| 2011 | Object rankingabstractObject ranking is an emerging discipline within information retrieval that is concerned with the ranking of objects, e.g. named entities and their attributes, in context of given a user query, or application. In this tutorial we will address the different aspects involved when building an object ranking system. We will present the state-of-the-art research in object ranking, as well as going into detail about our hands-on experiences when designing and developing the system for object ranking as it is in production at Yahoo! today. This allows for a unique mixture of research and development that will give the participants in-depth insights into the problem of object ranking. Roelof van Zwol, Srinivas Vadrevu |

| 2011 | Scalable clustering of news search resultsabstractIn this paper, we present a system for clustering the search results of a news search engine. The news search interface includes the relevant news articles to a given query organized in terms of related news stories. Here each cluster corresponds to a news story and the news articles are clustered into stories. We present a system that clusters the search results of a news search system in a fast and scalable manner. The clustering system is organized into three components including offline clustering, incremental clustering and realtime clustering. We propose novel techniques for clustering the search results in realtime. The experimental results with large collections of news documents reveal that our system is both scalable and also achieves good accuracy in clustering the news search results. | 2010 | Ranking with auxiliary dataabstractLearning to rank arises in many information retrieval applications, ranging from Web search engine, online advertising to recommendation system. In learning to rank, the performance of a ranking function heavily depends on the number of labeled examples in the training set; on the other hand, obtaining labeled examples for training data is very expensive and time-consuming. This presents a great need for making use of available auxiliary data, i.e., the within-domain unlabeled data and the out-of-domain labeled data. In this paper, we propose a general framework for ranking with auxiliary data, which is applicable to various ranking applications. Under this framework, we derive a generic ranking algorithm to effectively make use of both the within-domain unlabeled data and the out-of-domain labeled data. The proposed algorithm iteratively learns ranking functions for target domain and source domains and enforces their consensus on the unlabeled data in the target domain. | 2010 | Multi-task learning for boosting with application to web search rankingabstractIn this paper we propose a novel algorithm for multi-task learning with boosted decision trees. We learn several different learning tasks with a joint model, explicitly addressing the specifics of each learning task with task-specific parameters and the commonalities between them through shared parameters. This enables implicit data sharing and regularization. We evaluate our learning method on web-search ranking data sets from several countries. Here, multitask learning is particularly helpful as data sets from different countries vary largely in size because of the cost of editorial judgments. Our experiments validate that learning various tasks jointly can lead to significant improvements in performance with surprising reliability. Olivier Chapelle, Pannagadatta K. | 2009 | A risk minimization framework for domain adaptationabstractSupervised learning algorithms usually require high quality labeled training set of large volume. It is often expensive to obtain such labeled examples in every domain of an application. Domain adaptation aims to help in such cases by utilizing data available in related domains. However transferring knowledge from one domain to another is often non trivial due to different data distributions among the domains. Moreover, it is usually very hard to measure and formulate these distribution differences. Hence we introduce a new concept of label-relation function to transfer knowledge among different domains without explicitly formulating the data distribution differences. A novel learning framework, Domain Transfer Risk Minimization (DTRM), is proposed based on this concept. DTRM simultaneously minimizes the empirical risk for the target and the regularized empirical risk for source domain. Under this framework, we further derive a generic algorithm called Domain Adaptation by Label Relation (DALR) that is applicable to various applications in both classification and regression settings. DALR iteratively updates the target hypothesis function and outputs for the source domain until it converges. We provide an in-depth theoretical analysis of DTRM and establish fundamental error bounds. We also experimentally evaluate DALR on the task of ranking search results using real-world data. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithm effectively and robustly utilizes data from source domains under various conditions: different sizes for source domain data; different noise levels for source domain data, and different difficulty levels for target domain data. | 2008 | Identifying regional sensitive queries in web searchabstractIn Web search ranking, the expected results for some queries could vary greatly depending upon location of the user. We name such queries regional sensitive queries. Identifying regional sensitivity of queries is important to meet users' needs. The objective of this work is to identify whether a user expects only regional results for a query. We present three novel features generated from search logs and build a meta query classifier to identify regional sensitive query. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves high accuracy in identifying regional sensitive queries. Srinivas Vadrevu, Ya Zhang 0002, Belle L. Tseng, Gordon Sun |

| 2005 | Automated Metadata and Instance Extraction from News Web SitesabstractOver the past few years World Wide Web has established as a vital resource for news. With the continuous growth in the number of available news Web sites and the diversity in their presentation of content, there is an increasing need to organize the news related information on the Web and keep track of it. In this paper, we present automated techniques for extracting metadata instance information by organizing and mining a set of news Web sites. We develop algorithms that detect and utilize HTML regularities in the Web documents to turn them into hierarchical semantic structures encoded as XML. The tree-mining algorithms that we present identify key domain concepts and their taxonomical relationships. We also extract semi-structured concept instances annotated with their labels whenever they are available. We report experimental evaluation for the news domain to demonstrate the efficacy of our algorithms. Srinivas Vadrevu, Saravanakumar Nagarajan, Fatih Gelgi, Hasan Davulcu |
