2024 Traj2Former: A Local Context-aware Snapshot and Sequential Dual Fusion Transformer for Trajectory Classification
abstract
The wide use of mobile devices has led to a proliferated creation of extensive trajectory data, rendering trajectory classification increasingly vital and challenging for downstream applications. Existing deep learning methods offer powerful feature extraction capabilities to detect nuanced variances in trajectory classification tasks. However, their effectiveness remains compromised by the following two unsolved challenges. First, identifying the distribution of nearby trajectories based on noisy and sparse GPS coordinates poses a significant challenge, providing critical contextual features to the classification. Second, though efforts have been made to incorporate a shape feature by rendering trajectories into images, they fail to model the local correspondence between GPS points and image pixels. To address these issues, we propose a novel model termed Traj2Former to spotlight the spatial distribution of the adjacent trajectory points (i.e., contextual snapshot) and enhance the snapshot fusion between the trajectory data and the corresponding spatial contexts. We propose a new GPS rendering method to generate contextual snapshots, but it can be applied from a trajectory database to a digital map. Moreover, to capture diverse temporal patterns, we conduct a multi-scale sequential fusion by compressing the trajectory data with differing rates. Extensive experiments have been conducted to verify the superiority of the Traj2Former model.

2024 A Study of TMA Aircraft Conflict-Free Routing and Operation: With Mixed Integer Linear Programming, Multi-Agent Path Finding, and Metaheuristic-Based Neighborhood Search
abstract
In this paper, we proposed a conflict-free routing strategy combined with scheduling for Terminal Manoeuvring Area (TMA) multi-aircraft to guarantee a safe separation. By incorporating Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs) as route constraints, a mixed-logic model is designed to maximize the runway throughput while ensuring minimum separation between aircraft and avoiding overtaking on each STARs segment. Control techniques such as speed recommendation and holding operations are employed to the model to address potential conflicts. Three different algorithms are developed to solve the model: branch and bound with mixed-integer linear programming, multi-agent pathfinding with constraint programming, and meta-heuristics with evolutionary neighborhood search. These algorithms are tested on multiple cases of varying scales. Finally, we demonstrate the advantages of the proposed three algorithms by simulating realistic scenarios and comparing the results with Singapore ADS-B (Automatic dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) historical dataset. In one hour testing, results show that our method could reduce the last aircraft landing time nearly 10 minutes and save more than 80 minutes for total flight travel times for all aircraft, as well as non-vectoring flight trajectories, which indicates its potential to be used as an auxiliary decision-making tool for Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs).

2023 An Advanced Integrated Visible Light Communication and Localization System
abstract
Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging wireless technology to support high transmission rate for indoor devices by using existing lighting infrastructure, and VLC-based indoor localization is capable of providing high-accuracy localization. However, current VLC-based localization systems suffer from several key challenges such as sensitivity to random tilting of the receiver, which limits its full potential in real-world applications. In this paper, we design an integrated visible light communication and localization (VLCL) system to simultaneously support accurate real-time localization and communication services for indoor devices. To achieve this, an advanced differential phase difference of arrival (A-DPDOA) localization design is developed to simplify hardware and improve tracking robustness. In addition, a joint adaptive modulation, subcarrier and power allocation scheme is also proposed, which aims to improve the communication data rate and localization accuracy. Extensive experiments are performed to demonstrate that the proposed integrated VLCL system achieves higher localization accuracy and transmission data rate, compared to existing systems and schemes. Experiments also illustrate that the localization algorithm is more robust against the random tilting of the receiver under device movement in two-dimensional and three-dimensional scenarios.

2022 A XGBoost-Based Lane Change Prediction on Time Series Data Using Feature Engineering for Autopilot Vehicles
abstract
Road accidents wreck lives. Could technology stop them from happening? Driving better road safety with technology and artificial intelligence are the key elements considered by several carmakers. The key aspect of transportation in the future is to build an ecosystem comprising autonomous, connected, electric and shared mobility. The evolution of autonomous vehicles (AVs) can potentially aid transportation to people and be deployed to resolve mobility-related pain for drivers and safety on roads while changing lanes. Thus, the intelligent assistance system should be smart enough to track such vehicles while deviating into another lane. In this paper, we propose a lane change prediction framework for feature learning, with the aim to have a deep and comprehensive understanding of lane change behaviors, meanwhile, reach a high performance based on the selected features. A time-step dataset with more than 1000 features is constructed from vehicle trajectory data. To identify the key features involved in the original feature set, an XGBoost-based three-step feature learning algorithm is proposed, which integrates the feature importance ranking, metric selection and recursive feature elimination. After analyzing the accuracy of test data from different time segment positions, the sliding window method is applied on a time-step dataset with filtered features to properly select time segments, which are flattened into corresponding time-series dataset for model prediction. In our case studies, a publicly available dataset, Next Generation SIMulation (NGSIM), is adopted to conduct experiments of feature learning and lane change prediction, where we achieved a new state-of-art accuracy with 97.6% under the time-series data of 75 selected features and 1-second window size with predictor XGBoost after adopting proposed three-step method, which is superior to the other state-of-the-art feature selection methods.

2021 Faster Deployment for Indoor Visible Light Positioning Using Xgboost Algorithms in Industrial Internet-of-Things
abstract
In recent years, as an evolution of a distributed control system, the industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) enables high-degree automation in smart factories or workshops, and full location-awareness of all the interconnected instruments and devices are crucial for realizing IIoT. In this paper, a machine-learning-based indoor visible light positioning (VLP) system for IIoT is proposed and implemented in pursuit of significant reduction of time for offline preparation. An Xgboost-based position estimator using received signal strength (RSS) from light-emitting diode (LED) lighting is implemented. Several other popular machine-learning-based regression algorithms, including deep neural network (DNN), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) are adopted in the position estimator for experimental validation and performance comparison. In the experiment, the receiver was mounted on a smart trolley in a smart workshop, and the two-dimensional positioning performance was studied by placing the smart trolley in several positions within the coverage area. According to the experimental results, the performance of using Xgboost significantly outperforms others in terms of training speed while maintaining comparable positioning accuracy.

abstract
This paper experimentally demonstrates a new integrated visible light communication and positioning (VLCP) system to support both the communication and positioning services. To maximize the system transmission data rate while meeting different quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of devices (minimum data rate and positioning accuracy constraints), aQoS-driven joint the adaptive modulation, subcarrier allocation and pre-equalization is presented to improve the system performance. The experimental results indicate that the presented integrated VLCP system achieve the higher positioning accuracy than the existing integrated VLCP system, and also verify that the proposed QoS-driven optimized design archives higher data rate, positioning accuracy and QoS satisfied probability, compared with other existing designs.

2020 Coordinated Resource Allocation-Based Integrated Visible Light Communication and Positioning Systems for Indoor IoT
abstract
With the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) in the smart city, smart grid and smart industry, indoor communication and positioning are important fields of applications for indoor IoT. This paper presents an integrated visible light communication and positioning (VLCP) system for indoor IoT, in order to provide the high-speed data rate and high-accuracy positioning for IoT devices. where the filter bank multicarrier-based subcarrier multiplexing (FBMC-SCM) technique is exploited to effectively reduce the out-of-band interference (OOBI) on both adjacent communication and positioning subcarriers. After that, we propose a coordinated resource allocation approach for the system with the purpose of maximizing the sum rate while guaranteeing the minimum data rates and positioning accuracy requirements of devices. To this end, we solve the optimization problem by decomposing it into two subproblems, where a low-complexity suboptimal subcarrier allocation approach is proposed and the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method is adopted to solve the non-linearly constrained power allocation optimization problem. Numerical results verify the superiority in performance of the presented integrated VLCP system for indoor IoT, and the results also reveal that the proposed coordinated resource allocation approach can effectively improve the sum rate and the positioning accuracy compared with other resource allocation approaches.

2018 A Reversed Visible Light Multitarget Localization System via Sparse Matrix Reconstruction
abstract
A reversed indoor multitarget localization system employing compressive sensing (CS) theory is proposed for the first time in terms of visible light positioning (VLP). Unlike conventional VLP systems, where targets process the received light signals to localize themselves, our system works reversely by using multiple photodiodes (PDs) mounted on the ceiling to localize mobile targets that carry light emitting diodes. By utilizing its nature of sparsity, the problem of multitarget localization is formulated as a problem of sparse matrix reconstruction, and a 3-step workflow is developed to solve the problem. In this workflow, first, a sensing matrix is redesigned by using QR decomposition to enable CS theory. Next, the conventional l1-minimization (l1M) algorithm which is highly vulnerable to noise in solving a localization problem is theoretically analyzed and subsequently improved by adopting a reweighted l1M approach. Finally, a subgrid localization algorithm is proposed to overcome a common unpractical assumption of on-grid locations, tackle the false peak problem in sparse matrix reconstruction, and ultimately improve the localization precision. The feasibility of our system and supporting algorithms is verified through extensive simulations. Our system demonstrates a good positioning accuracy of 7.4 cm by using 25 PDs when SNR = 20 dB. We also investigate the impact of various factors on the positioning performance, and the obtained results provide an insightful reference paving the way to a practical system design.
