2025 CROSSNEWS: A Cross-Genre Authorship Verification and Attribution Benchmark
abstract
Authorship models have historically generalized poorly to new domains because of the wide distribution of author-identifying signals across domains. In particular, the effects of topic and genre are highly domain-dependent and impact authorship analysis performance greatly. This paper addresses the existing data gap in authorship for these resources by introducing CROSSNEWS, a novel cross-genre dataset that connects formal journalistic articles and casual social media posts. CROSSNEWS is the largest authorship dataset of its kind for supporting both verification and attribution tasks, with comprehensive topic and genre annotations. We use CROSSNEWS to demonstrate that current models exhibit poor performance in genre transfer scenarios, underscoring the need for authorship models robust to genre-specific effects. We also explore SELMA, a new LLM embedding approach for large-scale authorship setups that outperforms existing models in both same-genre and cross-genre settings.

2025 Building a Virtual Member of a Community of Practice
abstract
We describe a virtual member of a knowledge management Community of Practice (CoP), called ATHENA, that knows an individual, his tasks, his organization, and the community. ATHENA employs an agentic chat capability that combines embeddings with knowledge-based faceted search to provide accurate responses to technical questions along with rationale and citations for efficient validation. ATHENA supports natural, in-the-flow capture of task-related insights to share within a CoP, along with proactive dissemination of information tied to an individual and his current needs. An evaluation involving 75 professionals from the Oil & Gas sector shows that ATHENA dramatically improved outcomes and productivity on a set of well-planning tasks compared to their use of a state-of-the-art RAG baseline. Interestingly, ATHENA also enabled eight non-experts to perform at expert levels.

2022 Valet: Rule-Based Information Extraction for Rapid Deployment
abstract
We present VALET, a framework for rule-based information extraction written in Python. VALET departs from legacy approaches predicated on cascading finite-state transducers, instead offering direct support for mixing heterogeneous information–lexical, orthographic, syntactic, corpus-analytic–in a succinct syntax that supports context-free idioms. We show how a handful of rules suffices to implement sophisticated matching, and describe a user interface that facilitates exploration for development and maintenance of rule sets. Arguing that rule-based information extraction is an important methodology early in the development cycle, we describe an experiment in which a VALET model is used to annotate examples for a machine learning extraction model. While learning to emulate the extraction rules, the resulting model generalizes them, recognizing valid extraction targets the rules failed to detect.

2019 Joint Workshop on Bibliometric-enhanced Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing for Digital Libraries (BIRNDL 2019)
abstract
The deluge of scholarly publication poses a challenge for scholars find relevant research and policy makers to seek in-depth information and understand research impact. Information retrieval (IR), natural language processing (NLP) and bibliometrics could enhance scholarly search, retrieval and user experience, but their use in digital libraries is not widespread. To address this gap, we propose the 4th Joint Workshop on BIRNDL and the 5th CL-SciSumm Shared Task. We seek to foster collaboration among researchers in NLP, IR and Digital Libraries (DL), and to stimulate the development of new methods in NLP, IR, recommendation systems and scientometrics toward improved scholarly document understanding, analysis, and retrieval at scale.

2005 Evaluating machine learning for information extraction
abstract
Comparative evaluation of Machine Learning (ML) systems used for Information Extraction (IE) has suffered from various inconsistencies in experimental procedures. This paper reports on the results of the Pascal Challenge on Evaluating Machine Learning for Information Extraction, which provides a standardised corpus, set of tasks, and evaluation methodology. The challenge is described and the systems submitted by the ten participants are briefly introduced and their performance is analysed.

2000 Bridging the lexical chasm: statistical approaches to answer-finding
abstract
This paper investigates whether a machine can automatically learn the task of finding, within a large collection of candidate responses, the answers to questions. The learning process consists of inspecting a collection of answered questions and characterizing the relation between question and answer with a statistical model. For the purpose of learning this relation, we propose two sources of data: Usenet FAQ documents and customer service call-center dialogues from a large retail company. We will show that the task of “answer-finding” differs from both document retrieval and tradition question-answering, presenting challenges different from those found in these problems. The central aim of this work is to discover, through theoretical and empirical investigation, those statistical techniques best suited to the answer-finding problem.
