| 2017 | Implementation of Coordinated MIMO-OFDM with Independent Local OscillatorsabstractThe performance of a coordinated multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system is limited by the presence of the local oscillator frequency mismatch, where each transmitter and receiver is driven by an independent local oscillator. This paper proposes a simple pilot assisted estimation of symbol-by-symbol carrier offset for every pair of the transmitter and the receiver to enable spatial multiplexing in a coordinated MIMO-OFDM system. The proposed method takes advantage of the characteristics of OFDM and the relative local oscillator stability assisted by the global positioning system receiver. The proposed method was implemented on an actual hardware platform demonstrating spectral efficiency improvement of four times using four transmitters and four receivers in 800MHz band. | 2012 | Large-scale multiple antenna fixed wireless systems for rural areasabstractMulti-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) has a potential to realize cost effective high data rate internet access to the homes in rural areas. We propose the novel Ngara Access system where the central access point (AP) is equipped with a uniform circular array (UCA) installed on a high tower while each UT is equipped with a directional antenna free of clutter, providing predominantly line-of-sight (LoS) channel environment. Using a three dimensional geometric optics based channel model, we provide bit error probability simulation results which show that the spectral efficiency of the proposed system can be improved linearly as a function of the number of antenna elements at AP, without increasing the total transmitting power, provided a half wavelength antenna spacing is maintained and user groups of four or more are used to avoid ill-conditioned channel. Hardware demonstrators based on the proposed system have achieved the system spectral efficiency of 20 bits/s/Hz in an actual rural environment and of 67 bits/s/Hz in a laboratory environment at a lower UHF band. | 2010 | Frequency-Domain Digital Calibration and Beamforming with Wideband Antenna ArrayabstractThis paper presents a joint channel and mutual coupling estimation technique for wideband antenna array to achieve high speed wireless communications in the millimetre-wave frequency bands. The estimated channel frequency responses and mutual coupling matrix can be used to digitally calibrate a wideband antenna array in the frequency-domain, followed by digital beamforming. Experiments are carried out using a four-element receive array prototype in the E-band (71-76 GHz) to demonstrate the frequency-domain digital calibration and beamforming performance. The results show that both the mutual coupling and wideband effects are effectively mitigated by the proposed technique and a 11.5 dBi array gain is achieved which is very close to that of an ideal four-element antenna array. | 2010 | Design Criteria of Uniform Circular Array for Multi-User MIMO in Rural AreasabstractWhen multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) is applied to predominantly line-of-sight (LoS) environments, such as in the case of fixed wireless access in rural areas where a central access point (AP) equipped with an antenna array with NAPantenna elements serves NUTuser terminals (UTs) each equipped with a single antenna, the problem of ill-conditioned channels arises. This paper investigates the performance of zero-forcing preceding based MU-MIMO downlink when the AP is equipped with a uniform circular array (UCA) in an LoS environment. The performance is analyzed as a function of the spacing and the number of AP UCA antenna elements for NAP≥ NUT. The analysis reveals a complex yet orderly pattern of the performance nulls indicating different optimal antenna spacing for different number of antenna elements. The performance nulls can be largely eliminated by employing NAP≥ 2NUT. Hajime Suzuki, Douglas B. Hayman, Joseph Pathikulangara, Iain B. Collings, Zhuo Chen 0001, Rodney Kendall |

| 2009 | The Murchison Widefield Array: Design OverviewabstractThe Murchison Widefield Array is a dipole-based aperture array synthesis telescope designed to operate in the 80-300 MHz frequency range. It is capable of a wide range of science investigations but is initially focused on three key science projects: detection and characterization of three-dimensional brightness temperature fluctuations in the 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen during the epoch of reionization (EoR) at redshifts from six to ten; solar imaging and remote sensing of the inner heliosphere via propagation effects on signals from distant background sources; and high-sensitivity exploration of the variable radio sky. The array design features 8192 dual-polarization broadband active dipoles, arranged into 512 ldquotilesrdquo comprising 16 dipoles each. The tiles are quasi-randomly distributed over an aperture 1.5 km in diameter, with a small number of outliers extending to 3 km. All tile-tile baselines are correlated in custom field-programmable gate array based hardware, yielding a Nyquist-sampled instantaneous monochromaticuvcoverage and unprecedented point spread function quality. The correlated data are calibrated in real time using novel position-dependent self-calibration algorithms. The array is located in the Murchison region of outback Western Australia. This region is characterized by extremely low population density and a superbly radio-quiet environment, allowing full exploitation of the instrumental capabilities. Colin J. Lonsdale, Roger J.
