2026 Mini-Gemini: Mining the Potential of Multi-Modality Vision Language Models
abstract
In this work, we introduce Mini-Gemini, a simple and effective framework enhancing multi-modality Vision Language Models (VLMs). Despite the advancements in VLMs facilitating basic visual dialog and reasoning, a performance gap persists compared to advanced models like GPT-4 and Gemini. We propose a novel approach to narrow the gap by mining the potential of VLMs for better performance across various cross-modal tasks. It tackles the following questions: (1) How can high-resolution visual tokens improve image understanding without lengthening the token sequence? (2) How to improve reasoning and generation abilities of VLM with high-quality data? (3) How to close the gap between open-source VLMs and proprietary models on reasoning-driven generation? In particular, to enhance visual tokens, we propose to utilize an additional visual encoder for high-resolution refinement without increasing the visual token count. We further construct a high-quality dataset that promotes precise image comprehension and reasoning-based generation, expanding the operational scope of current VLMs. In general, Mini-Gemini further mines the potential of VLMs and empowers current frameworks with image understanding, reasoning, and generation simultaneously. The proposed model supports a series of dense and MoE Large Language Models (LLMs) from 2B to 34B, which achieve leading performance in several zero-shot benchmarks and even surpasses the developed private models. It is demonstrated to attain 80.6% accuracy on the MMB benchmark (+5.4 vs Gemini Pro) and 74.1% on TextVQA (+4.6 vs LLaVA-NeXT), achieving leading performance in several zero-shot benchmarks and even surpasses the developed private models. Furthermore, Mini-Gemini is proven to improve consistently with stronger LLM, visual encoder, and data in experiments.

2025 DreamOmni: Unified Image Generation and Editing
abstract
projectpagepCurrently, the success of large language models (LLMs) illustrates that a unified multitasking approach can significantly enhance model usability, stream-line deployment, and foster synergistic benefits across different tasks. However, in computer vision, while text-to-image (T2I) models have significantly improved generation quality through scaling up, their framework design did not initially consider how to unify with downstream tasks, such as various types of editing. To address this, we introduce DreamOmni, a unified model for image generation and editing. We begin by analyzing existing frameworks and the requirements of downstream tasks, proposing a unified framework that integrates both T2I models and various editing tasks. Furthermore, another key challenge is the efficient creation of high-quality editing data, particularly for instruction-based and drag-based editing. To this end, we develop a synthetic data pipeline using sticker-like elements to synthesize accurate, high-quality datasets efficiently, which enables editing data scaling up for unified model training. For training, DreamOmni jointly trains T2I generation and downstream tasks. T2I training enhances the model’s understanding of specific concepts and improves generation quality, while editing training helps the model grasp the nuances of the editing task. This collaboration significantly boosts editing performance. Extensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of DreamOmni. The code and model will be released.

2025 VisionZip: Longer is Better but Not Necessary in Vision Language Models
abstract
Recent advancements in vision-language models have enhanced performance by increasing the length of visual tokens, making them much longer than text tokens and significantly raising computational costs. However, we observe that the visual tokens generated by popular vision encoders, such as CLIP and SigLIP, contain significant redundancy. To address this, we introduce VisionZip, a simple yet effective method that selects a set of informative tokens for input to the language model, reducing visual token redundancy and improving efficiency while maintaining model performance. The proposed VisionZip can be widely applied to image and video understanding tasks and is well-suited for multi-turn dialogues in real-world scenarios, where previous methods tend to underperform. Experimental results show that VisionZip outperforms the previous state-of-the-art method by at least 5% performance gains across nearly all settings. Moreover, our method significantly enhances model inference speed, improving the prefilling time by 8× and enabling the LLaVA-Next 13B model to infer faster than the LLaVA-Next 7B model while achieving better results. Furthermore, we analyze the causes of this redundancy and encourage the community to focus on extracting better visual features rather than merely increasing token length. Our code is available at https://github.com/dvlab-research/VisionZip.

2025 LYRA: An Efficient and Speech-Centric Framework for Omni-Cognition
abstract
As Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) evolve, expanding beyond single-domain capabilities is essential to meet the demands for more versatile and efficient AI. However, previous omni-models have insufficiently explored speech, neglecting its integration with multi-modality. We introduce Lyra, an efficient MLLM that enhances multimodal abilities, including advanced long-speech comprehension, sound understanding, cross-modality efficiency, and seamless speech interaction. To achieve efficiency and speech-centric capabilities, Lyra employs three strategies: (1) leveraging existing open-source large models and a proposed multi-modality LoRA to reduce training costs and data requirements; (2) using a latent multi-modality regularizer and extractor to strengthen the relationship between speech and other modalities, thereby enhancing model performance; and (3) constructing a high-quality, extensive dataset that includes 1.5M multi-modal (language, vision, audio) data samples and 12K long speech samples, enabling Lyra to handle complex long speech inputs and achieve more robust omni-cognition. Compared to other omni-methods, Lyra achieves state-of-the-art performance on various vision-language, vision-speech, and speech-language benchmarks, while also using fewer computational resources and less training data.

2025 Concerto: Joint 2D-3D Self-Supervised Learning Emerges Spatial Representations
abstract
Humans learn abstract concepts through multisensory synergy, and once formed, such representations can often be recalled from a single modality. Inspired by this principle, we introduce Concerto, a minimalist simulation of human concept learning for spatial cognition, combining 3D intra-modal self-distillation with 2D-3D cross-modal joint embedding. Despite its simplicity, Concerto learns more coherent and informative spatial features, as demonstrated by zero-shot visualizations. It outperforms both standalone SOTA 2D and 3D self-supervised models by 14.2\% and 4.8\%, respectively, as well as their feature concatenation, in linear probing for 3D scene perception. With full fine-tuning, Concerto sets new SOTA results across multiple scene understanding benchmarks (e.g., 80.7\% mIoU on ScanNet). We further present a variant of Concerto tailored for video-lifted point cloud spatial understanding, and a translator that linearly projects Concerto representations into CLIP’s language space, enabling open-world perception. These results highlight that Concerto emerges spatial representations with superior fine-grained geometric and semantic consistency.

2024 GroupContrast: Semantic-Aware Self-Supervised Representation Learning for 3D Understanding
abstract
Self-supervised 3D representation learning aims to learn effective representations from large-scale unlabeled point clouds. Most existing approaches adopt point discrimination as the pretext task, which assigns matched points in two distinct views as positive pairs and unmatched points as negative pairs. However, this approach often results in semantically identical points having dissimilar representations, leading to a high number of false negatives and introducing a “semantic conflict” problem. To address this issue, we propose Group Contrast, a novel approach that combines segment grouping and semantic-aware contrastive learning. Segment grouping partitions points into semantically meaningful regions, which enhances semantic coherence and provides semantic guidance for the subsequent contrastive representation learning. Semantic-aware contrastive learning augments the semantic information extracted from segment grouping and helps to alleviate the issue of “semantic conflict”. We conducted extensive experiments on multiple 3D scene understanding tasks. The results demonstrate that GroupContrast learns semantically meaningful representations and achieves promising transfer learning performance.

2023 Hierarchical Dense Correlation Distillation for Few-Shot Segmentation
abstract
Few-shot semantic segmentation (FSS) aims to form class-agnostic models segmenting unseen classes with only a handful of annotations. Previous methods limited to the semantic feature and prototype representation suffer from coarse segmentation granularity and train-set overfitting. In this work, we design Hierarchically Decoupled Matching Network (HDMNet) mining pixel-level support correlation based on the transformer architecture. The self-attention modules are used to assist in establishing hierarchical dense features, as a means to accomplish the cascade matching between query and support features. Moreover, we propose a matching module to reduce train-set overfitting and introduce correlation distillation leveraging semantic correspondence from coarse resolution to boost fine-grained segmentation. Our method performs decently in experiments. We achieve 50.0% mIoU on COCO-20idataset one-shot setting and 56.0% on five-shot segmentation, respectively. The code is available on the project website11https://github.com/Pbihao/HDMNet.

2022 Mixed Supervision for Instance Learning in Object Detection with Few-shot Annotation
abstract
Mixed supervision for object detection (MSOD) that utilizes image-level annotations and a small amount of instance-level annotations has emerged as an efficient tool by alleviating the requirement for a large amount of costly instance-level annotations and providing effective instance supervision on previous methods that only use image-level annotations. In this work, we introduce the mixed supervision instance learning (MSIL), as a novel MSOD framework to leverage a handful of instance-level annotations to provide more explicit and implicit supervision. Rather than just adding instance-level annotations directly on loss functions for detection, we aim to dig out more effective explicit and implicit relations between these two different level annotations. In particular, we firstly propose the Instance-Annotation Guided Image Classification strategy to provide explicit guidance from instance-level annotations by using positional relation to force the image classifier to focus on the proposals which contain the correct object. And then, in order to exploit more implicit interaction between the mixed annotations, an instance reproduction strategy guided by the extra instance-level annotations is developed for generating more accurate pseudo ground truth, achieving a more discriminative detector. Finally, a false target instance mining strategy is used to refine the above processing by enriching the number and diversity of training instances with the position and score information. Our experiments show that the proposed MSIL framework outperforms recent state-of-the-art mixed supervised detectors with a large margin on both the Pascal VOC2007 and the MS-COCO dataset.

2021 A Virtual Reality-based Spoken English Learning Platform
abstract
Under economic globalization, the exchange between different countries is becoming more frequent. Increasingly more people worldwide start or prepare to learn second (or foreign) languages. In particular, the English language plays a significant role in globalization progress, given that it has been used as a means for international commerce and communication. However, traditional methods for acquiring a second language (e.g., attending tutorial classes) are costly in terms of time, money, and effort to many people. Given the increasing demand for English language learning and traditional learning methods' pitfalls, this paper introduces a virtual-reality-based platform for learning English. The platform provides virtual scenes of daily life, such as hospitals, supermarkets, and schools. Users can instantly communicate with other online users in the virtual world. Besides, aiming to improve users' learning efficiency, every word uttered is translated into English and users' mother language in real-time. This proposed system has five advantages: 1) It is efficient because users can use it to learn a language at any time and space. They can chat with foreigners online whenever they want and wherever they are. 2) Communicating with online users helps practice one's oral English without the need to find a partner in reality. 3) Instant translation facilitates instant learning and acquisition of the phases and vocabularies. 4) The virtual 3D environment simulating real-life scenes creates an enjoyable atmosphere for users to practice their oral English. 5) The system is universal to learners of different languages since it supports English and many other languages.
