| 1992 | Tuning a Parallel Database Algorithm on a Shared-memory MultiprocessorabstractAbstract Database query processing can benefit significantly from parallelism. Parallel database algorithms combine substantial CPU and I/O activity, memory requirements, and massive data exchange between processes, all of which must be considered to obtain optimal performance. Since parallel external sorting is a very typical example, we have focused on sorting to tune Volcano, a new query processing system. The purpose of the Volcano project is to provide efficient, extensible tools for query and request processing in novel application domains, particularly in object‐oriented and scientific database systems, and for experimental database performance research. It includes all query processing algorithms conventionally used in relational database systems as well as several new ones, and can execute all of them in parallel. In this article, we present Volcano's parallel external sorting algorithm and a sequence of enhancements to improve its performance. We obtained very good absolute performance, 84 seconds for 100 MB of data, as well as near‐linear speedup with sixteen CPUs and disks. Furthermore, these results were achieved on a shared‐memory machine despite the common belief that parallel query processing is best implemented on distributed‐memory systems. We detail our tuning measures and report on their effectiveness. Goetz Graefe, Shreekant S. Thakkar |

| 1990 | Performance of an OLTP Application on Symmetry Multiprocessor SystemabstractSequent's Symmetry Series is a bus-based shared-memory multiprocessor. System performance in an OLTP relational database application was investigated using the TP1 benchmark. System performance was tested with fully-cached benchmarks and with scaled benchmarks. In fully-cached tests, the entire database fits inside main memory. In scaled tests, the database is larger than available memory. In the fully-cached benchmark, performance was initially limited by bus saturation. The cause was the transfer of process context from processor to processor. This was eliminated by assigning each process to a processor. Processor affinity was combined with reductions in message-passing within the database. Throughput was dramatically improved. The scaled tests were I/O bound. This bottleneck can be eliminated by connecting more disk drives, or by increasing the main memory size. Shreekant S. Thakkar, Mark Sweiger |

| 1987 | VLSI Assist For a MultiprocessorabstractMultiprocessors have long been of interest to computer community. They provide the potential for accelerating applications through parallelism and increased throughput for large multi-user system. Three factors have limited the commercial success of multiprocessor systems; entry cost, range of performance, and ease of application. Advances in very large scale integration (VLSI) and in computer aided design (CAD) have removed these limitations, making possible a new class of multiprocessor systems based on VLSI components. A set of requirements for building an efficient shared multiprocessor system are discussed, including: low-level mutual exclusion, interrupt distribution, inter-processor signaling, process dispatching, caching, and system configuration. A system that meets these requirements is described and evaluated. Bob Beck, Bob Kasten, Shreekant S. Thakkar |

| 1986 | An Instruction Fetch Unit for a Graph Reduction MachineabstractThe G-machine provides architecture support for the evaluation of functional programming languages by graph reduction. This paper describes an instruction fetch unit for such an architecture that provides a high throughput of instructions, low latency and adequate elasticity in the instruction pipeline. This performance is achieved by a hybrid instruction set and a decoupled RISC architecture. The hybrid instruction set consists of complex instructions that reflect the abstract architecture and simple instructions that reflect the hardware implementation. The instruction fetch unit performs translation from complex instruction to a sequence of simple instructions which can be executed rapidly. A suitable mix of techniques, including cache, buffers and the translation scheme, provide the memory bandwidth required to feed a RISC execution unit. The simulation results identify the performance gains, maximum throughput and minimum latency achieved by various techniques. Results achieved here are in general applicable to von Neumann architectures. Shreekant S. Thakkar, William E. Hostmann |
