| 2025 | Coherent 3D Portrait Video Reconstruction via Triplane FusionabstractRecent breakthroughs in single-image 3D portrait reconstruction have enabled telepresence systems to stream 3D portrait videos from a single camera in real-time, democratizing telepresence. However, per-frame 3D reconstruction exhibits temporal inconsistency and forgets the user’s appearance. On the other hand, self-reenactment methods can render coherent 3D portraits by driving a 3D avatar built from a single reference image but fail to faithfully preserve the user’s per-frame appearance (e.g., instantaneous facial expressions and lighting). As a result, neither of these two frameworks is an ideal solution for democratized 3D telepresence. In this work, we address this dilemma and propose a novel solution that maintains both coherent identity and dynamic per-frame appearance to enable the best possible realism. To this end, we propose a new fusion-based method that takes the best of both worlds by fusing a canonical 3D prior from a reference view with dynamic appearance from per-frame input views, producing temporally stable 3D videos with faithful reconstruction of the user’s per-frame appearance. Trained only using synthetic data produced by an expression-conditioned 3D GAN, our encoder-based method achieves both state-of-the-art 3D reconstruction and temporal consistency on in-studio and in-the-wild datasets. | 2025 | BLADE: Single-view Body Mesh Estimation through Accurate Depth EstimationabstractSingle-Image human mesh recovery is a challenging task due to the ill-posed nature of simultaneous body shape, pose, and camera estimation. Existing estimators work well on images taken from afar, but they break down as the person moves close to the camera. Moreover, current methods fail to achieve both accurate 3D pose and 2D alignment at the same time. Error is mainly introduced by inaccurate perspective projection heuristically derived from orthographic parameters. To resolve this long-standing challenge, we present our method BLADE which accurately recovers perspective parameters from a single image without heuristic assumptions. We start from the inverse relationship between perspective distortion and the person’s Z-translation Tz, and we show that Tzcan be reliably estimated from the image. We then discuss the important role of Tzfor accurate human mesh recovery estimated from closerange images. Finally, we show that, once Tzand the 3D human mesh are estimated, one can accurately recover the focal length and full 3D translation. Extensive experiments on standard benchmarks and real-world close-range images show that our method accurately recovers projection parameters from a single image, and consequently attains state-of-the-art accuracy on both 3D pose estimation and 2D alignment for a wide range of images. | 2025 | My3DGen: A Scalable Personalized 3D Generative ModelabstractIn recent years, generative 3D face models (e.g., EG3D) have been developed to tackle the problem of synthesizing photo-realistic faces. However, these models are often unable to capture facial features unique to each individual, highlighting the importance of personalization. Some prior works have shown promise in personalizing generative face models, but these studies primarily focus on 2D settings. Also, these methods require both fine-tuning and storing a large number of parameters for each user, posing a hindrance to achieving scalable personalization. Another challenge of personalization is the limited number of training images available for each individual, which often leads to overfitting when using full fine-tuning methods. Our proposed approach, My3DGen, generates a personalized 3D prior of an individual using as few as 50 training images. My3DGen allows for novel view synthesis, semantic editing of a given face (e.g. adding a smile), and synthesizing novel appearances, all while preserving the original person's identity. We decouple the 3D facial features into global features and personalized features by freezing the pre-trained EG3D and training additional personalized weights through low-rank decomposition. As a result, My3DGen introduces only 240K personalized parameters per individual, leading to a 127× reduction in trainable parameters compared to the 30.6M required for fine-tuning the entire parameter space. Despite this significant reduction in storage, our model preserves identity features without compromising the quality of downstream applications, both quantitatively and qualitatively. | 2025 | Multimodal Neural Acoustic Fields for Immersive Mixed RealityabstractWe introduce multimodal neural acoustic fields for synthesizing spatial sound and enabling the creation of immersive auditory experiences from novel viewpoints and in completely unseen new environments, both virtual and real. Extending the concept of neural radiance fields to acoustics, we develop a neural network-based model that maps an environment's geometric and visual features to its audio characteristics. Specifically, we introduce a novel hybrid transformer-convolutional neural network to accomplish two core tasks: capturing the reverberation characteristics of a scene from audio-visual data, and generating spatial sound in an unseen new environment from signals recorded at sparse positions and orientations within the original scene. By learning to represent spatial acoustics in a given environment, our approach enables creation of realistic immersive auditory experiences, thereby enhancing the sense of presence in augmented and virtual reality applications. We validate the proposed approach on both synthetic and real-world visual-acoustic data and demonstrate that our method produces nonlinear acoustic effects such as reverberations, and improves spatial audio quality compared to existing methods. Furthermore, we also conduct subjective user studies and demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly improves audio perception in immersive mixed reality applications. | 2025 | Learning View Synthesis for Desktop Telepresence With Few RGBD CamerasabstractRecent telepresence systems have shown significant improvements in quality compared to prior systems. However, they struggle to achieve both low cost and high quality at the same time. In this work, we envision a future where telepresence systems become a commodity and can be installed on typical desktops. To this end, we present a high-quality view synthesis method that uses a cost-effective capture system that consists of commodity hardware accessible to the general public. We propose a neural renderer that uses a few RGBD cameras as input to synthesize novel views of a user and their surroundings. At the core of the renderer is Multi-Layer Point Cloud (MPC), a novel 3D representation that improves reconstruction accuracy by removing non-linear biases in depth cameras. Our temporally-aware renderer further improves the stability of synthesized videos by conditioning on past information. Additionally, we propose Spatial Skip Connections (SSC) to improve image upsampling under limited GPU memory. Experimental results show that our renderer outperforms recent methods in terms of view synthesis quality. Our method generalizes to new users and challenging content (e.g. hand gestures and clothing deformation) without costly per-video optimization, object templates, or heavy pre-processing. The code and dataset will be made available. Shengze Wang 0002, Ryan Schmelzle, Liujie Zheng, Youngjoong Kwon, Roni Sengupta, Henry Fuchs |

| 2022 | EDPLVO: Efficient Direct Point-Line Visual OdometryabstractThis paper introduces an efficient direct visual odometry (VO) algorithm using points and lines. Pixels on lines are generally adopted in direct methods. However, the original photometric error is only defined for points. It seems difficult to extend it to lines. In previous works, the collinear constraints for points on lines are either ignored [1] or introduce heavy computational load into the resulting optimization system [2]. This paper extends the photometric error for lines. We prove that the 3D points of the points on a 2D line are determined by the inverse depths of the endpoints of the 2D line, and derive a closed-form solution for this problem. This property can significantly reduce the number of variables to speed up the optimization, and can make the collinear constraint exactly satisfied. Furthermore, we introduce a two-step method to further accelerate the optimization, and prove the convergence of this method. The experimental results show that our algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art direct VO algorithms. Lipu Zhou, Guoquan Huang 0003, Yinian Mao, Shengze Wang 0002, Michael Kaess |

| 2021 | π-LSAM: LiDAR Smoothing and Mapping With PlanesabstractThis paper introduces a real-time dense planar LiDAR SLAM system, named π-LSAM, for the indoor environment. The widely used LiDAR odometry and mapping (LOAM) framework [1] does not include bundle adjustment (BA) and generates a low fidelity tracking pose. This paper seeks to overcome these drawbacks for the indoor environment. Specifically, we use the plane as the landmark, and introduce plane adjustment (PA) as our back-end to jointly optimize planes and keyframe poses. We present the π-factor to significantly reduce the computational complexity of PA. In addition, we introduce an efficient loop detection algorithm based on the RANSAC framework using planes. In the front-end, our algorithm performs global registration in real time. To achieve this performance, we maintain the local-to-global point-to-plane correspondences scan by scan, so that we only need a small local KD-tree to establish the data association between a LiDAR scan and the global planes, rather than a large global KD-tree used in previous works. With this local-to-global data association, our algorithm directly identifies planes in a LiDAR scan, and yields an accurate and globally consistent pose. Experimental results show that our algorithm significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art LOAM variant, LeGO-LOAM [2], and our algorithm achieves real time. | 2020 | A Fast and Accurate Solution for Pose Estimation from 3D CorrespondencesabstractEstimating pose from given 3D correspondences, including point-to-point, point-to-line and point-to-plane correspondences, is a fundamental task in computer vision with many applications. We present a fast and accurate solution for the least-squares problem of this task. Previous works mainly focus on studying the way to find the global minimizer of the least-squares problem. However, existing works that show the ability to achieve the global minimizer are still unsuitable for real-time applications. Furthermore, as one of contributions of this paper, we prove that there exist ambiguous configurations for any number of lines and planes. These configurations have several solutions in theory, which makes the correct solution may come from a local minimizer when the data are with noise. Previous works based on convex optimization which is unable to find local minimizers do not work in the ambiguous configuration. Our algorithm is efficient and able to reveal local minimizers. We employ the Cayley-Gibbs-Rodriguez (CGR) parameterization of the rotation to derive a general rational cost for the three cases of 3D correspondences. The main contribution of this paper is to solve the first-order optimality conditions of the least-squares problem, which are of a complicated rational form. The central idea of our algorithm is to introduce some intermediate unknowns to simplify the problem. Extensive experimental results show that our algorithm is more stable than previous algorithms when the number N of correspondences is small. Besides, when N is large, our algorithm achieves the same accuracy as the state-of-the-art algorithm [1], but our algorithm is about 7 times faster than [1] in real applications.
