| 2025 | Lessons from Twenty Years of Quantum Image ProcessingabstractQuantum image processing (QIMP) was first introduced in 2003 by Venegas-Andraca and Bose at the University of Oxford. This field attempts to overcome the limitations of classical computers and the potentially overwhelming complexity of classical algorithms by providing a more effective way to store and manipulate visual information. Over the past 20 years, QIMP has become an active area of research, experiencing rapid and vigorous development. However, these advancements have suffered from an imbalance, as inherent critical issues have been largely ignored. In this article, we review the original intentions for this field and analyze various unresolved issues from a new perspective, including QIMP algorithm design, potential advantages and limitations, technological debates, and potential directions for future development. We suggest that the 20-year milestone could serve as a new beginning and advocate for more researchers to focus their attention on this pursuit, helping to overcome bottlenecks, and achieving more practical results in the future. | 2020 | Secure Data Encryption Based on Quantum Walks for 5G Internet of Things ScenarioabstractFifth generation (5G) networks are the base communication technology for connecting objects in the Internet of Things (IoT) environment. 5G is being developed to provide extremely large capacity, robust integrity, high bandwidth, and low latency. With the development and innovating new techniques for 5G-IoT, it surely will drive to new enormous security and privacy challenges. Consequently, secure techniques for data transmissions will be needed as the basis for 5G-IoT technology to address these arising challenges. Therefore, various traditional security mechanisms are provided for 5G-IoT technologies and most of them are built on mathematical foundations. With the growth of quantum technologies, traditional cryptographic techniques may be compromised due to their mathematical computation based construction. Quantum walks (QWs) is a universal quantum computational model, which possesses inherent cryptographic features that can be utilized to build efficient cryptographic mechanisms. In this paper, we use the features of quantum walk to construct a new S-box method which plays a significant role in block cipher techniques for 5G-IoT technologies. As an application of the presented S-box mechanism and controlled alternate quantum walks (CAQWs) for 5G-IoT technologies a new robust video encryption mechanism is proposed. As well as to fulfill needs of encryption for varied files in 5G-IoT, we utilize the features of quantum walk to propose a novel encryption strategy for secure transmission of sensitive files in 5G-IoT paradigm. The analyses and results of the proposed cryptosystems show that it has better security properties and efficacy in terms of cryptographic performance. Ahmed A. | 2019 | Research-Based Approach to Undergraduate Chemical Engineering EducationabstractOne of the primary challenges in teaching basic undergraduate engineering courses is to design and implement educational experiences that enable students to understand elemental concepts and apply them in real-world problems. In Mexico, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey campus Estado de Mexico (ITESM-CEM) implemented a research-based learning experience as part of a sophomore year course for students reading for chemical and biotechnology engineering degrees. By engaging undergraduate students in a research project, we have successfully completed the academic objectives of the course, students developed research skills and transformed their attitude and perception towards a traditional course, into a novel and attractive approach by linking fundamental knowledge with state-of-the-art research. The findings of this study will redound to the benefit of universities and institutions teaching all types of engineering degrees by providing researchers and lecturers with some ideas to engage undergrad students in research projects; and to students, to motivate them to explore career options through an early research experience that enables them to make informed decisions about pursuing, or not, a career in research. | 2010 | Introduction to special issue: Physics and computer science - quantum computation and other approachesabstractComputer science and computer engineering are disciplines that have very definitely permeated and transformed every aspect of modern society. In these fields, cutting-edge research is about new models of computation, new materials and techniques for building computer hardware and novel methods for speeding-up algorithms. But it is also about building bridges between computer science and various other scientific fields, bridges that allow scientists to both think of natural phenomena as computational procedures and to employ novel models of computation to simulate natural processes (for example, quantum walks have been used to model energy transport in photosynthetic light harvesting complexes (Hoyer et al. 2010; Caruso et al. 2010)). A convergence of scientific, technological, economic and epistemological demands is driving and integrating this research. Salvador Elías Venegas-Andraca |
