2015 Multiple Kernel Multivariate Performance Learning Using Cutting Plane Algorithm
abstract
In this paper, we propose a multi-kernel classifier learning algorithm to optimize a given nonlinear and nonsmoonth multivariate classifier performance measure. Moreover, to solve the problem of kernel function selection and kernel parameter tuning, we proposed to construct an optimal kernel by weighted linear combination of some candidate kernels. The learning of the classifier parameter and the kernel weight are unified in a single objective function considering to minimize the upper boundary of the given multivariate performance measure. The objective function is optimized with regard to classifier parameter and kernel weight alternately in an iterative algorithm by using cutting plane algorithm. The developed algorithm is evaluated on two different pattern classification methods with regard to various multivariate performance measure optimization problems. The experiment results show the proposed algorithm outperforms the competing methods.

2015 Supervised Cross-Modal Factor Analysis for Multiple Modal Data Classification
abstract
In this paper we study the problem of learning from multiple modal data for purpose of document classification. In this problem, each document is composed two different modals of data, i.e., An image and a text. Cross-modal factor analysis (CFA) has been proposed to project the two different modals of data to a shared data space, so that the classification of a image or a text can be performed directly in this space. A disadvantage of CFA is that it has ignored the supervision information. In this paper, we improve CFA by incorporating the supervision information to represent and classify both image and text modals of documents. We project both image and text data to a shared data space by factor analysis, and then train a class label predictor in the shared space to use the class label information. The factor analysis parameter and the predictor parameter are learned jointly by solving one single objective function. With this objective function, we minimize the distance between the projections of image and text of the same document, and the classification error of the projection measured by hinge loss function. The objective function is optimized by an alternate optimization strategy in an iterative algorithm. Experiments in two different multiple modal document data sets show the advantage of the proposed algorithm over other CFA methods.

2014 Learning Fine-Grained Image Similarity with Deep Ranking
abstract
Learning fine-grained image similarity is a challenging task. It needs to capture between-class and within-class image differences. This paper proposes a deep ranking model that employs deep learning techniques to learn similarity metric directly from images. It has higher learning capability than models based on hand-crafted features. A novel multiscale network structure has been developed to describe the images effectively. An efficient triplet sampling algorithm is also proposed to learn the model with distributed asynchronized stochastic gradient. Extensive experiments show that the proposed algorithm outperforms models based on hand-crafted visual features and deep classification models.

2014 An Effective Image Representation Method Using Kernel Classification
abstract
The learning of image representation is always the most important problem in computer vision community. In this paper, we propose a novel image representation method by learning and using kernel classifiers. We firstly train classifiers using the one-against-all rule, then use them classify the candidate images, and finally using the classification responses as the new representations. The Euclidean distance between the classification response vectors are used as the new similarity measure. The experimental results from a large scale image database show that the proposed algorithm can outperform the original feature on image retrieval problem.

2010 Google image swirl, a large-scale content-based image browsing system
abstract
We demonstrate the first large-scale image browsing system applied to 200,000 popular queries which utilizes image content to organize image search results. Given a query, the system extracts image content features such as color, shape, local features, face signatures and metadata from up to 1000 image results, and hierarchically clusters them to form an exemplar tree. A dynamic web-based user interface allows the user to navigate this hierarchy, allowing fast and interactive browsing. The exemplars of each cluster provide a comprehensive visual overview of the query results, and allow the user to quickly navigate to the images of interest.

2008 Detecting Objects of Variable Shape Structure With Hidden State Shape Models
abstract
This paper proposes a method for detecting object classes that exhibit variable shape structure in heavily cluttered images. The term "variable shape structure" is used to characterize object classes in which some shape parts can be repeated an arbitrary number of times, some parts can be optional, and some parts can have several alternative appearances. Hidden State Shape Models (HSSMs), a generalization of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), are introduced to model object classes of variable shape structure using a probabilistic framework. A polynomial inference algorithm automatically determines object location, orientation, scale and structure by finding the globally optimal registration of model states with the image features, even in the presence of clutter. Experiments with real images demonstrate that the proposed method can localize objects of variable shape structure with high accuracy. For the task of hand shape localization and structure identification, the proposed method is significantly more accurate than previously proposed methods based on chamfer-distance matching. Furthermore, by integrating simple temporal constraints, the proposed method gains speed-ups of more than an order of magnitude, and produces highly accurate results in experiments on non-rigid hand motion tracking.

2005 MosaicShape: Stochastic Region Grouping with Shape Prior
abstract
A method that combines shape-based object recognition and image segmentation is proposed for shape retrieval from images. Given a shape prior represented in a multi-scale curvature form, the proposed method identifies the target objects in images by grouping oversegmented image regions. The problem is formulated in a unified probabilistic framework, and object segmentation and recognition are accomplished simultaneously by a stochastic Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) mechanism. Within each sampling move during the simulation process, probabilistic region grouping operations are influenced by both the image information and the shape similarity constraint. The latter constraint is measured by a partial shape matching process. A generalized cluster sampling algorithm is presented in A. Barbu and S. Zhu (2003), combined with a large sampling jump and other implementation improvements, and greatly speeds up the overall stochastic process. The proposed method supports the segmentation and recognition of multiple occluded objects in images. Experimental results are provided for both synthetic and real images.
