| 2013 | Multiple threads and parallel challenges for large simulations to accelerate a general Navier-Stokes CFD code on massively parallel systemsabstractSUMMARY Computational fluid dynamics is an increasingly important application domain for computational scientists. In this paper, we propose and analyze optimizations necessary to run CFD simulations consisting of multibillion‐cell mesh models on large processor systems. Our investigation leverages the general industrial Navier–Stokes CFD application, Code_Saturne, developed by Electricité de France for incompressible and nearly compressible flows. In this paper, we outline the main bottlenecks and challenges for massively parallel systems and emerging processor features such as many‐core, transactional memory, and thread level speculation. We also present an approach based on an octree search algorithm to facilitate the joining of mesh parts and to build complex larger unstructured meshes of several billion grid cells. We describe two parallel strategies of an algebraic multigrid solver and we detail how to introduce new levels of parallelism based on compiler directives with OpenMP, transactional memory and thread level speculation, for finite volume cell‐centered formulation and face‐based loops. A renumbering scheme for mesh faces is proposed to enhance thread‐level parallelism. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. | 2012 | Toward real-time modeling of human heart ventricles at cellular resolution: simulation of drug-induced arrhythmiasabstractWe have developed a highly efficient and scalable cardiac electrophysiology simulation capability that supports groundbreaking resolution and detail to elucidate the mechanisms of sudden cardiac death from arrhythmia. We can simulate thousands of heartbeats at a resolution of 0.1 mm, comparable to the size of cardiac cells, thereby enabling scientific inquiry not previously possible. Based on scaling results from the partially deployed Sequoia IBM Blue Gene/Q machine at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and planned optimizations, we estimate that by SC12 we will simulate 8 -- 10 heartbeats per minute -- a time-to-solution 400 -- 500 times faster than the state-of-the-art. Performance between 8 and 11 PFlop/s on the full 1,572,864 cores is anticipated, representing 40 -- 55 percent of peak. The power of the model is demonstrated by illuminating the subtle arrhythmogenic mechanisms of anti-arrhythmic drugs that paradoxically increase arrhythmias in some patient populations. Arthur A. | 2010 | Accelerating Computational Fluid Dynamics on the IBM Blue Gene/P SupercomputerabstractComputational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an increasingly important application domain for computational scientists. In this paper, we propose and analyze optimizations necessary to run CFD simulations consisting of multi-billion-cell mesh models on large processor systems. Our investigation leverages the general industrial Navier-Stokes open-source CFD application, Code_Saturne, developed by Electricité de France (EDF). Our work considers emerging processor features such as many-core, Symmetric Multi-threading (SMT), Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD), Transactional Memory, and Thread Level Speculation. Initially, we have targeted per-node performance improvements by reconstructing the code and data layouts to optimally use multiple threads. We present a general loop transformation that will enable the compiler to generate OpenMP threads effectively with minimal impact to overall code structure. A renumbering scheme for mesh faces is proposed to enhance thread-level parallelism and generally improve data locality. Performance results on IBM Blue Gene/P supercomputer and Intel Xeon Westmere cluster are included. Pascal Vezolle, Jerry Heyman, Bruce D'Amora, Gordon W. Braudaway, Karen A. | 2007 | Interconnects in the Third Dimension: Design Challenges for 3D ICsabstractDespite generation upon generation of scaling, computer chips have until now remained essentially 2-dimensional. Improvements in on-chip wire delay and in the maximum number of I/O per chip have not been able to keep up with transistor performance growth; it has become steadily harder to hide the discrepancy. 3D chip technologies come in a number of flavors, but are expected to enable the extension of CMOS performance. Designing in three dimensions, however, forces the industry to look at formerly-two- dimensional integration issues quite differently, and requires the re-fitting of multiple existing EDA capabilities. | 2005 | Status and Direction of Communication Technologies - SiGe BiCMOS and RFCMOSabstractWe present the status and direction of silicon semiconductor technologies targeted for applications such as wireless, networking, instrumentation, and storage markets. Various technological aspects for multiple branches of RF foundry technologies that are based on the standard foundry compatible CMOS node are discussed - SiGe BiCMOS HP ("high performance") tailored to high-frequency applications, SiGe BiCMOS WL ("cost performance") tailored to wireless/storage applications, and RF-CMOS optimized for low-cost consumer applications. Future opportunities and challenges for advancement in RF technologies are described in light of CMOS and SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor scaling. In addition, we discuss the maturity of SiGe BiCMOS by looking at the levels of integration and manufacturability. Alvin J. Joseph, David L. Harame, Basanth Jagannathan, Douglas D.
