2025 Probabilistic Shaping for Wi-Fi 8
abstract
The IEEE 802.11 working group has formed a new Task Group, 802.11bn, to develop a new amendment to support ultra-high reliability (UHR) for Wi-Fi networks, which will eventually shape what Wi-Fi 8 will look like. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic shaping (PS) scheme to improve the spectrum and power efficiency in medium to high signal to noise ratio (SNR) regime forWi-Fi 8. The integration and compatibility with legacy Wi-Fi systems, as well as other Wi-Fi 8 candidate technologies like unequal modulation (UEQM) are addressed. An architecture with a single low-density parity-check (LDPC) encoder and multiple shaping encoders is devised to adapt to different qualities of spatial channels. Furthermore, we propose practical techniques to resolve issues like error propagation, scrambler re-synchronization, and packet length determination to ensure compatibility with legacy scrambling, subframe detection, and packaging flow. It is shown that the proposed constellation shaping scheme provides average 0.89 dB shaping gains over the legacy Wi-Fi scheme, and the shaping gains remain when UEQM and lifted LDPC are applied.

2004 Constellation shaping for pragmatic turbo-coded modulation with high spectral efficiency
abstract
We propose a new turbo-encoding scheme for high spectral efficiency with performance close to the Gaussian channel capacity. The scheme combines nonuniform signaling on a Gaussian channel with pragmatic turbo-coded modulation (TCM) for simple and flexible implementation. A variable-rate turbo code is followed by a Huffmann code mapping onto nonequiprobable points in a quadrature amplitude modulation constellation. The rate of the turbo code is matched to the Huffmann code by variable puncturing, such that both the input bit rate and the output symbol rate are constant. It is shown that the new scheme provides shaping gains of 0.6 and 0.9 dB, at rates 2 and 3 b/dimension, respectively, compared with the equiprobable pragmatic TCM, and reach about 1 dB from the continuous input Gaussian channel capacity.

2003 An improved pragmatic turbo encoding scheme for high spectral efficiency using constellation shaping
abstract
We propose a new turbo encoding scheme for high spectral efficiency with performance close to the Gaussian channel capacity. The scheme combines nonuniform signaling on a Gaussian channel, and pragmatic turbo coded modulation for simple and flexible implementation. A table is used to map equiprobable input symbols into nonequiprobable points in the QAM constellation. It is shown that the new scheme provides shaping gains of 0.6 dB and 0.93 dB, at rates 2 and 3 bits/dim respectively compared to the equiprobable pragmatic turbo coded modulation, and reach about 1 dB from the Gaussian channel capacity.
