep convolution generative adversarial network (DCGAN) model is proposed to generate artificial EEG data and further expand the scale of the stroke dataset. First, multichannel one-dimensional EEG data is converted into a two-dimensional EEG spectrogram using EEG2Image based on the modified S-transform. Then, DCGAN is used to artificially generate EEG data based on MI. Finally, the validity of the generated artificial EEG data is proved. This paper preliminarily indicates that generating artificial stroke data is a promising strategy, which contributes to the further development of stroke clinical rehabilitation. | 2022 | Automatic Seizure Identification from EEG Signals Based on Brain Connectivity LearningabstractEpilepsy is a neurological disorder caused by brain dysfunction, which could cause uncontrolled behavior, loss of consciousness and other hazards. Electroencephalography (EEG) is an indispensable auxiliary tool for clinical diagnosis. Great progress has been made by current seizure identification methods. However, the performance of the methods on different patients varies a lot. In order to deal with this problem, we propose an automatic seizure identification method based on brain connectivity learning. The connectivity of different brain regions is modeled by a graph. Different from the manually defined graph structure, our method can extract the optimal graph structure and EEG features in an end-to-end manner. Combined with the popular graph attention neural network (GAT), this method achieves high performance and stability on different patients from the CHB-MIT dataset. The average values of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F1-score and AUC of the proposed model are 98.90%, 98.33%, 98.48%, 97.72% and 98.54%, respectively. The standard deviations of the above five indicators are 0.0049, 0.0125, 0.0116 and 0.0094, respectively. Compared with the existing seizure identification methods, the stability of the proposed model is improved by 78-95%. | 2021 | Graph Attention Network with Focal Loss for Seizure Detection on Electroencephalography SignalsabstractAutomatic seizure detection from electroencephalogram (EEG) plays a vital role in accelerating epilepsy diagnosis. Previous researches on seizure detection mainly focused on extracting time-domain and frequency-domain features from single electrodes, while paying little attention to the positional correlations between different EEG channels of the same subject. Moreover, data imbalance is common in seizure detection scenarios where the duration of nonseizure periods is much longer than the duration of seizures. To cope with the two challenges, a novel seizure detection method based on graph attention network (GAT) is presented. The approach acts on graph-structured data and takes the raw EEG data as input. The positional relationship between different EEG signals is exploited by GAT. The loss function of the GAT model is redefined using the focal loss to tackle data imbalance problem. Experiments are conducted on the CHB-MIT dataset. The accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the proposed method are 98.89[Formula: see text], 97.10[Formula: see text] and 99.63[Formula: see text], respectively. | 2014 | Person re-identification by free energy score space encodingabstractPerson re-identification is an important and challenging computer vision problem. Recent progress in this area is due to new visual features and models that deals with cross-view variations. Instead of working towards more complex models, we focus on low level features and their encoding. Low level features capturing the color and structural information are first extracted from human images. Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is then employed to approximate the distribution of the features, providing a relatively comprehensive statistical representation. Finally, low level features are mapped to a space by computing free energy score of the GMM. The mapped features are encoded into a fixed-length feature vector for person re-identification. Extensive experiments are conducted on several public datasets. Comparisons with benchmark person re-identification methods show the promising performance of our approach.
