| 2000 | TCP Performance Analysis on Asymmetric Networks Composed of Satellite and Terrestrial LinksabstractAs the Internet users increase, asymmetric networks which provide asymmetric bandwidth or delay for the uplink and downlink have become a great attraction. However asymmetric networks which use both terrestrial and satellite links at the same time have not been adequately investigated. Therefore, this paper proposes a new formula for TCP performance evaluation for the asymmetric networks. Using this evaluation formula, we calculate the throughput of TCP Reno over the asymmetric networks taking slow start into account. The calculation results are compared with the following: (1) the value based on an existing theoretical formula, (2) the outputs of simulation by NS (Network Simulator), and (3) the experimental results using VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) satellite communication system for satellite links and the Internet for terrestrial links. As a result, it is shown that the new formula is more precise than the one already proposed. Hiroyasu Obata, Kenji Ishida, Junichi Funasaka, Kitsutaro Amano |

| 1978 | Digital Standards Converter by Adaptive Intra-Frame Line InterpolationabstractThis paper introduces a new technique for TV standards conversion called "adaptive intra-frame line interpolation". The configuration and the performance of a digital converter developed by using the technique are also described. In the present converter, an input picture is divided into still and moving areas by measuring frame difference signals, and suitable interpolation parameters are adaptively chosen for each area. This method brings good results to both areas. Especially, the converter has enabled the converted picture to recover high vertical resolution of more than 350 TV lines in still pictures, which has never been obtained by any conventional intra-field line interpolation. | 1972 | TTT System (50 Mbits/s PCM-TDMA System With Time Preassignment and TASI) and Its Satellite Test ResultsabstractAn experimental 50 Mbits/s pulse-code modulation-time-division multiple access (PCM-TDMA) system with time preassignment and time-assignment speech interpolation (TASI) features (called the TTT system) was built for use in a satellite test. This system was designed for application in the INTELSAT IV network and has the channel capacity of more than 700 telephone channels. This capacity can be increased up to twice when pulse-code modulation-time-assignment speech interpolation (PCM-TASI) is adopted. The field test was conducted via INTELSAT III in 1970 and satisfactory results were obtained, which encourages the introduction of the TDMA system for commercial use.
