2013 Subband interference suppression in channel shortening for OFDMA downlink systems
abstract
In orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) downlink systems, user equipments over large delay spread channels reduce the cell spectral efficiency due to intersymbol interference (ISI). Channel shortening is an attractive filtering technique to mitigate ISI over such large delay spread scenarios, but the filter should be designed carefully to prevent subsequent spectrum null phenomenon. In this paper, we propose subband interference suppression (SIS) in channel shortening for OFDMA downlink systems. In our framework, we first develop the minimum subband interference (MSI) filter which reduces the interference and noise enhancement within the subcarriers of interest. To reduce its complexity, we present the delay preselection method, which predetermines significant delay candidates on the basis of estimation results. Simulation results show that the proposed SIS framework is effective over cellular scenarios, where conventional schemes do not work properly.

2013 Efficient QRM-MAP detector for spatial multiplexing MIMO systems
abstract
In this paper, we propose an efficient soft-detector for spatial multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output systems. Maximum a posteriori probability detection employing QR decomposition with M algorithm (QRM-MAP) achieves improved performance by adopting unbiased minimum-mean-square error (UMMSE) preprocessing. The efficiency of QRM-MAP can be further improved by using statistical information obtained from MMSE detection. Based on this information, the proposed detector orders tree branches and excludes insignificant branches in advance. To achieve low-and-fixed complexity, the node enumeration pattern that considers the greedy nature of the M algorithm is predetermined according to the node order. In addition, the soft information from MMSE can be used to compensate for the inherent performance loss caused by an insufficient number of candidates. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides an enhanced performance-complexity tradeoff as compared to the conventional schemes.

2013 Opportunistic Two-Stage Feedback and Scheduling for MIMO Downlink Systems
abstract
We propose an opportunistic two-stage feedback and scheduling algorithm that is based upon zero-forcing beamforming with semi-orthogonal user selection (ZFBF-SUS) to reduce its feedback load. In an SUS algorithm, a base station schedules semi-orthogonal users using the feedback of all users' channel information. However, such feedback overhead significantly increases with the number of users. To reduce the feedback load of ZFBF-SUS systems, the proposed two-stage feedback scheme opportunistically and separately exploits the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio and orthogonality in each stage such that only a fraction of users feed back their channel information. Based on this opportunistic feedback scheme, we decouple the entire process of the SUS into two sub-processes. The proposed two-stage feedback and scheduling scheme effectively exclude the inappropriate users for ZFBF transmission in both feedback and scheduling periods, and thus save the scarce resources consumed for the feedback process. We derive an analytical expression for the average number of feedback bits of the proposed system and optimize it in an averaged sense. Further, the sum-rate of the proposed system is theoretically investigated. Both analytical and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the performance of conventional ZFBF-SUS systems with a significantly reduced number of feedback bits.

2012 Iterative Channel Estimation with Frequency Replacement for SC-FDMA Systems
abstract
Single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) is an attractive air interface scheme for broadband wireless communications. For the coherent demodulation of SC-FDMA systems, the receiver performs channel estimation to obtain the channel frequency response by using the reference signals multiplexed in the transmitted signal. In this paper, we propose an iterative frequency domain channel estimation scheme for SC-FDMA systems. To prevent severe noise enhancements due to the Gaussianity of the frequency domain data signal, we consider two low complexity algorithms, namely, hard and soft frequency replacements. We first analytically derive the mean square error (MSE) to characterize the effects of frequency replacement and post iterative filtering. By analyzing MSE performance, we present a design framework to develop the optimal frequency replacement. Based on the design framework, hard and soft frequency replacement algorithms are optimized in the MSE sense. Then, their low complexity adaptation methods are proposed for practical SC-FDMA systems, where the proposed frequency replacement is performed according to the reliability of the data estimates. Simulation results show that the proposed iterative channel estimation techniques effectively compensate for noise enhancements, and thus give good MSE and frame error rate performances.

2011 Improved Network-Coded Cooperative Transmission with Low-Complexity Adaptation to Wireless Channels
abstract
The relay employs network coding to transmit the packets from the source nodes simultaneously, for increasing spectral efficiency in wireless environments. The cooperative transmission based on network coding usually works on decode-and-forward (DF) protocols. However, detection errors at the relay cause error propagation, which degrades the performance of cooperative communications. To overcome this problem, we model the error propagation effect of the DF-based system at the destination as the addition of virtual noise, and then design a low complexity detection method. We derive the achievable diversity gain to evaluate the proposed model and corresponding detection scheme. To extend the proposed model to network-coded systems, we first express the channel conditions between the sources and relay as a single equivalent channel gain. Then, we develop low complexity detection schemes for the network-coded systems. From the error propagation model, we propose a dual mode network coding technique, which exploits different network coding schemes adaptively according to channel qualities. Simulation results show that the proposed model and detection scheme effectively reduce the error propagation effects. Also, the proposed dual mode network coding has gains for all channel conditions and thus gives better BER performance than conventional methods.

2011 Opportunistic Network-Coded Cooperative Transmission with Demodulate-and-Forward Protocol in Wireless Channels
abstract
In this letter, we consider a multiuser cooperative transmission scheme with network coding over wireless channels. Network coding based on decode-and-forward protocol is a promising technique to improve network throughput. However, decoding errors at the relay cause error propagation, which degrades the performance of network-coded cooperations. To mitigate the error propagation in the network-coded signal, we first express a single equivalent gain, and then the opportunistic relay selection and proportional combining schemes are performed with the equivalent channel and the relay-destination channel. Simulation results show that all cooperative users can obtain a diversity gain of order two by using single network-coded transmission, even when there are detection errors at the relay.

2010 Iterative detection for spectral efficient user cooperative transmissions over multipath fading channels
abstract
Cooperative communications can achieve spatial diversity gain and enhance coverage. However, conventional half-duplex relaying schemes suffer from the loss in spectral efficiency, because the two channel uses are required for transmission from the source to the destination. In this paper, we present spectral efficient transmissions for a user cooperative diversity system over multipath fading channels. To increase the spectral efficiency, a node, which acts as a relay, employs a superposition coding to transmit its own data block and the data block from the other node simultaneously. For superposition, we consider two different re-encoding schemes. One is based on complex field superposition coding and the other is based on Galois field superposition coding. In both re-encoding schemes, we introduce a user-specific interleaver to the data blocks for user separation. We also propose an iterative detection scheme to combat the effects of inter-symbol interference caused by multipath fading and to extract diversity gain from the superposed signals. For performance estimation, we develop a density evolution technique. It is shown that the proposed schemes can obtain diversity gain without sacrificing spectral efficiency and the predicted performances are consistent with simulated performances.

2009 Amplitude clipping and iterative reconstruction of MIMO-OFDM signals with optimum equalization
abstract
Multi-input multi-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) has become a promising candidate for next generation broadband wireless communications. However, like a single-input single-output (SISO)-OFDM, one main disadvantage of the MIMO-OFDM is the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which can be reduced by using an amplitude clipping. In this paper, we propose clipped signal reconstruction methods for the MIMO-OFDMs with spatial diversity, such as space-time and space-frequency block codes (STBC/SFBC). The proposed methods are based on the technique called iterative amplitude reconstruction (IAR) for SISO-OFDM. It is shown that the IAR can be easily employed for the STBC-OFDM, but it cannot be directly applied to the SFBC-OFDM, because the transmitted sequences over different antennas are dependent due to the use of space-frequency code. We propose a new SFBC transmitter for clipped OFDM, which has approximately half the computational complexity of conventional SFBC-OFDM. The proposed clipping preserves the orthogonality of transmitted signals, and the clipped signals are iteratively recovered at the receiver. Further, we theoretically analyze the performance of IAR with optimum equalization, and also provide highly accurate channel estimation of the OFDM with amplitude clipping. Simulation results show that the proposed receivers effectively recover contaminated OFDM signals with a moderate computational complexity.

2008 A Pilot Design Technique for Single-Carrier Transmission over Fast Fading Relay Channels
abstract
Relay-assisted space-time block code (STBC) and space-frequency block code (SFBC) for single carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) were presented. They achieve spatial diversity over fading relay channels under the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI). In this paper, we propose a pilot position selection/detection technique for channel estimation of those systems. Unlike the conventional block-type channel estimation techniques, the proposed scheme superimposes pilots on data-carrying tones whose positions are selected to minimize the distortion of original signals. Without additional pilot overhead, the proposed technique can track the CSI even when the mobile equipment speed is high. The corresponding destination structure and frequency domain equalization are also presented, where the pilot positions are blindly detected and the distorted data symbols are iteratively reconstructed. Simulation results show that the proposed method gives better BER performance than the block-type channel estimation for the distributed SFBC (D-SFBC) SC-FDE over fast fading relay channels, without the loss of spectral efficiency.

2007 Amplitude Clipping and Iterative Reconstruction of STBC/SFBC-OFDM Signals
abstract
As with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), one main disadvantage of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) OFDM is the prohibitively large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of transmitted signals on different antennas, which can be reduced by a deliberate amplitude clipping. However, clipping causes distortion that degrades the system performance. In this letter, we propose clipping noise mitigation techniques for space-time and space-frequency block coded (STBC/SFBC)-OFDMs. A new SFBC transmitter for clipped OFDM is proposed, and the optimum equalizer is derived for reconstruction of the clipped signals. Simulation results show that the proposed receivers effectively recover contaminated STBC/SFBC-OFDM signals with a moderate computational complexity.
