2024 MP-ORAM: A Novel ORAM Design for Multicore Processor Systems
abstract
Security becomes increasingly critical in today's ubiquitous computing. One vulnerable part of a computing system is the bus between the processor chip and the external off-chip memory, where data transferred on the bus can be snooped. To protect data confidentiality, encryption is commonly used. However, encryption alone is not sufficient since the adversary can still find out useful information using the memory address trace. Oblivious RAM (ORAM) is a strong security measure to prevent such information leak. ORAM hides a true memory access in a round of random (dummy) accesses to the memory such that the data and addresses transferred over the memory buses look oblivious to the adversary. However, the existing ORAM designs often incur a hefty performance overhead, which greatly slows down the processor execution, especially for the multicore processor system where the potentially high memory access frequency from the multiple cores could make the impact of the performance overhead even more critical. To address this issue, we, for the first time, propose to process multiple memory access requests in a single round of dummy memory accesses. As such, we develop a novel ORAM design, called MP-ORAM, that targets the multicore system and is able to simultaneously handle a dynamic number of memory access requests to mitigate the performance overhead without compromising the obliviousness of the off-chip memory access trace. We have built a prototype for MP-ORAM and successfully integrated it into a RISCV-based multicore processor system. The whole system has also been implemented on a Xilinx Ultrascale+ ZCU102 FPGA board, with which we can effectively evaluate the performance of our design. Our evaluation, based on the SPLASH-2 benchmark suit, shows that MP-ORAM improves performance by 51–157% while only consuming up to 22% extra FPGA resources as compared to the baseline design. Furthermore, from the NIST randomness tests on the memory access traces generated by MP-ORAM, we have demonstrated that this performance improvement does not affect the obliviousness of the memory access trace. Most importantly, MP-ORAM is the first ORAM design of its kind that has been fully implemented and evaluated on a real multicore processor system with OS support.

2018 A Bandwidth-Aware Authentication Scheme for Packet-Integrity Attack Detection on Trojan Infected NoC
abstract
Bandwidth is a fundamental issue in the NoC (Network on Chip) design and increasing use of the third-party NoC IPs adds the security as another design concern. The third-party NoC may have hardware Trojans that can break the confidentiality and integrity of the data transferred over the NoC, thereafter exposing the system to varied attacks. Basically, encryption can be applied to protect the data confidentiality; For the data integrity, authentication is often used. A general authentication approach for network communication is using a tag to identify the data; The tag is attached to the data at the source and the data is verified against the tag at the destination. For the effectiveness of the authentication, a large tag size is desired. But large tags, when transferred over the NoC, will consume considerable network bandwidth, potentially conflicting with the system performance requirement. In this paper, we propose a progressive packet data authentication scheme, where a packet is progressively authenticated against a set of small tag segments such that the authentication overhead is low yet the effective tag size is large. The experiments in our case study of 2D mesh NoC demonstrate that our design can achieve savings about 36% on bandwidth and 56% on implementation area cost as compared to the baseline design with the traditional non-progressive authentication scheme.

2016 Improving tag generation for memory data authentication in embedded processor systems
abstract
Data integrity is important. One way to protect data integrity is attaching an identifying tag to individual data. The authenticity of the data can then be checked against its tag. If the data is altered by the adversary, the related tag becomes invalid and the attack will be detected. This paper studies an existing tag design (CETD) for memory data in embedded processor systems, where data that are stored in the memory or transferred over the bus can be tampered and need to be authenticated before use. Compared to other designs, this design offers the flexibility of tradeoff between the implementation cost and tag size (hence the level of security); the design is cost effective and can counter the data integrity attack with random values; namely the fake values used to replace the valid data in the attack are random. However, we find that the design is vulnerable when the fake data is not randomly selected. For some data, their tags are not distributed over the full tag value space but rather limited to a reduced set of values. When those values were chosen as the fake value, the data alteration would likely go undetected. In this paper, we analytically investigate this problem and propose a low cost enhancement to ensure the full-range distribution of tag values for each data, hence effectively removing the vulnerability of the original design.

2016 Fault-Tolerant Scheduling for Real-Time Scientific Workflows with Elastic Resource Provisioning in Virtualized Clouds
abstract
Clouds are becoming an important platform for scientific workflow applications. However, with many nodes being deployed in clouds, managing reliability of resources becomes a critical issue, especially for the real-time scientific workflow execution where deadlines should be satisfied. Therefore, fault tolerance in clouds is extremely essential. The PB (primary backup) based scheduling is a popular technique for fault tolerance and has effectively been used in the cluster and grid computing. However, applying this technique for real-time workflows in a virtualized cloud is much more complicated and has rarely been studied. In this paper, we address this problem. We first establish a real-time workflow fault-tolerant model that extends the traditional PB model by incorporating the cloud characteristics. Based on this model, we develop approaches for task allocation and message transmission to ensure faults can be tolerated during the workflow execution. Finally, we propose a dynamic fault-tolerant scheduling algorithm, FASTER, for realtime workflows in the virtualized cloud. FASTER has three key features: 1) it employs a backward shifting method to make full use of the idle resources and incorporates task overlapping and VM migration for high resource utilization, 2) it applies the vertical/horizontal scaling-up technique to quickly provision resources for a burst of workflows, and 3) it uses the vertical scaling-down scheme to avoid unnecessary and ineffective resource changes due to fluctuated workflow requests. We evaluate our FASTER algorithm with synthetic workflows and workflows collected from the real scientific and business applications and compare it with six baseline algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that FASTER can effectively improve the resource utilization and schedulability even in the presence of node failures in virtualized clouds.

2015 Effective hardware-level thread synchronization for high performance and power efficiency in application specific multi-threaded embedded processors
abstract
Multi-threaded processors interleave the execution of several threads to reduce processor stalling time. Instruction cache misses usually account for a significant fraction of the overall stalling time due to frequent instruction fetches. Apart from incurring extended execution time (hence its direct impact on energy consumption), cache misses also lead to indirect power overheads and increased thread switching due to resulting main memory accesses. Therefore, minimizing instruction cache misses is important especially in designing application specific embedded processors that tend to be compact in size and consume low power. This paper aims to reduce instruction cache misses in a single pipeline processor for applications that offer embarrassing parallelism and enable the same code to be executed by a number of independent threads on different data sets. Such a design can be used as a building block processor for large multicomputer systems. We propose a micro-architectural level multithreading control design, which synchronizes the thread execution to allow cached instructions to be maximally reused by all threads. Our experiments show that our design not only increases the pipeline performance but also reduces the memory access frequency, hence effectively achieving high energy efficiency.

2012 A cost-effective tag design for memory data authentication in embedded systems
abstract
This paper presents a tag design approach for memory data integrity protection. The approach is area, power and memory efficient, suitable to embedded systems that often suffer from stringent resource restriction. Experiments have been performed to compare the proposed approach with the state-of-the-art designs, which demonstrate that the approach can produce a memory data protection design with a low resource cost - achieving overhead savings of about 39% on chip area, 45% on power consumption, 65% on performance, and 12% on memory cost while maintaining the same or higher security level.

2010 Enabling large decoded instruction loop caching for energy-aware embedded processors
abstract
Low energy consumption in embedded processors is increasingly important in step with the system complexity. The on-chip instruction cache (I-cache) is usually a most energy consuming component on the processor chip due to its large size and frequent access operations. To reduce such energy consumption, the existing loop cache approaches use a tiny decoded cache to filter the I-cache access and instruction decode activity for repeated loop iterations. However, such designs are effective to small and simple loops, and only suitable for DSP kernel-like applications. They are not effectual to many embedded applications where complex loops are common.

2009 A Segmental Bus-invert Coding Method for Instruction Memory Data Bus Power Efficiency
abstract
This paper presents a bus coding methodology for instruction memory data-bus switching reduction. Compared to the existing state of the art multi-way partial bus-invert coding (MPBI) which relies on data bit-correlation, our approach is very effective in reducing switching activity for bus data, since little correlation can be observed on instruction data buses. Our experiments demonstrate the proposed encoding can reduce up to 42% of switching activity, with an average of 30% reduction, while MPBI achieves just 17.6% reduction in switching activity.

2009 ROBTIC: An On-chip Instruction Cache Design for Low Power Embedded Systems
abstract
The on-chip instruction cache is a potential power hungry component in embedded systems due to its large chip area and high access-frequency. Aiming at reducing power consumption of the on-chip cache, we proposed a Reduced One-Bit Tag Instruction Cache (ROBTIC), where the cache size is judiciously reduced and the cache tag field only contains the least significant bit of the full tag. We developed a cache operational control scheme for ROBTIC so that with the one-bit cache tag, the program locality can still be efficiently exploited. For applications where most of the memory accesses are localized, our cache is able to achieve similar performance as a traditional full-tag cache; however, the power consumption of the cache can be significantly reduced due to the much smaller cache size, narrower tag array (just one bit), and tinier tag comparison circuit being used. The experiments on a set of benchmarks demonstrate that our approach can reduce up to 25.8% power consumption and 30.9% area of the traditional cache when the cache size is fixed at 32 instructions. With the cache size customization, a further 48% power saving can be achieved.

2006 Customization of application specific heterogeneous multi-pipeline processors
abstract
In this paper we propose application specific instruction set processors with heterogeneous multiple pipelines to efficiently exploit the available parallelism at instruction level. We have developed a design system based on the Thumb processor architecture. Given an application specified in C language, the design system can generate a processor with a number of pipelines specifically suitable to the application, and the parallel code associated with the processor. Each pipeline in such a processor is customized, and implements its own special instruction set so that the instructions can be executed in parallel with low hardware overhead. Our simulations and experiments with a group of benchmarks, largely from Mibench suite, show that on average, 77% performance improvement can be achieved compared to a single pipeline ASIP, with the overheads of 49% on area, 51% on leakage power, 17% on switching activity, and 69% on code size.

1998 Unrolling Loops With Indeterminate Loop Counts in System Level Pipelines
abstract
This paper describes the unrolling of loops with indeterminate loop counts in system level pipelines. Two methods are discussed in this paper. The first method is the varied latency method, where the input is blocked until the pipeline is clear. This variation in the input arrival time gives rise to the name. In this method the output will be in the same order as the input. The second method, called the fixed latency method, allows for the input arrival time to remain unchanged. The loops with loop count in excess of the number of unrolled loops will have to be stored, until a suitable gap in the system becomes available. Analysis of the both methods is given, which shows that the fixed latency method is significantly faster but needs reordering of tasks and memory to store tasks.

1998 Power Reduction in Pipelines
abstract
The reduction of power consumption for a system level pipeline is addressed in this paper. The pipeline is composed of several stages. Each stage has several behaviours. Different behaviours have differing execution times. The speed of the pipeline is only affected by the behaviours on the critical path of the slowest stages. Other behaviours can be slowed down to decrease the power consumed in the system. We propose a multi-voltage supply scheme, in which differing behaviours are supplied with differing voltages. The formulas for computing the supply voltage of each behaviour and minimal power consumption are derived in this paper. The results of computer experiment show that up to 80% hardware power can be saved with this scheme.

1997 Power consumption in CMOS combinational logic blocks at high frequencies
abstract
A new model for estimating dynamic power dissipation in CMOS combinational circuits at differing voltages is presented. The proposed model deals with power dissipation of circuits at saturation frequencies, where the output voltage does not reach 100% of the supply voltage and the output voltage waveform is almost a triangular waveform. We show that the dynamic power consumption at saturation frequencies is only dependent on the supply voltage, and is independent of load capacitance and switching speed. This model shows that when a circuit is working in the saturation frequency range, as the frequency is increased, the performance/power ratio is increased. However, this increase in performance/power ratio is at the expense of noise margin. The model is theoretically and empirically shown to be correct. This model can be used to design a system where the differing combinational logic blocks are supplied with differing voltages. Such a system would consume lower power than if the system was supplied by a single voltage rail.
