2020 A 171k-LUT Nonvolatile FPGA using Cu Atom-Switch Technology in 28nm CMOS
abstract
A nonvolatile FPGA using atom-switch crossbars is implemented in a 28nm CMOS. The depopulated atom-switch crossbar with double-gate layout achieves 75% area saving. The routability degradation due to the depopulation is mitigated by a modified routing architecture of mixed segment lengths with thinning out connection block populations. To our knowledge, the novel FPGA provides the largest logic capacity of 171k lookup-table (LUT) among 3D-FPGAs based on monolithically integrated nonvolatile switch and memory. The operating frequency and dynamic power are significantly improved as compared to conventional atom-switch FPGAs.

2018 Via-Switch FPGA: Highly Dense Mixed-Grained Reconfigurable Architecture With Overlay Via-Switch Crossbars
abstract
This paper proposes a highly dense reconfigurable architecture that introduces via-switch device, which is a nonvolatile resistive-change switch and is used in crossbar switches. Via-switch is implemented in back-end-of-line layers only, and hence the front-end-of-line (FEoL) layers under the crossbar can be fully exploited for highly dense logic blocks. The proposed architecture uses the FEoL layers for fine-grained lookup tables and coarse-grained arithmetic/memory units for improving performance and compatibility with various applications. A case study of application mapping shows the proposed architecture can reduce the array area by 21.7%, thanks to the bidirectional interconnection. Thanks to F2footprint and one order of magnitude lower resistivity of via-switch compared to MOS switch, the crossbar density is improved by up to 26× and the delay and energy in the interconnection are reduced by 90% and 94% at 0.5-V operation.

2016 A highly-dense mixed grained reconfigurable architecture with overlay crossbar interconnect using via-switch
abstract
This paper proposes a highly-dense reconfigurable architecture that introduces via-switch device, which is a kind of resistive RAM and is used in crossbar switches. Since via-switch is implemented in BEOL layers only, the FEOL layer under the crossbar can be fully exploited for highly-dense logic blocks. The proposed architecture uses the FEOL layer for fine-grained look-up tables and coarse-grained arithmetic/memory units for better performance and highly wide applications. In a case study of application mapping, the proposed architecture reduces array area by 76% thanks to mixed grained logic structure and overlay bidirectional interconnection. Thanks to 18F2footprint and one order of magnitude lower resistivity of via-switch compared to MOS switch, the crossbar density is improved by 26× and the delay and energy in the interconnection are reduced by 90% and 93% at 0.5V operation.

2015 Architecture of Reconfigurable-Logic Cell Array with Atom Switch: Cluster Size & Routing Fabrics (Abstract Only)
abstract
Emerging nonvolatile memories (NVMs) have a potential to overcome the issues in the conventional static random-access memory (SRAM) based reconfigurable logic cell arrays (RLCAs). Replacing a CMOS switch element composed of a SRAM and a pass transistor by a NVM reduces chip size. And non-volatility reduces the stand-by power. More importantly, the compactness of NVM allows fine-grain logic cells (small cluster size), which advantageously enables a highly efficient cell usage, resulting in compact circuit for applications. In this paper, we investigate the fine-grain cell architecture using atom switch which is one of the NVMs. We evaluate the effect of the cluster size and the segment length on the atom-switch-based RLCA to confirm the optimal point considering area-delay product. Cluster size is optimized to be 4, which is smaller than that in the conventional SRAM- and multiplexer-based RLCA. This optimization is originated from the fact that the inter-delay among clusters is only twice of the intra-delay in cluster for atom-switch-based RLCA with routing block formed by crossbar switches because of very small capacitance and resistance of atom switches. On the other hand, the segment length is optimized to be 4, which is the same as that in the conventional SRAM- and multiplexer-based RLCA.

2015 0.5-V Highly Power-Efficient Programmable Logic using Nonvolatile Configuration Switch in BEOL
abstract
A low-power nonvolatile programmable-logic cell array is proposed for energy-constrained applications such as wireless sensor nodes and mobile apparatuses. A 64x64 programmable-logic cell array includes a 9.2-Mbit nonvolatile switch, namely atom switch, as the routing switch and configuration memory. A 16-bit arithmetic logic unit, which is a building block of the micro-controller unit, was implemented to compare the speed and power consumption with a state-of-the-art low power field-programmable gate array. The proposed programmable-logic array exhibited 30% dynamic power saving and x2.5 faster operation in the low-voltage region. Zero sleep power was also demonstrated.
