2026 On Polynomial-Time Decidability of k-Negations Fragments of First-Order Theories
abstract
This paper introduces a generic framework that provides sufficient conditions for guaranteeing polynomial-time decidability of fixed-negation fragments of first-order theories that adhere to certain fixed-parameter tractability requirements. It enables deciding sentences of such theories with arbitrary existential quantification, conjunction and a fixed number of negation symbols in polynomial time. It was recently shown by Nguyen and Pak [SIAM J. Comput. 51(2): 1--31 (2022)] that an even more restricted such fragment of Presburger arithmetic (the first-order theory of the integers with addition and order) is NP-hard. In contrast, by application of our framework, we show that the fixed negation fragment of weak Presburger arithmetic, which drops the order relation from Presburger arithmetic in favour of equality, is decidable in polynomial time. We give two further examples of instantiations of our framework, showing polynomial-time decidability of the fixed negation fragments of weak linear real arithmetic and of the restriction of Presburger arithmetic in which each inequality contains at most one variable.

2026 Universal quantification makes automatic structures hard to decide
abstract
Automatic structures are first-order structures whose universe and relations can be represented as regular languages. It follows from the standard closure properties of regular languages that the first-order theory of an automatic structure is decidable. While existential quantifiers can be eliminated in linear time by application of a homomorphism, universal quantifiers are commonly eliminated via the identity $\forall{x}. Φ\equiv \neg (\exists{x}. \neg Φ)$. If $Φ$ is represented in the standard way as an NFA, a priori this approach results in a doubly exponential blow-up. However, the recent literature has shown that there are classes of automatic structures for which universal quantifiers can be eliminated by different means without this blow-up by treating them as first-class citizens and not resorting to double complementation. While existing lower bounds for some classes of automatic structures show that a singly exponential blow-up is unavoidable when eliminating a universal quantifier, it is not known whether there may be better approaches that avoid the naïve doubly exponential blow-up, perhaps at least in restricted settings. In this paper, we answer this question negatively and show that there is a family of NFA representing automatic relations for which the minimal NFA recognising the language after eliminating a single universal quantifier is doubly exponential, and deciding whether this language is empty is EXPSPACE-complete. The techniques underlying our EXPSPACE lower bound further enable us to establish new lower bounds for some fragments of Büchi arithmetic with a fixed number of quantifier alternations.

2024 Reachability in Fixed VASS: Expressiveness and Lower Bounds
abstract
Abstract The recent years have seen remarkable progress in establishing the complexity of the reachability problem for vector addition systems with states (VASS), equivalently known as Petri nets. Existing work primarily considers the case in which both the VASS as well as the initial and target configurations are part of the input. In this paper, we investigate the reachability problem in the setting where the VASS and the final configuration are fixed and only the initial configuration is variable. We show that fixed VASS fully express arithmetic with counting on initial segments of the natural numbers. It follows that there is a very weak reduction from any fixed such number-theoretic predicate (e.g. square-freeness or “ $$N_1$$ N 1 is the number of primes smaller than $$N_2$$ N 2 ”) to reachability in fixed VASS where configurations are presented in unary. If configurations are given in binary, we show that there is a fixed VASS with five counters whose reachability problem is PSPACE-hard.

2024 Integer Programming with GCD Constraints
abstract
We study the non-linear extension of integer programming with greatest common divisor constraints of the form gcd(f, g) ~ d, where f and g are linear polynomials, d is a positive integer, and ~ is a relation among ≤, = ≠, = and ≥. We show that the feasibility problem for these systems is in NP, and that an optimal solution minimizing a linear objective function, if it exists, has polynomial bit length. To show these results, we identify an expressive fragment of the existential theory of the integers with addition and divisibility that admits solutions of polynomial bit length. It was shown by Lipshitz [Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 235, pp. 271-283, 1978] that this theory adheres to a local-to-global principle in the following sense: a formula Φ is equi-satisfiable with a formula Ψ in this theory such that Ψ has a solution if and only if Ψ has a solution modulo every prime p. We show that in our fragment, only a polynomial number of primes of polynomial bit length need to be considered, and that the solutions modulo prime numbers can be combined to yield a solution to Φ of polynomial bit length. As a technical by-product, we establish a Chinese-remainder-type theorem for systems of congruences and non-congruences showing that solution sizes do not depend on the magnitude of the moduli of non-congruences.

2023 Universal Quantification Makes Automatic Structures Hard to Decide
abstract
Automatic structures are structures whose universe and relations can be represented as regular languages. It follows from the standard closure properties of regular languages that the first-order theory of an automatic structure is decidable. While existential quantifiers can be eliminated in linear time by application of a homomorphism, universal quantifiers are commonly eliminated via the identity ∀x.Φ≡¬(∃x.¬Φ). If Φ is represented in the standard way as an NFA, a priori this approach results in a doubly exponential blow-up.

2023 Computing All Facts Entailed By An LTL Specification
abstract
We study the problem of efficiently computing all (usually infinitely many) facts which are entailed by a specification written in linear temporal logic (LTL)-a standard formalism for specifying and verifying properties of computations in reactive systems. This problem can be seen as a generalisation of the standard entailment checking, but whose output provides a much wider understanding of the system’s behaviour. We show that in full LTL the problem can be solved in doubly exponential time, whereas for Horn fragments of LTL, which can be seen as temporal logic programs, the problem can be solved in exponential or only quadratic time, depending on the allowed temporal operators in the input formula. Moreover, we show that all these bounds are optimal. We also implement and experimentally compare two techniques for solving the problem: an automata-based algorithm for full LTL and a materialisation-based algorithm for Horn fragments. The obtained results suggest practical usefulness of our approach.

2022 Quantifier elimination for counting extensions of Presburger arithmetic
abstract
Abstract We give a new quantifier elimination procedure for Presburger arithmetic extended with a unary counting quantifier $$\exists ^{= x} y\, \mathrm {\Phi }$$ ∃ = x y Φ that binds to the variable $$x$$ x the number of different $$y$$ y satisfying $$\mathrm {\Phi }$$ Φ . While our procedure runs in non-elementary time in general, we show that it yields nearly optimal elementary complexity results for expressive counting extensions of Presburger arithmetic, such as the threshold counting quantifier $$\exists ^{\ge c} y\, \mathrm {\Phi }$$ ∃ ≥ c y Φ that requires that the number of different y satisfying $$\mathrm {\Phi }$$ Φ be at least $$c\in \mathbb {N}$$ c ∈ N , where c can succinctly be defined by a Presburger formula. Our results are cast in terms of what we call the monadically-guarded fragment of Presburger arithmetic with unary counting quantifiers, for which we develop a 2ExpSpace decision procedure.

2022 Geometric decision procedures and the VC dimension of linear arithmetic theories
abstract
This paper resolves two open problems on linear integer arithmetic (LIA), also known as Presburger arithmetic. First, we give a triply exponential geometric decision procedure for LIA, i.e., a procedure based on manipulating semilinear sets. This matches the running time of the best quantifier elimination and automata-based procedures. Second, building upon our first result, we give a doubly exponential upper bound on the Vapnik–Chervonenkis (VC) dimension of sets definable in LIA, proving a conjecture of D. Nguyen and I. Pak [Combinatorica 39, pp. 923–932, 2019].

2022 Higher-Order Quantified Boolean Satisfiability
abstract
The Boolean satisfiability problem plays a central role in computational complexity and is often used as a starting point for showing NP lower bounds. Generalisations such as Succinct SAT, where a Boolean formula is succinctly represented as a Boolean circuit, have been studied in the literature in order to lift the Boolean satisfiability problem to higher complexity classes such as NEXP. While, in theory, iterating this approach yields complete problems for k-NEXP for all k > 0, using such iterations of Succinct SAT is at best tedious when it comes to proving lower bounds. The main contribution of this paper is to show that the Boolean satisfiability problem has another canonical generalisation in terms of higher-order Boolean functions that is arguably more suitable for showing lower bounds beyond NP. We introduce a family of problems HOSAT(k,d), k ≥ 0, d ≥ 1, in which variables are interpreted as Boolean functions of order at most k and there are d quantifier alternations between functions of order exactly k. We show that the unbounded HOSAT problem is TOWER-complete, and that HOSAT(k,d) is complete for the weak k-EXP hierarchy with d alternations for fixed k,d ≥ 1 and d odd. We illustrate the usefulness of HOSAT by characterising the complexity of weak Presburger arithmetic, the first-order theory of the integers with addition and equality but without order. It has been a long-standing open problem whether weak Presburger arithmetic has the same complexity as standard Presburger arithmetic. We answer this question affirmatively, even for the negation-free fragment and the Horn fragment of weak Presburger arithmetic.

2021 On Deciding Linear Arithmetic Constraints Over p-adic Integers for All Primes
abstract
Given an existential formula Φ of linear arithmetic over p-adic integers together with valuation constraints, we study the p-universality problem which consists of deciding whether Φ is satisfiable for all primes p, and the analogous problem for the closely related existential theory of Büchi arithmetic. Our main result is a coNEXP upper bound for both problems, together with a matching lower bound for existential Büchi arithmetic. On a technical level, our results are obtained from analysing properties of a certain class of p-automata, finite-state automata whose languages encode sets of tuples of natural numbers.

2021 Directed Reachability for Infinite-State Systems
abstract
Abstract Numerous tasks in program analysis and synthesis reduce to deciding reachability in possibly infinite graphs such as those induced by Petri nets. However, the Petri net reachability problem has recently been shown to require non-elementary time, which raises questions about the practical applicability of Petri nets as target models. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for efficiently semi-deciding the reachability problem for Petri nets in practice. Our key insight is that computationally lightweight over-approximations of Petri nets can be used as distance oracles in classical graph exploration algorithms such as $$\mathsf {A}^{*}$$ A ∗ and greedy best-first search. We provide and evaluate a prototype implementation of our approach that outperforms existing state-of-the-art tools, sometimes by orders of magnitude, and which is also competitive with domain-specific tools on benchmarks coming from program synthesis and concurrent program analysis.

2021 The Reachability Problem for Two-Dimensional Vector Addition Systems with States
abstract
We prove that the reachability problem for two-dimensional vector addition systems with states is NL-complete or PSPACE-complete, depending on whether the numbers in the input are encoded in unary or binary. As a key underlying technical result, we show that, if a configuration is reachable, then there exists a witnessing path whose sequence of transitions is contained in a bounded language defined by a regular expression of pseudo-polynomially bounded length. This, in turn, enables us to prove that the lengths of minimal reachability witnesses are pseudo-polynomially bounded.

2021 Affine Extensions of Integer Vector Addition Systems with States
abstract
We study the reachability problem for affine $\mathbb{Z}$-VASS, which are integer vector addition systems with states in which transitions perform affine transformations on the counters. This problem is easily seen to be undecidable in general, and we therefore restrict ourselves to affine $\mathbb{Z}$-VASS with the finite-monoid property (afmp-$\mathbb{Z}$-VASS). The latter have the property that the monoid generated by the matrices appearing in their affine transformations is finite. The class of afmp-$\mathbb{Z}$-VASS encompasses classical operations of counter machines such as resets, permutations, transfers and copies. We show that reachability in an afmp-$\mathbb{Z}$-VASS reduces to reachability in a $\mathbb{Z}$-VASS whose control-states grow linearly in the size of the matrix monoid. Our construction shows that reachability relations of afmp-$\mathbb{Z}$-VASS are semilinear, and in particular enables us to show that reachability in $\mathbb{Z}$-VASS with transfers and $\mathbb{Z}$-VASS with copies is PSPACE-complete. We then focus on the reachability problem for affine $\mathbb{Z}$-VASS with monogenic monoids: (possibly infinite) matrix monoids generated by a single matrix. We show that, in a particular case, the reachability problem is decidable for this class, disproving a conjecture about affine $\mathbb{Z}$-VASS with infinite matrix monoids we raised in a preliminary version of this paper. We complement this result by presenting an affine $\mathbb{Z}$-VASS with monogenic matrix monoid and undecidable reachability relation.

2020 On the Size of Finite Rational Matrix Semigroups
abstract
Let $n$ be a positive integer and $\mathcal M$ a set of rational $n \times n$-matrices such that $\mathcal M$ generates a finite multiplicative semigroup. We show that any matrix in the semigroup is a product of matrices in $\mathcal M$ whose length is at most $2^{n (2 n + 3)} g(n)^{n+1} \in 2^{O(n^2 \log n)}$, where $g(n)$ is the maximum order of finite groups over rational $n \times n$-matrices. This result implies algorithms with an elementary running time for deciding finiteness of weighted automata over the rationals and for deciding reachability in affine integer vector addition systems with states with the finite monoid property.

2020 On the Power of Ordering in Linear Arithmetic Theories
abstract
We study the problems of deciding whether a relation definable by a first-order formula in linear rational or linear integer arithmetic with an order relation is definable in absence of the order relation. Over the integers, this problem was shown decidable by Choffrut and Frigeri [Discret. Math. Theor. C., 12(1), pp. 21 - 38, 2010], albeit with non-elementary time complexity. Our contribution is to establish a full geometric characterisation of those sets definable without order which in turn enables us to prove coNP-completeness of this problem over the rationals and to establish an elementary upper bound over the integers. We also provide a complementary Π₂^P lower bound for the integer case that holds even in a fixed dimension. This lower bound is obtained by showing that universality for ultimately periodic sets, i.e., semilinear sets in dimension one, is Π₂^P-hard, which resolves an open problem of Huynh [Elektron. Inf.verarb. Kybern., 18(6), pp. 291 - 338, 1982].

2019 On the Existential Theories of Büchi Arithmetic and Linear p-adic Fields
abstract
We consider the complexity of the satisfiability problems for the existential fragment of Büchi arithmetic and for the existential fragment of linear arithmetic over p-adic fields. Our main results are that both problems are NP-complete. The NP upper bound for existential linear arithmetic over p-adic fields resolves an open question posed by Weispfenning [J. Symb. Comput., 5(1/2) (1988)] and holds despite the fact that satisfying assignments in both theories may have bit-size super-polynomial in the description of the formula. A key technical contribution is to show that the existence of a path between two states of a finite-state automaton whose language encodes the set of solutions of a given system of linear Diophantine equations can be witnessed in NP.

2019 Presburger arithmetic with stars, rational subsets of graph groups, and nested zero tests
abstract
We study the computational complexity of existential Presburger arithmetic with (possibly nested occurrences of) a Kleene-star operator. In addition to being a natural extension of Presburger arithmetic, our investigation is motivated by two other decision problems. The first problem is the rational subset membership problem in graph groups. A graph group is an infinite group specified by a finite undirected graph. While a characterisation of graph groups with a decidable rational subset membership problem was given by Lohrey and Steinberg [J. Algebra, 320(2) (2008)], it has been an open problem (i) whether the decidable fragment has elementary complexity and (ii) what is the complexity for each fixed graph group. The second problem is the reachability problem for integer vector addition systems with states and nested zero tests. We prove that the satisfiability problem for existential Pres-burger arithmetic with stars is NEXP-complete and that all three problems are polynomially inter-reducible. Moreover, we consider for each problem a variant with a fixed parameter: We fix the star-height in the logic, a graph parameter for the membership problem, and the number of distinct zero-tests in the integer vector addition systems. We establish NP-completeness of all problems with fixed parameters. In particular, this enables us to obtain a complete description of the complexity landscape of the rational subset membership problem for fixed graph groups: If the graph is a clique, the problem is N L-complete. If the graph is a disjoint union of cliques, it is P-complete. If it is a transitive forest (and not a union of cliques), the problem is NP-complete. Otherwise, the problem is undecidable.

Quantified integer programming is the problem of deciding assertions of the form Q_k x_k ... forall x_2 exists x_1 : A * x >= c where vectors of variables x_k,..,x_1 form the vector x, all variables are interpreted over N (alternatively, over Z), and A and c are a matrix and vector over Z of appropriate sizes. 2017 Logics for continuous reachability in Petri nets and vector addition systems with states
abstract
This paper studies sets of rational numbers definable by continuous Petri nets and extensions thereof. First, we identify a polynomial-time decidable fragment of existential FO(ℚ,+,<;) and show that the sets of rationals definable in this fragment coincide with reachability sets of continuous Petri nets. Next, we introduce and study continuous vector addition systems with states (CVASS), which are vector addition systems with states in which counters may hold non-negative rational values, and in which the effect of a transition can be scaled by a positive rational number smaller or equal to one. This class strictly generalizes continuous Petri nets by additionally allowing for discrete control-state information. We prove that reachability sets of CVASS are equivalent to the sets of rational numbers definable in existential FO(ℚ,+,<;) from which we can conclude that reachability in CVASS is NP-complete. Finally, our results explain and yield as corollaries a number of polynomial-time algorithms for decision problems that have recently been studied in the literature.

2017 Computing quantiles in Markov chains with multi-dimensional costs
abstract
Probabilistic systems that accumulate quantities such as energy or cost are naturally modelled by cost chains, which are Markov chains whose transitions are labelled with a vector of numerical costs. Computing information on the probability distribution of the total accumulated cost is a fundamental problem in this model. In this paper, we study the so-called cost problem, which is to compute quantiles of the total cost, such as the median cost or the probability of large costs. While it is an open problem whether such probabilities are always computable or even rational, we present an algorithm that allows to approximate the probabilities with arbitrary precision. The algorithm is simple to state and implement, and exploits strong results from graph theory such as the so-called BEST theorem for efficiently computing the number of Eulerian circuits in a directed graph. Moreover, our algorithm enables us to show that a decision version of the cost problem lies in the counting hierarchy, a counting analogue to the polynomial-time hierarchy that contains the latter and is included in PSPACE. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of our algorithm by evaluating it experimentally.

Given finite-state automata (or context-free grammars) A,B over the same alphabet and a Parikh vector p, we study the complexity of deciding whether the number of words in the language of A with Parikh image p is greater than the number of such words in the language of B. Recently, this problem turned out to be tightly related to the cost problem for weighted Markov chains. We classify the complexity according to whether A and B are deterministic, the size of the alphabet, and the encoding of p (binary or unary).

2017 The Logical View on Continuous Petri Nets
abstract
Continuous Petri nets are a relaxation of classical discrete Petri nets in which transitions can be fired a fractional number of times, and consequently places may contain a fractional number of tokens. Such continuous Petri nets are an appealing object to study, since they over-approximate the set of reachable configurations of their discrete counterparts, and their reachability problem is known to be decidable in polynomial time. The starting point of this article is to show that the reachability relation for continuous Petri nets is definable by a sentence of linear size in the existential theory of the rationals with addition and order. Using this characterization, we obtain decidability and complexity results for a number of classical decision problems for continuous Petri nets. In particular, we settle the open problem about the precise complexity of reachability set inclusion. Finally, we show how continuous Petri nets can be incorporated inside the classical backward coverability algorithm for discrete Petri nets as a pruning heuristic to tackle the symbolic state explosion problem. The cornerstone of the approach we present is that our logical characterization enables us to leverage the power of modern SMT-solvers to yield a highly performant and robust decision procedure for coverability in Petri nets. We demonstrate the applicability of our approach on a set of standard benchmarks from the literature.

2016 The Taming of the Semi-Linear Set
abstract
Semi-linear sets, which are rational subsets of the monoid (Z^d,+), have numerous applications in theoretical computer science. Although semi-linear sets are usually given implicitly, by formulas in Presburger arithmetic or by other means, the effect of Boolean operations on semi-linear sets in terms of the size of description has primarily been studied for explicit representations. In this paper, we develop a framework suitable for implicitly presented semi-linear sets, in which the size of a semi-linear set is characterized by its norm—the maximal magnitude of a generator. We put together a toolbox of operations and decompositions for semi-linear sets which gives bounds in terms of the norm (as opposed to just the bit-size of the description), a unified presentation, and simplified proofs. This toolbox, in particular, provides exponentially better bounds for the complement and set-theoretic difference. We also obtain bounds on unambiguous decompositions and, as an application of the toolbox, settle the complexity of the equivalence problem for exponent-sensitive commutative grammars.

Branching VASS (BVASS) generalise vector addition systems with states by allowing for special branching transitions that can non-deterministically distribute a counter value between two control states. A run of a BVASS consequently becomes a tree, and reachability is to decide whether a given configuration is the root of a reachability tree. This paper shows P-completeness of reachability in BVASS in dimension one, the first decidability result for reachability in a subclass of BVASS known so far. Moreover, we show that coverability and boundedness in BVASS in dimension one are P-complete as well.

2016 Tightening the Complexity of Equivalence Problems for Commutative Grammars
abstract
Given two finite-state automata, are the Parikh images of the languages they generate equivalent? This problem was shown decidable in coNEXP by Huynh in 1985 within the more general setting of context-free commutative grammars. Huynh conjectured that a Pi_2^P upper bound might be possible, and Kopczynski and To established in 2010 such an upper bound when the size of the alphabet is fixed. The contribution of this paper is to show that the language equivalence problem for regular and context-free commutative grammars is actually coNEXP-complete. In addition, our lower bound immediately yields further coNEXP-completeness results for equivalence problems for regular commutative expressions, reversal-bounded counter automata and communication-free Petri nets. Finally, we improve both lower and upper bounds for language equivalence for exponent-sensitive commutative grammars.

2015 Reachability in Two-Dimensional Vector Addition Systems with States Is PSPACE-Complete

Known to be decidable since 1981, there still remains a huge gap between the best known lower and upper bounds for the reach ability problem for vector addition systems with states (VASS). Here the problem is shown PSPACE-complete in the two-dimensional case, vastly improving on the doubly exponential time bound established in 1986 by Howell, Rosier, Huynh and Yen. Cover ability and bounded ness for two-dimensional VASS are also shown PSPACE-complete, and reach ability in two-dimensional VASS and in integer VASS under unary encoding are considered.

2008 Complexity of Subsumption in the [Escr ][Lscr ] Family of Description Logics: Acyclic and Cyclic TBoxes
abstract
We perform an exhaustive study of the complexity of subsumption in the ℰℒ family of lightweight description logics w.r.t. acyclic and cyclic TBoxes. It turns out that there are interesting members of this family for which subsumption w.r.t. cyclic TBoxes is tractable, whereas it is EXPTIME-complete w.r.t. general TBoxes. For other extensions that are intractable w.r.t. general TBoxes, we establish intractability already for acyclic and cyclic TBoxes.
