2023 Acceptability and Renown of Digital Immortality Through the Lens of the User
abstract
Technology users will eventually face death in the offline world. However, their data may survive for a long time, recorded in a wide variety of digital services and devices. This digital legacy must be handled and legally abide by the owners' wishes, which may vary from inheritance to deletion. By carrying out a literature review on the subject, the authors noticed there is a lack of user studies on these issues. We, therefore, conducted a focus group with technology users of different profiles to understand the volunteers' acceptability of this topic. During the group discussions, an unexpected factor was raised: to what extent might a user's fame influence their digital immortalization? This study aims to discuss digital immortality in terms of its acceptability among users and to contribute to the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) with important insights on death in the digital world. In our findings regarding acceptability, users can feel some comfort in interacting with their deceased loved ones. Regarding fame, while influential individuals may not need digital immortality, there are concerns regarding the utilitarian nature of their legacies.

2023 Dead Users' Profiles on Facebook: Limited Interaction Beyond Human Existence
abstract
Abstract Death has become increasingly visible on social networks, especially after COVID-19, and Facebook addresses that with double standards: while some profiles remain active, others turn into memorials. This article investigates how Facebook’s system deals with dead users’ profiles either to support or restrict interactions concerning users’ deaths. Our qualitative analysis of data from 54 public profiles of people who died between June 2020 and March 2021 showed that (i) Facebook fails to communicate the criteria for transforming profiles into memorials; (ii) no information about their contacts of deceased users’ profiles is given; (iii) the frequency of interaction with memorials and with active profiles is different; (iv) profiles’ privacy settings shape interaction. Our results exemplify how a sociotechnical system influences people’s interactions with dead users’ profiles. We herein highlight implications for interaction design and evaluation, besides the need to consider interaction as existence, which raises big challenges to the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) community.

2018 Identifying Privacy Functional Requirements for Crowdsourcing Applications in Smart Cities
abstract
Information and Communication Technologies are indispensable components of smart cities. Its applications are present in several areas, such as urban mobility, environmental issues and medical systems. In this scenario, the use of crowdsourcing technologies comes to help people to contribute to the development and improvement of the urban digital services. However, using crowdsourced data in smart cities solutions can lead to problems with the security and the privacy of user's data. The setting of comprehensive Functional Requirements (FR) to ensure data privacy is an approach for preventing the occurrence of such issues. In this work, we intend to identify, from a literature review the main privacy requirements that have been observed in the development of applications that make use of crowdsourced data in Smart Cities scenarios.

2017 Life beyond the physical body: The possibilities of digital immortality
abstract
We are on the verge of a major shift in the way we perceive digital life, what may cause a significant impact to the real world. Gradually, through increasing knowledge in the areas of artificial intelligence, big data and machine learning, computers have been emulating deceased human beings and, symbolically, with the aid of technology, have been managing to conquer death. This article seeks to understand and problematize the ways in which digital immortality has manifested itself, particularly through digital memorials, chatbots and avatars. Companies like Facebook, Eter9 and Initiative 2045 allow a continuity of life after the death of its users. We analyze, through technical and philosophical questions, imbricated in this discussion, the implications of this digital immortality and how these issues are seen in a differentiated way with the presence of technology.

2017 Interacting with Digital Memorials in a Cemetery: Insights from an Immersive Practice
abstract
This research intends to analyze how users that are also HCI designers relate to the interaction with digital memorials linked to graves through QRcodes. To do so, we have carried out an immersive practice in the Consolação Cemetery (São Paulo, Brazil), where that technology is used to tag the graves of famous deceased people and to guide the visitors in the site. Those QR code tags link the graves to an online application for digital memorials called MemoriAll.To address the problem, this paper analyzes the data collected from the surveys answered by the research subjects before and after the immersive practice, along with data from a semiotic inspection of MemoriAll.

2016 Participatory design for the development of inclusive educational technologies: A systematic review
abstract
Computer technology offers huge potential for assisting People with Disabilities (PwD), whether in daily activities, rehabilitation, or educational processes. However, we observed in literature that High Assistive Technologies (HATs) must be customized for each PwD, since a technology that works for one does not always work for another. In this scenario, the Participatory Design (PD) approach proves adequately to produce customized HATs for PwD teaching and learning. Using PD approach, this paper discusses the adaptation of PD4CAT method, including the educational stakeholders in the process. This adaptation is based on results of the Systematic Review, from which derive methods, technics and technologies to support the development of educational technologies for PwD, including the user from the very beginning of the design process. The method was validated by a case study that involved a child with cerebral palsy, caregivers, therapists and educators. Therefore, an educational assistive technology was developed to support the child in the literacy process. It's intended, this way, to enable that HATS in educational context, as on the Computer Science and Engineering learning, can be developed in a participatory way and including educators on the design process, in order to facilitate the PwD learning in several knowledge areas.

2016 Mobile serious game proposal for environmental awareness of children
abstract
One of the many difficulties faced in cities include the accumulation of waste in streets, sidewalks, public squares, causing major environmental problems. This is not only due to lack of public policies and urban infrastructure, but also lack of citizen participation. Given this scenario, there is a crucial need to educate the people, especially children, who represent the future of society. This study presents a mobile serious game proposal, called “Protecting the Earth”, about selective waste collection, recycling, reduction of waste production and waste reuse in different game stages with focuses in childish public. The methodology adopted included Systematic Review; application of Participatory Design methods, such as the Context Inquiry technique; specification of functional and non-functional requirements and the study of technologies appropriate for developing the project. Experiments were conducted with children aiming to assess the proposed tool's interface. The results obtained by means of usability testing with users showed the need for adjustments in the interface in order to achieve greater accessibility and user satisfaction, and were met immediately. The next step is to perform learning evaluation experiments in order to verify if the proposed serious game is collaborating to acquire user knowledge about the study object (Environmental Education).

2006 DemIL: an online interaction language between citizen and government
abstract
Electronic democracy should provide information and service for the citizens on the Internet, allowing room for debate, participation and electronic voting. The languages being adopted by mass communication means, especially Reality Shows, are efficient and encourage public participation in decision-making. This paper discusses a citizen-government interaction language intended to facilitate citizen participation in the government's decisions. An e-Democracy Model for people participation through web-based technologies is conceived. This model specifies the syntax of an Democracy Interaction Language, a DemIL. Such language incorporates characteristics of Reality Show Formats, and it is the back-end of a web-interface project in the domain researched. The study of case Participative Budget of Brazil represents the language proposed.
