2022 Resource-Aware Classification via Model Management Enabled Data Stream Optimization
abstract
The integration of machine learning (ML) approaches in sensor-based applications in the field of pervasive computing is becoming increasingly prominent due to the increasing number of sensor-based applications in general and the continuous adaption of ML approaches to new domains. Several ML models are used within a processing pipeline that operates on the same sensor data. Still, the cloud computing approach is a straightforward solution where all sensor data is sent to the cloud before processing, which is inefficient according to resource utilization. Appropriate management of the different processing tasks for ML models enhances resource utilization. This paper proposes an architecture for resource-aware classification empowered by an ML model management (MLMM) framework and a distributed data stream management system (DDSMS). First, the classification pipeline is decomposed and implemented as data stream operators. Second, ML models are retrieved from an MLMM framework considering preprocessing, segmentation, and feature alignment to enable an effective redundancy elimination. Finally, the classification pipeline is deployed using resource-aware operator placement optimization. The evaluation results on a real-world scenario of a sensor-based activity classification pipeline for dairy cows show that our approach can reduce network utilization up to 98.9%.

2015 Quantification of Diabetes Comorbidity Risks across Life Using Nation-Wide Big Claims Data
abstract
Despite substantial progress in the study of diabetes, important questions remain about its comorbidities and clinical heterogeneity. To explore these issues, we develop a framework allowing for the first time to quantify nation-wide risks and their age- and sex-dependence for each diabetic comorbidity, and whether the association may be consequential or causal, in a sample of almost two million patients. This study is equivalent to nearly 40,000 single clinical measurements. We confirm the highly controversial relation of increased risk for Parkinson's disease in diabetics, using a 10 times larger cohort than previous studies on this relation. Detection of type 1 diabetes leads detection of depressions, whereas there is a strong comorbidity relation between type 2 diabetes and schizophrenia, suggesting similar pathogenic or medication-related mechanisms. We find significant sex differences in the progression of, for instance, sleep disorders and congestive heart failure in diabetic patients. Hypertension is a highly sex-sensitive comorbidity with females being at lower risk during fertile age, but at higher risk otherwise. These results may be useful to improve screening practices in the general population. Clinical management of diabetes must address age- and sex-dependence of multiple comorbid conditions.

2009 A fast and efficient gene-network reconstruction method from multiple over-expression experiments
abstract
BACKGROUND: Reverse engineering of gene regulatory networks presents one of the big challenges in systems biology. Gene regulatory networks are usually inferred from a set of single-gene over-expressions and/or knockout experiments. Functional relationships between genes are retrieved either from the steady state gene expressions or from respective time series. RESULTS: We present a novel algorithm for gene network reconstruction on the basis of steady-state gene-chip data from over-expression experiments. The algorithm is based on a straight forward solution of a linear gene-dynamics equation, where experimental data is fed in as a first predictor for the solution. We compare the algorithm's performance with the NIR algorithm, both on the well known E. coli experimental data and on in-silico experiments. CONCLUSION: We show superiority of the proposed algorithm in the number of correctly reconstructed links and discuss computational time and robustness. The proposed algorithm is not limited by combinatorial explosion problems and can be used in principle for large networks.
