2023 Masked Retraining Teacher-Student Framework for Domain Adaptive Object Detection
abstract
Domain adaptive Object Detection (DAOD) leverages a labeled domain (source) to learn an object detector generalizing to a novel domain without annotation (target). Recent advances use a teacher-student framework, i.e., a student model is supervised by the pseudo labels from a teacher model. Though great success, they suffer from the limited number of pseudo boxes with incorrect predictions caused by the domain shift, misleading the student model to get sub-optimal results. To mitigate this problem, we propose Masked Retraining Teacher-student framework (MRT) which leverages masked autoencoder and selective retraining mechanism on detection transformer. Specifically, we present a customized design of masked autoencoder branch, masking the multi-scale feature maps of target images and reconstructing features by the encoder of the student model and an auxiliary decoder. This helps the student model capture target domain characteristics and become a more data-efficient learner to gain knowledge from the limited number of pseudo boxes. Furthermore, we adopt selective retraining mechanism, periodically re-initializing certain parts of the student parameters with masked autoencoder refined weights to allow the model to jump out of the local optimum biased to the incorrect pseudo labels. Experimental results on three DAOD benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Code can be found at https://github.com/JeremyZhao1998/MRT-release.

2022 Multispectral Semantic Land Cover Segmentation From Aerial Imagery With Deep Encoder-Decoder Network
abstract
Developing accurate algorithms for agricultural pattern recognition from aerial imagery has become increasingly important due to the prevalence of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This letter introduces a deep encoder–decoder network for semantic land cover segmentation, where the goal is to classify six anomaly categories from multispectral aerial imagery. Since aerial imagery exhibits specific characteristics and visual challenges in this imaging domain, existing semantic segmentation models are not plug-and-play. Starting from a state-of-the-art segmentation model, we present a step-by-step analysis of key challenges and also reveal our observations in addressing these challenges. In particular, we investigate on how to exploit data prior knowledge, how to deal with sample imbalance, and how to encode global semantic and contextual information to improve segmentation. Experiments on a recent large-scale aerial land cover data set demonstrate that our method achieves compelling performance against other state-of-the-art approaches. Our results and insights can provide references for practitioners working in this field when dealing with similar segmentation problems.

2020 PCNN: Pattern-based Fine-Grained Regular Pruning Towards Optimizing CNN Accelerators
abstract
Weight pruning is a powerful technique to realize model compression. We propose PCNN, a fine-grained regular 1D pruning method. A novel index format called Sparsity Pattern Mask (SPM) is presented to encode the sparsity in PCNN. Leveraging SPM with limited pruning patterns and non-zero sequences with equal length, PCNN can be efficiently employed in hardware. Evaluated on VGG-16 and ResNet-18, our PCNN achieves the compression rate up to 8.4× with only 0.2% accuracy loss. We also implement a pattern-aware architecture in 55nm process, achieving up to 9.0× speedup and 28.39 TOPS/W efficiency with only 3.1% on-chip memory overhead of indices.
