2024 IAPT: Instance-Aware Prompt Tuning for Large Language Models
abstract
Soft prompt tuning is a widely studied parameter-efficient fine-tuning method. However, it has a clear drawback: many soft tokens must be inserted into the input sequences to guarantee downstream performance. As a result, soft prompt tuning is less considered than Low-rank adaptation (LoRA) in the large language modeling (LLM) era.In this work, we propose a novel prompt tuning method, Instruction-Aware Prompt Tuning (IAPT), that requires only four soft tokens.First, we install a parameter-efficient soft prompt generator at each Transformer layer to generate idiosyncratic soft prompts for each input instruction. The generated soft prompts can be seen as a semantic summary of the input instructions and can effectively guide the output generation.Second, the soft prompt generators are modules with a bottleneck architecture consisting of a self-attention pooling operation, two linear projections, and an activation function.Pilot experiments show that prompt generators at different Transformer layers require different activation functions. Thus, we propose to learn the idiosyncratic activation functions for prompt generators automatically with the help of rational functions. We have conducted experiments on various tasks, and the experimental results demonstrate that (a) our IAPT method can outperform the recent baselines with comparable tunable parameters.(b) Our IAPT method is more efficient than LoRA under the singlebackbone multi-tenant setting.

2024 ULTRAFEEDBACK: Boosting Language Models with Scaled AI Feedback
abstract
Learning from human feedback has become a pivot technique in aligning large language models (LLMs) with human preferences. However, acquiring vast and premium human feedback is bottlenecked by time, labor, and human capability, resulting in small sizes or limited topics of current datasets. This further hinders feedback learning as well as alignment research within the open-source community. To address this issue, we explore how to go beyond human feedback and collect high-quality AI feedback automatically for a scalable alternative. Specifically, we identify scale and diversity as the key factors for feedback data to take effect. Accordingly, we first broaden instructions and responses in both amount and breadth to encompass a wider range of user-assistant interactions. Then, we meticulously apply a series of techniques to mitigate annotation biases for more reliable AI feedback. We finally present UltraFeedback, a large-scale, high-quality, and diversified AI feedback dataset, which contains over 1 million GPT-4 feedback for 250k user-assistant conversations from various aspects. Built upon UltraFeedback, we align a LLaMA-based model by best-of-$n$ sampling and reinforcement learning, demonstrating its exceptional performance on chat benchmarks. Our work validates the effectiveness of scaled AI feedback data in constructing strong open-source chat language models, serving as a solid foundation for future feedback learning research.

2023 ACF: Aligned Contrastive Finetuning For Language and Vision Tasks
abstract
Contrastive learning (CL) has achieved great success in various fields with self-supervised learning. However, CL under the supervised setting is not fully explored, especially how to utilize the class labels in CL. We propose a novel aligned contrastive finetuning (ACF) approach in this work. Specifically, we consider the label embeddings as labeled instances and put them in an InfoNCE loss objective together with the instance representations, thus aligning the label embeddings and instance representation in the same semantic space. In addition, we design a correlation-based regularization term to alleviate the anisotropy problem. Extensive experiments are conducted on language understanding and image classification tasks, demonstrating our ACF method’s competitiveness. ACF is off-the-shelf and can be plugged into any pre-trained models without additional network architectures or computation overhead.

2021 GAML-BERT: Improving BERT Early Exiting by Gradient Aligned Mutual Learning
abstract
In this work, we propose a novel framework, Gradient Aligned Mutual Learning BERT (GAML-BERT), for improving the early exiting of BERT.GAML-BERT's contributions are two-fold.We conduct a set of pilot experiments, which shows that mutual knowledge distillation between a shallow exit and a deep exit leads to better performances for both. From this observation, we use mutual learning to improve BERT's early exiting performances, that is, we ask each exit of a multi-exit BERT to distill knowledge from each other.Second, we propose GA, a novel training method that aligns the gradients from knowledge distillation to cross-entropy losses.Extensive experiments are conducted on the GLUE benchmark, which shows that our GAML-BERT can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art (SOTA) BERT early exiting methods.

2020 Mining Infrequent High-Quality Phrases from Domain-Specific Corpora
abstract
Phrase mining is a fundamental task for text analysis and has various downstream applications such as named entity recognition, topic modeling, and relation extraction. In this paper, we focus on mining high-quality phrases from domain-specific corpora with special consideration of infrequent ones. Previous methods might miss infrequent high-quality phrases in the candidate selection stage. And these methods rely on explicit features to mine phrases while rarely considering the implicit features. In addition, completeness is rarely explicitly considered in the evaluation of a high-quality phrase. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that exploits a sequence labeling model to capture infrequent phrases. And we employ implicit semantic features and contextual POS tag statistics to measure meaningfulness and completeness, respectively. Experiments over four real-world corpora demonstrate that our method achieves significant improvements over previous state-of-the-art methods across different domains and languages.

2016 Semantic Documents Relatedness using Concept Graph Representation
abstract
We deal with the problem of document representation for the task of measuring semantic relatedness between documents. A document is represented as a compact concept graph where nodes represent concepts extracted from the document through references to entities in a knowledge base such as DBpedia. Edges represent the semantic and structural relationships among the concepts. Several methods are presented to measure the strength of those relationships. Concepts are weighted through the concept graph using closeness centrality measure which reflects their relevance to the aspects of the document. A novel similarity measure between two concept graphs is presented. The similarity measure first represents concepts as continuous vectors by means of neural networks. Second, the continuous vectors are used to accumulate pairwise similarity between pairs of concepts while considering their assigned weights. We evaluate our method on a standard benchmark for document similarity. Our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods including ESA (Explicit Semantic Annotation) while our concept graphs are much smaller than the concept vectors generated by ESA. Moreover, we show that by combining our concept graph with ESA, we obtain an even further improvement.

2013 MeDetect: A LOD-Based System for Collective Entity Annotation in Biomedicine
abstract
With the ever-growing use of textual biomedical data, domain entity annotation has become very important in biomedicine. Previous works on annotating domain entities from biomedical references suffer from several issues, such as a data flexibility problem, language dependency, and limitations with respect to word sense disambiguation. Meanwhile, the Linked Open Data (LOD) Initiative aims at interlinking data from various open knowledge bases. The numbers of entities and properties describing semantic relationships between entities within the linked data cloud have become very large. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-incentive approach for entity annotation in biomedicine, and present Me Detect, a prototype system that we developed based on this approach. With this approach, we over-come the problems of previous works using LOD-based collective annotation. Finally, we present the results of experiments that verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

2010 Towards a More Effective Mashup Using Mashable Service Model
abstract
Web is becoming a programmable platform and Mashup is emerging as a brand-new service composition paradigm. However, one of the biggest blocking issues with the universal adoption of Mashup is lack of a well-designed inventory of mashable services for users to create mashups effectively. In this paper, we propose a novel and practical method to conceptualize, model and design the mashable services in a specific domain. Firstly, through analyzing current mashups theoretically, we present a conceptual model of mashable service, which describes not only a service, but also the relationships with other services. As a result, the services and their relationships in a domain can be formalized as a directed graph, in which vertex represent services and edges represent relationships. Furthermore, a mashup can be modeled as one of its sub-graph. Secondly, we present a novel and practical method to identify and design the inventory of mashable services through mapping the well-known Entity-Relationship Model to mashable service model. The inventory of mashable services enables business users to create mashups for their situational problems effectively. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a real-world domain to show the feasibility and effectiveness.

2009 Dissemination of heterogeneous XML data in publish/subscibe systems
abstract
The publish-subscribe paradigm is an effective approach for data publishers to asynchronously disseminate relevant data to a large number of data subscribers. A lot of recent research has focused on extending this paradigm to support content-based delivery of XML data using more expressive XML-based subscription specifications that allow constraints on both data contents as well as structure. However, due to the heterogeneous data schemas used by different data publishers even for data in the same domain, an important challenge is how to efficiently and effectively disseminate relevant data to subscribers whose subscriptions might be specified based on schemas that are different from those used by the data publishers. In this paper, we examine the options to resolve this schema heterogeneity problem in XML data dissemination, and propose a novel paradigm that is based on data rewriting. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the data rewriting paradigm and identifies the tradeoffs of the various approaches.

2009 sMash: semantic-based mashup navigation for data API network
abstract
With the proliferation of data APIs, it is not uncommon that users who have no clear ideas about data APIs will encounter difficulties to build Mashups to satisfy their requirements. In this paper, we present a semantic-based mashup navigation system, sMash that makes mashup building easy by constructing and visualizing a real-life data API network. We build a sample network by gathering more than 300 popular APIs and find that the relationships between them are so complex that our system will play an important role in navigating users and give them inspiration to build interesting mashups easily. abstract
We present sMash, a system for facilitating users to mashup Web data. The aspects emphasized by the demo are: (1) how to help novice users master data APIs and relationships amongst them easily; (2) how to inspire various users to build more amazing Web data mashups. First, a real-life data API network is constructed and visualized to enable users to surf and mashup. Second, two kinds of recommendations are generated dynamically based on a comprehensive analysis of the network, user's traces and a repository of mashups to provide navigation.

2007 Piggyback Optimization of XML Data Dissemination
abstract
In this paper, we have proposed a novel approach to optimize the performance of content-based dissemination of XML data by piggybacking useful annotations to the document being forwarded so that a downstream router can leverage the processing done by its upstream router to reduce its own processing overhead. The piggyback optimization approach outperforms the conventional method by a factor of 2.

2007 Efficient xml data dissemination with piggybacking
abstract
Content-based dissemination of XML data using the publish-subscribe paradigm is an effective means to deliver relevant data to interested data consumers. To meet the performance challenges of content-based filtering and routing, two key optimizations have been developed: the use of efficient indexes to speed up subscription filtering, and the use of effective aggregation algorithms to reduce the number of subscriptions. The effectiveness of both these techniques are, however, limited to locally improving the performance of individual routers. In this paper, we propose a novel and holistic optimization approach that allows a downstream router to leverage the subscription matchings done by upstream routers to reduce its own filtering work. This is achieved by piggybacking useful annotations to the XML document being forwarded. We explore several design options and tradeoffs of this novel optimization approach. Our experimental results demonstrate that our piggyback optimization achieves significant performance improvement under various conditions.

2006 Content-based Dissemination of Fragmented XML Data
abstract
Content-based dissemination of data using pub/sub systems is an effective means to deliver relevant data to interested data consumers. With the emergence of XML as the standard for data representation and exchange, a lot of attention has been focused on pub/sub systems for XML-based dissemination, where subscriptions are specified using more expressive XML-based languages (e.g., XPath). In this paper, we address the problem of matching XPath-based subscriptions on fragmented XML data, which is motivated by both the prevalance of resource-constrained mobile devices for accessing/monitoring data as well as by the optimization opportunities from processing data in terms of fragments. We investigate efficient strategies to schedule and optimize the evaluation of XPath-based subscriptions on XML fragments. Our experimental results not only demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed optimizations but also reveal several interesting performance tradeoffs.
