MFINet: Multi-view Fusion and 2D-3D Interaction Enhancement for Real-Time LiDAR Semantic SegmentationabstractLiDAR semantic segmentation is a key task in advanced autonomous driving systems. Projection-based methods exhibit real-time potential due to their efficiency, but suffer from inevitable 3D information loss and rely on time-consuming post-processing, limiting overall performance. To address this, we propose MFINet, a real-time semantic segmentation network based on multi-view fusion and 2D-3D interaction enhancement. It adopts a three-branch architecture that integrates 3D Point View (3D-PV), 2D Bird’s Eye View (2D-BEV) and 2D Range View (2D-RV) to make full use of 2D and 3D representation. From 3D to 2D, we design a 3D Point Feature Projector (3DPFP), which injects 3D features into the 2D BEV and RV pseudo-images to retain effective 3D information. From 2D to 3D, a Feature Enhancement (FE) module is designed to leverage the advantages of 2D information in extracting geometric and semantic features. We also introduce a 2D-3D Fusion Head (FH) to aggregate point features from multiple views. Besides, we incorporate a Multi-Scale Dilated Attention (MSDA) module with a sliding window strategy to enhance feature discrimination. Extensive experiments on the SemanticKITTI and NuScenes benchmarks demonstrate that MFINet outperforms existing methods on the SemanticKITTI, NuScenes val set and achieves competitive results on the NuScenes test set. | 2026 | Trajectory Planning Method for Fracture Reduction of Parallel Robots Based on DMP and APFabstractThe operation of tibial fracture reduction is complex and may involve risks of iatrogenic injuries due to fatigue or insufficient experience of the surgeon. Therefore, this paper proposes a tibial fracture reduction trajectory planning method based on dynamic movement primitives (DMP) and artificial potential fields (APF) to avoid the collision between the distal and proximal fracture fragments during the reduction process and to achieve safe tibial fracture reduction. First, DMP is used to learn the motion characteristics from the orientation demonstration trajectory, generating a new orientation trajectory for the distal fracture fragment. Second, DMP with an obstacle avoidance mechanism based on APF is used to learn the motion characteristics from the position demonstration trajectory, generating a position trajectory for the distal fracture fragment with obstacle avoidance capability. Then, the position trajectory and the orientation trajectory are combined synchronously to form the reduction trajectory. Finally the aforementioned trajectory is optimized to minimize both the the sum of squared velocities and the the sum of squared accelerations of all branch chains under specific constraints, enabling the robot to perform a smooth fracture reduction. Simulations and experiments are conducted, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively perform trajectory planning for tibial fracture reduction. The proposed method can provide technical references for the trajectory planning and obstacle avoidance problems of orthopedic robots in unstructured environments. Tingting Su, Nan Ma 0012

Cross-Modal 3D Shape Retrieval via Heterogeneous Dynamic Graph RepresentationabstractCross-modal 3D shape retrieval is a crucial and widely applied task in the field of 3D vision. Its goal is to construct retrieval representations capable of measuring the similarity between instances of different 3D modalities. However, existing methods face challenges due to the performance bottlenecks of single-modal representation extractors and the modality gap across 3D modalities. To tackle these issues, we propose a Heterogeneous Dynamic Graph Representation (HDGR) network, which incorporates context-dependent dynamic relations within a heterogeneous framework. By capturing correlations among diverse 3D objects, HDGR overcomes the limitations of ambiguous representations obtained solely from instances. Within the context of varying mini-batches, dynamic graphs are constructed to capture proximal intra-modal relations, and dynamic bipartite graphs represent implicit cross-modal relations, effectively addressing the two challenges above. Subsequently, message passing and aggregation are performed using Dynamic Graph Convolution (DGConv) and Dynamic Bipartite Graph Convolution (DBConv), enhancing features through heterogeneous dynamic relation learning. Finally, intra-modal, cross-modal, and self-transformed features are redistributed and integrated into a heterogeneous dynamic representation for cross-modal 3D shape retrieval. HDGR establishes a stable, context-enhanced, structure-aware 3D shape representation by capturing heterogeneous inter-object relationships and adapting to varying contextual dynamics. Extensive experiments conducted on the ModelNet10, ModelNet40, and real-world ABO datasets demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance of HDGR in cross-modal and intra-modal retrieval tasks. Moreover, under the supervision of robust loss functions, HDGR achieves remarkable cross-modal retrieval against label noise on the 3D MNIST dataset. The comprehensive experimental results highlight the effectiveness and efficiency of HDGR on cross-modal 3D shape retrieval. Yue Dai 0003, Yifan Feng 0001, Nan Ma 0012, Xibin Zhao, Yue Gao 0002

Exploiting the Complementarity of Bilateral Domains for Fast Lane DetectionabstractLane detection plays a crucial role in the visual perception system of intelligent driving, aiming to rapidly identify various lane lines embedded in complex road scenarios. However, accurately and quickly detecting lane lines remains a challenging task, especially with the limited representation capacity of spatial domain. Using frequency to guide the few-visual-clue lane detection in spatial domain can be a cure, as frequency domain effectively describes sparse lane local contexts from a complementary perspective. To achieve accurate and fast lane detection, we propose a novel network that smoothly introduces frequency space into the spatial domain. We first design two light-weight modules, i.e., the Domain Transformation Module (DTM) and the Bilateral Aggregation Module (BAM), to explicitly perceive lane features with diverse semantics in bilateral domains. Concretely, the DTM excites lane local patterns in frequency space via a parallel sub-convolutions manner, while the BAM selectively absorbs informative components from the intra- and inter-domain perspectives. We then devise a small parametric module, named Position Refinement Module (PRM), to model fine-grained lane locations. It is instantiated into the last three stages of network to reconstruct detailed positional relationships by encoding global semantics and local contexts into unified lane embeddings. Extensive experiments on two widely-used datasets show that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches. Especially, our method achieves a superior inference efficiency of 0.011 second per image along with a total F1score of 79.28% on the CULane dataset. Nan Ma 0012, Guilin Pang, Yiu-Ming Cheung

Autonomous Tomato Harvesting With Top-Down Fusion Network for Limited DataabstractUsing robots for tomato truss harvesting represents a promising approach to agricultural production. However, incomplete acquisition of perception information and clumsy operations often result in low harvest success rates or crop damage. To address this issue, we designed a new method for tomato truss perception, an autonomous harvesting method, and a novel circular rotary cutting end-effector. The robot performs object detection and keypoint detection on tomato trusses using the proposed Top-down Fusion Network, making decisions on suitable targets for harvesting based on phenotyping and pose estimation. The designed end-effector moves gradually from the bottom up to wrap around the tomato truss, cutting the peduncle to complete the harvest. Experiments conducted in real-world scenarios for robotic perception and autonomous harvesting of tomato trusses show that the proposed method increases accuracy by up to 11.42% and 22.29% for complete and limited dataset conditions, compared to baseline models. Furthermore, we have implemented an automatic tomato harvesting system based on TDFNet, which reaches an average harvest success rate of 89.58% in the greenhouse. | 2024 | AHPPEBot: Autonomous Robot for Tomato Harvesting based on Phenotyping and Pose EstimationabstractTo address the limitations inherent to conventional automated harvesting robots specifically their suboptimal success rates and risk of crop damage, we design a novel bot named AHPPEBot which is capable of autonomous harvesting based on crop phenotyping and pose estimation. Specifically, In phenotyping, the detection, association, and maturity estimation of tomato trusses and individual fruits are accomplished through a multi-task YOLOv5 model coupled with a detectionbased adaptive DBScan clustering algorithm. In pose estimation, we employ a deep learning model to predict seven semantic keypoints on the pedicel. These keypoints assist in the robot’s path planning, minimize target contact, and facilitate the use of our specialized end effector for harvesting. In autonomous tomato harvesting experiments conducted in commercial green-houses, our proposed robot achieved a harvesting success rate of 86.67%, with an average successful harvest time of 32.46 s, showcasing its continuous and robust harvesting capabilities. The result underscores the potential of harvesting robots to bridge the labor gap in agriculture. Xingxu Li, Nan Ma 0012, Yiheng Han, Siyi Zheng

FF-LOGO: Cross-Modality Point Cloud Registration with Feature Filtering and Local to Global OptimizationabstractCross-modality point cloud registration is confronted with significant challenges due to inherent differences in modalities between sensors. To deal with this problem, we propose FF-LOGO: a cross-modality point cloud registration framework with Feature Filtering and LOcal-Global Optimization. The cross-modality feature correlation filtering module extracts geometric transformation-invariant features from cross-modality point clouds and achieves point selection by feature matching. We also introduce a cross-modality optimization process, including a local adaptive key region aggregation module and a global modality consistency fusion optimization module. Experimental results demonstrate that our two-stage optimization significantly improves the registration accuracy of the feature association and selection module. Our method achieves a substantial increase in recall rate compared to the current state-of-the-art methods on the 3DCSR dataset, improving from 40.59% to 75.74%. | 2024 | Multi-View Time-Series Hypergraph Neural Network for Action RecognitionabstractRecently, action recognition has attracted considerable attention in the field of computer vision. In dynamic circumstances and complicated backgrounds, there are some problems, such as object occlusion, insufficient light, and weak correlation of human body joints, resulting in skeleton-based human action recognition accuracy being very low. To address this issue, we propose a Multi-View Time-Series Hypergraph Neural Network (MV-TSHGNN) method. The framework is composed of two main parts: the construction of a multi-view time-series hypergraph structure and the learning process of multi-view time-series hypergraph convolutions. Specifically, given the multi-view video sequence frames, we first extract the joint features of actions from different views. Then, limb components and adjacent joints spatial hypergraphs based on the joints of different views at the same time are constructed respectively, temporal hypergraphs are constructed joints of the same view at continuous times, which are established high-order semantic relationships and cooperatively generate complementary action features. After that, we design a multi-view time-series hypergraph neural network to efficiently learn the features of spatial and temporal hypergraphs, and effectively improve the accuracy of skeleton-based action recognition. To evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of MV-TSHGNN, we conduct experiments on NTU RGB+D, NTU RGB+D 120 and imitating traffic police gestures datasets. The experimental results indicate that our proposed method model achieves the new state-of-the-art performance. Nan Ma 0012, Zhixuan Wu, Yifan Feng 0001, Yue Gao 0002

Image-Based Structured Vehicle Behavior Analysis Inspired by Interactive CognitionabstractVehicle behavior analysis has gradually developed by utilizing trajectories and motion features to characterize on-road behavior. However, the existing methods analyze the behavior of each vehicle individually, ignoring the interaction between vehicles. According to the theory of interactive cognition, vehicle-to-vehicle interaction is an indispensable feature for future autonomous driving, just as interaction is universally required for traditional driving. Therefore, we place the vehicle behavior analysis in the context of the vehicle interaction scene, where the self-vehicle should observe the behavior category and degree of the other-vehicle that is about to interact with itself, in order to predict whether the other-vehicle will pass through the intersection first or later, and then decide to pass through or wait. Inspired by the interactive cognition, we develop a general framework of Structured Vehicle Behavior Analysis (StruVBA) and derive a new model of Structured Fully Convolutional Networks (StruFCN). Moreover, both Intersection over Union (IoU) and False Negative Rate (FNR) are adopted to measure the similarity between the predicted behavior degree and the ground truth. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed method achieves higher prediction accuracy than most existing methods, while predicting vehicle behavior with richer visual meaning. In addition, it also provides an example of modeling the interaction between vehicles and a verification for interaction cognition theory as well. | 2023 | Action Recognition and Benchmark Using Event CamerasabstractRecent years have witnessed remarkable achievements in video-based action recognition. Apart from traditional frame-based cameras, event cameras are bio-inspired vision sensors that only record pixel-wise brightness changes rather than the brightness value. However, little effort has been made in event-based action recognition, and large-scale public datasets are also nearly unavailable. In this paper, we propose an event-based action recognition framework calledEV-ACT. The Learnable Multi-Fused Representation (LMFR) is first proposed to integrate multiple event information in a learnable manner. The LMFR with dual temporal granularity is fed into the event-based slow-fast network for the fusion of appearance and motion features. A spatial-temporal attention mechanism is introduced to further enhance the learning capability of action recognition. To prompt research in this direction, we have collected the largest event-based action recognition benchmark namedTHUE-ACT-50and the accompanyingTHUE-ACT-50-CHLdataset under challenging environments, including a total of over 12,830 recordings from 50 action categories, which is over 4 times the size of the previous largest dataset. Experimental results show that our proposed framework could achieve improvements of over 14.5%, 7.6%, 11.2%, and 7.4% compared to previous works on four benchmarks. We have also deployed our proposed EV-ACT framework on a mobile platform to validate its practicality and efficiency. Yue Gao 0002, Jiaxuan Lu, Siqi Li 0001, Nan Ma 0012, Shaoyi Du, Qionghai Dai

Exploring High-Order Spatio-Temporal Correlations From Skeleton for Person Re-IdentificationabstractPerson re- identification (Re-ID) has become a hot research topic due to its widespread applications. Conducting person Re-ID in video sequences is a practical requirement, in which the crucial challenge is how to pursue a robust video representation based on spatial and temporal features. However, most of the previous methods only consider how to integrate part-level features in the spatio-temporal range, while how to model and generate the part-correlations is little exploited. In this paper, we propose a skeleton-based dynamic hypergraph framework, namely Skeletal Temporal Dynamic Hypergraph Neural Network (ST-DHGNN) for person Re-ID, which resorts to modeling the high-order correlations among various body parts based on a time series of skeletal information. Specifically, multi-shape and multi-scale patches are heuristically cropped from feature maps, constituting spatial representations in different frames. A joint-centered hypergraph and a bone-centered hypergraph are constructed in parallel from multiple body parts (i.e., head, trunk, and legs) with spatio-temporal multi-granularity in the entire video sequence, in which the graph vertices representing regional features and hyperedges denoting relationships. Dynamic hypergraph propagation containing the re- planning module and the hyperedge elimination module is proposed to better integrate features among vertices. Feature aggregation and attention mechanisms are also adopted to obtain a better video representation for person Re-ID. Experiments show that the proposed method performs significantly better than the state-of-the-art on three video-based person Re-ID datasets, including iLIDS-VID, PRID-2011, and MARS. | 2022 | Fast-HBNet: Hybrid Branch Network for Fast Lane DetectionabstractAs one of the fundamental visual tasks in the unmanned driving area, lane detection attracts increasing attention. In practical applications, lane points are very difficult to localize because they usually appear to be sparse and incomplete due to the influence of illumination and environment. Conventional lane detection methods rely on coarse features and carefully designed postprocessing to detect the lane lines. However, these methods are usually slow, and the stability and generalization ability are unsatisfactory. In this paper, we propose a novel lane detection network – Fast-HBNet(Fast-Hybrid Branch Network), which exploits both global semantic information and spatial contexts. To enlarge receptive fields and encode more detailed information, the compound transformation is employed and the proposed hybrid branch network extracts four diverse feature maps with different receptive fields and spatial contexts. Besides, we design a Hierarchical Feature Learning (HFL) module to learn lane features from the scale, channel, and spatial levels to enhance the generalization ability of our detector. These features are further selectively coalesced to generate unified lane feature maps with large receptive fields and rich detailed information. In other words, our network can encode the global semantic information from the high-resolution feature maps and the fine-grained details in the low-resolution feature maps. Experimental results conducted on the TuSimple (2017) and CULane [Panet al.(2018)] datasets demonstrate that the proposed Fast-HBNet outperforms numerous state-of-the-art lane detectors in both speed and accuracy. Particularly, Fast-HBNet achieves an accuracy of 96.88% on the TuSimple dataset at a speed of 76 FPS. Guilin Pang, Baopeng Zhang, Zhu Teng, Nan Ma 0012, Jianping Fan 0001

| 2019 | Hypergraph-Induced Convolutional Networks for Visual ClassificationabstractAt present, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have become popular in visual classification tasks because of their superior performance. However, CNN-based methods do not consider the correlation of visual data to be classified. Recently, graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have mitigated this problem by modeling the pairwise relationship in visual data. Real-world tasks of visual classification typically must address numerous complex relationships in the data, which are not fit for the modeling of the graph structure using GCNs. Therefore, it is vital to explore the underlying correlation of visual data. Regarding this issue, we propose a framework called the hypergraph-induced convolutional network to explore the high-order correlation in visual data during deep neural networks. First, a hypergraph structure is constructed to formulate the relationship in visual data. Then, the high-order correlation is optimized by a learning process based on the constructed hypergraph. The classification tasks are performed by considering the high-order correlation in the data. Thus, the convolution of the hypergraph-induced convolutional network is based on the corresponding high-order relationship, and the optimization on the network uses each data and considers the high-order correlation of the data. To evaluate the proposed hypergraph-induced convolutional network framework, we have conducted experiments on three visual data sets: the National Taiwan University 3-D model data set, Princeton Shape Benchmark, and multiview RGB-depth object data set. The experimental results and comparison in all data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed hypergraph-induced convolutional network compared with the state-of-the-art methods.
