2023 Rethinking Feature-based Knowledge Distillation for Face Recognition
abstract
With the continual expansion of face datasets, feature-based distillation prevails for large-scale face recognition. In this work, we attempt to remove identity supervision in student training, to spare the GPU memory from saving massive class centers. However, this naive removal leads to inferior distillation result. We carefully inspect the performance degradation from the perspective of intrinsic dimension, and argue that the gap in intrinsic dimension, namely the intrinsic gap, is intimately connected to the infamous capacity gap problem. By constraining the teacher's search space with reverse distillation, we narrow the intrinsic gap and unleash the potential of feature-only distillation. Remarkably, the proposed reverse distillation creates universally student-friendly teacher that demonstrates outstanding student improvement. We further enhance its effectiveness by designing a student proxy to better bridge the intrinsic gap. As a result, the proposed method surpasses state-of-the-art distillation techniques with identity supervision on various face recognition benchmarks, and the improvements are consistent across different teacher-student pairs.

2023 CORE: Co-planarity Regularized Monocular Geometry Estimation with Weak Supervision
abstract
The ill-posed nature of monocular 3D geometry (depth map and surface normals) estimation makes it rely mostly on data-driven approaches such as Deep Neural Networks (DNN). However, data acquisition of surface normals, especially the reliable normals, is acknowledged difficult. Commonly, reconstruction of surface normals with high quality is heuristic and time-consuming. Such fact urges methodologies to minimize dependency on ground-truth normals when predicting 3D geometry. In this work, we devise CO-planarity REgularized (CORE) loss functions and Structure-Aware Normal Estimator (SANE). Without involving any knowledge of ground-truth normals, these two designs enable pixel-wise 3D geometry estimation weakly supervised by only ground-truth depth map. For CORE loss functions, the key idea is to exploit locally linear depth-normal orthogonality under spherical coordinates as pixel-level constraints, and utilize our designed Adaptive Polar Regularization (APR) to resolve underlying numerical degeneracies. Meanwhile, SANE easily establishes multi-task learning with CORE loss functions on both depth and surface normal estimation, leading to the whole performance leap. Extensive experiments present the effectiveness of our method on various DNN architectures and data benchmarks. The experimental results demonstrate that our depth estimation achieves the state-of-the-art performance across all metrics on indoor scenes and comparable performance on outdoor scenes. In addition, our surface normal estimation is overall superior.

2022 Towards Accurate Facial Landmark Detection via Cascaded Transformers
abstract
Accurate facial landmarks are essential prerequisites for many tasks related to human faces. In this paper, an accurate facial landmark detector is proposed based on cascaded transformers. We formulate facial landmark detection as a coordinate regression task such that the model can be trained end-to-end. With self-attention in transformers, our model can inherently exploit the structured relationships between landmarks, which would benefit landmark detection under challenging conditions such as large pose and occlusion. During cascaded refinement, our model is able to extract the most relevant image features around the target landmark for coordinate prediction, based on deformable attention mechanism, thus bringing more accurate alignment. In addition, we propose a novel decoder that refines image features and landmark positions simultaneously. With few parameter increasing, the detection performance improves further. Our model achieves new state-of-the-art performance on several standard facial landmark detection benchmarks, and shows good generalization ability in cross-dataset evaluation.

2022 Pushing the Performance Limit of Scene Text Recognizer without Human Annotation
abstract
Scene text recognition (STR) attracts much attention over the years because of its wide application. Most methods train STR model in a fully supervised manner which requires large amounts of labeled data. Although synthetic data contributes a lot to STR, it suffers from the real-to-synthetic domain gap the restricts model performance. In this work, we aim to boost STR models by leveraging both synthetic data and the numerous real unlabeled images, exempting human annotation cost thoroughly. A robust con-sistency regularization based semi-supervised framework is proposed for STR, which can effectively solve the instability issue due to domain inconsistency between synthetic and real images. A character-level consistency regularization is designed to mitigate the misalignment between characters in sequence recognition. Extensive experiments on standard text recognition benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. It can steadily improve existing STR models, and boost an STR model to achieve new state-of-the-art results. To our best knowledge, this is the first consistency regularization based framework that applies successfully to STR.

2022 Structured Multimodal Attentions for TextVQA
abstract
Text based Visual Question Answering (TextVQA) is a recently raised challenge requiring models to read text in images and answer natural language questions by jointly reasoning over the question, textual information and visual content. Introduction of this new modality - Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tokens ushers in demanding reasoning requirements. Most of the state-of-the-art (SoTA) VQA methods fail when answer these questions because of three reasons: (1) poor text reading ability; (2) lack of textual-visual reasoning capacity; and (3) choosing discriminative answering mechanism over generative couterpart (although this has been further addressed by M4C). In this paper, we propose an end-to-end structured multimodal attention (SMA) neural network to mainly solve the first two issues above. SMA first uses a structural graph representation to encode the object-object, object-text and text-text relationships appearing in the image, and then designs a multimodal graph attention network to reason over it. Finally, the outputs from the above modules are processed by a global-local attentional answering module to produce an answer splicing together tokens from both OCR and general vocabulary iteratively by following M4C. Our proposed model outperforms the SoTA models on TextVQA dataset and two tasks of ST-VQA dataset among all models except pre-training based TAP. Demonstrating strong reasoning ability, it also won first place in TextVQA Challenge 2020. We extensively test different OCR methods on several reasoning models and investigate the impact of gradually increased OCR performance on TextVQA benchmark. With better OCR results, different models share dramatic improvement over the VQA accuracy, but our model benefits most blessed by strong textual-visual reasoning ability. To grant our method an upper bound and make a fair testing base available for further works, we also provide human-annotated ground-truth OCR annotations for the TextVQA dataset, which were not given in the original release. The code and ground-truth OCR annotations for the TextVQA dataset are available at https://github.com/ChenyuGAO-CS/SMA.

2022 Towards End-to-End Text Spotting in Natural Scenes
abstract
Text spotting in natural scene images is of great importance for many image understanding tasks. It includes two sub-tasks: text detection and recognition. In this work, we propose a unified network that simultaneously localizes and recognizes text with a single forward pass, avoiding intermediate processes such as image cropping and feature re-calculation, word separation, and character grouping. The overall framework is trained end-to-end and is able to spot text of arbitrary shapes. The convolutional features are calculated only once and shared by both the detection and recognition modules. Through multi-task training, the learned features become more discriminative and improve the overall performance. By employing a 2D attention model in word recognition, the issue of text irregularity is robustly addressed. The attention model provides the spatial location for each character, which not only helps local feature extraction in word recognition, but also indicates an orientation angle to refine text localization. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on several commonly used text spotting benchmarks, including both regular and irregular datasets. Extensive ablation experiments are performed to verify the effectiveness of each module design.

2021 Where to Look and How to Describe: Fashion Image Retrieval With an Attentional Heterogeneous Bilinear Network
abstract
Fashion products typically feature in compositions of a variety of styles at different clothing parts. In order to distinguish images of different fashion products, we need to extract both appearance (i.e., “how to describe”) and localization (i.e., “where to look”) information, and their interactions. To this end, we propose a biologically inspired framework for image-based fashion product retrieval, which mimics the hypothesized two-stream visual processing system of human brain. The proposed attentional heterogeneous bilinear network (AHBN) consists of two branches: a deep CNN branch to extract fine-grained appearance attributes and a fully convolutional branch to extract landmark localization information. A joint channel-wise attention mechanism is further applied to the extracted heterogeneous features to focus on important channels, followed by a compact bilinear pooling layer to model the interaction of the two streams. Our proposed framework achieves satisfactory performance on three image-based fashion product retrieval benchmarks.

2021 A Robust Attentional Framework for License Plate Recognition in the Wild
abstract
Recognizing car license plates in natural scene images is an important yet still challenging task in realistic applications. Many existing approaches perform well for license plates collected under constrained conditions,e.g., shooting in frontal and horizontal view-angles and under good lighting conditions. However, their performance drops significantly in an unconstrained environment that features rotation, distortion, occlusion, blurring, shading or extreme dark or bright conditions. In this work, we propose a robust framework for license plate recognition in the wild. It is composed of a tailored CycleGAN model for license plate image generation and an elaborate designed image-to-sequence network for plate recognition. On one hand, the CycleGAN based plate generation engine alleviates the exhausting human annotation work. Massive amount of training data can be obtained with a more balanced character distribution and various shooting conditions, which helps to boost the recognition accuracy to a large extent. On the other hand, the 2D attentional based license plate recognizer with an Xception-based CNN encoder is capable of recognizing license plates with different patterns under various scenarios accurately and robustly. Without using any heuristics rule or post-processing, our method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on four public datasets, which demonstrates the generality and robustness of our framework. Moreover, we released a new license plate dataset, named “CLPD”, with 1200 images from all 31 provinces in mainland China. The dataset can be available from:https://github.com/wangpengnorman/CLPD_dataset.

2020 Give Me Something to Eat: Referring Expression Comprehension with Commonsense Knowledge
abstract
Conventional referring expression comprehension (REF) assumes people to query something from an image by describing its visual appearance and spatial location, but in practice, we often ask for an object by describing its affordance or other non-visual attributes, especially when we do not have a precise target. For example, sometimes we say 'Give me something to eat'. In this case, we need to use commonsense knowledge to identify the objects in the image. Unfortunately, there is no existing referring expression dataset reflecting this requirement, not to mention a model to tackle this challenge. In this paper, we collect a new referring expression dataset, called KB-Ref, containing $43$k expressions on 16k images. In KB-Ref, to answer each expression (detect the target object referred by the expression), at least one piece of commonsense knowledge must be required. We then test state-of-the-art (SoTA) REF models on KB-Ref, finding that all of them present a large drop compared to their outstanding performance on general REF datasets. We also present an expression conditioned image and fact attention (ECIFA) network that extracts information from correlated image regions and commonsense knowledge facts. Our method leads to a significant improvement over SoTA REF models, although there is still a gap between this strong baseline and human performance. The dataset and baseline models are available at: https://github.com/wangpengnorman/KB-Ref_dataset.

2019 Show, Attend and Read: A Simple and Strong Baseline for Irregular Text Recognition
abstract
Recognizing irregular text in natural scene images is challenging due to the large variance in text appearance, such as curvature, orientation and distortion. Most existing approaches rely heavily on sophisticated model designs and/or extra fine-grained annotations, which, to some extent, increase the difficulty in algorithm implementation and data collection. In this work, we propose an easy-to-implement strong baseline for irregular scene text recognition, using offthe-shelf neural network components and only word-level annotations. It is composed of a 31-layer ResNet, an LSTMbased encoder-decoder framework and a 2-dimensional attention module. Despite its simplicity, the proposed method is robust. It achieves state-of-the-art performance on irregular text recognition benchmarks and comparable results on regular text datasets. The code will be released.

2019 Visual Question Answering as Reading Comprehension
abstract
Visual question answering (VQA) demands simultaneous comprehension of both the image visual content and natural language questions. In some cases, the reasoning needs the help of common sense or general knowledge which usually appear in the form of text. Current methods jointly embed both the visual information and the textual feature into the same space. Nevertheless, how to model the complex interactions between the two different modalities is not an easy work. In contrast to struggling on multimodal feature fusion, in this paper, we propose to unify all the input information by natural language so as to convert VQA into a machine reading comprehension problem. With this transformation, our method not only can tackle VQA datasets that focus on observation based questions, but can also be naturally extended to handle knowledge-based VQA which requires to explore large-scale external knowledge base. It is a step towards being able to exploit large volumes of text and natural language processing techniques to address VQA problem. Two types of models are proposed to deal with open-ended VQA and multiple-choice VQA respectively. We evaluate our models on three VQA benchmarks. The comparable performance with the state-of-the-art demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2019 Toward End-to-End Car License Plate Detection and Recognition With Deep Neural Networks
abstract
In this paper, we tackle the problem of car license plate detection and recognition in natural scene images. We propose a unified deep neural network, which can localize license plates and recognize the letters simultaneously in a single forward pass. The whole network can be trained end-to-end. In contrast to existing approaches which take license plate detection and recognition as two separate tasks and settle them step by step, our method jointly solves these two tasks by a single network. It not only avoids intermediate error accumulation but also accelerates the processing speed. For performance evaluation, four data sets including images captured from various scenes under different conditions are tested. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness and the efficiency of our proposed approach.

2017 Towards End-to-End Text Spotting with Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks
abstract
In this work, we jointly address the problem of text detection and recognition in natural scene images based on convolutional recurrent neural networks. We propose a unified network that simultaneously localizes and recognizes text with a single forward pass, avoiding intermediate processes, such as image cropping, feature re-calculation, word separation, and character grouping. In contrast to existing approaches that consider text detection and recognition as two distinct tasks and tackle them one by one, the proposed framework settles these two tasks concurrently. The whole framework can be trained end-to-end, requiring only images, ground-truth bounding boxes and text labels. The convolutional features are calculated only once and shared by both detection and recognition, which saves processing time. Through multi-task training, the learned features become more informative and improves the overall performance. Our proposed method has achieved competitive performance on several benchmark datasets.

2015 Worst Case Linear Discriminant Analysis as Scalable Semidefinite Feasibility Problems
abstract
In this paper, we propose an efficient semidefinite programming (SDP) approach to worst case linear discriminant analysis (WLDA). Compared with the traditional LDA, WLDA considers the dimensionality reduction problem from the worst case viewpoint, which is in general more robust for classification. However, the original problem of WLDA is non-convex and difficult to optimize. In this paper, we reformulate the optimization problem of WLDA into a sequence of semidefinite feasibility problems. To efficiently solve the semidefinite feasibility problems, we design a new scalable optimization method with a quasi-Newton method and eigen-decomposition being the core components. The proposed method is orders of magnitude faster than standard interior-point SDP solvers. Experiments on a variety of classification problems demonstrate that our approach achieves better performance than standard LDA. Our method is also much faster and more scalable than standard interior-point SDP solvers-based WLDA. The computational complexity for an SDP with m constraints and matrices of size d by d is roughly reduced from O(m(3)+md(3)+m(2)d(2)) to O(d(3)) (m>d in our case).
