| 2023 | Green IT and Corporate Social Responsibility for SustainabilityabstractThe implementation of green information technology (Green IT) contributes to the accomplishment of environmental sustainability. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) discipline demonstrates the responsibility of enterprises that impacts society. CSR has a strong effect to the economic and societal development enforced by corporate actions. The purpose of this study is to deliberate the emergent effect of environmental sustainability and the possibility of reaching sustainability in society through the joint effort of corporate social responsibility and Green IT. This study proposes a value model that combines the operational procedures of turning CSR and Green IT into the desired value outcome. Two corporate experience analyses are used to illustrate this model’s four stages value creation process. David C. Chou, Houn-Gee Chen, Binshan Lin |

| 2013 | Reducing User-Related Risks with User-Developer PartneringabstractRisks related to users are a major concern in the development of information systems (IS). This study examines whether partnering efforts made between users and IS developers are successful in reducing the realization of user-related risks during system development. We employ risk factors identified in the literature to drive a confirmation of risk reduction via partnering efforts between users and developers. A survey of system development project managers provides the data for confirmation. Indications from the survey include risk reducing benefits from establishing problem resolution, continuous improvement, and common goals at the commencement of any new development project. This study highlights that a partnership between users and developers during the development process mitigates certain risks and improves eventual outcomes of IS development projects. | 2013 | Risk Dynamics Throughout the System Development Life CycleabstractRisks must be controlled during the development of a new system in order to best promote success. However, resources that can be dedicated to controlling risks are often limited. To best design an effective and efficient portfolio of controls, it is important to understand if and how risks change during the course of a system development. Using a framework developed from socio-technical theories, we conduct a multiple case study to determine the pattern of risk dynamics through the stages of the development life cycle. Risks associated with structural concerns dominate and increase as the life cycle progress, while technology risks are not very common early, but become so later. Risks associated with tasks and actor are common and do not change much in incidence. The results indicate the value of the socio-technical model in identifying risks and how control portfolios should change over the course of a system development. | 2009 | Sharing private information online: the mediator effect of social exchangeabstractAdvances in information technology facilitate extensive collection and analysis of personal information for the purpose of strategic use by websites or companies. However, the typical reluctance of web users in sharing personal information significantly reduces such opportunity enabled by information technology. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to construct and empirically assess a causal model that explains how web users intend to share their personal information online. In particular, this theoretical model proposes that social exchange attitude mediates the impacts of trust and privacy concern on the intention of sharing personal information. An sample as large as 1249 is collected to test the proposed model. The empirical data strongly supports the hypotheses and suggests that trust and concern for privacy directly and indirectly affects the intention to share personal information via the attitude of social exchange. The direct and indirect impacts of trust are both positive. On the other hand, the direct impact of concern for privacy is negative, whereas the indirect impact is positive. | 2008 | Online privacy control via anonymity and pseudonym: Cross-cultural implicationsabstractPrivacy's exact nature needs to reflect the contemporary view of a society. A growing number of online users demand the protection of their personal privacy via anonymity and pseudonym. The efficacy of these two privacy controls in different online environments is unknown. This study applies social psychology theories to explore the relationship between these personal sentiments—authoritative personality, empathy, fear of negative evaluation, self-esteem, and motives of online privacy rights. We conducted a quasi-experiment by manipulating four online environments (personal e-mail exchange, members-only newsgroup, public newsgroup, and online chat room), and three user identification modes (real name, anonymity and pseudonym). More than 600 subjects from the USA and Taiwan participated in the experimental study. The results of path analysis confirm the effects of some personal sentiments on the motives of online privacy rights. The study concludes with theoretical and practical implications for the roles of privacy in the online society. Houn-Gee Chen, Charlie C. Chen, Louis Lo, Samuel C. Yang |

| 1995 | Operator scheduling approaches in group technology cells-information request analysisabstractThis paper examines the group technology (GT) scheduling problems, in which each cell is staffed with one operator. The role of the operator is to load jobs into machines, to unload jobs from machines, and to transport jobs between machines. Since the productivity of the cell is directly proportional to the level of productive work performed by the operator, the manner in which the operator moves between machines affects productivity. Although the optimal operator schedule/walking-pattern has been shown to be the best operator schedule for well-structured production environments, the underlying assumptions of the optimal schedule often limit its practical implications. With the current popularity of gust-in-time production, the problem of finding an efficient operator schedule/walking-pattern has become a critical issue in shop floor scheduling. According to the information requirements, this paper devises three heuristic approaches: a scheduling rule, multiple scheduling rules (MSR), and cycle switching rules (CSR). This paper shows that there is a tradeoff between the quality of the resulting schedule and the information contents of heuristics used.> Houn-Gee Chen |

| 1992 | Nested IF-THEN-ELSE Constructs in End-User Computing: Personality and Aptitude as Predictors of Programming AbilityabstractAbstract Information technology has assumed an important role in organizations during the past decade. No longer the private preserve of small groups of computer specialists, end-user computing is placing information technology into the hands of employees at all levels and in virtually all functional areas. This study attempts to gain a fuller understanding of factors associated with the ability to use IF-THEN-ELSE (or Nested IF-THEN-ELSE) constructs in end-user computing. It proposes a model and summarizes empirical findings which suggest that performance in programming tasks can be partially accounted for by a consideration of personality and aptitude constructs.
