| 2024 | Leveraging Bidirectionl LSTM with CRFs for Pashto TaggingabstractPart-of-speech tagging plays a vital role in text processing and natural language understanding. Very few attempts have been made in the past for tagging Pashto Part-of-Speech. In this work, we present a Long Short-term Memory–based approach for Pashto part-of-speech tagging with special focus on ambiguity resolution. Initially, we created a corpus of Pashto sentences having words with multiple meanings and their tags. We introduce a powerful sentences representation and new architecture for Pashto text processing. The accuracy of the proposed approach is compared with state-of-the-art Hidden Markov Model. Our Model shows 87.60% accuracy for all words excluding punctuation and 95.45% for ambiguous words; however, Hidden Markov Model shows 78.37% and 44.72% accuracy, respectively. Results show that our approach outperforms Hidden Markov Model in Part-of-Speech tagging for Pashto text. Farooq Zaman, Onaiza Maqbool, Jaweria Kanwal |

| 2017 | CommuniMents: A Framework for Detecting Community Based Sentiments for EventsabstractSocial media has revolutionized human communication and styles of interaction. Due to its effectiveness and ease, people have started using it increasingly to share and exchange information, carry out discussions on various events, and express their opinions. Various communities may have diverse sentiments about events and it is an interesting research problem to understand the sentiments of a particular community for a specific event. In this article, the authors propose a framework CommuniMents which enables us to identify the members of a community and measure the sentiments of the community for a particular event. CommuniMents uses automated snowball sampling to identify the members of a community, then fetches their published contents (specifically tweets), pre-processes the contents and measures the sentiments of the community. The authors perform qualitative and quantitative evaluation for a variety of real world events to validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. | 2017 | Improved binary similarity measures for software modularizationabstractVarious binary similarity measures have been employed in clustering approaches to make homogeneous groups of similar entities in the data. These similarity measures are mostly based only on the presence or absence of features. Binary similarity measures have also been explored with different clustering approaches (e.g., agglomerative hierarchical clustering) for software modularization to make software systems understandable and manageable. Each similarity measure has its own strengths and weaknesses which improve and deteriorate the clustering results, respectively. We highlight the strengths of some well-known existing binary similarity measures for software modularization. Furthermore, based on these existing similarity measures, we introduce several improved new binary similarity measures. Proofs of the correctness with illustration and a series of experiments are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of our new binary similarity measures. | 2007 | Hierarchical Clustering for Software Architecture RecoveryabstractGaining an architectural level understanding of a software system is important for many reasons. When the description of a system's architecture does not exist, attempts must be made to recover it. In recent years, researchers have explored the use of clustering for recovering a software system's architecture, given only its source code. The main contributions of this paper are given as follows. First, we review hierarchical clustering research in the context of software architecture recovery and modularization. Second, to employ clustering meaningfully, it is necessary to understand the peculiarities of the software domain, as well as the behavior of clustering measures and algorithms in this domain. To this end, we provide a detailed analysis of the behavior of various similarity and distance measures that may be employed for software clustering. Third, we analyze the clustering process of various well-known clustering algorithms by using multiple criteria, and we show how arbitrary decisions taken by these algorithms during clustering affect the quality of their results. Finally, we present an analysis of two recently proposed clustering algorithms, revealing close similarities in their apparently different clustering approaches. Experiments on four legacy software systems provide insight into the behavior of well-known clustering algorithms and their characteristics in the software domain.
