2018 IT Professional 20th Anniversary Panel
abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. A complete record of the panel discussion was not made available for publication as part of the conference proceedings. Artificial intelligence (AI) is now creating a lot of excitement and hype among professionals and across all kinds of business and industry, as well as among individuals. It is no longer just the theme of science fiction essays and movies. It is emerging as new, innovative approach for solving challenging problems that we encounter in practice, and as an enabler of disruptive innovations and smarter world. AI’s renaissance is driven by recent complementary developments, including major advances in the AI arena, realistic expectations, and recent success in its applications. AI is also raising some major concerns, real and perceived. Nevertheless, AI is trending to become a new normal and is increasingly being adopted in many applications despite its concerns and limitations. This panel will examine the new realities of AI and offer its perspectives and recommendations. It’ll deliberate on: Where is AI headed? What new applications and innovations will emerge, and how they might impact? What are the risks and concerns? How we can leverage AI for good, and address its major risks and concerns? How do we get prepared for the new AI age?

2015 Panel: IT in Practice: Status and Challenges
abstract
Information technology has irrevocably transformed businesses, education, healthcare, banking, government, and many other key sectors. It is impacting nearly every aspect of human activities in practically all fields redefining the way we live, communicate, socialize, collaborate, and transact. It also continues to leap ahead offering new capabilities and extending its utility. Adoption of IT in practice, however, presents several technical, organisational and societal challenges. This panel will present a snapshot status of IT in practice in the developed and emerging world, outline IT prospects and discuss challenges that IT sector, businesses and government must address to realize the fuller potential of IT. It will also provide directions for further research and development.

2010 3G Mobile multimedia services (MMS) utilization in Indonesia: An exploratory research
abstract
The number of subscribers to 3G mobile networks in Indonesia is around 8.2% of total mobile phone subscribers, which shows a very low number compared with other countries. There exists a huge potential market which is yet to be exploited. To capitalize on this market, however, it is important to know the potential use of the 3G mobile networks in Indonesia as a developing country. One of the potential uses of the 3G mobile networks is 3G mobile multimedia services. To understand the current status and potential of 3G mobile multimedia services use among Indonesians, it is important to explore the reason why some Indonesians have, and others haven't yet, embraced 3G mobile multimedia services, and perceiving these services. In this article, we present key findings of our research that addresses these objectives. Our study reveals that although many respondents aware of the 3G technology, only 47% of respondents use 3G mobile multimedia services. Even those who use 3G mobile multimedia services have perceived only a limited use of 3G mobile multimedia services. The service that they mostly use is the internet access followed by video call and mobile TV. The services such as video email, mobile video, movie preview, and video surveillance are not much used. 53% of respondents do not use 3G mobile multimedia services though some of them have 3G services support mobile phone. The main reasons they cited for non using 3G services are high cost of the services, no compatible hand devices, family and friends do not use 3G mobile multimedia services, and 3G applications and services are not easy to use.

2004 Multi-Dimensional Evaluation of Information Retrieval Results
abstract
Evaluation of information retrieval (IR) results is an important and difficult activity. Available evaluation methods are commonly based on the classical recall and precision measures. While these methods provide an evaluation of average system performance, they are not able to identify influence of other factors such as retrieval task and system user. Detailed information is hidden behind the average and no indication can be obtained from the evaluation for further improvement. Therefore, there is a need of new methods for detailed evaluation. In this paper, we propose a multi-dimensional approach to the evaluation of IR results so that effects of both an IR system and the environment where the system performs on retrieval results can be examined. It aids in the identification of problems of the system and the environment with respect to retrieval effectiveness, and assists in making improvement for IR.

2003 A Dynamic Information Retrieval System for the Web
abstract
In conventional information retrieval (IR), documents in a collection are indexed before the retrieval process, and the document collection is generally static, organised and homogeneous. But, information on the Web is vast, dynamic, unorganised and heterogeneous. Current search engines and IR systems on the Web are based on the conventional indexing approach and have limitations including the need for frequent update of the index. We propose a non-indexing approach for information retrieval on the Web and show that the IR system based on this approach performs better than popular search engines.

2002 Meeting the challenges of web application development: the web engineering approach
abstract
The Web has very rapidly become central to many applications in diverse areas. As our reliance on Web-based applications continues to increase and the Web systems supporting these applications become more complex, there is growing concern about the manner in which the Web-based systems/applications are created and their quality, integrity and maintainability. The development of Web-based systems has generally been ad hoc, resulting in poor quality and maintainability. In the recent times, there have been many failures of Web applications due to a variety of problems and causes. The way the developers address these problems is critical to deploying successful large-scale Web applications. This tutorial addresses these issues and offers a holistic approach to managing the complexity of development of Web-based systems and Web applications. It highlights the various real-world issues, challenges and considerations in development of large Web applications, compared to traditional software development, and recommends the Web engineering approach that Web/software developers could follow.Web engineering deals with systematic, disciplined and quantifiable approaches to development, operation, and maintenance of Web-based systems and applications [1-9]. It embodies engineering principles and practices to Web application and Web site development and draws on software engineering and a number of contributing disciplines.Specifically, the tutorial aims to:• Highlight the problems, complexity and challenges of Web application development relative to software development• Offer a holistic approach to development of Web applications• Present Web development methodologies and processes• Address the issues of scalability, maintainability, usability, configuration management and other non-technical aspects• Recommend suitable Web testing and quality assurance approaches• Discuss project management issues specific to Web developmentThis tutorial is specifically targeted to address the needs of a growing community of software practitioners, Web application developers, project managers IT and business professionals, ecommerce system implementers, academics, researchers and students.
