MSTest: A Property-Oriented, Comprehensive, and Cross-Platform Test Suite of Memory SafetyabstractThe foundation of current software ecosystem is still unfortunately laid on memory unsafe languages, such as C/C++. Memory safety vulnerabilities remain as the primary source of bugs in the critical software stacks. Some of the advanced memory safety defenses are beginning to land on commercially available platforms, in the form of instruction-set architecture extensions, runtime enforcement by standard libraries and OSes, and compile-time checks. This tide of adoption of defenses brings us several questions: For a defense that is claimed supported on a platform, can it be actually deployed to directly benefit an application? For a defense claiming a certain level of protection regarding a type of memory safety on a platform, how solid is the protection? For two platforms implementing similar types of defenses, which one provides better guarantees? Endeavor to answer these questions, a memory safety test suite, namelyMSTest, is implemented. With its current 227 test cases, the test suite has already reached a wider coverage than all existing test suites and been ported to 19 platforms. To our best knowledge, MSTest is the first portable memory safety test suite conducting property-oriented testing, automatically resolving dependency between test cases, providing a comprehensive coverage on attack and defense capabilities, and capable of comparing memory safety cross platforms. | 2025 | WhistleBlower: A System-Level Empirical Study on RowHammerabstractWith frequent software-induced activations on DRAM rows, bit flips can occur on their physically adjacent rows (i.e., RowHammer). Existing studies leverage FPGA platforms to characterize RowHammer, which have identified key factors that contribute to RowHammer bit flips, e.g., data pattern. As the FPGA-based studies have removed the interference of the OS and the memory controller, their findings on the identified contributing factors do not always work as reported in a real-world computing system, resulting in negative effects on system-level RowHammer attacks and defenses. In this paper, we carry out a system-level empirical study on factors from both the software side and the DRAM side that contribute to RowHammer. We conduct the study on 33 DRAM modules including both DDR4 and DDR3, with 292 DRAM chips from various vendors. Our experimental results from the software side show that some prior findings about existing factors are inconsistent with our observations, thus not applicable to a real-world system. Also, we contribute to identifying one new factor that effectively affects RowHammer bit flips. Our DRAM-side results identify three types of new contributing factors and indicate that DRAM modules are more vulnerable if they achieve better performance and lower power consumption. Particularly, Intel XMP, intended for improving DRAM performance, might be abused for RowHammer attacks. | 2025 | The Early Bird Catches the Leak: Unveiling Timing Side Channels in LLM Serving SystemsabstractThe wide deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs) has given rise to strong demands for optimizing their inference performance. Today’s techniques serving this purpose primarily focus on reducing latency and improving throughput through algorithmic and hardware enhancements, while largely overlooking their privacy side effects, particularly in a multi-user environment. In our research, for the first time, we discovered a set of new timing side channels in LLM systems, arising from shared caches and GPU memory allocations, which can be exploited to infer both confidential system prompts and those issued by other users. These vulnerabilities echo security challenges observed in traditional computing systems, highlighting an urgent need to address potential information leakage in LLM serving infrastructures. In this paper, we report novel attack strategies designed to exploit such timing side channels inherent in LLM deployments, specifically targeting the Key-Value (KV) cache and semantic cache widely used to enhance LLM inference performance. Our approach leverages timing measurements and classification models to detect cache hits, allowing an adversary to infer private prompts with high accuracy. We also propose a token-by-token search algorithm to efficiently recover shared prompt prefixes in the caches, showing the feasibility of stealing system prompts and those produced by peer users. Our experimental studies on black-box testing of popular online LLM services demonstrate that such privacy risks are completely realistic, with significant consequences. Our findings underscore the need for robust mitigation to protect LLM systems against such emerging threats. | 2024 | Randomizing Set-Associative Caches Against Conflict-Based Cache Side-Channel AttacksabstractConflict-based cache side-channel attacks against the last-level cache (LLC) is a widely exploited method for information leaking. Cache randomization has recently been accepted as a promising defense. Most of recent designs randomize skewed caches rather than classic set-associative caches; however, skewed caches incur substantial performance overhead both in area and runtime. We cautiously argue that randomized set-associative caches can be sufficiently strengthened and possess a better chance to be adopted in the near future. For the first time, a dynamically randomized set-associative cache has been implemented in the LLC of a Linux capable multicore processor. A single-cycle hash logic is designed for randomizing the cache set indices. A multi-step relocation scheme is used to reduce the cost in remapping the cache layout. The randomized cache layout is remapped periodically for limiting the time window available to attackers. An attack detector is implemented to catch attacks in action and consequently trigger extra remaps. The evaluation results show that the randomized LLC has been sufficiently strengthened to thwart all existing fast algorithms for searching eviction sets with only marginal runtime overhead, and small area and power overhead. | 2023 | CTPP: A Fast and Stealth Algorithm for Searching Eviction Sets on Intel ProcessorsabstractEviction sets are essential components of the conflict-based cache side-channel attacks. However, it is not an easy task to construct eviction sets on modern Intel processors. As a promising defense against conflict-based cache side-channels, dynamic cache randomization makes the construction of eviction sets even more difficult by periodically randomizing the mapping between addresses and cache set indices. It forces attackers to develop fast search algorithms to find an eviction set at runtime with the lowest latency. Several fast search algorithms have been proposed in recent years. By using these algorithms, attackers regain the capability of launching useful attacks on dynamically randomized caches. Consequently, a detector was recently introduced to catch the fast search algorithms in action according to the uneven distribution of cache evictions. All existing fast search algorithms fail to work. Zihan Xue, Jinchi Han, Wei Song 0002

Randomized Last-Level Caches Are Still Vulnerable to Cache Side-Channel Attacks! But We Can Fix ItabstractCache randomization has recently been revived as a promising defense against conflict-based cache side-channel attacks. As two of the latest implementations, CEASER-S and ScatterCache both claim to thwart conflict-based cache side-channel attacks using randomized skewed caches. Unfortunately, our experiments show that an attacker can easily find a usable eviction set within the chosen remap period of CEASER-S and increasing the number of partitions without dynamic remapping, such as ScatterCache, cannot eliminate the threat. By quantitatively analyzing the access patterns left by various attacks in the LLC, we have newly discovered several problems with the hypotheses and implementations of randomized caches, which are also overlooked by the research on conflict-based cache side-channel attacks. However, cache randomization is not a false hope and it is an effective defense that should be widely adopted in future processors. The newly discovered problems are corresponding to flaws associated with the existing implementation of cache randomization and are fixable. Several new defense ideas are proposed in this paper. Our experiments show that all the newly discovered problems are fixed within the current performance budget. We also argue that randomized set-associative caches can be sufficiently strengthened and possess a better chance to be actually adopted in commercial processors than their skewed counterparts because they introduce less overhaul to the existing cache structure. | 2019 | RAGuard: An Efficient and User-Transparent Hardware Mechanism against ROP AttacksabstractControl-flow integrity (CFI) is a general method for preventing code-reuse attacks, which utilize benign code sequences to achieve arbitrary code execution. CFI ensures that the execution of a program follows the edges of its predefined static Control-Flow Graph: any deviation that constitutes a CFI violation terminates the application. Despite decades of research effort, there are still several implementation challenges in efficiently protecting the control flow of function returns (Return-Oriented Programming attacks). The set of valid return addresses of frequently called functions can be large and thus an attacker could bend the backward-edge CFI by modifying an indirect branch target to another within the valid return set. This article proposes RAGuard, an efficient and user-transparent hardware-based approach to prevent Return-Oreiented Programming attacks. RAGuard binds a message authentication code (MAC) to each return address to protect its integrity. To guarantee the security of the MAC and reduce runtime overhead: RAGuard (1) computes the MAC by encrypting the signature of a return address with AES-128, (2) develops a key management module based on a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) and a True Random Number Generator (TRNG), and (3) uses a dedicated register to reduce MACs’ load and store operations of leaf functions. We have evaluated our mechanism based on the open-source LEON3 processor and the results show that RAGuard incurs acceptable performance overhead and occupies reasonable area. | 2017 | Handling Physical-Layer Deadlock Caused by Permanent Faults in Quasi-Delay-Insensitive Networks-on-ChipabstractNetworks-on-Chip (NoCs) are promising fabrics to provide scalable and efficient on-chip communication for large-scale many-core systems. In place of the well-studied synchronous NoCs, the event-driven asynchronous ones have emerged as promising replacement thanks to their strong timing robustness especially when implemented in quasi-delay-insensitive (QDI) circuits. However, their fault tolerance has rarely been studied. The QDI NoCs show complicated failure scenarios and behave differently from synchronous ones. As the scaling semiconductor technology is expected with the accelerated aging process, permanent faults become more likely to happen at runtime. These faults can break the handshake, leading to physical-layer deadlocks which can spread and paralyze the whole QDI NoC. This physical-layer deadlock cannot be resolved using conventional fault-tolerant or deadlock management techniques. This paper systematically studies the impact of permanent faults on QDI NoCs, and presents novel deadlock detection and recovery techniques to handle the fault-caused physical-layer deadlock. The proposed detection technique has been implemented to protect the NoC data paths that occupy~90% of the logic. Employing the detection and recovery techniques to protect interrouter links (~60% of the logic), a permanently faulty link is precisely located and the network function can be recovered with graceful performance degradation. | 2016 | Parallel Hardware Merge SorterabstractSorting has tremendous usage in the applications that handle massive amount of data. Existing techniques accelerate sorting using multiprocessors or GPGPUs where a data set is partitioned into disjunctive subsets to allow multiple sorting threads working in parallel. Hardware sorters implemented in FPGAs have the potential of providing high-speed and low-energy solutions but the partition algorithms used in software systems are so data dependent that they cannot be easily adopted. The speed of most current sequential sorters still hangs around 1 number/cycle. Recently a new hardware merge sorter broke this speed limit by merging a large number of sorted sequences at a speed proportional to the number of sequences. This paper significantly improves its area and speed scalability by allowing stalls and variable sorting rate. A 32-port parallel merge-tree that merges 32 sequences is implemented in a Virtex-7 FPGA. It merges sequences at an average rate of 31.05 number/cycle and reduces the total sorting time by 160 times compared with traditional sequential sorters. | 2014 | An empirical evaluation of High-Level Synthesis languages and tools for database accelerationabstractHigh Level Synthesis (HLS) languages and tools are emerging as the most promising technique to make FPGAs more accessible to software developers. Nevertheless, picking the most suitable HLS for a certain class of algorithms depends on requirements such as area and throughput, as well as on programmer experience. In this paper, we explore the different trade-offs present when using a representative set of HLS tools in the context of Database Management Systems (DBMS) acceleration. More specifically, we conduct an empirical analysis of four representative frameworks (Bluespec SystemVerilog, Altera OpenCL, LegUp and Chisel) that we utilize to accelerate commonly-used database algorithms such as sorting, the median operator, and hash joins. Through our implementation experience and empirical results for database acceleration, we conclude that the selection of the most suitable HLS depends on a set of orthogonal characteristics, which we highlight for each HLS framework. | 2014 | On-line detection of the deadlocks caused by permanently faulty links in quasi-delay insensitive networks on chipabstractAsynchronous networks on chip (NoCs) are promising candidates for supporting the enormous communication needed by future many-core systems due to their low-energy and high-speed. Similar to synchronous NoCs, asynchronous NoCs are vulnerable to faults but their fault-tolerance is not studied adequately, especially the quasi-delay insensitive (QDI) NoCs. One of the key issues neglected by most designers is that permanent faults in QDI NoCs cause deadlocks, which cripples the traditional fault-tolerant techniques using redundant codes. A novel detection method has been proposed to locate the faulty link in a QDI NoC according to a common pattern shared by all fault-related deadlocks. It is shown that this method introduces low hardware overhead and reports permanently faulty links with a short delay and guaranteed accuracy. Wei Song 0002, Guangda Zhang, Jim D. Garside

Automatic data path extraction in large-scale register-transfer level designsabstractExtracting data paths in large-scale register-transfer level designs has important usage in automatic verification of synchronous circuits and synthesis of asynchronous circuits. Current tools rely on users to provide the data/control partition or use state-space analyses to extract data paths. Due to the explosion of state-space, the latter method can be used in only small designs. To resolve this problem, a graphic search and trim method, which can extract data paths in large scale designs, is presented. A design is first translated into a graphic representation, namely a signal-level data flow graph (DFG), to reveal the connections between signals. By estimating the types (control or data) of these connections, a linear search algorithm can then remove all control-related signals in the graph, which effectively produces a DFG with pure data paths. Results show that this method extracts data paths of large scale designs in seconds. Wei Song 0002, Jim D. Garside, Doug A. Edwards

Automatic Controller Detection for Large Scale RTL DesignsabstractAutomatic detection of the finite state machines (FSMs) in a register transfer level (RTL) design is a widely utilised technique in logical synthesis for optimised FSM implementation and in hardware verification for the fast coverage of the control circuit. It is believed that FSM detection can also be used to explore the potential system partitions. Chosen an optimal partition, a large scale synchronous RTL system can be automatically converted into energy efficient globally asynchronous and locally synchronous (GALS) systems. A new FSM detection algorithm is presented providing a full coverage of all FSM-like controllers. It uses several criteria to detect FSMs on a register level abstracted graph generated from the RTL design. It is the first FSM detection algorithm that provides full FSM detection in the granularity level of signals without any restrictions on coding styles. Wei Song 0002, Jim D. Garside

| 2013 | Transient Fault Tolerant QDI Interconnects Using Redundant Check CodeabstractAsynchronous logic is a promising technology for building the chip-level interconnect of multi-core systems. However, asynchronous circuits are vulnerable to faults. This paper presents a novel scheme to improve the robustness of asynchronous systems. Our first contribution is a fault tolerant delay-insensitive redundant check coding scheme named DIRC. Using DIRC in 4-phase 1-of-n quasi-delay-insensitive (QDI) interconnects, all 1-bit and some multi-bit transient faults can be tolerated. The DIRC and the basic 4-phase 1-of-n pipeline stages are mutually exchangeable so that arbitrary basic stages can be replaced by DIRC stages to strengthen the fault-tolerance of long wires. Our second contribution, RPA, is a redundant technique to protect the acknowledge wires from transient faults - an issue that has long been disregarded by the community. The DIRC pipelines (using DIRC plus RPA) were simulated using the UMC 0.13μm standard cell library and compared with the basic pipelines. Detailed experimental results show that the 128-bit DIRC 1-of-4 pipeline is only 13% slower than the basic one but increases fault-tolerance hundred-folds when multi-bit transient faults are considered. | 2012 | Area efficient asynchronous SDM routers using 2-stage Clos switchesabstractAsynchronous on-chip networks are good candidates for multi-core applications requiring low-power consumption. Asynchronous spatial division multiplexing (SDM) routers provide better throughput with lower area overhead than asynchronous virtual channel routers; however, the area overhead of SDM routers is still significant due to their high-radix central switches. A new 2-stage Clos switch is proposed to reduce the area overhead of asynchronous SDM routers. It is shown that replacing the crossbars with the 2-stage Clos switches can significantly reduce the area overhead of SDM routers when more than two virtual circuits are used. The saturation throughput is slightly reduced but the area to throughput efficiency is improved. Using Clos switches increases the energy consumption of switches but the energy of buffers is reduced. | 2010 | A low latency wormhole router for asynchronous on-chip networksabstractAsynchronous on-chip networks are power efficient and tolerant to process variation but they are slower than synchronous on-chip networks. A low latency asynchronous wormhole router is proposed using sliced sub-channels and the lookahead pipeline. Channel slicing removes the C-element tree in the completion detection circuit and converts a channel into multiple independent sub-channels reducing the cycle period. The lookahead pipeline uses the early evaluation protocol to reduce cycle period. Using the lookahead pipeline on the pipeline stages with the maximal cycle period improves the overall throughput. The router is a pure standard cell design implemented by a 0.13 ¿m technology. The cycle period of the router at the typical corner is 1.7 ns, providing 2.35 GByte/sec throughput per port. | 2009 | Adaptive stochastic routing in fault-tolerant on-chip networksabstractDue to shrinking transistor geometries, on-chip circuits are becoming vulnerable to errors, but at the same time on-chip networks are required to provide reliable services over unreliable physical interconnects. A connection oriented stochastic routing (COSR) algorithm has been used on one NoC platform that provides excellent fault-tolerance and dynamic reconfiguration capability. A probability model has been built to analyze the COSR algorithm. According to the model, the performance may be improved by implementing a self learning mechanism in each router. Thus a new adaptive stochastic routing (ASR) algorithm is proposed whereby each router learns the network status from acknowledgement flits and stores the outcomes in a routing table. Simulation of both algorithms reveals that the ASR algorithm shows a higher path reservation success rate and a larger maximal accepted traffic than the COSR algorithm. The simulations also show that the learning procedures are accurate and that both algorithms are fault-tolerant to intermittent/permanent errors. Wei Song 0002, Doug A. Edwards, José L.
