2024 Single-Image-Based Deep Learning for Segmentation of Early Esophageal Cancer Lesions
abstract
Accurate segmentation of lesions is crucial for diagnosis and treatment of early esophageal cancer (EEC). However, neither traditional nor deep learning-based methods up to today can meet the clinical requirements, with the mean Dice score - the most important metric in medical image analysis - hardly exceeding 0.75. In this paper, we present a novel deep learning approach for segmenting EEC lesions. Our method stands out for its uniqueness, as it relies solely on a single input image from a patient, forming the so-called "You-Only-Have-One" (YOHO) framework. On one hand, this "one-image-one-network" learning ensures complete patient privacy as it does not use any images from other patients as the training data. On the other hand, it avoids nearly all generalization-related problems since each trained network is applied only to the same input image itself. In particular, we can push the training to "over-fitting" as much as possible to increase the segmentation accuracy. Our technical details include an interaction with clinical doctors to utilize their expertise, a geometry-based data augmentation over a single lesion image to generate the training dataset (the biggest novelty), and an edge-enhanced UNet. We have evaluated YOHO over an EEC dataset collected by ourselves and achieved a mean Dice score of 0.888, which is much higher as compared to the existing deep-learning methods, thus representing a significant advance toward clinical applications. The code and dataset are available at: https://github.com/lhaippp/YOHO.

2016 Automatic Hookworm Detection in Wireless Capsule Endoscopy Images
abstract
Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) has become a widely used diagnostic technique to examine inflammatory bowel diseases and disorders. As one of the most common human helminths, hookworm is a kind of small tubular structure with grayish white or pinkish semi-transparent body, which is with a number of 600 million people infection around the world. Automatic hookworm detection is a challenging task due to poor quality of images, presence of extraneous matters, complex structure of gastrointestinal, and diverse appearances in terms of color and texture. This is the first few works to comprehensively explore the automatic hookworm detection for WCE images. To capture the properties of hookworms, the multi scale dual matched filter is first applied to detect the location of tubular structure. Piecewise parallel region detection method is then proposed to identify the potential regions having hookworm bodies. To discriminate the unique visual features for different components of gastrointestinal, the histogram of average intensity is proposed to represent their properties. In order to deal with the problem of imbalance data, Rusboost is deployed to classify WCE images. Experiments on a diverse and large scale dataset with 440 K WCE images demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves a promising performance and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, the high sensitivity in detecting hookworms indicates the potential of our approach for future clinical application.

2011 Adaptive Denoising by Singular Value Decomposition
abstract
This letter presents an adaptive denoising method based on the singular value decomposition (SVD). By incorporating a global subspace analysis into the scheme of local basis selection, the problems of previous adaptive methods are effectively tackled. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves outstanding preservation of image details, and at high noise levels it provides improvements in both objective and subjective quality of the denoised image when compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

2010 Image denoising using multi-stage sparse representations
abstract
This paper presents a novel image denoising method based on multiscale sparse representations. The denoising is performed in a multi-stage framework where sparse representations are obtained in different scales to capture multiscale image features. Based on the multi-stage structure, we introduce a new stopping criterion for sparse coding to capture image structures more accurately than previous methods. Furthermore we propose a thresholding technique to effectively avoid artifacts which are usually introduced due to the erroneous pursuit for noise-induced structures. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves PSNR performance comparable to other state-of-the-art methods while producing denoised images with superior visual quality.

2008 Fast -Term Pursuit for Sparse Image Representation
abstract
This letter introduces a practical algorithm called fast $M$-term pursuit (FMTP) for sparse approximation in redundant dictionaries. As an extension of the popular matching pursuit (MP), FMTP presents a good trade-off between high approximation performance and efficient implementation. Based on the effective estimation of the incoherence among dictionary atoms, FMTP combines the strength of both sequential and parallel techniques. Experimental results show that with slight approximation losses, FMTP yields significant speed improvements over the latest fast algorithms. It achieves a speedup of 63.46 in comparison with the MP approach.
