| 2025 | VideoElevator: Elevating Video Generation Quality with Versatile Text-to-Image Diffusion ModelsabstractText-to-image diffusion models (T2I) have demonstrated unprecedented capabilities in creating realistic and aesthetic images. On the contrary, text-to-video diffusion models (T2V) still lag far behind in frame quality and text alignment, owing to insufficient quality and quantity of training videos. In this paper, we introduce VideoElevator, a training-free and plug-and-play method, which elevates the performance of T2V using superior capabilities of T2I. Different from conventional T2V sampling (i.e., temporal and spatial modeling), VideoElevator explicitly decomposes each sampling step into temporal motion refining and spatial quality elevating. Specifically, temporal motion refining uses encapsulated T2V to enhance temporal consistency, followed by inverting to the noise distribution required by T2I. Then, spatial quality elevating harnesses inflated T2I to directly predict less noisy latent, adding more photo-realistic details. We have conducted experiments in extensive prompts under the combination of various T2V and T2I. The results show that VideoElevator not only improves the performance of T2V baselines with foundational T2I, but also facilitates stylistic video synthesis with personalized T2I. | 2025 | GenColor: Generative and Expressive Color Enhancement with Pixel-Perfect Texture PreservationabstractColor enhancement is a crucial yet challenging task in digital photography. It demands methods that are (i) expressive enough for fine-grained adjustments, (ii) adaptable to diverse inputs, and (iii) able to preserve texture. Existing approaches typically fall short in at least one of these aspects, yielding unsatisfactory results. We propose GenColor, a novel diffusion-based framework for sophisticated, texture-preserving color enhancement. GenColor reframes the task as conditional image generation. Leveraging ControlNet and a tailored training scheme, it learns advanced color transformations that adapt to diverse lighting and content. We train GenColor on ARTISAN, our newly collected large-scale dataset of 1.2M high-quality photographs specifically curated for enhancement tasks. To overcome texture preservation limitations inherent in diffusion models, we introduce a color-transfer network with a novel degradation scheme that simulates texture–color relationships. This network achieves pixel-perfect texture preservation while enabling fine-grained color matching with the diffusion-generated reference images. Extensive experiments show that GenColor produces visually compelling results comparable to those of expert colorists and surpasses state-of-the-art methods in both subjective and objective evaluations. | 2024 | Improving Diffusion-Based Image Restoration with Error Contraction and Error CorrectionabstractGenerative diffusion prior captured from the off-the-shelf denoising diffusion generative model has recently attained significant interest. However, several attempts have been made to adopt diffusion models to noisy inverse problems either fail to achieve satisfactory results or require a few thousand iterations to achieve high-quality reconstructions. In this work, we propose a diffusion-based image restoration with error contraction and error correction (DiffECC) method. Two strategies are introduced to contract the restoration error in the posterior sampling process. First, we combine existing CNN-based approaches with diffusion models to ensure data consistency from the beginning. Second, to amplify the error contraction effects of the noise, a restart sampling algorithm is designed. In the error correction strategy, the estimation-correction idea is proposed on both the data term and the prior term. Solving them iteratively within the diffusion sampling framework leads to superior image generation results. Experimental results for image restoration tasks such as super-resolution (SR), Gaussian deblurring, and motion deblurring demonstrate that our approach can reconstruct high-quality images compared with state-of-the-art sampling-based diffusion models. | 2024 | ChromaFusionNet (CFNet): Natural Fusion of Fine-Grained Color EditingabstractDigital image enhancement aims to deliver visually striking, pleasing images that align with human perception. While global techniques can elevate the image's overall aesthetics, fine-grained color enhancement can further boost visual appeal and expressiveness. However, colorists frequently face challenges in achieving accurate, localized color adjustments. Direct composition of these local edits can result in spatial color inconsistencies. Existing methods, including color style transfer and image harmonization, exhibit inconsistencies, especially at boundary regions. Addressing this, we present ChromaFusionNet (CFNet), a novel approach that views the color fusion problem through the lens of image color inpainting. Built on the Vision Transformer architecture, CFNet captures global context and delivers high-fidelity outputs, seamlessly blending colors while preserving boundary integrity. Empirical studies on ImageNet and COCO datasets demonstrate CFNet's superiority over existing methods in maintaining color harmony and color fidelity. Robustness evaluations and user studies have further validated the effectiveness of CFNet. In conclusion, CFNet introduces an innovative approach to seamless, fine-grained color fusion, paving the way for advancements in the domain of fine-grained color editing. | 2024 | Image Aesthetics Assessment Via Learnable QueriesabstractImage aesthetics assessment (IAA) aims to estimate the aesthetics of images. Depending on the content of an image, diverse criteria need to be selected to assess its aesthetics. Existing works utilize pre-trained vision backbones based on content knowledge to learn image aesthetics. However, training those backbones is time-consuming and suffers from attention dispersion. Inspired by learnable queries in vision-language alignment, we propose the Image Aesthetics Assessment via Learnable Queries (IAA-LQ) approach. It adapts learnable queries to extract aesthetic features from pre-trained image features obtained from a frozen image encoder. Extensive experiments on real-world data demonstrate the advantages of IAA-LQ, beating the best state-of-the-art method by 2.2% and 2.1% in terms of SRCC and PLCC, respectively. | 2024 | Multi-modal Learnable Queries for Image Aesthetics AssessmentabstractImage aesthetics assessment (IAA) is attracting wide interest with the prevalence of social media. The problem is challenging due to its subjective and ambiguous nature. Instead of directly extracting aesthetic features solely from the image, user comments associated with an image could potentially provide complementary knowledge that is useful for IAA. With existing large-scale pre-trained models demonstrating strong capabilities in extracting high-quality transferable visual and textual features, learnable queries are shown to be effective in extracting useful features from the pre-trained visual features. Therefore, in this paper, we propose MMLQ, which utilizes multi-modal learnable queries to extract aesthetics-related features from multi-modal pre-trained features. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that MMLQ achieves new state-of-the-art performance on multimodal IAA, beating previous methods by 7.7% and 8.3% in terms of SRCC and PLCC, respectively. | 2023 | DDColor: Towards Photo-Realistic Image Colorization via Dual DecodersabstractImage colorization is a challenging problem due to multi-modal uncertainty and high ill-posedness. Directly training a deep neural network usually leads to incorrect semantic colors and low color richness. While transformer-based methods can deliver better results, they often rely on manually designed priors, suffer from poor generalization ability, and introduce color bleeding effects. To address these issues, we propose DDColor, an end-to-end method with dual decoders for image colorization. Our approach includes a pixel decoder and a query-based color decoder. The former restores the spatial resolution of the image, while the latter utilizes rich visual features to refine color queries, thus avoiding hand-crafted priors. Our two decoders work together to establish correlations between color and multi-scale semantic representations via cross-attention, significantly alleviating the color bleeding effect. Additionally, a simple yet effective colorfulness loss is introduced to enhance the color richness. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DDColor achieves superior performance to existing state-of-the-art works both quantitatively and qualitatively. | 2023 | RSFNet: A White-Box Image Retouching Approach using Region-Specific Color FiltersabstractRetouching images is an essential aspect of enhancing the visual appeal of photos. Although users often share common aesthetic preferences, their retouching methods may vary based on their individual preferences. Therefore, there is a need for white-box approaches that produce satisfying results and enable users to conveniently edit their images simultaneously. Recent white-box retouching methods rely on cascaded global filters that provide image-level filter arguments but cannot perform fine-grained retouching. In contrast, colorists typically employ a divide-andconquer approach, performing a series of region-specific fine-grained enhancements when using traditional tools like Davinci Resolve. We draw on this insight to develop a white-box framework for photo retouching using parallel region-specific filters, called RSFNet. Our model generates filter arguments (e.g., saturation, contrast, hue) and attention maps of regions for each filter simultaneously. Instead of cascading filters, RSFNet employs linear summations of filters, allowing for a more diverse range of filter classes that can be trained more easily. Our experiments demonstrate that RSFNet achieves state-of-the-art results, offering satisfying aesthetic appeal and increased user convenience for editable white-box retouching. | 2023 | FastLLVE: Real-Time Low-Light Video Enhancement with Intensity-Aware Look-Up TableabstractLow-Light Video Enhancement (LLVE) has received considerable attention in recent years. One of the critical requirements of LLVE is inter-frame brightness consistency, which is essential for maintaining the temporal coherence of the enhanced video. However, most existing single-image-based methods fail to address this issue, resulting in flickering effect that degrades the overall quality after enhancement. Moreover, 3D Convolution Neural Network (CNN)-based methods, which are designed for video to maintain inter-frame consistency, are computationally expensive, making them impractical for real-time applications. To address these issues, we propose an efficient pipeline named FastLLVE that leverages the Look-Up-Table (LUT) technique to maintain inter-frame brightness consistency effectively. Specifically, we design a learnable Intensity-Aware LUT (IA-LUT) module for adaptive enhancement, which addresses the low-dynamic problem in low-light scenarios. This enables FastLLVE to perform low-latency and low-complexity enhancement operations while maintaining high-quality results. Experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method achieves the State-Of-The-Art (SOTA) performance in terms of both image quality and inter-frame brightness consistency. More importantly, our FastLLVE can process 1,080p videos at 50+ Frames Per Second (FPS), which is 2 X faster than SOTA CNN-based methods in inference time, making it a promising solution for real-time applications. | 2022 | Active Boundary Loss for Semantic SegmentationabstractThis paper proposes a novel active boundary loss for semantic segmentation. It can progressively encourage the alignment between predicted boundaries and ground-truth boundaries during end-to-end training, which is not explicitly enforced in commonly used cross-entropy loss. Based on the predicted boundaries detected from the segmentation results using current network parameters, we formulate the boundary alignment problem as a differentiable direction vector prediction problem to guide the movement of predicted boundaries in each iteration. Our loss is model-agnostic and can be plugged in to the training of segmentation networks to improve the boundary details. Experimental results show that training with the active boundary loss can effectively improve the boundary F-score and mean Intersection-over-Union on challenging image and video object segmentation datasets. | 2022 | SmartShots: An Optimization Approach for Generating Videos with Data Visualizations EmbeddedabstractVideos are well-received methods for storytellers to communicate various narratives. To further engage viewers, we introduce a novel visual medium where data visualizations are embedded into videos to present data insights. However, creating such data-driven videos requires professional video editing skills, data visualization knowledge, and even design talents. To ease the difficulty, we propose an optimization method and develop SmartShots, which facilitates the automatic integration of in-video visualizations. For its development, we first collaborated with experts from different backgrounds, including information visualization, design, and video production. Our discussions led to a design space that summarizes crucial design considerations along three dimensions: visualization, embedded layout, and rhythm. Based on that, we formulated an optimization problem that aims to address two challenges: (1) embedding visualizations while considering both contextual relevance and aesthetic principles and (2) generating videos by assembling multi-media materials. We show how SmartShots solves this optimization problem and demonstrate its usage in three cases. Finally, we report the results of semi-structured interviews with experts and amateur users on the usability of SmartShots. | 2021 | Noise-Resistant Deep Metric Learning With Ranking-Based Instance SelectionabstractThe existence of noisy labels in real-world data negatively impacts the performance of deep learning models. Although much research effort has been devoted to improving robustness to noisy labels in classification tasks, the problem of noisy labels in deep metric learning (DML) remains open. In this paper, we propose a noise-resistant training technique for DML, which we name Probabilistic Ranking-based Instance Selection with Memory (PRISM). PRISM identifies noisy data in a minibatch using average similarity against image features extracted by several previous versions of the neural network. These features are stored in and retrieved from a memory bank. To alleviate the high computational cost brought by the memory bank, we introduce an acceleration method that replaces individual data points with the class centers. In extensive comparisons with 12 existing approaches under both synthetic and real-world label noise, PRISM demonstrates superior performance of up to 6.06% in Precision@1. | 2021 | GAN Prior Embedded Network for Blind Face Restoration in the WildabstractBlind face restoration (BFR) from severely degraded face images in the wild is a very challenging problem. Due to the high illness of the problem and the complex unknown degradation, directly training a deep neural network (DNN) usually cannot lead to acceptable results. Existing generative adversarial network (GAN) based methods can produce better results but tend to generate over-smoothed restorations. In this work, we propose a new method by first learning a GAN for high-quality face image generation and embedding it into a U-shaped DNN as a prior decoder, then fine-tuning the GAN prior embedded DNN with a set of synthesized low-quality face images. The GAN blocks are designed to ensure that the latent code and noise input to the GAN can be respectively generated from the deep and shallow features of the DNN, controlling the global face structure, local face details and background of the reconstructed image. The proposed GAN prior embedded network (GPEN) is easy-to-implement, and it can generate visually photo-realistic results. Our experiments demonstrated that the proposed GPEN achieves significantly superior results to state-of-the-art BFR methods both quantitatively and qualitatively, especially for the restoration of severely degraded face images in the wild. | 2021 | Enhancing Viewing Experience of Generated Visual Storylines for Promotional VideosabstractVisual storyline generation is the problem of selecting and sequencing a set of visual materials (i.e. images and video clips) to produce a video to elicit certain cognitive or emotional responses from viewers. In this paper, we enhance the viewing experience of generated visual storylines with the Shot Composition, Selection and Plotting (ShotCSP) approach. Designed for generating promotional videos in ecommerce settings, ShotCSP considers three key film-making principles into the visual storyline generation pipeline: a) proximity-aware scene transition, b) sound logic flow, and c) graphic discontinuity. We propose two novel metrics to enhance viewing experience: 1) Semantic Distance, which measures how related a shot is to the product being promoted; and 2) Salient Region Ratio, which estimates attention to product details in a shot. Through large-scale user evaluation involving 1,748 pairwise comparisons against five state-of-the-art approaches, ShotCSP achieves significantly improved viewing experience. It is a promising approach to enable AI generated promotional videos to benefit e-commerce businesses. | 2021 | Attention-guided Temporally Coherent Video Object MattingabstractThis paper proposes a novel deep learning-based video object matting method that can achieve temporally coherent matting results. Its key component is an attention-based temporal aggregation module that maximizes image matting networks' strength for video matting networks. This module computes temporal correlations for pixels adjacent to each other along the time axis in feature space, which is robust against motion noises. We also design a novel loss term to train the attention weights, which drastically boosts the video matting performance. Besides, we show how to effectively solve the trimap generation problem by fine-tuning a state-of-the-art video object segmentation network with a sparse set of user-annotated keyframes. To facilitate video matting and trimap generation networks' training, we construct a large-scale video matting dataset with 80 training and 28 validation foreground video clips with ground-truth alpha mattes. | 2021 | Towards Fine-Grained Human Pose Transfer With Detail Replenishing NetworkabstractHuman pose transfer (HPT) is an emerging research topic with huge potential in fashion design, media production, online advertising and virtual reality. For these applications, the visual realism of fine-grained appearance details is crucial for production quality and user engagement. However, existing HPT methods often suffer from three fundamental issues: detail deficiency, content ambiguity and style inconsistency, which severely degrade the visual quality and realism of generated images. Aiming towards real-world applications, we develop a more challenging yet practical HPT setting, termed as Fine-grained Human Pose Transfer (FHPT), with a higher focus on semantic fidelity and detail replenishment. Concretely, we analyze the potential design flaws of existing methods via an illustrative example, and establish the core FHPT methodology by combing the idea of content synthesis and feature transfer together in a mutually-guided fashion. Thereafter, we substantiate the proposed methodology with a Detail Replenishing Network (DRN) and a corresponding coarse-to-fine model training scheme. Moreover, we build up a complete suite of fine-grained evaluation protocols to address the challenges of FHPT in a comprehensive manner, including semantic analysis, structural detection and perceptual quality assessment. Extensive experiments on the DeepFashion benchmark dataset have verified the power of proposed benchmark against start-of-the-art works, with 12%-14% gain on top-10 retrieval recall, 5% higher joint localization accuracy, and near 40% gain on face identity preservation. | 2021 | DecorIn: An Automatic Method for Plane-Based DecoratingabstractThere is an increasing demand for interior design and decorating. The main challenges are where to put the objects and how to put them plausibly in the given domain. In this article, we propose an automatic method for decorating the planes in a given image. We call it Decoration In (DecorIn for short). Given an image, we first extract planes as decorating candidates according to the estimated geometric features. Then we parameterize the planes with an orthogonal and semantically consistent grid. Finally, we compute the position for the decoration, i.e., a decoration box, on the plane by an example-based decorating method which can describe the partial image and compute the similarity between partial scenes. We have conducted comprehensive evaluations and demonstrate our method on a number of applications. Our method is more efficient both in time and economic than generating a layout from scratch. | 2021 | PlotThread: Creating Expressive Storyline Visualizations using Reinforcement LearningabstractStoryline visualizations are an effective means to present the evolution of plots and reveal the scenic interactions among characters. However, the design of storyline visualizations is a difficult task as users need to balance between aesthetic goals and narrative constraints. Despite that the optimization-based methods have been improved significantly in terms of producing aesthetic and legible layouts, the existing (semi-) automatic methods are still limited regarding 1) efficient exploration of the storyline design space and 2) flexible customization of storyline layouts. In this work, we propose a reinforcement learning framework to train an AI agent that assists users in exploring the design space efficiently and generating well-optimized storylines. Based on the framework, we introduce PlotThread, an authoring tool that integrates a set of flexible interactions to support easy customization of storyline visualizations. To seamlessly integrate the AI agent into the authoring process, we employ a mixed-initiative approach where both the agent and designers work on the same canvas to boost the collaborative design of storylines. We evaluate the reinforcement learning model through qualitative and quantitative experiments and demonstrate the usage of PlotThread using a collection of use cases. | 2020 | Region-Adaptive Texture Enhancement For Detailed Person Image SynthesisabstractThe ability to produce convincing textural details is essential for the fidelity of synthesized person images. Existing methods typically follow a “warping-based” strategy that propagates appearance features through the same pathway used for pose transfer. However, most fine-grained features would be lost during down-sampling, leading to over-smoothed clothes and missing details in the output images. In this paper we presents RATE-Net, a novel framework for synthesizing person images with sharp texture details. The proposed framework leverages an additional texture enhancing module to extract appearance information from the source image and estimate a fine-grained residual texture map, which helps to refine the coarse estimation from the pose transfer module. In addition, we design an effective alternate updating strategy to promote mutual guidance between two modules for better shape and appearance consistency. | 2020 | HiFaceGAN: Face Renovation via Collaborative Suppression and ReplenishmentabstractExisting face restoration researches typically rely on either the image degradation prior or explicit guidance labels for training, which often lead to limited generalization ability over real-world images with heterogeneous degradation and rich background contents. In this paper, we investigate a more challenging and practical "dual-blind" version of the problem by lifting the requirements on both types of prior, termed as "Face Renovation"(FR). Specifically, we formulate FR as a semantic-guided generation problem and tackle it with a collaborative suppression and replenishment (CSR) approach. This leads to HiFaceGAN, a multi-stage framework containing several nested CSR units that progressively replenish facial details based on the hierarchical semantic guidance extracted from the front-end content-adaptive suppression modules. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real face images have verified the superior performance of our HiFaceGAN over a wide range of challenging restoration subtasks, demonstrating its versatility, robustness and generalization ability towards real-world face processing applications. | 2019 | Generating Persuasive Visual Storylines for Promotional VideosabstractVideo contents have become a critical tool for promoting products in E-commerce. However, the lack of automatic promotional video generation solutions makes large-scale video-based promotion campaigns infeasible. The first step of automatically producing promotional videos is to generate visual storylines, which is to select the building block footage and place them in an appropriate order. This task is related to the subjective viewing experience. It is hitherto performed by human experts and thus, hard to scale. To address this problem, we propose WundtBackpack, an algorithmic approach to generate storylines based on available visual materials, which can be video clips or images. It consists of two main parts, 1) the Learnable Wundt Curve to evaluate the perceived persuasiveness based on the stimulus intensity of a sequence of visual materials, which only requires a small volume of data to train; and 2) a clustering-based backpacking algorithm to generate persuasive sequences of visual materials while considering video length constraints. In this way, the proposed approach provides a dynamic structure to empower artificial intelligence (AI) to organize video footage in order to construct a sequence of visual stimuli with persuasive power. Extensive real-world experiments show that our approach achieves close to 10% higher perceived persuasiveness scores by human testers, and 12.5% higher expected revenue compared to the best performing state-of-the-art approach. | 2019 | A Late Fusion CNN for Digital MattingabstractThis paper studies the structure of a deep convolutional neural network to predict the foreground alpha matte by taking a single RGB image as input. Our network is fully convolutional with two decoder branches for the foreground and background classification respectively. Then a fusion branch is used to integrate the two classification results which gives rise to alpha values as the soft segmentation result. This design provides more degrees of freedom than a single decoder branch for the network to obtain better alpha values during training. The network can implicitly produce trimaps without user interaction, which is easy to use for novices without expertise in digital matting. | 2019 | Personalized Video Summarization with Idiom AdaptationabstractShort videos are becoming key for media consumers exploring the TV and Internet. The production of short videos however remains costly. In this paper, we present a domain specific video summarization application with idiom adaptation that leverages multimedia content analysis and insights from cinematic and persuasive domains. From the back-end, content curators can push raw materials and the pre-processing algorithms will automatically extract the features and encode them as editing idioms. Users can create personalized video summaries based on these idioms. We have validated the effectiveness of the demonstration on a TVC data-set with over 600 videos, enabling production of domain specific video summaries with combinations of editing idioms. This approach has been put into trial in the testbed at Alibaba Wood. Chang Liu 0040, Zhiqi Shen 0001, Han Yu 0001, Zhanning Gao, Pan Wang 0008, Changgong Zhang, Peiran Ren, Xuansong Xie |

| 2019 | Domain Specific and Idiom Adaptive Video SummarizationabstractAs short videos become an increasingly popular form of storytelling, there is a growing demand for video summarization to convey information concisely with a subset of video frames. Some criteria such as interestingness and diversity are used by existing efforts to pick appropriate segments of content. However, there lacks a mechanism to infuse insights from cinematography and persuasion into this process. As a result, the results of the video summarization sometimes deviate from the original. In addition, the exploration of the vast design space to create customized video summaries is costly for video producer. To address these challenges, we propose a domain specific and idiom adaptive video summarization approach. Specifically, our approach first segments the input video and extracts high-level information from each segment. Such labels are used to represent a collection of idioms and summarization metrics as submodular components which users can combine to create personalized summary styles in a variety of ways. In order to identify the importance of the idioms and metrics in different domains, we leverage max margin learning. Experimental results have validated the effectiveness of our approach. We also plan to release a dataset containing over 600 videos with expert annotations which can benefit further research in this area. | 2017 | Neural Aggregation Network for Video Face RecognitionabstractThis paper presents a Neural Aggregation Network (NAN) for video face recognition. The network takes a face video or face image set of a person with a variable number of face images as its input, and produces a compact, fixed-dimension feature representation for recognition. The whole network is composed of two modules. The feature embedding module is a deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which maps each face image to a feature vector. The aggregation module consists of two attention blocks which adaptively aggregate the feature vectors to form a single feature inside the convex hull spanned by them. Due to the attention mechanism, the aggregation is invariant to the image order. Our NAN is trained with a standard classification or verification loss without any extra supervision signal, and we found that it automatically learns to advocate high-quality face images while repelling low-quality ones such as blurred, occluded and improperly exposed faces. The experiments on IJB-A, YouTube Face, Celebrity-1000 video face recognition benchmarks show that it consistently outperforms naive aggregation methods and achieves the state-of-the-art accuracy. | 2015 | Image based relighting using neural networksabstractWe present a neural network regression method for relighting realworld scenes from a small number of images. The relighting in this work is formulated as the product of the scene's light transport matrix and new lighting vectors, with the light transport matrix reconstructed from the input images. Based on the observation that there should exist non-linear local coherence in the light transport matrix, our method approximates matrix segments using neural networks that model light transport as a non-linear function of light source position and pixel coordinates. Central to this approach is a proposed neural network design which incorporates various elements that facilitate modeling of light transport from a small image set. In contrast to most image based relighting techniques, this regression-based approach allows input images to be captured under arbitrary illumination conditions, including light sources moved freely by hand. We validate our method with light transport data of real scenes containing complex lighting effects, and demonstrate that fewer input images are required in comparison to related techniques. | 2013 | Global illumination with radiance regression functionsabstractWe present radiance regression functions for fast rendering of global illumination in scenes with dynamic local light sources. A radiance regression function (RRF) represents a non-linear mapping from local and contextual attributes of surface points, such as position, viewing direction, and lighting condition, to their indirect illumination values. The RRF is obtained from precomputed shading samples through regression analysis, which determines a function that best fits the shading data. For a given scene, the shading samples are precomputed by an offline renderer. The key idea behind our approach is to exploit the nonlinear coherence of the indirect illumination data to make the RRF both compact and fast to evaluate. We model the RRF as a multilayer acyclic feed-forward neural network, which provides a close functional approximation of the indirect illumination and can be efficiently evaluated at run time. To effectively model scenes with spatially variant material properties, we utilize an augmented set of attributes as input to the neural network RRF to reduce the amount of inference that the network needs to perform. To handle scenes with greater geometric complexity, we partition the input space of the RRF model and represent the subspaces with separate, smaller RRFs that can be evaluated more rapidly. As a result, the RRF model scales well to increasingly complex scene geometry and material variation. Because of its compactness and ease of evaluation, the RRF model enables real-time rendering with full global illumination effects, including changing caustics and multiple-bounce high-frequency glossy interreflections. | 2011 | Pocket reflectometryabstractWe present a simple, fast solution for reflectance acquisition using tools that fit into a pocket. Our method captures video of a flat target surface from a fixed video camera lit by a hand-held, moving, linear light source. After processing, we obtain an SVBRDF. We introduce a BRDF chart , analogous to a color "checker" chart, which arranges a set of known-BRDF reference tiles over a small card. A sequence of light responses from the chart tiles as well as from points on the target is captured and matched to reconstruct the target's appearance. We develop a new algorithm for BRDF reconstruction which works directly on these LDR responses, without knowing the light or camera position, or acquiring HDR lighting. It compensates for spatial variation caused by the local (finite distance) camera and light position by warping responses over time to align them to a specular reference. After alignment, we find an optimal linear combination of the Lambertian and purely specular reference responses to match each target point's response. The same weights are then applied to the corresponding (known) reference BRDFs to reconstruct the target point's BRDF. We extend the basic algorithm to also recover varying surface normals by adding two spherical caps for diffuse and specular references to the BRDF chart. We demonstrate convincing results obtained after less than 30 seconds of data capture, using commercial mobile phone cameras in a casual environment. Peiran Ren, Jiaping Wang, John M. | 2009 | All-frequency rendering of dynamic, spatially-varying reflectanceabstractWe describe a technique for real-time rendering of dynamic, spatially-varying BRDFs in static scenes with all-frequency shadows from environmental and point lights. The 6D SVBRDF is represented with a general microfacet model and spherical lobes fit to its 4D spatially-varying normal distribution function (SVNDF). A sum of spherical Gaussians (SGs) provides an accurate approximation with a small number of lobes. Parametric BRDFs are fit on-the-fly using simple analytic expressions; measured BRDFs are fit as a preprocess using nonlinear optimization. Our BRDF representation is compact, allows detailed textures, is closed under products and rotations, and supports reflectance of arbitrarily high specularity. At run-time, SGs representing the NDF are warped to align the half-angle vector to the lighting direction and multiplied by the microfacet shadowing and Fresnel factors. This yields the relevant 2D view slice on-the-fly at each pixel, still represented in the SG basis. We account for macro-scale shadowing using a new, nonlinear visibility representation based on spherical signed distance functions (SSDFs). SSDFs allow per-pixel interpolation of high-frequency visibility without ghosting and can be multiplied by the BRDF and lighting efficiently on the GPU. Jiaping Wang, Peiran Ren, Minmin Gong, John M.
