2009 Impact of WiMAX interference on MB-OFDM UWB systems: analysis and mitigation
abstract
This paper presents an analysis of the performance of the multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) system for ultra wideband (UWB) communication in the presence of interference from IEEE 802.16 WiMAX systems operating in the 3.5 GHz band. We present an exact analysis of the uncoded bit error rate (BER) of the MB-OFDM system, based on Laplace transform techniques. We also present a simple Gaussian approximation for the WiMAX interference, and establish its relative accuracy and usefulness by means of comparison with the exact analysis and simulations. Such a Gaussian approximation is especially useful for simplified performance analysis, as well as for the design of interference mitigation techniques. Motivated by the Gaussian approximation, we propose a simple two-stage interference mitigation technique for coded MB-OFDM transmissions, consisting of interference spectrum estimation during silent periods followed by appropriate bit metric weighting during Viterbi decoding. We compare parametric and non-parametric spectrum estimation techniques for various scenarios of interest. In the presence of WiMAX interference, the two-stage interference mitigation provides substantial gains in performance in return for modest increases in complexity and without requiring any modifications to the MB-OFDM transmitter or signal structure.

2008 Error Rate Analysis for Bit-Loaded Coded OFDM
abstract
Bit-loaded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with convolutional coding is a powerful technique for transmission over quasi-static frequency-selective fading channels. Motivated by the lack of appropriate error rate analysis techniques for this popular type of system and channel model, we develop a novel analytical method for bit error rate (BER) estimation of bit-loaded coded OFDM systems operating over frequency-selective quasi-static channels with non- ideal interleaving. To illustrate the application of the proposed analysis, we compare the performance of a number of OFDM bit-loading schemes applied to Multiband OFDM (MB-OFDM) for Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radio, and to IEEE 802.11a/g systems for wireless local area networks (WLANs). We also propose and evaluate a hybrid loading scheme which selects the best loading for each channel realization from amongst a number of candidates.

2007 Error Rate Analysis for Coded Multicarrier Systems Over Quasi-Static Fading Channels
abstract
Several recent standards such as IEEE 802.11a/g, IEEE 802.16, and European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) for high data-rate ultra-wideband (UWB), employ bit-interleaved convolutionally coded multicarrier modulation over quasi-static fading channels. Motivated by the lack of appropriate error rate analysis techniques for this popular type of system and channel model, we present two novel analytical methods for bit error rate (BER) estimation of coded multicarrier systems operating over frequency-selective quasi-static channels with nonideal interleaving. In the first method, the approximate performance of the system is calculated for each realization of the channel, which is suitable for obtaining the outage BER performance (a common performance measure, for e.g., MB-OFDM systems). The second method assumes Rayleigh distributed frequency-domain subcarrier channel gains and knowledge of their correlation matrix, and can be used to directly obtain the average BER performance. Both methods are applicable to convolutionally coded interleaved multicarrier systems employing quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), and are also able to account for narrowband interference (modeled as a sum of tone interferers). To illustrate the application of the proposed analysis, both methods are used to study the performance of a tone-interference-impaired MB-OFDM system.

2007 Performance Analysis and Enhancement of Multiband OFDM for UWB Communications
abstract
In this paper, we analyze the frequency-hopping orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system known as Multiband OFDM for high-rate wireless personal area networks (WPANs) based on ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission. Besides considering the standard, we also propose and study system performance enhancements through the application of Turbo and Repeat-Accumulate (RA) codes, as well as OFDM bit-loading. Our methodology consists of (a) a study of the channel model developed under IEEE 802.15 for UWB from a frequency-domain perspective suited for OFDM transmission, (b) development and quantification of appropriate information-theoretic performance measures, (c) comparison of these measures with simulation results for the Multiband OFDM standard proposal as well as our proposed extensions, and (d) the consideration of the influence of practical, imperfect channel estimation on the performance. We find that the current Multiband OFDM standard sufficiently exploits the frequency selectivity of the UWB channel, and that the system performs in the vicinity of the channel cutoff rate. Turbo codes and a reduced-complexity clustered bit-loading algorithm improve the system power efficiency by over 6 dB at a data rate of 480 Mbps.

2005 Performance analysis of multiband OFDM for UWB communication
abstract
The frequency-hopping orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) proposal, known as multiband OFDM, is a strong contender for the physical layer IEEE standard for high-rate wireless personal area networks (WPANs) bused on ultra-wideband (UWB) transmission. In this paper we analyze the performance of the multiband OFDM proposal. To this end, we (a) study the channel model developed under IEEE 802.15 for UWB radio from a frequency-domain perspective suited for OFDM transmission, (b) develop and quantify the appropriate information-theoretic performance measures, (c) compare these measures with simulation results for multiband OFDM systems, and (d) consider the influence of practical, imperfect channel estimation on the performance.

2002 Performance evaluation of TCP/IP in Bluetooth based systems
abstract
In a TCP/IP connection over a Bluetooth wireless link, the temporal correlation of errors improves performance slightly at low error rates. At a certain cutoff point, performance decreases dramatically due to TCP/IP timeouts, retransmits, and window shrinking. When two channels are modelled by both spatial and temporal correlation, the effect of "correlation sharing" can readily be seen.
