Real-Time Sampling-Based Safe Motion Planning for Robotic Manipulators in Dynamic EnvironmentsabstractIn this article, we present the main features of the dynamic rapidly-exploring generalized bur tree (DRGBT) algorithm, a sampling-based planner for dynamic environments. We provide a detailed time analysis and appropriate scheduling to facilitate a real-time operation. To this end, an extensive analysis is conducted to identify the time-critical routines and their dependence on the number of obstacles. Furthermore, information about the distance to obstacles is used to compute a structure calleddynamic expanded bubbleof free configuration space, which is then utilized to establish sufficient conditions for a guaranteed safe motion of the robot while satisfying all kinematic constraints. An extensive comparative study is conducted to compare the proposed algorithm to competing state-of-the-art methods. Finally, an experimental study on a real robot is carried out covering a variety of scenarios including those with human presence. The results show the effectiveness and feasibility of real-time execution of the proposed motion planning algorithm within a typical sensor-based arrangement, using cheap hardware and sequential architecture, without the necessity for GPUs or heavy parallelization. | 2021 | Path Planning for Robotic Manipulators in Dynamic Environments Using Distance InformationabstractIn this paper, we present a novel algorithm – DRGBT (Dynamic Rapidly-exploring Generalized Bur Tree), intended for motion planning in dynamic environments. The main idea behind DRGBT lies in a so-called adaptive horizon, consisting of a set of prospective target nodes that belong to a predefined $\mathcal{C}$-space path, which originates from the current node. Each node is assigned a weight that depends on relative distances and captured changes in the environment. The algorithm continuously uses a suitable horizon assessment to decide when to trigger the replanning procedure. A comprehensive simulation study is performed, covering a variety of manipulators, where DRGBT is compared to a state-of-the-art algorithm. Results indicate some promising features of the proposed method. Nermin Covic, Bakir Lacevic, Dinko Osmankovic

Improved C-Space Exploration and Path Planning for Robotic Manipulators Using Distance InformationabstractWe present a simple method to quickly explore C-spaces of robotic manipulators and thus facilitate path planning. The method is based on a novel geometrical structure called generalized bur. It is a star-like tree, rooted at a given point in free C-space, with an arbitrary number of guaranteed collision-free edges computed using distance information from the workspace and simple forward kinematics. Generalized bur captures large portions of free C-space, enabling accelerated exploration. The workspace is assumed to be decomposable into a finite set of (possibly overlapping) convex obstacles. When plugged in a suitable RRT-like planning algorithm, generalized burs enable significant performance improvements, while at the same time enabling exact collision-free paths. | 2019 | 3D Mapping Based on Fusion of 2D Laser and IMU Data Acquired by Unmanned Aerial VehicleabstractThe paper deals with the three-dimensional (3D) modelling based on data acquired from 2D laser sensor and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) attached to the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). The used multi-sensor unit produces 2D scans and provides information about Euler angles or quaternions. These angles are used to describe the UAV orientation in 3D space, more precisely the orientation of the laser sensor. In order to generate 3D occupancy map it is necessary to rotate the laser sensor around its axis yielding the 2D scans being mapped on 3D space using quaternions. Inertial sensor and Sweep LiDAR laser measurements are transmitted to the single board computer Odroid XU4 (SBC). The data fusion was performed under ROS (Robot Operating System) installed on the SBC, producing 3D space points. These points are transmitted over the network to the central computer on which the UAV localization and mapping processes are done within the ROS. The effectiveness of the proposed system for 3D modelling of the UAV environment is verified by experiment. Tarik Pozderac, Jasmin Velagic, Dinko Osmankovic

Design of Radiometric Thermography System for Object RecognitionabstractThe paper presents a custom-made radiometric thermography system which provides a full radiometric IR inspection. It contains heterogeneous stereo-vision system with RGB and thermal camera, as well as the processor unit with developed embedded software modules. The software units were realized using C++ programming language within ROS development environment. In order to obtain the better representation of points in the space as well as their projections on the cameras planes, the stereo calibration was performed. The correspondence between RGB and thermal images is represented with homography. The object detection is performed using OpenCV feature detectors, while the recognition is carried out by Hu moments computation and K-means clustering. For the showcase, incandescent light bulbs, LED light bulbs and quartz heaters are detected and recognized as such. The developed system is capable of providing a heterogeneous inspection of heating systems, power lines, etc. Edina Razanica, Ajdin Hamzic, Dinko Osmankovic, Jasmin Velagic

Burs of free C-space: A novel structure for path planningabstractThis paper presents a new approach to C-space exploration and path planning for robotic manipulators using the structure named bur of free C-space. This structure builds upon the so-called bubble, which is a local volume of free C-space, easily computed using the distance information in the workspace. We show how the same distance information can be used to compute the bur that can reach substantially beyond the boundary of the bubble. It is shown how burs can be used to form a rapidly exploring bur tree (RBT): a space-filling tree that resembles RRT. Such a structure can easily be used within a suitably tailored path planning algorithm. Simulation study shows how the RBT-based algorithm outperforms the classical RRT-based method. | 2016 | Rapidly exploring bur trees for optimal motion planningabstractThis paper presents a new approach to C-space exploration and optimal path planning for robotic manipulators and planar scenarios using the structure named bur of free C-space. This structure builds upon the so-called bubble, which is a local volume of free C-space, easily computed using the distance information in the workspace. It is previously shown how burs can be used to form a rapidly exploring bur tree (RBT): a space-filling tree that resembles RRT. Now, we exploit the burs of free C-space approach to develop a new algorithm called RBT*, which is, like RRT* algorithm, provably asymptotically optimal, i.e., such that the cost of the returned solution converges almost surely to the optimum. Burs of free space offer better performance and faster convergence because it enables faster exploration of free space. Dinko Osmankovic, Bakir Lacevic

Performance and quality assessment of R-tree based nearest neighbour search in the scalar field mapping techniqueabstractEnergy efficiency became more relevant recently. This also includes the construction of energy efficient buildings in terms of heat conservation and dissipation. For analysing the energy efficiency several mapping algorithms are proposed that map indoor environments with added thermal information. Also, several algorithms that generate virtual 3D models are recently presented. One of the main parts of these algoritms are nearest neighbour searching techniques. There are several algorithms that enables the use of nearest neighbour (NN) search. In this paper we present the assessment of R-tree based NN queries in the problem of scalar field mapping that maps a measured temperatures onto reconstructed 3D-mesh of indoor environment. The mesh is reconstructed from the point cloud recorded with 3D laser scanner and thermal imaging camera. We present the performance analysis of the R-tree based NN search with different R-tree types. Also, we present the quality of the scalar field mapping produced with employed R-tree based NN search techniques. Dinko Osmankovic, Haris Supic, Jasmin Velagic
